It’s flippin’ Pancake Day! 

Tuesday 9th February 2016 

Pancake Day signals the onset of the Christian 

Lent season and sparking a flurry of social 

media posts on Tuesday from people 

partaking in the centuries-old tradition of 

making and eating pancakes before Ash 

Wednesday. Known formally as Shrove 

Tuesday, Pancake Day has historically been a 

time to load up on carbs before the 40 days 

of fasting, leading up to Easter. 

Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle 

Ages. As in contemporary times, food items 

like meats, fats, eggs, milk, and fish were 

regarded as restricted during Lent. To keep 

such food from being wasted, many families 

would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in 

order to consume those items that would 

inevitably become spoiled during the next 

forty days. The tradition of eating pancakes 

on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to 

use as much milk, fats, and eggs as possible 

before Ash Wednesday began. In France, the 

consumption of all fats and fatty foods on 

this day coined the name "Fat Tuesday" or 

Mardi Gras. 

The holiday has its roots in Slavic pagan 

festivals that were meant to ward off the evil 

gods of darkness and cold. The pancake, 

whose origins date to the 15th century, 

symbolised the sun, conjuring feelings of 

warm weather and marking the beginning of 

spring. The ingredients involved in pancake 

making represented four pillars of the 

Christian faith - eggs for creation, flour as the 

mainstay of the human diet, salt for 

wholesomeness and milk for purity. An 

estimated 52 million eggs are used in Britain 

every year on Pancake Day, 22 million more 

than on any other day, reportedly.

An old tradition on Pancake Day is to hold 

pancake races, during which participants 

carrying frying pans toss and flip pancakes 

while running towards a 

finish line. Points are 

given for the height of 

flips as well as the best 

time. The races are a 

whimsical symbol for 

Christians’ rushing to 

church to repent of their 

sins after making 

pancakes. 

The most famous pancake race takes place at 

Olney in Buckinghamshire. It’s said that in 

1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving 

bell while she was making pancakes and ran 

to the church in her apron, still clutching her 

frying pan. The Olney pancake race is now

has a very long history and featured in 

cookery books as far back as 1439. The 

tradition of tossing or flipping them is almost

Essex Police sign up to the 

Dementia Action Alliance 

Essex Police have joined forces with the Essex 

Dementia Action Alliance to help raise awareness, 

reduce the stigma and improve understanding of 

dementia. As part of the initiative, officers and staff 

are being encouraged to become ‘Dementia Friends’ 

and improve their knowledge of Dementia to help 

support those affected by the condition. Over 155 officers and staff have already become 

Dementia Friends to help promote understanding of the condition. Dementia Friends are 

encouraged to turn their understanding into practical action. 

Detective Sergeant Craig Wiggins said: “Essex Police have signed up to the Essex Dementia 

Action Alliance to show our commitment to strengthen our response to the condition. This 

will help ensure those living with dementia, their friends, family and carers 

receive both understanding and a good quality of service from Essex 

Police. While we are putting significant efforts into ensuring that our 

own officers and staff understand the individual needs of those with 

dementia, we also want to raise awareness in the wider community 

and ensure that we are all playing our part in looking out for vulnerable 

residents of Essex.”

HUTTON & SHENFIELD 

CHORAL SOCIETY 

Hutton & Shenfield Choral 

Society was established in 

1967 and next season it 

will be celebrating its 

50th Anniversary. 

We have an exciting 

programme of choral music, 

accompanied as ever by the 

Aurelian Symphony 

Orchestra and high level 

professional soloists. The 

choir perform 3 major 

concerts each year from the choral 

repertoire, together with the very popular 

‘Music for Christmas’ concert which takes 

place at the Brentwood Centre each year on 

the last Saturday before Christmas. 

In last year’s Christmas concert we sang to 

an appreciative capacity audience of 1,100, 

which makes the event the largest of its 

type in Essex. 

Our main concert venue is the Brentwood 

Centre and we also sing each year at 

Brentwood Cathedral and Chelmsford 

Cathedral. 

In July this year we shall sing for the first 

time in the Wessex Auditorium at 

Brentwood School and we are looking 

forward to singing in this new venue. In 

addition, we hold a Soirée of Light music 

once a year at the Anglo-European School.

Our next major concert will be on the 

21st May at 7.30pm, and will be held at 

Chelmsford Cathedral, when we shall sing 

Mozart’s “Great” Mass in C Minor and other 

music by Mozart and Haydn.
