Scholarships Awarded
by the Calcasieu Parish
Human Services’ Housing
Program

August 3, 2016 – Jayla Pete and Naya
Slaughter are the 2016 recipients of the
Housing Scholarships awarded by the
Calcasieu Parish Human Services’ Housing
Program. Louisiana Housing Council
scholarships were awarded to Ty’janae
Green and Jayla Pete at a luncheon on
May 11 th . Both of these scholarships
are awarded to an individual(s) living
on Section 8 assistance that has either
graduated from high school or is a head
of household who has returned to school.
This is the 10 th year of the Mac Donald
James Scholarship Award and the money
goes directly to the student’s school for
tuition, books and related educational
activities. Mac Donald James was the first
Calcasieu Parish Housing Director and
served in that role for 23 years.
Green is a 2016 Washington-Marion
Magnet High School graduate and has
been accepted to UL Lafayette. Ms. Green
has a 3.59 GPA and was nominated for
student of the year. She is a member of
the honor society, track team, softball
team and the BETA club. Ms. Green is also
active in the community volunteering at
Abraham’s Tent, Goodwill and the teen
church group Tsunami.
Pete is a 2016 Iowa High School graduate
and has been accepted to UL Lafayette.
Ms. Pete has a 3.53 GPA and is a member of
the National Honor Society, church choir,
praise team and Fellowship of Christian
Athletes.
Slaughter is a 2016 Washington-Marion
Magnet High School graduate and has
been accepted to Dillard University,
Grambling State University and Alabama
University. Ms. Slaughter has a 3.11
GPA and is a member of track and field,
student council, Indian Ambassadors and
the Blankslate Art Club.
Mac Donald James scholarship recipients
Jayla Pete and Naya Slaughter were
chosen by the Calcasieu Parish Housing
Program’s Family Self-sufficiency Program
Governing Council. The Louisiana
Housing Council Scholarship Committee
selected Ty’janae Green and Jayla Pete.
