Side Trips
Good thing it only happens once every
four years.
Watching the Olympics gets to be
rather addicting, and I’m not sure why. All of
the highlights are rebroadcast on late night
coverage, and again on
the morning shows.
Yet we find ourselves in
front of the television
every night, watching
hours of track and
field, swimming and
gymnastics.
The night of the
opening ceremonies
we had plans to go out
to dinner, but kept delaying
our departure as
our daughter wanted
MYRNA
WAGNER
to see the United States enter the arena. We
fell for the television comments of “stay
tuned” and “coming up” in reference to the
athletes’ entrance, not realizing that meant
eventually they would cover the parade of
athletes, but not necessarily after the next
commercial break.
We finally gave up and went to dinner,
choosing an establishment not far from
home. The big screens at the restaurant were
tuned to Olympic coverage, so we caught
some of the team entrances that way, but
incorrectly assumed they were entering in
alphabetical order.
They were up to Somalia and Sri Lanka
as we left the restaurant. By the time we got
the TV on at home, Uruguay was making its
entrance. I couldn’t believe we had missed it!
Curious, I later checked the internet to
see just how close we had come. Not even
in the ball park. The U.S. had been team 70,
while Uruguay was 197.
Turns out, the lineup is based on alphabetical
order in the local tongue — in this case,
NEW FUN
32nd Annual Granville Car Show set to take place on Sunday, Aug. 21
The 32nd annual Granville Car
Show on Sunday, Aug. 21, is
about so much more than just
cars.
According to the event’s founder,
Danny Niichel, the event has grown
since its inception 32 years ago.
“There was a church picnic at St.
Joseph’s Church every year and they
wanted to do something to go along
with it and I’ve always loved going to
car shows. I thought the two would go
really well together,” Niichel said.
He went to a meeting at the church
and presented the idea to the board.
They loved the idea and wanted Niichel
to head up the car show. He was
the chairman of the car show for a
number of years and he’s still involved
with planning and promoting the
show every year.
It’s grown since the event started
more than three decades ago and Niichel
says that there is plenty of fun to
be had for the whole family.
“It’s like a little fair. There’s all kinds
of activities going on with it, which
makes it so nice. People return year
after year because they say that there
is fun stuff for the kids to do,” Nichel
said.
The event is held on the church
grounds and is packed with lots to
look at and lots to do. It kicks off at
10 a.m. with registration for vehicles
being entered in the car show on Sunday,
Aug. 21. The event is free to those
who want to come and see the cars
and participate in the activities.
Starting at noon there will be an
auction of new and used items that
have been donated for the cause of
raising money for the school, according
to Niichel. The auction usually
lasts a couple of hours and there are
all kinds of items up for bid.
For entertaining the kiddos, there’s
a kids pedal pull and lots of kids
games. There’s also a lunch stand,
where people can grab some lunch or
some yummy snacks.
For the car lovers, there will be cars
and much more to see.
“The most entries we’ve had for the
car show has been 181. The last three
years though, it’s been more in the
140s,” Niichel said. The cars have to
be registered and all will be entered
into the contest. Awards and trophies
will be given for a number of different
categories at the end of the afternoon.
In addition to the large number of
cars that will be at the event, there will
also be some other antique vehicles
that people will be able to check out
at the Granville Car Show.
“We have farm tractors and motorcycles,
too,” Niichel said. “About five
years after we started the shows, some
farmers thought it’d be nice if there
were some tractors, too, so now we’re
up to three tractor classes.”
In general, the more things there are
to do and look at, the more people
will be interested, Niichel said.
“With all the different things going
on there’s plenty to do and plenty to
look at. There should be something
for just about everybody,” Niichel
said. F
Golfing
Swing
of things
The
The first time I swung a golf club was shortly
after the first time I learned to walk.
In my family, golf is instilled in you at a
very early age. It’s just a way of life. There has
never been a time where I didn’t play, where
I didn’t keep up with the latest professional
tournament scores, where I didn’t want to catch
a round with my dad after a long day of work.
To me, golf is simply a life sport. I plan to play
golf until I’m no longer able to walk.
There is no relationship in my life that I cherish
more than the bond I have with my father.
Through golf, one of the many ways we connect,
we have shared countless memories playing
beautiful courses together all across the country.
This past week, I got to reminisce on those
memories by golfing a round with my dad’s
brother, Tim, and his kids, Nick and Ryan.
We set our sights on Okoboji View Golf
Course, an eighteen-hole course that resides on
the N’West side of the Okoboji Great Lakes. The
course was competitive, yet simple. Although
a few water hazards were sprinkled through
out the first nine holes, the real challenge lied
within the abundant trees. Hole after hole, trees
bordered each side of the rough making it extremely
difficult to find my ball.
I appreciated that each par 5 hole was manageable
and not too long. However, the various
par 3s had minimal fairway to work with. Often
times I found myself feeling very anxious when
I approached their tee boxes.
Thankfully, it’s courses like this that make my
game better.
As we played our 9-hole round, my uncle,
cousins and I decided to compete in a best ball
tournament. With two teams playing, each team
would have all four players tee off. Whoever had
the best tee off had the honors. Wherever their
ball landed would be the next place all four
players would hit from. Shot by shot the object
of the game was to pick the best ball from each
location that the best shot landed. With more
opportunities to have a great shot, the better our
score would be.
By the end of our competition, my team
smoked the other team by 3 strokes. Although 3
strokes may not seem like much, in best ball, it’s
everything.
The lush, green grass and warm summer sun
made our morning all the more perfect. Not
only does golf transport me to my happy place,
but it makes me so feel incredibly thankful that
I grew up playing the greatest sport on earth.
Whether you’re a golf enthusiast or a first time
player, Okoboji View Golf Course is a great sight
of summer to learn the swing of the things. F
Bring Out the Bikes
The sound is unmistakable. A kind
of roar as motorcycles cruise past
on a sunny summer afternoon.
The Iowa Great Lakes will hear plenty
of that sound and much more during
the second annual Boji Bike Rally
Weekend set for Aug. 19-21.
It is the second year that the bike
rally has been a chamber event after
Polaris began touring its rally around
the country.
`The three-day event will feature a
variety of concerts, numerous vendors
and demo rides on Preservation Plaza,
as well as tours of the Spirit Lake
Polaris plant and a Rally4Veterans
Benefit Ride.
“I’m excited to see it all come together,”
said Kara Matheson, the Iowa
Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce’s
new event coordinator. It is her first
major event after starting her new job
“The event is in its second year and
will be really fun. I’m looking forward
to seeing how many people we get
out and then growing for year three,”
Matheson said.
Preservation Plaza will be home
to a vendor fair and demo rides all
day both Friday and Saturday. The 22
vendors will include all sorts of motorcycle
gear and accessories as well
as food and beverages. Matheson may
take advantage of a demo ride herself.
“I rode on the back of motorcycle
once for about three blocks, that’s
all of my experience on a bike, so I
might just have to do one of the demo
rides,” Matheson said with a laugh.
Music will be a major part of the
weekend with the Jackyl and Head
East concert at Boji Bay Legacy Park
on Friday evening and the Badlands
House Band at Preservation Plaza on
Saturday in Arnolds Park.
That’s a lot of rock’n and roll’n to go
along with the motorcycle ride’n.
And it all comes at a perfect time
according to Matheson.
“With Sturgis being a week or so
before we’ll be bringing people back
from that who are looking for more to
do,” Matheson said. “We get to show
off the lakes to the biker crowd with a
Boji Bike Rally
packs a weekend
full of events
lots of fun stuff to do throughout the
weekend and maybe we get them to
come back for some other weekends,
too.”
All told it should be a fun-filled
weekend for bikers and really anyone
enjoying some time in the Iowa Great
Lakes.
“We have a really good group of
vendors and will be a really fun weekend
with a full schedule. We just hope
for good weather and look forward to
expanding offerings even further next
year,” Matheson said.
and regulations for teams participating
in the tournament. To
read the full form visit the tournament’s
Facebook page.
Rain: If we cannot play Saturday
due to rain, we will attempt to
be at the director’s discretion.
Bats: Up to date ASA and USS-
SA bats only, no other bats allowed,
if caught with an illegal bat
it is an automatic out. We will use
USSSA for discretion on bats.
Count: Each batter will come to
the plate with a 1 & 1 count, with
no courtesy foul.
Slow pitch softball
University of Okoboji hosts marquee tournament
The word “slow” may be in the
name, but there will be plenty
of action in the games of the
39th Annual University of Okoboji
Invitational Men’s Slow Pitch Softball
Tournament next weekend.
“You’ll see some very big home runs
and amazing defensive plays for sure,”
tournament director Brett Groen said.
“This is probably the top tournament
in N’West Iowa and it draws some of
the best players from some of the best
teams.”
Though it’s his first year organizing
the tournament, Groen is no stranger
to softball or tournaments in general.
He’s played in the University of Okoboji
tournament many times in years
past, ran a Pioneer Days tournament
at one point, and traveled with his
own softball team in addition to organzing
the Winter Games volleyball
tournament.
This year he takes over a tournament
that has been going on for
nearly four full decades.
“I’m not playing as much anymore
and so I had the opportunity to step
in and eventually we’d like to do some
things to grow and expand the tournament,”
Groen said.
About 20 teams have registered so
far this year, including the three-time
defending champion squad from
Spencer, which includes players from
Spencer, of course, as well as Sheldon,
Sioux Center and Estherville. Groen
said he sees a lot of teams registered
from when he was playing, which
speaks to the long standing tradition
of the tournament.
At least one team from Minnesota
has signed up so far in addition to several
from Iowa, Nebraska and South
Dakota. And now they’ll be kept
up-to-date on all things tournamentrelated
through their computers and
mobile devices.
“We started a Facebook page and
through doing some things on social
media we can spread the word
quicker,” Groen said. “It will be a
great way to keep people updated on
the tournament as well as during the
tournament with things like weather
updates, results and photos.”
The web presence adds another
element to a tournament that has retained
its popularity over many years.
The two main reasons Groen sees
for that popularity are the facilities
and the setting around them.
“The facilities are great at the softball
complex in Milford. We’ve got
three fields almost identical in size,
distance and shape,” Groen said. “And
probably the biggest draw of all is the
Iowa Great Lakes itself. A lot of teams
make it a ‘staycation’ tournament and
stay for a few days whether they go 0-2
or win the whole thing.”
Trophies will go to the first, second
and third place teams after a doubleelimination
tournament set up at the
discretion of the director.
“I always try to make the sure the
brackets are good and balanced and
the best teams will rise to the top,”
Groen said.
Many will try, but only one will
be able to claim the title of “Best in
Okoboji.” Find out who takes home
the trophy next weekend as University
of Okoboji nears the end of its summer
sports season with the slow pitch
softball tournament. F
Boji Bay Legacy Park at 6 p.m., Friday,
Aug. 19, and is the final show of the
Water City Concert Series sponsored
by Okoboji Harley-Davidson.
“Watching it all coming together
has been fun and with this last concert
of the summer coinciding with Boji
Bike Rally Weekend, I think the pairing
is just great,” said Tom Tourville,
the Boji Bay corporate connections
manager.
Jackyl has been rocking its way
around the world since forming in
1991 with it’s debut self-titled album
coming out a year later and being certified
platinum.
Their “hardest working band” title
came after earning a pair of Guinness
world records: one for performing 100
shows in 50 days and another for doing
21 shows in 24 hours.
Rock music has an obvious connection
with motorcycle culture and Jackyl
even more so with its connection
to the famed Full Throttle Saloon and
the Sturgis Bike Rally. The television
show tied to Full Throttle cemented
that connection and catapulted their
popularity even further. Of course,
touring with the biggest names in the
business like Aerosmith, Kiss, ZZ Top,
Ted Nugent and Damn Yankees while
performing chain saw solos at every
venue along the way didn’t hurt their
appeal either.
“Their success and popularity in the
biker community make them a perfect
fit for this weekend,” Tourville said.
“They’re the epitome of a biker band
and the finest bar-none.”
Joining Jackyl for the concert will
be the popular Okoboji favorite Head
East.
“They’ve probably played Okoboji
25 times over the past 40 years and
have easily been the most popular
national band around here,” Tourville
said. “People around here really like
them and we’re glad to have them
back.”
Head East, whose 1974 album “Flat
as a Pancake” featured the hit songs
“Never Been Any Reason” and “Love
Me Tonight” reached gold status, and
the band was inducted into the Iowa
Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association Hall
of Fame in 2011.
Leading off the night will be local
musician Eli Dykstra who is scheduled
to play a 30 to 45-minute set
before Head East takes the stage.
“He performed outside here last year
and he’s a favorite of the folks at Harley
Davidson. We’re all happy for him.
It’s pretty cool to be on the same bill
with those guys,” Tourville said. “Add
them all together and we feel it will be
a really great show — a great way wrap
up the series and the summer.” F
Rocking
theroof
Crowd favorite Richie Lee is back
in Arnolds Park.
In fact, he’s going to be Rocking
the Roof on Thursday, Aug. 18.
This will be the last of the Rock the
Roof summer series and will run from
6-9:30 p.m. at the Roof Garden in Arnolds
Park Amusement Park. Tickets
are $5.
The Rock the Roof concerts are a
way to go back in time. And they’ll
be doing just that on Thursday night,
Aug. 18.
In addition to Richie Lee, there will
be a Three Stars Tribute band as well.
Richie Lee was inducted into the
Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association’s
Hall of Fame in 2010. Lee has been
performing throughout Iowa since
2003.
“From Des Moines and the youngest
of four boys, Richie was singing
almost before he could talk and feeling
the beat before he could walk.
At the age of seven, he won a Buddy
Holly look-a-like/lip sync contest in
Des Moines sponsored by KJJY Radio.
It was then, Richie knew that he
wanted to be a performer. He loved
performing in front of the audience
and enjoyed the feeling he got while
doing so,” according to Lee’s bio.
Thursday night concert
to feature Richie Lee,
Three Stars Tribute
“This was the start of young Richie’s
musical career.”
He studied music from the age of
11 and formed his first band and released
his first CD in 2003 when he
was only 13 years old, “Richie Lee and
the Fabulous 50s.”
Lee and his band have went all over
the Midwest touring and has traveled
as far as Massachusetts, Colorado,
Texas and Tennessee.
“The music of the 1950s is a huge
part of Richie’s life. Beside Buddy
Holly and Ritchie Valens, he also
pays tribute to Elvis Presley, Eddie
Cochran, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison,
Chuck Berry, Dion Dimucci, and
many others,” according to his bio.
“His father is a lyricist, and collaborates
with him on new material; an
aspect of his career that Richie enjoys
immensely.”
There will be one more Rock the
Roof concert later this year.
“We’re very excited to expand our
Rock the Roof schedule this year
as we lead to our 20th anniversary
celebration during the Hall of Fame
Induction Spectacular on Labor Day
Weekend,” said John Senn, the Iowa
Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association’s
president. F
1950s and 60s hits along with hilarious
As Jay Leno’s opening act for
perform in a four-part harmony
that is both beautiful and funny.
The Alley Cats have also opened for
to perform for The President of The
United States at The White House.
Amanda Schinder, performing
arts director at the Pearson Lakes Art
America’s Doo-Wop Group.
“Folks who grew up with doo-wop
music will love the fantastic renditions
of the music of that time,” said
Schindler. “It’s not something you get
to see everyday, let alone listen to, and
it makes for a great trip back in time.”
“The
Sound
Rodgers and Hammerstein classic at OST Aug. 9-14
Okoboji is alive with the sound of
music.
Onstage now at Okoboji Summer
Theatre is a classic, beloved musical
that is bringing people out of the woodwork
to fill up all the theatre’s seats.
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The
Sound of Music” will run from Tuesday,
Aug. 9 through Sunday, Aug. 14.
It’s the culmination of Okoboji Summer
Theatre’s 59th season and it’s sure
not to disappoint.
“The Sound of Music” tells the tale of
Maria and the Von Trapp family in Austria
in 1938, just before World War II.
Maria is deciding whether or not to become
a nun when she is presented with
the opportunity to leave the confines of
the abbey and experience a little more
of Music”
of the world as the new governess to
widower Captain Von Trapp’s children.
To say the captain is strict with his
children isn’t quite right. He’s a military
man who treats his children as if they
are his own personal contingent. Maria
has no use for this and thoroughly disrupts
their tight schedules.
The children fall head over heels for
Maria just as she does for them. And
despite mounting political tensions and
a new fiance, Maria and the captain also
fall in love.
It’s a story of family and of love and
it’s one that continues to resonate with
audiences of all ages.
And while the musical isn’t exactly
like the movie you might remember
watching, it certainly does hit the same
emotional highs and lows. This is true,
especially when it comes to the music of
the show.
The show opens with hauntingly
beautiful harmonies of the nuns of the
abbey singing canticles. In my opinion,
throughout the entire musical, some of
the best and most moving music was
sung by the nuns.
Then it spins right to our leading
lady Talia McCall as Maria Rainer as she
sings, “The Hills are Alive.” McCall has
a lovely voice that soars out over the
crowd. She is warm and easily conveys
both Maria’s naiveness and her easy
love for the Von Trapp children.
The Von Trapp children themselves
are an absolute delight to watch onstage.
They are young and enthusiastic
and they were a hoot to watch. Especially,
little Gretl played by Kiana Leistikow,
who was constantly scowling at the
audience, I think due to the glare from
the lights.
Guest artist Sam Cordes returned to
the stage as the funny Uncle Max Detweiler,
and he expertly played his role
as well as helped to usher along some
blunders during the second act. Full
marks for this professional actor.
“The Sound of Music” was a high
note in this season’s lineup.
To Okoboji Summer Theatre and
its supporters, this knockout musical
marks the end of a great 59th season.
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen,
goodbye.
Until next summer. F
