BENTLEY

New GT Speed and striking Black Edition

4 | EXQUISITE

bentley.indd 4

26/4/2016 3:18:30 PM

The revised Continental GT Speed raises the bar even further in terms of exclusivity and

performance. The fastest production Bentley ever, with a top speed of 206 mph (331 km/h), now

delivers even more power and torque, and a striking new Black Edition model joins the Speed

family.

Engineers at Bentley in Crewe have developed even more muscle from the Continental’s iconic

6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine. The GT Speed now produces 642 PS - up from 635 PS -

and 20 Nm of extra torque, bringing its total to a forceful 840 Nm. This additional torque is applied

through the entire rev range via careful reoptimisation of boost control, raising the Grand Tourer’s

renowned “torque plateau” of continuous maximum torque delivery from 2,000-5,000 rpm, and

bringing even greater acceleration performance. As a result, the 0-60 mph sprint time has dropped

to just 3.9 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.1 secs).

Bentley is also introducing the Continental GT Speed Black Edition which celebrates the rich and

striking depth of the GT’s sporting character. Available as both coupe and convertible bodystyles,

the customers’ choice of body colour is complimented by a high gloss black finish to the exterior

brightware, including the window openings and lamp bezels. All-black 21” five-spoke directional

wheels cover distinctive brake calipers, which can be specified in red or black finishes.

Listen to Us

Mid-Year is upon us and we continue at our fast and stressful pace. Everything is so

frantic, our ears blocked with ear phones, our eyes glued to screens. Our minds and

bodies are frantically reaching out, trying to tell us something via our instincts. But we

ignore and we block out.

Desperate, something makes up trip over a cracked pavement. We sprain our ankles and

end up in bed for a few days with dizzy spells. “It’s weird. It’s like something shoved me,” you

tell your loved ones. The doctor bans you from smart screens and earphones until dizzines

subsides.

Finally - sigh your body and mind. Finally, we can speak some sense into you. Firstly, you’re

lucky it’s just a sprain. Secondly, you will have to change your lifestyle to avoid worse health

problems. Thirdly, don’t block us out anymore.

Slow down, listen to your body and mind, take a walk surrounded by nature, meditate, exercise,

eat well and at leisure, take a holiday where you can swim in the crystal sea, spend time with

family and friends.

You’ll be amazed how different and richer your life will be.

Spirit of Big Bang

Bruce Lee Be Water

– Limited Edition

Inspired by the dragon pattern on Bruce Lee’s

desk at the recent Be Water My Friend--the

legend of Bruce Lee Memorial Exhibition in

Beijing, this tribute possesses the spirit of the

martial arts legend and the pure DNA of Hublot.

A limited edition of 100 pieces, featuring a

tonneau case in all-black microblasted ceramic.

The timepiece is fitted with HUB4700 –an

automatic winding skeletonized movement

with a 50-hour power reserve. The

date display window is at 4:30 and the

chronograph displays seconds at 9 o’clock,

minutes at 3 o’clock and hours at 6 o’clock.

Recalling Bruce Lee’s philosophy of water, the

strap is made of blue alligator leather sewn on

natural rubber.

As the most influential legend and superstar,

Bruce Lee was the best embodiment of fusion

of East and West. As a pioneer, he was the first

Chinese martial artist that promoted Chinese

Kung Fu to the world. He was active his entire

life in East-West cultural communication. Ever

since its establishment in Nyon, Switzerland

1980, HUBLOT has always been moving

forward as aground breaking pioneer,breaking

through traditional concepts, boldly combining

tradition with modernity, connecting the past

with the futureandcreating many”Firsts”.

Bruce Lee’s legacy is not limited to the martial

arts, but also ideas and philosophy. This is

one of the reasons why people still respect

him as a martial artist and philosopher. Bruce

Lee explained the Jeet Kune Do philosophy that

he had created as a process of exploration, selfdiscovery

and the growth of a soul. Hublot

believes in the natural forces that comefrom

the natural energy of the universe. The art

of fusion does not only occur in the above two

areas, the fusion of sky and the earth, the fusion

of tradition and innovation also occur all the

time. The Hour Glass is the exclusive retailer of

Hublot in South East Asia.

Moon Orbiter GMT

RJ-Romain Jerome has once again teamed up with La

Joux-Perret to produce the Moon Orbiter GMT. Taking

some aspects of the original model, the new timepiece

is home to an automatic flying tourbillon caliber, a

made-to-measure movement which has been entirely

redesigned.

Unprecedented for the brand, the Moon Orbiter

GMT sports an additional complication at 12 o’clock,

developed exclusively for this model: a fully-integrated,

jumping hour retrograde GMT feature.

The new time zone is accompanied by a day/night

function, which is indicated by a fully-functional disc

engraved with the sun and stars. The complication is

regulated by means of a dedicated pusher at 2 o’clock

on the case, acting as the timepiece’s claws as the

continuity of RJ-Romain Jerome famous X symbol.

Set atop a ceramic ball bearing, this distinctive X shape

is also to be found on the rear side of the case, on the

oscillating weight, balanced by inertia-blocks made from

Moon SilverRJ, an alloy made of low oxidation silver and

genuine moon dust.

RJ-Romain Jerome’s unique spring piston lugs have

been specially adapted for the new round case, ensuring

maximum comfort on the wrist, along with its stylish

black alligator strap. Limited 25 pieces. US$120,950.

PARMIGIANI

FLEURIER

The Tonda Métrographe

In Search of the perfect Abyss Blue

The Métro Collection is the first Parmigiani Fleurier watch

whose lines and essence embody the spirit and magic

of the world’s great cities, their inhabitants and the

frenetic pace that governs their movements. The

collection features “Métrographe” watches for men

and “Métropolitaine” watches for women.

The master dial-maker at the Parmigiani Fleurier manufacture

endeavours to create the brand’s signature Abyss blue. Creating

this shade is a real work of art. All the basic conditions are in place:

a specialist electroplating bath, with a certain current, at a perfectly

controlled temperature. With a steady hand, she dips the support

into the tank and artfully moves it as only she knows how. Under

the effect of electrolysis, the colour is transformed and – although

she has seen it so often before – this spectacular sight never ceases

to amaze her. The initial bright orange shade turns into an almost

rust-coloured brown; next, purplish tones appear, as deep as the

striking colour of aubergines; finally, waves of blue materialise with

this blue-violet hue which turns blue, and then a moment later, Abyss

blue. Stop. She keeps this colour and deftly removes the support.

On the men’s Tonda Métrographe, it is the chronograph complication

which stands out, thanks to the accentuation of its two minute and

hour counters. On this new Abyss blue dial version, they are outlined

with Superluminova material which highlights them in the daytime

and makes them glow at night. The two counters form a slanted

figure 8, enhancing a characteristic sign of the Parmigiani Fleurier

brand. The Hour Glass is the proud exclusive retailer for Parmigiani

Fleurier in South East Asia.

The Tonda Métrographe Abyss Blue retails from S$19,600 onwards.

New Competition Package amps up the sporty personality

of the BMW M3 and BMW M4

Significant handling upgrades, power hike to 331 kW/450 hp and exclusive equipment features. The BMW

M3 Sedan, the BMW M4 Coupe and the BMW M4 Convertible demonstrate the perfect combination of

high-performance sports car engineering with unrestricted everyday utility. From spring 2016, all three body

styles will be available with a special Competition Package from BMW M GmbH that combines added sporty

personality with enhanced dynamics. As well as extensive handling upgrades, the Competition Package also

comes with exclusive equipment features and a14 kW/19 hp hike in power that takes output to 331 kW/450

hp (BMW M3/M4 Coupe: combined fuel consumption 8.8–8.3 l/100 km [32.1–34.0 mpg imp], combined CO2

emissions 204–194 g/km; BMW M4 Convertible: combined fuel consumption 9.1–8.7 l/100 km [31.0–32.5

The extra power also means improved performance. The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe with

optional 7-speed M Double Clutch transmission sprint from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.0 seconds

(without Competition Package: 4.1 s), while the BMW M4 Convertible reaches the same speed in 4.3

seconds (without Competition Package: 4.4 s). The sprint time for models with the standard 6-speed

manual transmission is likewise 0.1 seconds faster in all cases than without the package.

The Competition Package for the BMW M3 and BMW M4 is topped off by extended BMW Individual highgloss

Shadow Line exterior trim. The high-gloss Black finish has been applied not only to the side window

trim, window recess finishers and exterior mirror frames and bases, but also to the BMW kidney grille, the

side gills and the model badge on the tail.

THE NEW SMART

CABRIO.indd 22

26/4/2016 3:46:57 PM

The countdown has started for the new smart fortwo cabrio, a particularly iconic

variant of the new generation model series.

Three cars in one: at the touch of a button the new smart cabrio is transformed

from a closed two-seater into a car with a large sliding canvas sunroof, or a fullyfledged

cabriolet with the soft top completely open. This enables the fresh air driving

experience to be adapted to the weather or the driver’s mood. This flexibility offered

by the “tritop” folding soft top and the removable roof bars is a special feature – and

not just in this segment. At the same time, the new smart cabrio is the only true

cabriolet in its vehicle class.

The new smart cabrio (length/width/height: 2.69/1.66/1.55 m) is clearly recognisable

as a member of the new smart generation. The third model also embodies the smart

design philosophy of FUN.ctional design, defined by two poles – the heart and mind.

The design idiom is clear, purist and very progressive. This includes the typical

silhouette with ultra-short overhangs, the clear lines, shapes and surfaces and, of

course, the tridion safety cell. With the grille in a fading honeycomb design and the

rhombic headlamps, the face is unmistakably smart. The B-pillar is narrower than on

the closed variant and the styling of the tridion safety cell is more progressive, giving

the smart fortwo cabrio an even sportier and more forward-focused look.

Matador

The torero, bullfighting and the whole

symbolism that surround the myth of the

bull is are endless source of inspiration

for so many different art forms.

Lladró pays tribute to bullfighting with a spectacular piece not

only in terms of its size but also for its faithful reproduction

of all the details of the bullfighter’s costume. The maestro is

wearing a green suit with gold adornments, a colour reserved

for toreros who have taken the alternativa, the ceremony that

recognizes them as a fully-fledged bullfighter, and means

that they dominate all the different passes and stages in a

bullfight.

Holding a cape with his two hands, the torero is performing a

“veronica”, perhaps the most basic of all movements with the

cape, the most classic pass and one that is almost obligatory

in the so-called “lances de saludo”, or opening movements.

A perfect piece for lovers of bullfighting and of Spanish

culture.

The wealth of detail of the costume know as traje de luces, or

“suit of lights”, with its sequins and embroidery, is achieved

thanks to the meticulous ornamentation and the decoration

with colour pastes and golden luster. An intense green was

used to imitate the silk with which the costume is normally

made and to further enhance the embroidery.

Bulerías

This piece is inspired by a festive type of

flamenco dance, the Bulerías. It is a lively

display of movement, always accompanied with

clapping hands and shouts of joy.

If Flamenco is one of the most famous arts in

Spanish popular culture, then Bulerías are one

of the most complex and festive Flamenco

variations.

Given the cheerful mood of the Bulerías, most

of Southern Flamenco celebrations are closed

with this dance. Therefore this piece is meant to

convey energy, movement, feeling of happiness

and the authentic flavor of Spain, reinforced by

the use of an intense red colour.

A Visionary

in Healthcare

Dr Dilshaad Ali bin Abas Ali is the force

behind successful healthcare initiatives in

Indochina and the region

BY CAROL KRAAL

With a gift of astute foresight Dr Dilshaad is an engaging leader with

proven qualifications and results in all aspects of hospital operations and

investments. He has the experience and ability in creating sustainable value

systems across diverse financial and operating models around the world.

Dr Dilshaad is embarking on his second endeavour in Vietnam to establish a premier

healthcare network after successfully setting up a middle tier healthcare Group providing

affordable healthcare and nursing education.

He is currently Managing Director of Far East Medical Clinics in Hong Kong. Far East

Medical Clinics HKG is an investment based special purpose vehicle established as

a platform to expand the value chain of existing flagship investments in the region,

especially Indochina. The medium to long term vision of the company is to expand to a

full spectrum of quality healthcare services ranging from primary care to quartenary care

capabilities as a synergistic investment portfolio.

COVERFEATURE

A CHAT WITH

DR DILSHAAD

YOU HAVE BEEN A DRIVING FORCE IN QUALITY

HEALTHCARE IN VIETNAM AND IN VARIOUS PARTS

OF THE WORLD FOR MANY YEARS. HAS THERE BEEN

A POSITIVE RESPONSE TO PREMIER HEALTHCARE

AS OPPOSED TO MIDDLE TIER HEALTHCARE IN

INDOCHINA?

While there is a segment that subscribes to premier healthcare

services in the region, the socio economic scenario in most

of Indochina warrants accessibility to specialty services

through an affordable platform. We do see premier healthcare

providers trying to set up their brands and services, and

especially so during the recent few years but many have not

been very successful as they cannot attract the clientele to

create economies of scale to sustain their investments. In my

opinion, we should always look at the demographics and then

assess if we are addressing the real needs and creating value

to the communities in these countries. We can still create good

clinical outcomes by not being “Premier”

IN A REGION WHERE MANY CITIZENS ARE POOR AND

STILL DEPEND ON TRADITIONAL REMEDIES, HOW

DOES MODERN HEALTHCARE REACH THESE PEOPLE?

The region has progressed well over the last decade and

with better education and also growing economies, two key

factors have proven to be able to change how healthcare

is delivered – affordability and awareness. This drives the

growth of healthcare demand in the region. The key factor is

creating accessibility and this has been achieved by both the

governments and private healthcare providers playing equally

vital roles in ensuring there is enough coverage for people

seeking healthcare services. One very important development

in the region is the availability of Universal Health Insurance in

countries like Vietnam and Thailand which allows patients to be

treated at a more affordable. Besides these there are also many

other areas where technology and knowledge transfers are

being explored to provide better access.

IS SOCIAL EDUCATION IN HEALTHCARE IMPORTANT,

AS A RESULT, AND HOW WOULD YOU GO ABOUT

THIS?

Awareness is very important in how we address healthcare

issues of any community. This is also one of the reasons why

we see higher incidences of diseases like cancer being reported

compared to 20 years ago. We live in an era where information

is exchanged faster than ever. It would be a big failure of any

community or government that in this day, populations are not

made aware of their healthcare risks and benefits of prevention

and treatment.

The spectrum of how healthcare information or social

education is disseminated is very broad and can range from

direct person to person counselling all the way to using social

media and information technology. All said, the most important

perspective that we have to consider is the relevance and

practicality of the mode of delivery and the context of the

impact to the population.

HEALTHCARE IS ALSO A BUSINESS AND

INVESTMENT ENTITY. IS VIETNAM A GOOD BUSINESS

ENVIRONMENT IN TERMS OF HEALTHCARE?

Asia has, in the recent years, been seen as the pot of gold for

many fund managers and investors. Reemerging South East

Asian economies like Vietnam are now being looked at as being

highly suitable environments for investments in social services

such as education and healthcare.

With the continuous growth in the socio-economic structure

of the country, Vietnam presents with many opportunities

for expansion in private healthcare provision. There have

been many initiatives by the Government to attract more FDI

into healthcare and to make healthcare a more broad based

platform for patients to receive quality treatments. Vietnam

has been a very significant contributor to the regional medical

tourism market and the environment is clearly e suitbale for

rightly placed investments in healthcare to add more value in

the continuum of care.

HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT SERVICES IN THE

REGION DEMAND AN EXPERIENCED COLLABORATION

OF HEALTHCARE INVESTORS, EXECUTIVES AND

TECHNICAL PROFESSIONALS. DO REGIONAL

EDUCATION AND MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

STANDARDS KEEP UP WITH THESE DEMANDS? AND

HOW DO YOU SELECT THIS POOL OF PEOPLE?

In my opinion, there is no lack of medical technology and

education available in the region. Besides having their own

traditional home grown institutions, many countries in Asia

have now become hubs for advanced medical education

systems from all over the world.

From a technology perspective there is also no shortage of

options and advancements that the healthcare industry can

access. We are at the forefront of change almost every hour of

the with so much or research and development being invested

into almost every aspect of the industry from management,

operations and delivery itself.

The challenge today is to develop a sustainable model

of human capital that can keep meeting the demands of

healthcare. With growing needs and accessibility, the world

has never been faced with a greater challenge than to have

enough people to run healthcare systems and deliver care

at all spectrums. Healthcare is not immune to the changing

patterns of generations from the baby boomers to Gen Z

today. Any form of selection process has to be catered to the

available workforce and their trends. Subsequently, this entails

that healthcare managers and administrators have to create

modular and standardised processes that fit a generation of

healthcare professionals who do not view job security as being

important.

WHAT IS YOUR OBJECTIVE FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS?

Create accessible, sustainable healthcare eco-systems in the

region by innovating healthcare delivery models. The concept

is to make models simple and replicable.

I have also started a non-profit project to empower start-ups

and charity healthcare organisations to create structured

platforms into how they manage their institutions to keep

being sustainable. This initiative involves a network of senior

healthcare experts from around the world to provide pro bono

expertise to qualified institutions to achieve specific objectives

in improving their performance and healthcare delivery.

In five years, I would see myself as a mentor creating a legacy

in healthcare delivery.

HOW DO YOU RELAX AFTER A HARD DAY AT WORK?

I read a fair bit and enjoy movies. I would say that the ultimate

relaxation would be to cook up a good meal and indulge with

family and friends.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO A YOUNG PERSON WHO

WANTS TO VENTURE INTO HEALTHCARE INVESTMENT,

CONSULTANCY AND MANAGEMENT IN INDOCHINA?

First and foremost understand that the world has no

boundaries. Continuous learning is key and cross industry

applications are relevant to differentiate. Beyond that –

”Impossible is Nothing!”

Last but not least, is to be at a place to make a difference to

society by being more involved in humanitarian and charitable

causes.

The founder of

centred around his love

for pastry and food

BY CAROL KRAAL

Daniel Tay started his journey in the world of food as a pastry chef by training under

his father, Mr Tay Yam Choong, who owned Seng Choong Confectionery in Marine

Parade in the 80s to 90s. It was in this small family-run business selling bread and

pastries that Daniel’s love for baking flourished under his father’s tutelage.

He enrolled in the UFM International Baking Institute in Bangkok where he was taught

baking science and technology, and after graduation, continued further training further in

various dining establishments in France, notably at Fauchon.

The 46-year-old father of three boys then worked at various local establishments such as

Rive Gauche Patisserie and Bengawan Solo, before being appointed pastry chef at Les Amis

in 1996. Daniel struck out on his own with patisserie-cafe chain Bakerzin in 1998, and then

opened the first Bakerzin cafe at Millenia Walk in 2000 to offer affordable savoury Frenchstyle

cuisine and desserts to local consumers. Awards and accolades followed including the

Gold Medal at the World Pastry Cup 1996 in Singapore and representing Singapore at the

World Pastry Cup held in Lyon in 1997.

Daniel left Bakerzin in 2013 and ventured into large-scale food contract manufacturing and

founded Foodgnostic, a fully integrated solutions provider with a centralised bakery and

food production facility. He also launched online cheesecake specialist shop, Cat and the

Fiddle, which offers quality cheesecakes at affordable prices targeting at consumers.

A Chat with Daniel Tay

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A PASTRY CHEF, AND HOW YOUNG WERE

YOU WHEN YOU DECIDED TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?

Like every youngster growing up, aspirations moved at lightning speed. I wanted to be so

many things, and these changed almost on a daily basis!

I do remember, vividly though, that I wanted to be a fashion designer at one point and was

convinced that that was my final calling.

However, as I grew up around a family of bakers and home cooks, it became increasingly

obvious that I was a better baker and cook than I was a designer.

The passion to bake grew as I spent more time with my father in his confectionery (Seng

Choong Confectionery) and before I knew it, my designer dreams soon became a rather

amusing memory of my past and I gave up pen and paper for a rolling pin and oven.

TECHNOLOGY IN FOOD AND PASTRY MAKING HAS

COME A LONG WAY SINCE YOUR FATHER’S TIME IN

THE CONFECTIONERY BUSINESS. HOW HAS TECH

TRANSFORMED F&B FOR YOU IN THE LAST 5 YEARS.

It certainly has, by leaps and bounds!

Food technology still astounds me every time I discover a new

piece of equipment or come across time saving ideas that help

to make this industry more interesting.

Foodgnostic was born because of my growing passion and

fascination at creating more efficient ways to provide the F&B

industry with state-of-the-art equipment and solutions that,

help alleviate problems caused by the lack of labour and space.

These solutions are meant to make production more efficient,

consistent and help manage productivity costs.

YOU WORKED AT LES AMIS FOR SOME TIME. WHICH

FRENCH BAKING TECHNIQUES AND CLASSIC FRENCH

METHODS ARE INVALUABLE TO A MODERN PASTRY

CHEF?

French pastry is a true art. The classic methods are amazing but

the science behind those methods is what matters most.

Baking is an exact art and without the science, one cannot

expect to have the perfect bake or result.

When I started baking, I had the opportunity to learn from the

best – Mr Roy Chung, my mentor – who relentlessly drilled in

me the importance of learning and remembering the science

of baking. To this day, I use what I’ve learnt to improve my

products and to maintain the consistency of all my baked

goods.

YOUR ONLINE CHEESECAKE SPECIALIST SHOP CAT

AND THE FIDDLE, BALANCES QUALITY INGREDIENTS

AND AFFORDABLE PRICES. HOW IS THIS ACHIEVED IN

BUSINESS?

Once again several factors are key to creating a good business

model that not only provides the best product but also the most

consistent cakes at affordable prices.

One of most important factors to running an online business is

working with small margins but larger volumes.

During the R&D process for every new cake flavour, I always

believe that the only way to achieve the best and truest flavour

and taste is through the use premium ingredients. This is

something I will not compromise on.

Once the product is finalised, Cat & the Fiddle works with the

expertise of Foodgnostic to create a production line that makes

our cake production faster, more efficient and consistent in

quality.

WHICH OF YOUR CHEESECAKES IS YOUR FAVOURITE?

Actually I came up with Fickle Feline because I love ALL my

cheesecake flavours. Fickle Feline features 10 flavours in one

cake and this way my customers and I don’t have to choose!

WHAT CHEESECAKE CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO IN

THE NEXT FEW MONTHS AT CAT AND THE FIDDLE?

We are in the process of R&D for two new products in the

coming months – a red velvet cheesecake and a non-alcoholic

Fickle Feline range. Currently there are several alcoholic slices

in this original version. With the new non-alcoholic version, we

can cater to families, friends and kids who want to order the

Fickle Feline but do not want any alcohol in their cakes.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOODIE DESTINATION ON

YOUR TRAVELS, AND WHY?

CHINA! I am obsessed about learning more about my own

culture and heritage and I make trips there whenever I am able

to. China is so vast, the culture is so diverse and so amazing

that it will take more than a lifetime to learn all there is to know

about China. In the near future, I am hoping to bring my brands

there too.

I am also very passionate about Chinese tea culture as well and

when I am not working and I am constantly seeking out new

and exquisite ranges of Chinese tea and sharing it with family

and friends. I am very much into the art of making the perfect

cup of Chinese tea as it is a very meditative. I use this as a way

to destress too!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNG BOY WHO

WANTS TO BE A PASTRY CHEF AND OWN HIS OWN

FOOD BUSINESS?

If you get into it only for the money, then you are going to fail.

You have to start out with the passion and the want to create

something that will make someone taste your bake and

remember you.

You have work hard, sustain the passion and be willing to learn

the science of baking. You should also be humble enough to

seek out those who are willing to teach you more and share

their experience with you to make you a better baker.

You have to understand that you are constantly called upon

to be creative. You have to always find ways to make your

business viable with good and wise business decisions.

Porsche Party

New 911 model range launches in Singapore

In a launch event held recently at the Marina Bay Sands

Expo and Convention Centre, nearly 900 Porsche owners,

enthusiasts, and special guests witnessed the unveiling

of the latest 911 model range from Porsche. Six highperformance

variants were launched at the event — the 911

Carrera, 911 Carrera S, 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, 911 Carrera

4S, 911 Targa 4S and the top-of-the-line 911 Turbo. Those

in attendance were treated to a stunning multimedia launch

sequence, a forward-looking display that truly exemplified the

underlying spirit of performance and innovation that drives

every new model Porsche release.

Already a pure pleasure to drive before, the new 911 is now

fitted with an all-new 3.0-litre twin turbocharged flat-six engine,

which means that the new base model of the range boasts

a respectable 370 horsepower, 20 more than the existing

naturally-aspirated engine. Acceleration is now even better than

ever before, with smoother gear shifting so that you can focus

on what really matters — enjoying the drive. One step up from

the Carrera, the Carrera S model delivers 420 horsepower and

reaches a top speed of 308 km/h. More impressively, it blazes

through the tarmac from 0 – 100 km/h in a mere 3.9 seconds

with Sport Chrono Package — the first 911 in the Carrera family

to undercut the magic four-second mark.

ABOUT THE ALL-NEW PORSCHE 911 CARRERA AND

TARGA MODELS

Many exterior features of the 911 Carrera have been visually

refined: these range from newly designed standard Bi-Xenon

headlights with integrated four-point LED daytime driving

lights to door handles without recess covers, a redesigned

rear lid with vertical louvres and new rear lights – including

the characteristic four-point brake lights. In the interior, the

new standard Porsche Communication Management with a

multi-touch display offers a considerably expanded range of

functions and greatly simplified operation.

The completely new engine generation with bi-turbo charging

raises the emotional driving pleasure in the 911 Carrera to an

even more intensive experience: 370 hp (272 kW) of power for

the 911 Carrera. The engine in the 911 Carrera S now delivers

420 hp (309 kW). In both cases this represents a power increase

of 20 hp (15 kW). Both engines have a displacement of three

litres.

A good illustration of the most striking exterior design change

in the new 911 — the redesigned rear deck lid with vertical

grilles. Not merely an aesthetic transformation, the grilles were

modified as such to increase air intake to cool the engines,

which in turn increases fuel economy. The air vents on the

front bumper have also been reshaped to feature active flaps

that automatically open and close while the car is in motion to

reduce drag and achieve maximum aerodynamic performance.

The new 911 now also has Porsche Active Stability

Management (PASM) available as standard option together

with new standard wheels with reduced rolling resistance.

Ride height is lowered by ten millimeters, stability during

fast cornering is improved, and more precise response

characteristics ensure that driving comfort is further enhanced.

The new Porsche engines are characterised by significantly

of 450 Nm and 500 Nm respectively. The 911 Carrera with

PDK transmission now consumes just 7.4 litres of fuel per

100 kilometres (a reduction of 0.8 l per 100 km), while the 911

François-Paul Journe’s illustrious status amongst

Singapore’s burgeoning watch community is validated

once more as he recently made an appearance at The

Hour Glass’s luxury emporium, Malmaison.

Ms Dolly Cheong and Ms Paulina Bohme

Earlier this year, The Hour Glass announced their new and

exclusive partnership with F.P.Journe, a highly acclaimed

independently-owned maison of haute horology. Together, the

very first Espace F.P.Journe was launched and housed in the

upper storey of Malmaison amidst natural lighting and liberal

space. To mark this momentous chapter, The Hour Glass was

privileged to have the presence of the manufacture’s master

watchmaker himself grace our city after a transient hiatus since

2011.

Journe has been “inventing” and “making” watches over three

decades. He draws on his historical knowledge and expertise

to face the most daring horological challenges, demonstrating

a timeless consistency in research and innovation with a single

goal: make each mechanical timepiece as accurate as possible.

He remains the manufacture’s master watchmaker, setting the

brand apart from other watch manufactures. With his profound

knowledge in technical watchmaking, each timepiece is

handcrafted individually and assembled only in a limited series.

Mara. As a highlight, Franziska Gsell presented this year’s award winner Matt Ruskin

with the US$50,000 film grant, as well as the of cial IWC Filmmaker Award trophy and

an IWC timepiece.

Matt Ruskin left a profound impression on jury members Georges Kern, CEO of IWC

Schaffhausen, Anna Ponder, Executive Director of Tribeca Film Institute®, Paula

Weinstein, Executive Vice President of the Tribeca Film Festival, and last year’s award

winner, Deb Shoval, who is premiering her lm “AWOL” at this year’s festival (“AWOL”

producer Laura Teodosio also participated in the deliberation). The film tells the story

of Colin Warner, who was wrongfully convicted of murder, and his best friend Carl

King, who devotes his life to proving Colin’s innocence.

Earlier that day, IWC had launched the Portugieser Annual Calendar Edition “Tribeca

Film Festival 2016” (Ref. 503506), which is powered by the IWC-manufactured 52850

calibre. Located at “12 o’clock” on the dial, IWC’s annual calendar shows the month,

date and day in three separate, semicircular windows. The “American” order in which

the date is shown was not only necessary from a technical and design point of view,

but also pays tribute to F.A. Jones, IWC’s American founder. With its voluminous

44.2-millimetre case, grooved bezel, classic railway-track-style chapter ring, slim

feuille hands and Arabic numerals, the Portugieser Annual Calendar very closely

resembles the original Portugieser of 1939, a veritable design icon.

EVENTSTHEATRE

W!LD RICE Presents the 2016

Singapore Theatre Festival

The month-long event at LASALLE College of the Arts celebrates

new local writing

At a time when the nation is poised between its storied

past and the uncertain future, the Festival presents

eight of the most exciting, ambitious and thoughtprovoking

new plays that have been written in and

about today’s Singapore.

NEW WRITING, NEW TALENT, NEW IDEAS

From 30 June to 24 July, the STF will transform LASALLE

College of the Arts into a buzzing hub of activity. Throughout

the Festival, audiences will have their pick of a diverse line-up

of hilarious, heartbreaking, witty and whimsical works created

by some of Singapore’s most exciting and innovative theatremakers.

“In this day and age, many issues surrounding race, religion,

politics, sex and gender identity have become divisive and

polarising. We are paralysed by fear when it comes to thinking

and talking about them. We need new ways of seeing and

thinking,” said Ivan Heng, Artistic Director of the STF.

A FESTIVAL FOR EVERYONE

Featuring the work of 9 Playwrights, 8 Directors and 4

Companies, the plays tell stories of contemporary Singapore

and give voice to people from all walks of life: from the

young and the old, to minorities and the marginalised,

including members of the LGBT, Teochew and motorbiking

communities. The plays also span a range of genres and forms,

encompassing written and devised works as well as verbatim

theatre. From the disarmingly intimate to the startlingly epic,

these plays will open your eyes and touch your hearts.

The cornerstone production of the Festival will be HOTEL, an

epic odyssey through a hundred years of Singapore’s history

that was presented at the 2015 Singapore International Festival

of Arts. Proclaimed an “instant classic” by The Straits Times

(ST), W!LD RICE’s electrifying production follows the guests,

staff and ghosts of an iconic HOTEL in Singapore through

a century of social and political change. Directed by Ivan

Heng and Glen Goei and written by Alfian Sa’at and Marcia

Vanderstraaten, the production was recently nominated for

seven ST Life! Theatre Awards, including Best Direction, Best

Original Script and Production of the Year.

“As part of the Singapore

Theatre Festival’s

ongoing commitment to

discovering new talent,

the season will feature

brand-new plays by firsttime

playwrights.”

Alfi an Sa’at

“Alfian Sa’at’s GRC (Geng

Rebut Cabinet) unearths

some uncomfortable truths

in a topsy-turvy political

landscape in which Malays

form the majority of the

population.”

As part of the STF’s ongoing commitment to discovering new

talent, the season will feature brand-new plays by first-time

playwrights – Helmi Yusof’s My Mother Buys Condoms is a

heartfelt romantic comedy that puts a cheeky spin on active

ageing; and Nessa Anwar’s Riders Know When It’s Gonna Rain

takes audiences on an exhilarating ride through the adventures

and friendships shared by members of Singapore’s motorbiking

community. Thomas Lim’s Grandmother Tongue also makes

its world premiere during the Festival; the play examines the

ways in which the concepts of family and identity get lost in

translation when younger generations can no longer speak the

languages of their forebears.

The Festival will also feature re-worked productions of

recently staged plays. Rodney Oliveiro’s Geylang, created

in collaboration with young & W!LD, lifts the lid on the past,

present and future of Singapore’s most colourful and notorious

district. Johnny Jon Jon’s Hawa teases out the conflicts

between faith and sexuality when an unconventional love

story comes to a premature end. Kenneth Chia and Mark Ng’s

Let’s Get Back Together uses the heartfelt testimony of LGBT

individuals in Singapore to provide eye-opening insights into

their trials and tribulations.

Last but not least, Alfian Sa’at’s GRC (Geng Rebut Cabinet)

unearths some uncomfortable truths in a topsy-turvy political

landscape in which Malays form the majority of the population,

and was recently nominated for three ST Life! Theatre Awards

(Best Original Script, Best Actor, Best Actress).

Recognising that theatre does not begin or end with the rise and

fall of the curtain, a programme of FEST!VITIES at LASALLE’s

Lowercase Cafe has been planned. The Art & Life Sessions will

feature prominent public personalities reflecting on the issues

of the day in a series of lively forums that are free to the public.

Audiences can also kick back and relax in the Festival Club with

Drag Attack!, Songs of Protest and Stand Up for Singapore, a

late-night programme that shines a spotlight on emerging and

established talents in the respective fields of drag, music and

stand-up comedy.

continues with the Ginza store. Following on from

London’s New Bond Street and the recently opened

Los Angeles’ Rodeo Drive flagship, this new location

cements the link between the company’s Modernist heritage

and its long standing history of architectural patronage. DCA

has once more drawn on the relationship between Bally and

pioneer Modernist architect, Marcel Breuer, whose design of a

1921 Bally store inspired the store concept.

Located on what is considered the gate of Ginza, the Bally

flagship store stands out boldly, showcasing a 50 metre brass

aluminium faç ade which runs the width of the store and merges

into the Tokyu Plaza building.

The 845 square metre store is set over two floors. The ground

floor is dedicated to the men’s and women’s accessories and

ready to wear collections, as well as the Gentleman’s Corner

which offers a unique experience to customers, with Made to

VALENTINO Collaborates

with Teatro dell’Opera

Valentino Garavani will design Violetta’s

costumes in the La Traviata production

The relationship that connects Valentino to the Eternal City renews itself through a new project with The Teatro

dell’Opera di Roma: an exceptional edition of La Traviata conceived by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo

Giammetti in collaboration with Teatro dell’Opera and directed by Sofia Coppola in her debut as lyrical opera

director. Valentino Garavani will design Violetta’s costumes that will be crafted in the Valentino Maison’s atelier.

“In my life I have always dreamed of representing La Traviata but in a new way. All the great maestros from

Visconti to Zeffirelli, Maria Callas, Piero Tosi, Lila de Nobili, have inspired me in this new undertaking. I did not

want a modern and absurd Traviata like many represented today. I wanted a classic and magnificent Traviata

and I asked Sofia Coppola to give it that touch of modernity and surprise which will make it special”, said

Valentino Garavani.

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, Creative Directors of Maison Valentino, will create the costumes for

Flora and for the Chorus, in collaboration with the Teatro dell’ Opera’s costume workshop.

The scenes of this new La Traviata are endorsed by British production designer Nathan Crowley and the

musical compositions will be entrusted to the maestro Jader Bignamini.

Among the leading voices Francesca Dotto and Maria Grazia Schiavo, alternating in the role of Violetta,

together with Antonio Poli and Arturo Chacón-Cruz, taking on the role of Alfredo.

The show will run for 15 performances, from May 24 May until 30 June, 2016.

STYLEWOMEN

VALENTINO

Spring 2016

A mix of cultures as an expression

of individuality

Fusion as an essence of contemporary life.

For Valentino’s Spring 2016 collection, Maria

Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli adopted

Diana Vreeland’s famous phrase: “The eye

has to travel.” They set off for a journey

amidst faraway worlds, combining them in the

name of an extreme aesthetic that preserves

unmistakable lightness. They combine

the libertarian spirit and undisciplined

style of memorable rock concerts with the

idiosyncratic decorative approach of Millicent

Rogers, bohemian exoticism with the volatile

glamour of a garden party, simplicity and

excess. The result is a complex yet simple

concept that sends a liberating message: the

Valentino world is a free zone where each

woman is one of a kind, using style as an

instrument for self-expression. The collection

is tactile, patterned, intense, and experimental.

Everything is based upon intricate weaves

and layering. The flowing, sleek silhouette is

embellished with gored inserts, drop waists,

and bell sleeves. Sensuality is subtle yet

distinctive. The poetry of travel becomes

a detour of texture: lace and pleating are

combined in fantastic woven intarsia, while

geometric motifs form stripes and chevron

patterns. Surfaces are covered with graphic

patterns and natural landscapes continuously

redesigned by cuts and constructions: a

Navaho print from the archives, the surprising

Water Song by artist Christi Belcourt. Metal

studs and hard stones decorate leather

garments, while intarsia embellishes suede

jackets. Balances are slightly skewed: fanciful

animals are embroidered on sportswear, while

military-style garments come in moody black.

SPRING SUMMER 2016

Inspired by the all-inclusive visual landscape encountered on

a trip to Japan, Jonathan Anderson set out to reinterpret the

imaginary world of a Japanese animated action character,

transposing it onto new, resolutely current clothes de ned by

a youthful spirit and a playful sense of escapism.

The collection itself consists of a wide range of functional

pieces, including knitwear, outerwear, and pyjama-inspired

sportswear. An elongated and uid silhouette contrasts with

a new, more boxy shape. Shirts, trousers, and coats, among

other items, take familiar forms out of context to result in

new variations: transparent nylon reveals subtle layering

options, while textures and materials —including silks, linen

and cotton, alongside synthetics— mix and collide freely.

stress, alcohol, rich food and not enough sleep. Remember to choose lightweight gels over creams, as

the former are textures that hold up best in humid weather without making your skin too greasy.

Coconut Oil

Crave

Discover a whole lot of benefits

BY WONG YEN SAN

Although coconut drinks are not my favourite, many

of my family and friends love to sip them especially

on a hot, humid day and we have many of such days

here. There is something addictive about ordering

a coconut drink; one such bonus could be coconut meat. It

is always a joy to be able to personally partake in your food

– in this case, by methodically scraping off the meat into our

mouths while slurping the water down. Though this has been

one popular drink and pastime, many have taken to consuming

this tropical fruit in other ways. Coconut oil for example has

been invading the supermarket shelves and organic shops,

claiming many benefits for health as well as for the body.

Although it might be known for its unhealthy artery-clogging

reputation in the past, coconut oil is being considered with

renewed interest today.

CONTAINS SATURATED FAT

Two types of fats exist; one is healthy fats, which we call

unsaturated fats that are critical in raising good cholesterol

levels in our body. Foods containing unsaturated fats come

from fish oils and fats from nuts and seeds, as well as

vegetable oils like olive, corn, and soybean oils. Saturated fats

mainly come from animal fats, and consumption of a lot of

these fats could potentially raise bad cholesterol levels; thereby

increasing risks of cardiovascular diseases. Trans fats are the

worst kind; they decrease good cholesterol while upping your

bad cholesterol levels. Coconut oil is not completely innocent

here; it contains saturated fats albeit it is much better than

butter, which is made from animal fats as well as trans fat.

SHORT AND MEDIUM-CHAIN FATTY ACIDS

The saturated fats in coconut oil are found to contain mediumchain

fatty acids, which are healthy saturated fats as compared

to trans fat. These fatty acids, instead of being stored as fat

in the body, are metabolised and turned into energy for the

effective functioning of the body. Hence, though coconut

oil contains saturated fat; but the compound within it helps

the body to function rather than it being stored and; thereby

contribute to problems like heart diseases, stroke, or other

cardiovascular problems.

CONTAINS LAURIC ACID

A compound within coconut oil, lauric acid is a saturated fat

that is also found in many vegetable fats such as palm kernel

oil. WebMD says that lauric acid is widely used medicinally

for the treatment of many viral infections, common colds and

cold sores, as well as bronchitis and yeast infections. Though a

saturated fat, lauric acid is found to have the ability to raise the

levels of good cholesterol while decreasing bad cholesterol in

the body. Because of the compound, coconut oil is considered

by some to be a safer fat than other unhealthy fats like trans fat

for example.

CHOOSE EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL

Extra virgin coconut oil does not go through any chemical or

refinery process such as hydrogenation – adding hydrogen

to harden the liquid fat – thus; it’s in its purest form.

Hydrogenated oils like trans fat work to increase the bad

cholesterol in our body. You wouldn’t want such unnatural and

unhealthy substance inside you. Hence, always consider extra

virgin coconut oil; it is the healthier choice.

STABLE IN HIGH COOKING TEMPERATURES

Unlike some plant oils, coconut oil has a high smoking

temperature, meaning the oil is fairly stable and lesser

susceptible to heat; thus enabling you to use it for many

food preparations such as baking for example. It is also an

alternative food choice for vegans, who tend to avoid animal

fats.

90 | EXQUISITE

Coconut oil crave.indd 90

28/4/2016 4:10:38 PM

LIGHT, COCONUT-Y TASTE

It contains a very light hint of sweetness and coconut. It’s

refreshingly tasty and could be used in many food recipes

from simple to elaborate dishes. You can consider adding a

teaspoon of coconut oil into your coffee and tea, or spreading

some on your bread or toast instead of the usual jam or butter.

USE THE OIL FOR BODY MASSAGE

Coconut oil also makes for wonderful therapy for the skin

especially if you have dry skin. When slathered onto your skin,

coconut oil seeps and penetrates into your epidermis and

hydrates it instantly. This is why, it is a popular choice as a

massage oil; easy enough to do it at home.

CONDITION YOUR HAIR AND SPLIT ENDS

Another DIY treatment you can do at home; pour a 50-cent

coin drop into your palm and then spread it over your hair,

from scalp to roots. Coconut oil in some studies has shown

to be good for rejuvenating and strengthening hair; thereby

reducing hair loss. Thus, it is a popular ingredient in many hair

products like tonics or shampoos. For a deep conditioning of

your crowning glory, comb through the oil-infused hair and

then wrap a towel around your head and wait 20-30 minutes

for it to do its work. Then, shampoo it off.

OIL CLEANSING METHOD

Supporters of coconut oil have reported good reviews in using

coconut oil to cleanse their face. Depending on your face type,

coconut oil is generally better suited for dryer skin types. Pour

a little on a cotton ball or pad then gently wipe it across your

face. Many have claimed that coconut oil works on mascara

removal as well. Once you have wiped your whole face with it,

wash your face with your usual cleanser.

Coconut oil has surfaced quite a bit in recent years. Though,

we may know that coconut oil contains saturated fat, it also

contains a number of compounds that work to reverse the

unhealthy benefits from consuming saturated fat; thus making

this a newly considered food choice in our diet. Even so, we

should also be careful not to increase our intake unnecessarily

but to consider whole foods in our balanced diet as a priority

instead. Coconut oil in skincare similarly must be practised

with care, particularly if you have acne-prone or sensitive skin.

As with all skincare products, a patch test might be needed

and a two-week or more trial carried out to affirm coconut oil’s

benefits and long-term usage for your skin.

Digital Detox Weekend

retreat at Alila Villas Soori

in Bali includes a series of

masterclasses designed to

help reduce tech overload and

improve quality of life

17th – 19th June 2016

Technology is here to stay and is undeniably useful, but

being endlessly connected – texting, checking emails

and social media sites – can have unhealthy physical

and mental effects.

Harvard Medical School scientists have found that “using

a cell phone or laptop before bed can disrupt the body’s

production of melatonin and negatively affect sleep quality”.

Another study published by the Public Library of Science

found that “the more time a person spends on Facebook, the

more dissatisfied they ultimately feel with their own life”.

If you have become a slave to your digital devices, design

and spa resort Alila Villas Soori can bring you the perfect

opportunity to find a healthy balance between staying

connected and switching off.

Life Coach and Aurora Spa Founder Lyndall Mitchell returns

to Alila Villas Soori to conduct a Digital Detox Retreat from

17th – 19th June 2016. This weekend retreat will focus on

imparting practical skills and strategies to reduce stress and

distractor influences, showing guests how to enjoy a more

positive and healthy integration of technology in your life.

The retreat will include a series of masterclasses designed

to help reduce tech overload and improve quality of life. Get

back to basics in “Unplugged”, discovering how to effectively

unplug and establish foundations to de-clutter, de-stress and

simplify life. “Connect & Reflect” identifies daily drainers and

personal “technology” wheel of balance, aiming to create

effective boundaries for a sustainable digital relationship.

And in “Hardwiring Happiness”, guests will create their own

personal focused Future Map to give them clarity and direction

moving forward, learning to thrive and be the best version of

themselves with technology.

With meditation, yoga, healthy cuisine and spa pampering,

guests can look forward to becoming more mindful and relaxed

amid Alila Villas Soori’s serene surroundings. Guests can take

Stunning

Fjords and

Fiery Akevitt

UNESCO-protected natural

wonders and a taste of the local

Norway

BY SUSANNA PING

M

y first glimpse of a fjord was a photo on a CD cover

of Norwegian composer Edward Grieg. The pristine

still blue of the waterways sandwiched between

mountainsides pulled at my heart so profoundly that I decided

to make a trip to see them the following year.

Up close and in the vast reality of nature, a real fjord held me in

awe throughout the whole boat trip. The waters are so still and

calm, they reflect the mountains and ridges on both sides, so

that you get double vision of the fjord’s enchanting beauty.

No photo can conjure up the experience of the fjord - the

cold, the crisp, clean air with the fragrance of wild plants and

clean, salt water, the sheer size of the mountains and ridges,

the echoey sounds of the vessel slicing through the water, the

spray of waterfalls.

There are more than a thousand fjords in Norway, but the major

ones like the Nærøyfjord, the Sognefjord, the Lysefjord and

the Geirangerfjord nestle on the west coast. These wonders

of nature resemble still blue lakes but consist of salt water as

they, are afterall, extensions of the seas, often traversing deep

inland. Many of the fjords are connected to one another via the

waterways so you can sail from one fjord to another or head

back out to sea.

As you sail through the fjords, it’s not only about nature and

geography. Think of the farming people who live in these

slopy hinterlands with their livestock and fruit trees. They are

descendents of Norway’s rich farming history amidst rugged

and challenging spaces.

Akevitt is a traditional vodka type liquor distilled from grain or potato and flavoured

countries, Norwegian akevitt must mature in sherry oak casks, giving it a lovely

Traditionally, akevitt is a local remedy for indigestion, but is also a celebratory drink

EVENTS

Night Jazz

26 May 2016 - 4 June 2016

Nattjazz (Nightjazz) is the longest jazz festival in Northern

Europe and is arranged annually in late May and early June in

Bergen.

Nattjazz was founded in 1972 and is despite its age, now

stronger than ever. Every year approximately 80 concerts are

presented throughout the festival period. The main festival area

is an old sardine factory, USF Verftet (United Sardines Factory),

which now contains several concert venues plus exhibitions,

theatre, cinema and artist studios.

The music profile of Nattjazz spans through a wide range of

styles, with a main focus on modern jazz. During Nattjazz the

borderlines between jazz, rock, ethno and electronica are

explored and often wiped out. The children also get their share.

Situated north of Cebu and in the Visayan Sea,

Malapascua Island is a paradise that boasts white,

sandy beaches and clear, blue waters – the recipe for a

perfect getaway to take your mind off worldly worries.

To make things even better, the locals are so friendly that you

will probably feel like a VIP returning for the tenth time.

The hospitality of the locals on the island is nothing surprising,

given Filipinos’ friendly and helpful nature. In fact, this is one of

Philippines’ greatest charms that never fail to swoon travellers

from around the world, making them return to Philippines again

and again. Add to the fact that you are on one of the paradises

in the world, there is no doubt people are generally happier and

less stressed out.

If you are looking for a place to wind down, Malapascua is the

perfect place to take life at a slower pace. Besides deciding

what to have for your meals, there is pretty much nothing else

to worry about. This is also your chance to kick your urban

habit of instant gratification. Do not expect food and drinks to

be served within 10 minutes here, except for that bottle of Red

Horse beer that almost everyone on the island knows about.

GETTING THERE

The journey to Malapascua Island is no easy feat – you have to

cut through the sky, cross 132km of land, and take a 45-minutes

boat ride – but proves to be one that is worth every second

and effort. If adventure is what you seek, this destination is

definitely for you.

A direct flight from Singapore to Cebu takes slightly under 4

hours, followed by a 3.5 to 4-hour car ride to Maya Pier, where

a local banca boat will take you across the sea. In about 45

minutes, you will find yourself setting foot on the white sandy

beach that is otherwise known as Bounty Beach. Simply have

the resort you are staying with make the arrangements for you.

A one-way transfer would typically cost around US$100 to

$120.

TIP FOR THE ADVENTUROUS

You can always make your own way to the island. Grab a taxi

from the airport and head to the Northern Bus Terminal. Look

for the big, yellow Ceres Tours buses (Ceres Liner is without

airconditioning). This air-conditioned ride will get you to Maya

Pier comfortably in about 4.5 to 5 hours and costs less than 200

pesos per person, per way.

At Maya Pier, local boatmen will try to offer you the highest

price for the transfer to Malapascua Island. A full boat of 10

people will typically get them 1500 pesos and locals usually

pay 80 pesos for the crossing, so do your math and do not be

scammed. Also, the boat typically do not set off until the boat is

full (or you have paid enough for a private crossing).

EXPLORE THE ISLAND

Home to about 3,000 people, Malapascua Island is only about

2.5km by 1km, and can be easily and fully explored by foot in

half a day. If an exciting party is what you seek, drop by the

village at night and join in the party at their “basketball courtby-day

and disco-by-night” dance floor. Alternatively, you can

also visit the popular nightspot, Maldito bar, where both locals

and foreigners who have come to make Malapascua their

home, hang out at.

Go snorkelling or Scuba diving, island-hop and barbecue.

Many divers visit Malapascua every year for their chance to

encounter thresher sharks, rays, hammerheads, and more. If

you are into diving, head out to Monad Shoal, a world-class

dive site and probably the only place in the world that promises

you a chance to see a thresher shark! Other popular dive sites

in the region include Gato Island and Dona Marilyn Wreck.

A day trip out to the picturesque Kalanggaman Island is also

recommended. With one of the best sandbars in Philippines,

Kalanggaman Island is an island that you will not regret visiting.

Spend your day lazing on white sand, right next to the crystal

clear water where you can snorkel too. Divers can head on out

for a quick dive as well. It’s pretty much the perfect destination

that fits all. And to end it all, you will probably have lots of

postcard-worthy shots.

TREAT YOURSELF TO A LUXURIOUS SPA SESSION

A beach retreat would not be complete without a spa session.

Buena Vida Resort and Spa a professional and soothing full

body massage at just offers US$30. If possible, book a room

with Buena Vida Resort and Spa for convenience. You may just

get addicted to this indulgence that you want to book a half day

of massage, facial, and manicure and pedicure. The best part?

It can all be done under US$100.

culturally immersive experiences in compelling

locations, and a new calendar of wellness retreats to

recapture inner-calm and supercharge the body and

mind, affording a rare moment of peace and serenity.

EAST ASIA

AMANEMU – ISE SHIMA, JAPAN: OPENING 1 MARCH

Amanemu, Aman’s second resort in Japan, will launch on

1 March 2016, in time for the celebrated Sakura season.

With every room featuring its own onsen, Amanemu will be

the perfect rural complement to Aman Tokyo, successfully

launched in 2014, and is located in Ise Shima National Park,

host to the G7 summit this May.

The resort has been designed by Kerry Hill architects, the same

team responsible for the classic Japanese home aesthetic of

Aman Tokyo and has drawn inspiration from Japanese minka,

vernacular houses with traditional low-slung tiled roofs and

dark stained timber exteriors. Suites are elegantly appointed in

a composition of understated simplicity and interiors warm and

carefully crafted in light Japanese timbers.

Perched on the shores of Ago Bay, known as the ‘Bay of Pearls’

Amanemu will offer enlightening Aman journeys through

the region including private tours of the Ise Grand Shrine,

Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrine, where guests will witness

kagura, a sacred worshipping dance to the deities. Visits with

ama, female Japanese divers who played an integral role in

the development of the cultured pearl industry in the 19th

Century, can also be organised. Today the ama free-dive for

shellfish, such as oysters and abalone, and guests will have the

opportunity to spend time with them in their amagoya huts.

AMANJENA – MOROCCO, MARRAKECH – ARGAN OIL

HARVESTING

Guests of Amanjena who want to learn more about argan oil

will now have the opportunity to take part in the annual argan

nut harvest, from June to September when the fruit from the

argan tree turn gold and are ripe for picking. Guests will be

transported to a local farm where they will meet with farmers

who will talk through the harvest and production, help collect

argan nuts and then have the opportunity to view and be

involved with the process which extracts the oil from the nut.

Following this, guests will be treated to a traditional Moroccan

lunch, of course featuring freshly harvested argan oil.

Should guests wish to experience the cosmetic benefits of

the oil themselves, the Amanjena Spa offers the Moroccan

Bloom treatment, which is performed in a hammam, and which

involves the application of a unique black olive soap “sabon

beldi” to the body before a deep cleansing scrub is used. The

traditional “rhassoul”, a natural rock clay sourced in the Atlas

Mountains, is then applied as a full body mask and is followed

by an hour long body massage using argan oil.

be able to participate in the programme and will learn about

the painstaking propagation techniques developed by Ocean

Quest, a coral conservation company, who will lead the

programme, and which enable people to attach coral fragments

onto natural live rocks using ordinary super glue which is low

in toxins. This completely natural procedure enhances coral

growth in the first ten days of propagation, which encourages

the coral to naturally establish its foot hold on the live rock,

leaving no trace of the glue after two weeks.

Yogyakarta is an emerging centre of traditional Javanese

culture and contemporary Indonesian art. In 2016 Amanjiwo

will be offering an insight into this scene with exclusive tours to

the homes and studios of local artists in the region, including

Pak Yogi, a young local painter from Borobudur, who will also

be exhibiting his comical take on local village life at Amanjiwo

in September 2016.

AMANPULO – PAMALICAN ISLANDS, PHILIPPINES: PILATES,

YOGA AND BARRE (18 January – 5 April)

curated series of wellness retreats.

Cruising the coast of Vinh Hy Bay

From June 2016, guests of Amanoi will have the opportunity

to discover the rugged coastline of Vinh Hy Bay on a local

Vietnamese fishing boat. Guided by a Vietnamese fisherman

who will give an insight into how he catches his fish, his fishing

techniques, and the special methods used for catching squid,

of which over 25 varieties can be found in Vietnam’s territorial

waters, there will be a chance for guests to take part in handline

fishing and upon return to Amanoi, have their ‘catch of the day’

expertly cooked by the chefs.

Discover the Cham Culture and People

Amanoi offers a special insight into this ancient group with an

expedition which will start with an introductory trip to the Cham

museum in Danang, followed by a visit to the residence of the

last Cham princess, the descendants of which have agreed to

open their home only to guests of Amanoi. Affording a totally

immersive experience, the tours will be guided by a descendant

HOMESSOLUTIONS

How

To...

You do not need

a handyman to fix

things at home

BY SUSANNA PING

Now and then your home needs a little fixing and

sprucing up - blocked pipes, pests, dirt and stains,

humidity, squeaky doors. Many of these minor

problems can be taken care of by simple solutions

so you do not need to call expensive handymen.

SOFTEN LEATHER

That new leather sofa or cushions you just bought are a little

stiff and poky. To create a soft, supple touch that won’t jab

or pull into your skin and clothes try treating your leather.

Remember, leather furnishings are mostly made out of dried

cow skin that has been processed. Treat it like your own skin to

condition and soften it.

1Open up the pores - First step in softening your leather sofa

is by opening the pores. Gently wipe warm water all over the

surface and leave for a few minutes.

Use natural oils or petroleum jelly - With a clean cloth rub

2 organic oil such as olive, avocado, coconut or jojoba all

over the surface of the leather. The more oil you use the softer

the leather. You can also use petroleum jelly but it will not smell

as nice. Leave the oil on for a couple of hours that wipe off with

a towel. Repeat the process many times over the course of a

few months and you willl have comfortable, soft leather that

you can relax on. The oils will not stain but will be absorbed

into the leather.

UNBLOCK PIPES

Your own eco-friendly unblocker solution will effectively clean

your pipes and unclog them. You’ve tried store bought ones

but with pets and children around they may be unsafe and

too harsh. Use vinegar, baking soda and water to solve your

problem.

• Pour hot water down your blocked drain pipe

• Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda, and let sit for 10 minutes

• Follow up with 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup hot water. Let sit for

10 minutes.

• Finally pour one more cup of hot water to flush away the

loosened dirt and residue.

GET RID OF PESKY ANTS

Two seconds after spilling some sweet juice on the table,

the ants make a bee line for it. This has been irritating you

for months. Getting rid of ants is not easy, and needs some

persistance.

120 | EXQUISITE

Homes Solutions.indd 120

26/4/2016 7:08:48 PM

Kill the scouts - If you see a single

1 ant hunting around, this is the scout

ant, sent by the colony to look for food

sources. Kill this ant before it can return

to the colony and tell its peers to come

out in numbers.

Kill the queen - The best way to kill

2 ants is to destroy the queen, the main

source of ants in your home. She is the

one that produces thousands of ants.

The trouble is you will have to locate the

nest to find her. The queen usually sits at

the bottom of the nest. But kill the queen

and you effectively wipe out the ants.

Bait - Mix 1 tablespoon jam, 2

3 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon of

water and 2 teaspoons of borax to

form a paste. Place this mixture on a

bit of cardboard and leave it where the

ants are active. The ants will take this

poisoned paste to the queen and thus

kill the colony. Borax (sodium tetraborate

or sodium borate) is safe for humans,

used in natural laundry detergents,

multipurpose cleaners, fungicides,

preservatives, insecticides, herbicides,

and disinfectants.

GET RID OF ODOURS IN THE REFRIGERATOR

• Clean all the shelves and drawers with a little vinegar mixed with water

• Get rid of brown vegetables and expired produce

• Open a box of baking soda and leave it in the fridge

• Put freshly ground coffee in a cup and leave it in the fridge - coffee absorbs smells

effectively

FIX MINOR SCRATCHES ON HARDWOOD FLOORS

• Use a soft cloth and clean the area of the scratches with a hardwood floor cleanser

• Use a damp cloth and wipe off the cleanser, and let dry for a few minutes

• Apply a new layer of protective coating. This can be a shellac, sealant or other finish.

• Let dry completely overnight.

GET RID OF MILDEW ON FABRIC

• Rinse the fabric and place in direct sunlight to dry. Mildew cannot stand sunlight.

• Use a wire brush to brush off the mildew. Do this outside so that you do not

redistribute mildew pores into your home.

• Cover mildew area with fabric bleach and soak for about 1 hour. Wash in washing

machine.

HOMESDECOR

Embellish

the Hallway

Add a touch of character to this underutilised

space

BY WONG YEN SAN

The hallway may be one of the most under-dressed

spaces in your house. The hallway may be the pathway

that leads to the rooms inside the house or the space at

the front door where guests first arrive. If the pathway

is a short one, then the more we leave it alone because the

scope to decorate it is limited. For some, the hallway is merely

a space where we transition from one point to another; it’s the

en-route to the living room or bedroom and seldom a place

we’d stop to chat or to carry about any task. And, even when

we have guests, we usually lead them across the hallway to the

living or dining room for drinks or a comfortable chat.

While it’s true that the scope for grandeur is limited, some of

us would still love to dress up every inch of the house; and

the hallway – as with the rest of the house – is still a great

canvas to imprint our character and personality. Just a place for

passing through? It is definitely more. The hallway has potential

to be transformed into a cosy nook or a splendid picture gallery

of poster art or family pictures depending on your design

theme. And how about dinner parties or celebrations? When

guests come over, they will usually mill around every spare

inch of your space, sometimes standing or chatting along the

hallway. This is a perfect opportunity to showcase your design

flair.

You might have watched a couple of old movies in the past

showing the male lead, drenched in the storm, stopping by

a sprawling but usually run-down inn for the night. And he’d

be led up the stairs by an aged butler clutching a flickering

candlelight, into the dimly-lit narrow hallway, lined with eerie

portraits and taxidermy art. While we need not replicate this for

our very own hallway, what and how we decorate the space

with, are important to creating the desired ambience.

REINFORCE THE DESIGN THEME

Often, it’s the little details in a space that seal the look; it

could be the choice of eclectic furniture or the penchant for

rugged textures in the cupboard finishing. Whether it’s a

monochromatic look or a minimalistic style, the hallway like

any other space in the house, can help reinforce the theme.

Consider painting the hallway in an outstanding shade like

black to make a statement; or use patterned black and white

wallpaper to create a break in the monotony and visual flow

especially if the rest of the walls are painted in neutral colour.

‘‘

The hallway has great potential

to be transformed into a cosy

nook or a splendid picture

design theme.

‘‘

28/4/2016 4:03:18 PM

CREATE THE MOOD WITH LIGHTING

We would usually place our elaborate lighting where the traffic

flow is the highest; like the dining room for example. Though

it’s clearly justified to do so, why not consider installing quirky

lights along the hallway instead? Or hang a chandelier if the

ceiling is lofty enough to hold it. Other lighting options like a

street lamp on the wall together with an interesting signage

might be interesting to have as well. This is provided that the

space is big enough for the ease of walking. Style must meet

function and lifestyle too; it’s unwise to install the wall lamp

when you’ve a high tendency of knocking into it.

MATCH THE FLOORING

You may like to think of the hallway as a separate space

altogether in order to better pin down the look. Instead of

adopting the same flooring tiles as the living area, why not go

for another tile design in another colour instead? The rooms

usually would be laid with another set of flooring perhaps with

wood laminate, parquet, or tiles. Depending on your home

theme, you may like to cement screed the hallway flooring for

a raw, untextured look or roll a long rug in the middle to amp

up the cosiness and warmth.

WALL UP

One of the most popular ways of dressing up the hallway is to

display family portraits. Others might document their growingup

years, graduation pictures, or even milestone events like

weddings or exotic travels. Still there are some who like to

display artworks of artists they like or even paintings they have

a hand in producing along the hallway such that it looks like

a mini art gallery. Instead of two or three pictures or posters,

consider pinning them in a row or two to create a gallery feel

for added style.

BOOK IT

If the space permits, the space can be customised as a built-in

storage or bookshelf. Some parts of the wall can be made

into a custom shelf so that space along the walkway is not

compromised. You may like to convert the entire wall into

the bookshelf or parts of it; style the shelving design such

that you’re moving through the aisle of a library or bookstore.

Add an ottoman or chic stool to play the part; installing the

bookshelf this way encourages your guest to pick up a material

he finds interesting to read and also creates more topics for

conversations during a dinner party.

MIRROR ON THE WALL

Mirrors help to enlarge the perspective of a space to make it

bigger especially so when the hallway is narrow, small or dark

– away from natural light. Having mirrors cut into customised

shapes and sizes can also complement the space décor.

Mirrors also help to do a reality check if you’re stepping out of

the house in clingy hot pants.

SHELVING ART

Different types of shelving can be installed at various heights

on the two walls to create a form of visual art. Add a pop of

colours by erecting multi coloured shelving. Display knick

knacks or picture frames for a homely feel.

There’s a lot we can do to embellish our hallway; however we

should not go overboard such as placing too bulky furniture

in an already tight place. Go with the space constraints when

deciding on the design factors and the hallway would be more

than a place for passing through.

Lustrous

Ultra-

Compact

Surfaces

Dekton XGloss by Cosentino introduces an

innovative line of polished ultra-compact

surfaces characterised by their crystal shine

The Cosentino Group, renowned for their distribution

of innovative surfaces for architecture and design,

has launched Dekton XGloss, a new line of polished

high-tech ultra-compact surfaces characterised by

their dazzling crystal shine. Especially excited to launch the

range in Singapore, the Cosentino Group is convinced that the

possibilities are limitless in this vibrant city.

This new line in the Dekton range, produced by means of

an advanced nanotechnological treatment and a mechanical

polishing process, offers an extraordinary luminous and

crystal-like shine which, combined with the hardness and very

high resistance, makes this a line of exceptional performance

which is unique in the market.

In order to achieve this spectacular result, the Cosentino

Group´s R&D department spent almost two years developing a

pioneering and exclusive treatment based on a nanotechnology

called the “Nanocoating Process”. In addition to a high gloss

finish, this technology gives Dekton XGloss water-repellent

properties which make it extraordinarily stain-resistant without

altering the material´s other properties or adding any outer

coating to the slabs.

Dekton XGloss remains equally versatile and appropriate for

any type of use, due to its very nature and the Particle Sintering

Technology (PST) with which it is produced, giving the surfaces

superior technical properties such as resistance to UV rays and

thermal shock, amongst others. This makes Dekton the perfect

choice for both indoor and outdoor, vertical and horizontal

use, whether for floors, stairs, façades or wall surfaces. These

characteristics, together with the large size of the Dekton slabs,

offer innumerable creative possibilities for architects, designers

but more excitingly, recently in retail and F&B environments.

Singapore’s top Chef, Andre Chiang from Restaurant Andre,

ranked No.3 in 2016 Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards list

and No.1 in the Best Restaurant in Singapore list for 4th year

he recently refurbished his restaurant using the innovative

ultra-compact surface from the entrance to the heart of the

restaurant, instantly injecting elegance and sophistication to the

HOMESHYGIENE

Furniture Hygiene

Experts

Just as how faded or mismatched

clothes can make or break your

outfit, unclean furniture can ruin

the whole feel of your home.

Good upholstery upkeep can further

accentuate and complement your interior

decoration.

When it comes to furniture maintenance,

most of us settle for convenient

traditional DIY methods such as steam

cleaners, dusting brushes or bottles of

upholstery foam sprays. But other times,

we hardly clean at all; therefore are not

fully aware of the effect it has on our

furniture. As a result your furniture may

look worn-out and grimy.

UPHOLSTERY CARE

If only maintaining all forms of household

elements are as easy as wiping off

excess dust, on your marbled floors.

The sheer notion of us mere domestic

mortals preserving fabric upholstery,

quaint leather sofas and that precious

carpet only leads us to one question.

How?

Thankfully for us, there are professional

services provided by Furniture Hygiene

Experts(FHE) that will do just that. FHE

uses a premier German cleaning system

that leaves no chemical residue on your

furniture. Only using top-quality products

such Scotchgard Protector, furniture

treated are restored to its former glory.

When it comes to protecting your

investments, Scotchgard protector

naturally is the to-go tool that is

necessary in maintaining your furniture.

Raved by both professionals and home

users alike, Scotchgard provides topnotch

care and does wonders repelling

water and dirt. Fellow Scotchgard

devotee Alicia concurs, “I had forgotten

how well this product works. If

something gets spilled, the liquid beads

up and you simply wipe it away. It is

incredible how well it protects fabric

surfaces.”

Good upholstery

upkeep

can further

accentuate and

complement

your interior

decoration.

An attempt to clean a sofa may require a

lot more time than expected, due to the

prolonged drying time required. There is

a tendency for the watery cleaning

product used to seep in the furniture’s

stuffing, while cleaning. Unfortunately,

once watery products soak the stuffing

underneath the fabric, the possibility of

mildew cultivating is high. For the

furniture to completely dry, drying time

may extend to a few days. FHE however,

have found a solution that promises

minimal drying time. Give it an hour or

two; and you will be lounging on your

favourite coach in no time.

The aftermath of a sanitising combat will

draw questions regarding the possible

‘side-effects’. While some may have the

assumption that the usage of heavyduty

products may alter the quality of

the prized furniture, it is not always the

case. The key is to use the right product

for the right kind of fabric material.

Ultimately, the appropriate products

and the treatment process will not affect

the colour or the fabric texture of your

furniture.

ORGANISMS IN MATTRESSES

And we thought mobile phones and

computer keyboards were major hosts

for mold and bacteria. Newly upholstered

furniture attracts dust mites; particles

and bacteria, which can lead to poor air

quality in the room. Upholstery cleaning

is more than just updating the look of

your furniture. It helps improve the air

circulation, which can otherwise lead to

adverse effects on your family.

Don’t just stop at furniture, but sanitize

other bacteria-laden products as well

Among the professional services that

FHE provides is Mattress Cleaning. Using

powerful frequency waves along with a

powerful HEPA* vacuum, FHE eliminates

existing harmful organisms that may

reside on your mattress. The same

concept applies to FHE’s professional

carpet cleaning method. Coffee stains,

odour, dirt and bugs are removed with

the use of FHE’s innovative technology.

FHE’s sanitisation system cleans both

carpets and mattresses hygienically

without the use of chemicals.

OTHER SERVICES

In addition to professional upholstery,

mattress and carpet cleaning services, FHE

provides Leather Care Cleaning is crucial for

the purpose of removing dirt and oils (which

over time, may break down the leathers

protective coating). Treating it will help to

maintain the moisture balance in leather.

This is

important for keeping the leather supple

making it less likely to absorb spillages.

It is recommended that professional

cleaning be done on a regular basis, and not

wait for it to get visibly dirty. The

dirtier furniture becomes, the harder it is to

restore it to its original glory. With proper

maintenance, attention and care, the shelf

life of your household products will last a

lifetime. Perhaps, it’s time to bookmark the

Furniture Hygiene Experts.

DRINKWINE

The world’s pre-eminent wine event will be taking place

in Spain for the first time, as the candidacy of the city of

Logroño, La Rioja, presented by the Fundación para la

Cultura del Vino, has won the bid to host the Institute of

Masters of Wine’s 9th International Symposium from 14 to 17

June 2018.

The Symposium, which is staged every four years, brings

together leading producers, scientists, thinkers, brand owners,

marketers and communicators for four spectacular days of

conference, debate and tastings. Entertaining and informative

speakers will be chosen from among the leading specialists

in their field. The social side of the Symposium is also very

important and delegates will be treated to a succession of

lunches and dinners sponsored by leading global marques and

institutions.

Sarah Jane Evans MW, Chairman of the Institute of Masters of

Wine], said:

“I am delighted that Spain is to host our 9th International

Symposium. This decision recognises the exceptionally vibrant

and diverse world of wine in Spain today, and the renewed

energy, innovation and focus on quality that are its hallmarks.”

The winning proposal came from the Foundation for the

Culture of Wine (La Fundación para la Cultura de Vino), which

is the principal sponsor for the event. The Logroño bid is

also supported by the Spanish Government, the regional

government of La Rioja, the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade

(ICEX), and the Consejo Regulador of the DOCa Rioja wine

appellation.

Luis Miguel Beneyto, Chairman of La Fundación para la

Cultura de Vino, [also pictured above] said:

“We are very excited to be bringing the world of wine together

in 2018 to share in Spain’s heritage and hospitality. We look

forward to introducing delegates to our beautiful country, our

gastronomy and, of course, our wines. At the same time we

want Logroño to be the place where the ideas that shape the

future of our industry are aired and discussed.”

Logroño is the capital city of the autonomous community of La

Rioja. The Rioja denomination, with over 2,000 years of wine

producing history, is the leading wine region of Spain, which is

in turn one of the world’s largest wine producing and exporting

countries. Rioja has more than 500 wineries, including some

of the oldest and most famous bodegas in the world, and more

than 63,000 hectares under vine.

Penny Richards, Executive Director of the Institute of Masters

of Wine, said:

“We received a number of very competitive bids from cities and

regions around the world to host the 2018 Symposium. This

Spanish bid stood out not only due to the strength of their offer,

but also for the sense of co-operation amongst the various

organisations and agencies

involved. We were

delighted by the sheer

appetite and enthusiasm

to bring this incredible

event to Spain for the first

time. We cannot wait to

work with the Spanish

team to deliver a fabulous

Symposium in Logroño.”

Logroño is one hour from

Bilbao international airport,

and offers connections by

train and bus to Madrid

and other major cities in

Spain.

THE INSTITUTE OF MASTERS OF WINE

The Institute of Masters of Wine, which is a non-profit

organisation, stands for excellence, interaction and learning.

The Institute, which has its headquarters in London, runs

courses, events and examinations on four continents.

In addition to passing the Institute’s exams, Masters of

Wine are required to sign the Code of Conduct and join the

Institute before they are entitled to the initials ‘MW’. The

Code of Conduct insists that Masters of Wine should act with

honesty and integrity, and use every opportunity to share their

understanding of wine with others.

There are currently 324 students, from 32 countries, in the

Master of Wine Study Programme.
