Our history
Denis Joseph O’Donovan, fondly known as Joe,
arrived in the big smoke in the late 50s after
moving to London from a tiny rural village in
West Cork. Joe then met his wife Kathleen, who
also came from West Cork, in the dance halls and
after marrying in 1958, they settled in Kilburn
where they started their family of four children:
Michael, Caroline, Anthony and Jacqueline.

Joe had
ambition and
determination
like a lot of
young men
who had made
the journey
over the
pond. Having
previously
worked on the
railways and
construction
sites, in 1959 Joe bought his first Caterpillar
951 Tracked shovel and secured his first
demolition job. He went on to purchase a
tipper and eventually moved into skip lorries,
establishing a depot near Kings Cross where
the business thrived and began to expand.
Sadly in 1985 Joe passed away suddenly at the
age of 51, leaving his family and an extremely
successful business which needed continuing.
The four children were thrust into the running
of the family business and at this stage none of
them had many years’ experience under their
belts. This didn’t stop the family however and
they took over the running of the business.
Still family owned O’Donovan is run by the
four siblings with Michael the CEO, Anthony
and Caroline the Operations Directors and
Jacqueline, Managing Director all of whom are
fiercely proud of the family-values which have
helped make O’Donovan the success it is.
After working out of numerous locations in
North London, the business finally settled in
Tottenham and currently has four sites within
the area, along with an additional location in
West London.

centre which is approved by JAUPT (DCPC) and
the British Safety Council.

Alperton depot opens
We divert 100% of our waste from landfill! Our
operation is growing continuously and this
year has seen us invest in expansion into our
brand new waste processing facility in Alperton,
Wembley. With its 24/7 licence, this new site
enables us to handle more materials than ever
before.
Sustainability is paramount for O’Donovan we
look to protect what we currently have and also
for our future generations. The key focus for
Alperton is to enable us to recycle as much as
possible into recoverable and reusable materials
and remove reliance on dwindling virgin
materials.
The site is self-sufficient in a number of ways
including the use of solar panels to provide
the electricity needed to power all the heavy
process plant on site and a water harvesting
system which collects rain water, with the
capacity to store 60,000 litres for use
across the entire site including our
suppression systems.
The creation of this new facility has also
enabled us to cast our net further afield in
relation to the areas we service and has created
a number of local jobs across a range of roles.
