Human Services’ Housing<br />

Program<br />

August 3, 2016 – Jayla Pete and Naya<br />

Slaughter are the 2016 recipients <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Housing Scholarships awarded by the<br />

Calcasieu Parish Human Services’ Housing<br />

Program. <strong>Louisiana</strong> Housing Council<br />

scholarships were awarded to Ty’janae<br />

Green and Jayla Pete at a luncheon on<br />

May 11 th . Both <strong>of</strong> these scholarships<br />

are awarded to an individual(s) living<br />

on Section 8 assistance that has either<br />

graduated from high school or is a head<br />

<strong>of</strong> household who has returned to school.<br />

This is the 10 th year <strong>of</strong> the Mac Donald<br />

James Scholarship Award and the money<br />

goes directly to the student’s school for<br />

tuition, books and related educational<br />

activities. Mac Donald James was the first<br />

Calcasieu Parish Housing Director and<br />

served in that role for 23 years.<br />

Green is a 2016 Washington-Marion<br />

Magnet High School graduate and has<br />

been accepted to UL Lafayette. Ms. Green<br />

has a 3.59 GPA and was nominated for<br />

student <strong>of</strong> the year. She is a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the honor society, track team, s<strong>of</strong>tball<br />

team and the BETA club. Ms. Green is also<br />

active in the community volunteering at<br />

Abraham’s Tent, Goodwill and the teen<br />

church group Tsunami.<br />

Pete is a 2016 Iowa High School graduate<br />

and has been accepted to UL Lafayette.<br />

Ms. Pete has a 3.53 GPA and is a member <strong>of</strong><br />

the National Honor Society, church choir,<br />

praise team and Fellowship <strong>of</strong> Christian<br />

Athletes.<br />

Slaughter is a 2016 Washington-Marion<br />

Magnet High School graduate and has<br />

been accepted to Dillard University,<br />

Grambling State University and Alabama<br />

University. Ms. Slaughter has a 3.11<br />

GPA and is a member <strong>of</strong> track and field,<br />

student council, Indian Ambassadors and<br />

the Blankslate Art Club.<br />

Mac Donald James scholarship recipients<br />

Jayla Pete and Naya Slaughter were<br />

chosen by the Calcasieu Parish Housing<br />

Program’s Family Self-sufficiency Program<br />

Governing Council. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Louisiana</strong><br />

Housing Council Scholarship Committee<br />

selected Ty’janae Green and Jayla Pete.<br />
