Fire incidents cause thousands of deaths and billions of money losses every year. The
state of Utah is not invincible and like other states, it has its own share of losses
because of fire.
The Statistics
According to the U.S. Fire Administration’s (USFA) National Fire Incident Reporting
System, the cases of non-residential building fires and losses in 2014 (the most recent
year for which the data are available) are estimated to be 99,500, resulting in 60
deaths, 1,200 injuries, and $2,628,000,000 dollar loss. Cooking is the cause of 29,000
of fire cases, carelessness for 10,000 cases of fires, 9,000 of these fires were caused by
heating, and 8,800 of the fires are intentional.
The cases of residential building fires in 2014 amounted to 379,500, leading to a total of
2,765 deaths, 12,075 injuries, and $6,900,300,000 dollar loss. Cooking is the cause for
the 189,800 fire cases, heating for 47, 600 of fire cases, electrical malfunction is the
cause of 23,900 fires, and carelessness resulted in 22,000 fires.

Fire Prevention Measures
To reduce the numbers of fire cases, the members of the Fire Prevention Bureau took
the responsibility of performing plan reviews for new construction and enforcement of
fire codes—both in private and public structures. The task of each member is to
perform two to four inspections during the construction and assist local jurisdiction
through advice and inspections when requested.
The government and the state’s fire officers encourage residents to be smart and safe,
particularly with fireworks on special events like the 4th of July. Many experts also
advised Utahns to install a fire alarm monitoring system and hire the services of
providers who understand the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and
standards.
The government is doing its best to lower the number of fire cases in Utah each year.
The residents, however, should also do their part to prevent fires as a huge percentage
of fire-related damages come from residential structures.
