D135 parents, students meet new administrators at first of two events
Meredith Dobes
Freelance Reporter
A steady stream of parents
and children flowed in
and out of the doors of the
Orland School District 135
Administration Center Aug.
10, eager to meet their new
administrators for the upcoming
school year.
They were in attendance
for the first of two meet and
greets the school district is
hosting for the community
to get to know new Superintendent
DJ Skogsberg, as
well as other administrators
new to the district.
A second, similar event was
scheduled to be held Monday,
Aug. 15, at High Point
School, and Skogsberg said
he plans to host coffee events
at each of the other campuses
as the school year — officially
slated to begin Tuesday, Aug.
23 — gets rolling.
Skogsberg, who was
D135’s assistant director of
curriculum, instruction and
assessment from July 2010-
June 2012, returned to the
district this year after having
served as superintendent of
Taft School District 90 for
four years.
He said the aim of the
meet and greet was to give
community members the opportunity
to put names with
faces and open the lines of
communication.
“The most important thing
is to make personal connections,
and this is the start of
doing that,” he said.
Skogsberg said that, in addition
to getting to know the
district’s community, one
of his initial goals is to help
provide teachers with the
tools they need to make the
greatest positive impact on
students, particularly as the
district will need to issue new
state assessments this year.
“Our effectiveness is contingent
upon our relationship
with the students, parents and
members of the community,”
Skogsberg said. “It’s all about
making those connections.”
Other administrators who
are new to the D135 community
this year include
Lindsay Reipsa, assistant
principal at Centennial and
Park schools; Laurie Patterson,
assistant principal at
Center and Prairie schools;
Courtney Milligan, assistant
principal at Liberty School;
and Dana Karczewski, principal
at Meadow Ridge.
Reipsa comes to the district
from Frankfort School
District 157-C, where she
taught first grade for nine
years. She went to school at
D135 as a child, and she said
it is nice to be able to return
to see some familiar faces, as
well as some new ones.
“Everyone is so kind and
welcoming,” Reipsa said.
“It’s really exciting. ... I look
forward to seeing everyone
the week school starts. We
have our kindergarten open
house [Aug.] 22.
“I’m excited to get everyone
in the building with a
smile on their face and ready
to learn.”
Patterson taught at Meadow
Ridge Intermediate
School in the district for nine
years before being promoted
to her new role. She said she
is lucky and excited to be
able to stay in the district, and
she looks forward to making
new connections with other
staff members and students.
“My main goal from the
start is being a sponge and
learning as much as I can,”
she said. “I’m a proud former
teacher of 135, looking
to spread my passion
and love for education on a
broader scale.”
Milligan came to the district
from Chicago Public
Schools. She said she is excited
to be part of a district
where she can see herself
staying forever.
Her primary goals are
to acclimate to the culture
in the district and listen as
much as she can, she said.
“There are so many great
things that are working well,
and I want to see if there are
any opportunities to enhance
them,” she said.
Finally, Karczewski came
to the district from Plainfield
Community Consolidated
School District 202, and has
experience both as a teacher
and as an assistant principal.
She sought a district that was
smaller in size in order to be
able to create closer relationships
with families and the
community, she said.
“The most important thing
is building relationships, and
I’m looking forward to doing
that,” she said. “I want to
get to know the students and
the families, and understand
what they are looking for and
how to meet those needs.”
Celia and Mohammed David,
parents of an incoming
first-grader who is to attend
Center School, came to the
event to get to know the administration
and staff.
Mohammed said he wanted
to know about the schools’
level of security, as well as
the staff’s teaching philosophy,
and Celia said she was
happy to hear the district offers
extra help for students
who fall behind, as well as
for more advanced students.
“I feel comfortable,” Celia
said. “They were very approachable
and friendly.”
“And they didn’t stumble
on questions,” Mohammed
added. “They had all their
answers down.”
The SoundS of Life
A Bird Singing …
A Child laughing …
Someone whispering “I
love you” …
These are some of the beautiful
sounds of life. Are you
missing them? There over
28 million Americans who
suffer from hearing loss, so
you are not alone. Only approximately
6 million Americans
actually use hearing aids.
Those with hearing loss may
choose not to wear an instrument
because they are afraid
of what it will look like, or of
what their friends might say.
Advancements in technology
and design have taken great
steps to make hearing instruments
more appealing to all
people.
The decision to purchase
hearing aids is a very personal
one, but hearing loss affects
you and everyone around
you – family, friends and coworkers.
Missing or misunderstanding
speech can lead to
may problems. In fact, those
who have difficulty hearing
miss out on more than just
conversation.
Hearing aids cannot fully restore
your hearing, but they
can help your quality of life
by helping you hear sounds
more clearly.
end of the fiscal year.
“On the average, after removing
extraordinary events
— such as paying down the
debt and purchasing computers
— our revenues and
our expenditures have been
about $76 million per year
for the last five years,” Finance
Director Carl Forn
explained by email Aug.
10. “There is a natural ebb
and flow in both revenues
and expenditures of about
$1 million each year. Due
to the extraordinary events
this year of paying [Property
Tax Appeal Board] refunds
to Orland Square Mall, our
revenues will drop to $75
million. This extraordinary
event will last two years.”
Forn presented the tentative
budget to the D135
School Board members Aug.
8 at the meeting. He said the
district is not anticipating
any new growth in revenue
this fiscal year. He said the
decline in the Consumer
Price Index, among other
factors, is prohibiting any
growth in property tax revenues.
For expenditures, Forn
said salaries increased
roughly 1 percent, as compared
to prior contracts.
The district also is intending
to spend money on new
technology for kindergarten
classes, as well as for new
staff.
During the meeting, Forn
said board policy is to have
a 45- to 55-percent fund balance-to-expenditure
ratio.
“With expenditures averaging
about $6.3 million per
month, the policy requires
approximately six months
of expenditures to be held in
reserve, or about $37.8 million,”
Forn said.
According to Forn, the operating
fund balance at the
end of the fiscal year is projected
to be $38.9 million —
a 50.5 percent fund balanceto-expenditure
ratio.
“This budget is going to
leave us in compliance with
the board policy,” Forn said.
“Prior year balances were
sufficient to cover eight
months of expenditures.
“There’s a philosophical
argument, if you will, of
fund balances being too high
Round It Up
A brief recap of action and discussion from the Aug.
8 meeting of the Orland School District 135 Board of
Education
• As part of its consent agenda, the District 135
School Board voted 7-0 to approve a military fee waiver
for education fees. This is for students in the district
who have a parent or guardian on active duty in the
U.S. military for the 2016-2017 academic year.
• Also as part of the consent agenda, the School
Board members voted 7-0 to renew memberships with
the Illinois Association of School Boards ($10,005)
and the South Cooperative Organization for Public
Education ($2,014).
• During the Committee of the Whole meeting, D135
Director of Curriculum Dave Snyder discussed a plan
to come up with a standards-based grading report
for students. He outlined the process, including how
the district intends to form committees that involve
parents, teachers and administrators.
too low. At one point, having
eight months of expenditures
in the bank could be considered
too high. The reason we
settled at about six months
was we were looking back
at history, and we know that
there was at least one time
where property tax revenues
received from the county
were significantly late about
six months. Should that happen,
we would have been
forced in the future for tax
anticipation warrants ...
which are costly forms of
debt. Better to guard against
New obstacles prove a major draw for 5K
Jason Maholy
Freelance Reporter
Nearly 400 weekend
warriors slogged and slithered
through mud, crawled
through water -filled pipes
and subjected themselves to
other various forms of physical
discomfort Saturday,
Aug. 13, in Orland Park.
It was all for the sake of
fun, of course, at the annual
Pandemonium in the Park —
a 5K obstacle course held on
the rolling terrain of Centennial
Park West.
The 363 people who preregistered
for the challenge
accounted for the most in the
event’s short history, and that
number likely climbed to at
least 400, as more people
signed up on the morning of
the race, according to Orland
Park Recreation Department
Facility Administrator Ray
Piattoni.
This year’s incarnation of
Pandemonium was designed
to be wetter and muddier
than those of the first two
years, and thunderstorms
that swept through the
southwest suburbs the previous
day and the morning of
the event exacerbated those
conditions. That was a good
thing, Piattoni said.
“We were kind of stressing
about it,” he said. “[The
storms] made it hard for our
crews to get the course ready.
But it worked in our favor,
because it made the course
really muddy and fun.”
“Fun” is the optimal word,
as Pandemonium is intended
to be a family- oriented challenge
that can be handled by
people of all ages.
“That’s really the goal of
the race, is to have fun — be
safe, but have fun,” Piattoni
said. “In the world of racing,
you can do 5K, 10K; you can
do anything. We wanted to
come up with something that
Racers run through the color burst at the start of Pandemonium in the Park Saturday, Aug. 13, in Orland Park.
Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
has kind of a niche. We’re
not a Tough Mudder; we’re
more of a family- oriented
obstacle course. We took
some elements from lots
of obstacles, foam races —
those types of things — and
combined it into one race.”
In addition to plenty of
water and mud, Pandemonium
featured climbing walls,
a foam slide and an icy dip
in a plastic -lined garbage
container. A pleasantly cool
morning under overcast skies
provided ideal conditions for
participants who navigated a
winding, undulating course,
marked by chalk lines on the
slick grass.
Janice Dennis, of Tinley
Park, was participating
in the event for the second
time and took on the challenge
with her friend Mina
Warfield, of Orland Hills,
teenage daughter Alex, and
Alex’s friends Rachel Kolic
and Kaitlyn Mathis, both of
Orland Park.
The three teen girls were
doing Pandemonium for the
third time.
“It’s crazy,” Alex Dennis
said as the group gathered
near the starting line. “The
obstacles are so fun but kind
of hard, sometimes messy.”
But that messiness is part
of the appeal.
“We want to get messy,”
Alex said.
“Getting messy is just
fun,” Kaitlyn added.
Warfield has run 5Ks but
has wanted to participate in
a mud run.
“So we figured we’d just
do it together,” she said. “It’s
just fun. I just don’t want to
get hurt.”
Janice and Alex ran Pandemonium
this past year and
were excited to see more
obstacles were added to the
course for this year’s running.
“I like the challenge,” Janice
said, adding that she has
participated in a mud run in
the past. “We just have fun.
You see tires in the water,
and in your mind you think,
‘I can do this,’ but you can’t,
and pretty much everybody
falls down. The mud hills
can be tough, too, because
you’re trying to find your
footing.”
Cassie Legerski ran in
Pandemonium as part of a
group that included her son
David and friends Kim and
Courtney Sustr and Jeff
Hickstein. The group was
found at the finish line, wet
and catching their breaths
but clean after the dip in the
ice bath that was the course’s
final obstacle.
“We’re old, and we want
to know we can still do it,”
said Legerski, an Orland
Park resident who runs 5Ks.
“It’s a blast. I don’t think I
can do a Tough Mudder, so I
figured this is a soft version
of a Tough Mudder, so that’s
why I wanted to do this.”
The five participants only
were interested in having fun
and did just that.
“This is one of the better
obstacle races I’ve done,”
said Courtney Sustr, of
Bolingbrook. Hickstein, of
Orland Park, said one of the
most challenging aspects of
the course was belly crawling
through mud up a hill
and under a net, while a drill
sergeant screamed at participants
to “Stop being a baby!”
“That was tough, because
I hurt my knees doing it,”
Hickstein said. “It was on
grass, and my knees were
still bothering me.”
Crawling through corrugated
drainpipe filled with
muddy water, then exiting
onto a swampy depression
also proved difficult.
“You don’t know how
deep it is; then you get down
to the bottom and you sink
Kelly Culhane (left) and Marlandis Mims, both of Orland
Park, stretch before the race.
into the mud, and it’s a lot
deeper than you think it is,”
Kim Sustr said. “We were
pretty much covered in mud
at one point.”
“But that just made it all
fun,” Hickstein added. “It
was great. It was well organized.
They were challenging
and fun and different.
You didn’t know what to
expect [from the obstacles],
and there were plenty of
them. It wasn’t like you were
running for a long time. You
ran for a minute or two, and
you hit another obstacle.
There were so many obstacles
in it. We’ll be back next
year with a bigger group.”

Orland Culver’s employee quits, goes
public about racially insensitive display
Later-fired managerin-training
reportedly
crafted KKK scene
Bill Jones, Editor
Diamond Williams, 22,
worked at the Culver’s at
9130 W. 159th St. in Orland
Park for roughly three
months without incident,
and by all accounts she enjoyed
her job there, according
to her attorney Cannon
Lambert.
So she was astonished
when she arrived for her
shift July 16 to find a manager-in-training
had left a
display reminiscent of a Ku
Klux Klan cross burning,
apparently created by using
upturned conical water
cups with circles drawn on
them to look like hoods, and
masking tape holding two
straws together to create a
cross, according to Lambert,
of Chicago’s Karchmar &
Lambert.
“It was constructed on the
counter,” Lambert said, noting
it was in a place where
customers might have been
able to see it during business
hours.
Lambert said the display
was created the night before,
during a once-a-month overnight
store cleaning, and left
for Williams to find in the
morning.
“When she saw it, she was
floored and didn’t know how
to react,” he said.
Lambert said it remained
there for more than two
hours before she approached
the general manager about
taking care of it.
“It left her with a feeling
that she was by herself,”
Lambert said of the situation.
She contacted her mother
that day for advice, and then
talked to her family. They
approached the store manager
about the situation,
and the manager-in-training
— whose full name has not
been released by either party
— was taken off the schedule
but his employment was
not immediately terminated,
according to Lambert.
When she saw the manager-in-training
again Aug.
7, Williams opted to quit
her job at Culver’s, Lambert
said.
“She felt like it was a
place where she wasn’t comfortable
working,” he added.
She went to media with
•
the story this past week, and
the manager-in-training has
since been fired.
Culver’s issued a statement
Aug. 9 regarding the
incident.
“Culver Franchising System
Inc. and our franchisee
in Orland Park, Ill., find the
recent offensive act of a
Culver’s team member reprehensible.
Following an initial
investigation, the team
member was terminated.
The restaurant’s investigation
will continue.
“Treating everyone with
fairness and respect has been
at the heart of how Culver’s
operates. We proudly welcome
people from all walks
of life into our restaurants,
as both our guests and the
team members and restaurant
leadership who serve
them. We do not tolerate acts
of discrimination.”
Lambert said he thinks the
gesture was too little too late.
“That was a statement that
should have been made to
the rank and file right away,”
he said.
When contacted for further
comment, franchise
operator Jack Rush issued a
similar statement, with the
addition, “After reviewing
visit us online at www.opprairie.com
Attorney Cannon Lambert
said his client, 22-year-old
Diamond Williams, took the
photo of this display she
said a manager-in-training
at the Orland Park Culver’s
left for her to find.
Photo submitted
all the details of the situation,
it was determined that
the sole individual responsible
for the act must be
permanently removed from
Culver’s of Orland Park, and
that individual was terminated.”
Rush said he felt “the
statement truly speaks for itself”
and declined to discuss
the matter further, as it is a
“sensitive personnel issue.”
Lambert said he and his
client have not filed any type
of lawsuit as of press time,
but he said Culver’s needs to
be more considerate, as African-Americans
are among
the franchise’s customers,
and actions such as this create
a divide, in addition to a
alienating one of the store’s
employees.
“She was pretty unsettled
by this,” he said of Williams,
noting she worried about
confronting anyone or going
public with the information.
“She’s 22 years old and has
her whole life in front of
her.”

Orland Park CPA chosen for vacant seat on D146 board
Michael Gilbert
Contributing Editor
A lifelong Orland Park
resident has been pegged
to fill the vacant seat on the
Community Consolidated
School District 146 Board of
Education.
The School Board voted
unanimously Aug. 8 to appoint
Richard Lloyd III to
fill the term vacated by Amy
Connolly, who submitted her
resignation July 29.
D146 School Board President
John Malloy made
things official with Lloyd at
the conclusion of the meeting.
Lloyd is to fill the remainder
of Connolly’s term,
which is to expire in April
2017.
“I grew up here [in the
D146 boundaries], and now
that I have my professional
and family life established, I
felt it was time to give back
to the community,” Lloyd
said Aug. 9 during an interview
with The Orland
Park Prairie. “I have three
want to bring my expertise
in budgeting and finance to
the district.”
A certified public accountant
and registered financial
advisor at a firm in Orland
Park, Lloyd said he does
not believe there are any
glaring concerns in need of
being corrected in the district.
He said his decision
to seek a seat on the School
Board was more to bring his
strengths to D146.
“By and large, I think
the district is in very good
shape,” he said. “I’m happy
with the education my kids
are getting.”
Lloyd, 36, earned a bachelor’s
degree in economics
from the University of Chicago
and a master’s degree
in accountancy from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
“We felt Mr. Lloyd’s financial
background would
benefit the District, and we
look forward to putting that
expertise to work,” Malloy
said of the School Board’s
decision to appoint Lloyd.
“We are very pleased he will
be joining the board, as we
continue our work to offer a
top-notch education to all of
our students.”
The D146 seat is the first
time Lloyd has served on
a school board, but he is a
board member for the Twin
Hearts Autism Foundation
and has served as a board
member and treasurer for St.
Gregory’s Episcopal School
in Chicago.
D146 is comprised of
Consolidated High School D230 Board of Education
Tera Wagner hired as new director of finance
Lee Edwards
Freelance Reporter
Consolidated High School
District 230 has a new person
looking after its money.
The D230 Board of Education
held a special meeting
Aug. 9 to approve the hiring
of the district’s new Director
of Finance, Tera Wagner.
The School Board voted
5-0 in favor of Wagner, with
one member absent and another
abstaining from the
vote. Board President Rick
Nogal was absent. Board
Member Tony Serratore abstained.
School District 230 Superintendent
Dr. James Gay
said he was pleased to hire
Wagner with the school year
right around the corner.
“We start the school year
next Monday, Aug. 15, believe
it or not, and so we
had to get ready for this year
of school,” Gay said at the
meeting.
D230 Assistant Superintendent
for Business Services
John Lavelle, who was
involved with the majority
of the vetting and hiring
process, explained that two
separate hiring committees
were utilized in the selection
process for Wagner. She was
chosen from a field of 29
applicants, which was then
trimmed down to just two
candidates, who ultimately
met with Gay in the final assessment.
The first round of
interviews began on July 20,
and the process concluded
with the final round of interviews
on July 25.
Lavelle said Wagner’s
dedicated tenure at Crete-
Monee gave the districts’
selection committees a
glimpse into her personality
and work ethic. He noted
that Wagner’s focus on fiscal
responsibility and outstanding
communication skills
with fellow administrators
and staff highlighted her application.
“Wagner came to a district
that had some turnover and
ended up overcoming the
suspicion that she may come
and go like the previous
people, and when she stuck
it out and stayed, she demonstrated
leadership ability
that will serve us well here,”
Lavelle said.
Wagner’s hire will allow
the district to maximize its
application of the financial
system, Skyward, according
to Lavelle. He expressed
confidence in her ability to
train staff and transfer written
documents into the digital
system.
“It’s going to be very helpful
to have someone to team
up with who can train and instruct
our staff district-wide
on account structure, proper
use of accounts, proper accounting
procedure and
more,” Lavelle said. “She’s
very strong and understands
how to safeguard funds.
That’s all a very big plus.”
Wagner’s stellar resume
and experience proved to be
the defining factors of her
hire. She possesses a certified
Chief School Business
Official Administrative license
from the Illinois State
Board of Education to go
with 30 years of accounting
experience. She previously
was an employee of Crete-
Monee School District 201-
U, where she served as account
supervisor since 2011.
Before taking on roles at
the high school level, she
served in account management
positions at Prairie
State College and Governors
State University. She earned
a master’s and bachelor’s
degree in accounting from
GSU. She is also a former
firefighter with the Crete
Township Fire Protection
District.
Submitted by Chicago
Soldiers
Orland Park resident Dan
Drew recently announced
that Chicago Soldiers’ 2016
recipient is Capt. Tony Simone.
Drew and his family
started Chicago Soldiers six
years ago, and 100 percent
of proceeds go to Simone
and other recipients. The
organization plans to give
Simone a $20,000 check.
Simone, an Air Force
captain, was flying a special
mission in Afghanistan
when the helicopter he was
co-piloting was shot down.
He was seriously injured,
and five members of his
crew were killed. Simone
cannot use his left arm, has
trouble walking and his
brain injury has caused serious
nerve damage affecting
his everyday life. He is now
working hard to try to live a
normal life with his wife and
two young children.
The organization also is
looking for additional sponsors
for its T-shirt and tee
boxes, with 100 percent of
The event is to take place
at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20,
with a shotgun start scramble.
A patriot party is to follow
at 1 p.m. The event is to
honor Simone, past Chicago
veterans.
The event is to take place
at Meadows Golf Course,
Publisher 22nd Century Media’s annual back-to-school expo serves one and all
Lee Edwards
Freelance Reporter
Area children officially
are now ready to head back
to school.
Publisher 22nd Century
Media hosted its third annual
Back on the Bus – A Back-
To-School Expo to celebrate
the start of a new school year
with families at the Tinley
Park Convention Center on
Saturday, Aug. 13.
The free expo offered
scholastic resources, princess
and mascot appearances,
a back-to-school fashion
show, booths for more than
40 vendors and more. Free
parking and free gift bags
were offered to the first 500
attendees.
Heather Warthen, chief
events officer for 22nd Century
Media, said the expo
was designed to appeal both
to children and their parents.
“This is the third year
22nd Century Media hosted
this event, and this was just a
good, fun last day for kids to
enjoy before the school year
starts,” Warthen said.
Warthen said this year,
22nd Century Media partnered
with The Bridge Teen
Center to present a fashion
show. The Bridge Teen Center’s
new thrift store provided
the clothes that were
styled by personal stylist
Jenny Applegate. The center
offered the fashion show as
a class for the youths, with
Applegate serving as the instructor.
board for the last three years,
so this year with the fashion
show, it was really fun to
partner with them,” Warthen
said. “[Working with] The
Teen Bridge Center and
watching it all come together
on stage with the different
outfits was awesome.”
The Bridge Teen Center
is a nonprofit organization
that provides students from
seventh to 12th grades with
after-school programs that
develop direction, hope and
purpose in both supervised
and unsupervised capacities.
Children were not the only
beneficiaries of the expo,
as multiple resources were
aimed at serving parents.
Lorie Smerz, who represented
returning vendor
Chicago Parent magazine,
said parents were exposed to
great educational opportunities,
just like their children.
“This was a good way
for parents to prepare themselves
for back to school,”
Smerz said. “We’re always
thinking about the kids and
their school supplies and the
pencils they need, and I think
this was actually a good way
to get the parents ready for
back to school to show them
what resources are in their
own communities.”
Tinley Park resident
James Peterson said he and
his children all took away
something positive from the
expo. His children Kara, 8,
Erin, 6, and Gavin, 4, enjoyed
exploring the various
vendors’ tables while he
learned about the different
educational options and services
available. He said he
would recommend the expo
to fellow parents.
“There’s a lot of good information
on a lot of things
for my kids’ future and
graduation,” said Peterson,
a first-time expo attendee.
the diversity of the
vendors and the overall
family-friendly atmosphere.
But she said next year she
hopes to see a greater effort
toward serving homeschooled
children.
“This is back to school,
and there’s a large group of
people home schooling, and
I would love to see some
home stuff because they
need curriculum and …
all this stuff, too,” Shaffer
said. “They’re going back
to school, just not traditionally,
so it would be so cool
to see a little bit of homeschool
ideas.”
“In future years, we may
find that we are OK with
three months or four months,
but, for now, the policy is six
months.”
The School Board members
later voted 7-0 during
the regular meeting to approve
the public display of
the tentative 2017 fiscal year
budget for 30 days.
School Board saves money
The School Board members
also voted 7-0 to approve
a bid submitted by
Midland Paper Company for
copy paper in the amount of
$41,488.10. During the motion,
School Board member
Devin Hodge said it was the
“lowest responsible bid.”
School Board President
Laura Berry asked staff if
the bid was “significantly
less” because of the technology
rollout. Staff informed
her that it was a reduction of
roughly 50 percent.
“So, we’ve been saving
a lot of money and a lot of
trees — about half,” Berry
said. “That is awesome.”
The School Board members
also voted unanimously
to issue a notice of intent to
withdraw from the Illinois
Energy Consortium.
“The Illinois Energy Consortium
is a consortium of districts
and other governmental
entities that banded together
to purchase energy with the
consolidated bidding of all
of the [members],” Forn said.
“In 2011, this district went out
into the general market and
found that we could buy electricity
cheaper than being in
the consortium.”
The district was able to get
out of the consortium back
then by doing a similar withdrawal.
Forn said, this year, the
district found itself in a similar
situation, finding better
prices in both gas and electric
than what it would have
gotten as a member of the
consortium.

Daniel E. Laskowski, 25, of
8207 S. Nashville Ave. in Burbank,
was charged July 21 with theft after
he allegedly increased a bill by
$15 by altering the tip line on a receipt
at Fox’s Pizza, 9655 W. 143rd
St., where he worked. A customer
brought a bill to the attention of the
restaurant when it became clear the
amount had been raised, and the
employee’s transaction receipts
were reviewed, police said.
July 26
• Robert Charles Brown, 36, of
9150 W. 84th Ave. in Hickory
to take 23 items valued at a total
of $210.27 from a home improvement
store in the 7300 block of
159th Street. He reportedly tried to
take four new packages of copper
furnace/water heater thermocouple
kits, packages of clamps, valves
and spring links from the store.
When a loss prevention agent tried
to stop him, he pushed her, got into
a 2003 Chevy Cavalier and fled the
scene, police said. The vehicle reportedly
was stopped in the 7900
block of 159th Street. Brown was
in the backseat, with a bulge in his
lower left pant leg, where he concealed
some of the items, police
2007 Buick Regal he was driving
near his residence. Hult was driving
in excess of the posted 20 mph
speed limit and not wearing a seat
belt before he was stopped while
pulling into his driveway, police
said. An officer reportedly spotted
a bag containing a yellow rock-like
substance consistent with crack cocaine
inside the pocket of the open
driver’s-side door during the stop.
Police did not provide a weight in
the report. Warnings were issued
for speeding and failure to wear a
seat belt, police added.
July 20
• Kenneth J. Childers, 18, of 9200
Wheeler Drive in Orland Park, was
charged with DUI-intoxicating
substances, possession of drug paraphernalia,
possession of alcohol
by a minor-under 21 and failure to
reduce speed to avoid an accident
after he allegedly struck a building
at 9950 Shady Lane while driving a
2008 Nissan Altima. A witness said
he stopped to talk in the roadway
for roughly one minute before he
hit the gas and struck the building,
75-100 feet off the roadway, police
said. He reportedly had an odor of
cannabis, glassy eyes with pinpoint
pupils. Two prescription bottles
were found in the center console,
police said. A metal pipe with cannabis
residue was found inside one,
police said. Field sobriety tests
were not conducted, as Childers
required hospital transport, police
said. He reportedly refused blood
and urine samples at the hospital.
A full, unopened beer was found in
the trunk, police added.
July 18
• Marchino Culbreath, 29, of
21744 Carol Ave. in Sauk Village,
was charged with leaving the scene
of an accident, failure to report an
accident, failure to reduce speed
to avoid an accident and no valid
driver’s license after he allegedly
struck another vehicle while driving
near the intersection of 159th
Street and Harlem Avenue, and
then left the scene. He was driving
westbound on 159th Street and
tried to turn right onto Harlem Avenue
when he struck the other vehicle,
police said. Both the victim
and a witness provided information,
including a description of the
vehicle and driver, as well as a possible
license plate sequence, police
said. The vehicle Culbreath was
driving was found in a rear parking
lot at 7600 W. 159th St., where a
witness saw him leave the vehicle
and walk southbound, police said.
He was stopped and identified
shortly thereafter, police added.
Manchac, of Crestwood,
learn modern techniques to
the centuries-old practice of
canning during a cooking
class held Aug. 6 at Pick.
At Garden Patch Farms in
Homer Glen.
Canning or preserving,
commonly referred as “putting
up,” is the method of
packing, heating and sealing
fruit, vegetables and even
meat to preserve food for future
use.
“I’m just starting to get
into this whole canning
thing,” Manchac said. “I
watched a video on YouTube
and was able to put up a couple
batches of pickles in the
in canning — the
latest in a series of cooking
For Manchac, the experience
“I love pickles so much;
Convicted felon arrested on new drugdelivery
charge at his Orland Park home
Bill Jones, Editor
A convicted
felon from
Orland Park
was arrested
again in the
early morning
of Thursday,
Aug. 11, after Grieco
Orland Park
police and the South Suburban
Emergency Response
Team executed a search
warrant on his home.
Anthony J. Grieco, 23,
of 8231 Arrowhead Lane in
Orland Park, was charged
with one count of unlawful
possession of a controlled
substance with intent to deliver,
a Class 3 felony, according
to a press release
From Aug. 11
issued the same day by the
Orland Park Police Department.
The search warrant was
served at 5 p.m. Aug. 11,
following a monthslong investigation
into the sale of
illegal narcotics by occupants
of the home, according
to the press release.
Grieco reportedly was arrested
at the same address
in July 2010, when Orland
Park police executed a
search warrant for the illegal
sale of cannabis. He later
was convicted of possession
with intent to deliver
cannabis, police said.
The press release notes
plural “occupants” being investigated
though only the
arrest of Grieco. It also does
not specify what type of
narcotics Grieco allegedly
possessed inside the home,
nor a quantity for those alleged
drugs.
When contacted for further
information, Orland
Park Police Cmdr. John
Keating simply stated via
email the department would
“stand by the release” and
did not answer questions
about it.
Orland Park Police Sgt.
Ken Rosinski did not return
a call and email about the
case immediately.
About that photo on Page 8
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
Every week, it is my
responsibility to
make decisions about
our newspapers — not only
regarding The Orland Park
Prairie but also the other
six papers in our Southwest
Chicago cluster.
Sometimes, those decisions
are as easy as redirecting
an editor’s momentary
lapse of judgement with
something like, “No, of
course you should not run
that questionable headline
that adds a layer of unintended
innuendo.” And it’s easy.
Sometimes, those decisions
can be a bit more complicated,
such as the one I had to
make on Page 8 this week.
Do we run the image of
a racially insensitive scene
provided to us by the lawyer
representing the former employee
of Culver’s who said
a manager-in-training created
the scene on a counter at the
restaurant and left the display
for her to find in July?
For many media outlets,
the answer simply seemed
to be “Yes.” For one, the
answer was a “Yes,” plus
let’s even do some wordplay
when it comes to the hard C
of Culver’s and that of the
Ku Klux Klan.
But despite how the
job, in many respects, is
to acquire the truth — or
as much of it as possible
— simply share it with
the readers in a digestible
format and let them make
up their minds about what
is happening in the community
around them, we do
not have to regurgitate every
last piece of information
or image sent our way. We
must make decisions on our
content.
And sometimes that leads
to omitting things. We may
omit too many details that
simply get in the way of
someone understanding a
story. We may boil down
complex ideas into stories
the common reader can
understand. We may omit
an image, simply because
its quality is not up to our
standards or does not add
something to the text it accompanies.
Our papers also bring to
the table a sense of social,
communal responsibility.
And we try to consider, in
certain instances, whether or
not something — be it a story
or photo — may do more
harm to the community than
good. Maybe that outweighs
the public’s right to know.
And it is a fair question, in
a culture in which violence
and hatred are prevalent, to
ask whether or not insensitive
coverage of such events
only exacerbates the situations.
Does the attention
given these things guarantee
there will be more to come?
It is fair to ask, in that
context, whether or not the
photo might actually have
the ability to excite or enable
racism? Does someone see
that image and, God forbid,
find it creative or funny, despite
the suffering it caused a
22-year-old woman?
Beyond that, the photo on
Page 8 is a hurtful, hateful
thing. And for that reason,
in and of itself, we worried
about running it. Despite
Orland Park being a predominantly
white community,
we have readers of many
races, who it bothers me
to think may have opened
their mailboxes this week,
grabbed their copies of The
Orland Park Prairie and
found themselves disturbed
by such an image in their
hometown newspaper.
Those possibilities were
all of concern, but I also
worry that without the
image it is too easy for
people to write off a story
about someone claiming a
manager did something racist
— too easy to say, “How
bad could it really be?” The
lack of that image provides
readers an easy out.
The photo, on the other
hand, is crucial to showing
just how bad it really was,
and as such serves an integral
role in the package.
In these turbulent times,
there exist people who might
try to deny racism is still
prevalent our society. And yet
questions of it pervade our
presidential election cycle.
Questions of it crop up in the
shootings taking place across
the country.
This photo serves as an
indicator that racism exists,
right here in Orland Park. To
omit it would be, in my opinion,
to help cover up that
simple fact.
I know we have a reputation
as the newspaper that
prints a lot of positive news.
I am happy that we do. But
there also are things like this
occurring in Orland Park, and
it is important our readers
know about them, that they
see them unfiltered.
So rather than shy away
from the potential pain it
causes, we decided you
should be disturbed, hurt,
outraged by seeing such a
thing in your hometown
newspaper. And I will just
have to trust that you will
understand that outrage
should be over the fact that
you know this exists in your
community, not the decision
to show you it exists.
Letters to Editor
Thanks for the shade
During these hot summer
days, as I walk through our
Orland Park neighborhoods,
I am grateful to those property
owners who have shade
trees along the street. They
have invested in our community
by planting and
maintaining trees that add
beauty to our streets, increase
property values, provide
needed shade and cool
down the hot streets. Those
of us who walk, jog, walk
dogs and bicycle really do
appreciate the shady blocks.
To those of you who have
barren, unshaded stretches
along the street, please consider
planting trees there.
Even if it is a tiny sapling,
it will someday provide
beauty and cool shade, and
you will be contributing to
the future well being of Orland
Park.
Pastor Column
Mecca, the city of pilgrimage
Imam Kifah Mustapha
Prayer Center of Orland Park
Prophet Mohammad
always loved his
own city, Mecca,
because the first mosque,
Al-Kaaba, was built there
by Prophet Abraham and
his son Ishmael. Six years
after Prophet Mohammad’s
migration to the city of
Medina, he received revelation
from God commanding
all Muslims to perform
pilgrimage to Mecca.
Pilgrimage (Hajj) became
a ritual that connected Muslims
to their history and represented
an act of worship
that would become the final
pillar of the Five Pillars of
Islam (Testimony of Faith,
Prayer, Charity, Fasting and
Pilgrimage.)
Every Muslim who is
physically and financially
able to travel must perform
pilgrimage to the
city of Mecca once in his
or her lifetime. The rituals
performed during the
pilgrimage represent pivotal
moments in the history of
monotheism.
Pilgrims wear simple
white clothes representing
equality and purity, where
the prince and the pauper
are indistinguishable one
from the other. Pilgrims
walk around Al-Kaabah
praising God and retracing
the steps of Prophets
Abraham and Ishmael.
Pilgrims walk between the
two hills as Hajar, the wife
of Prophet Abraham, did
searching for water while
she and her child were
alone in the desert.
Another ritual of the
pilgrimage is to stand at
the foot of Mount Arafat in
supplication and praise to
God as the Prophet Mohammad
did. Men shave
their hair as a symbol of
purity and new beginnings.
Finally, Pilgrims throw
pebbles at a monument
erected in the same place
Prophet Abraham threw
stones at Satan, as he tried
to deceive him into disobeying
God’s command to
sacrifice his son Ishmael –
a test, in which at the final
moment God commanded
Prophet Abraham to spare
his son and slaughter
a sheep. Most pilgrims
perform this sacrifice, as
well, to slaughter a sheep
or a goat which is donated
to the poor, many of whom
may only taste meat once
a year during this annual
sacrifice.
The pilgrimage also is
a beautiful time to meet
people from around the
world. In a letter written
by Malcolm X during his
own pilgrimage, he wrote,
“Never have I witnessed
such sincere hospitality and
the overwhelming spirit
of true brotherhood as is
practiced by people of all
colors and races here in this
OPPL Con embraces pop culture characters
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
Seven-year-old Brian
Klimek had a difficult decision
to make on the morning
of Saturday, Aug. 13: Spider-Man
or Batman?
It was a tough choice for
many young boys in the area,
as the Orland Park Public Library
held OPPL Con.
“He loves superheroes,”
his mother Julie Klimek
said. “He wanted to wear his
costume.”
Having worn the Batman
costume to the library’s convention
this past year, Julie
Klimek pulled the Spiderm-
Man costume out of her
shoulder bag.
“We had Spider-Man,
too,” she said. “I wasn’t sure
which he’d want to be, so I
brought them both.”
This marked the second
year of the event but the first
under the OPPL Con name,
according to Sara Dempster,
chairperson of the event, who
was dressed as Snow White
from the Disney film “Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
community members were
invited to don costumes of
their favorite superheroes or
characters.
“It’s not just about comics,”
she said. “This year,
with OPPL Con it’s all about
popular culture characters,
too. … Last year, it was all
about superheroes.”
To further drive the theme
encompassing all characters,
library staff dressed as
various children’s television
show characters, including
Sofia from the Disney Junior
cartoon show “Sofia the
First,” Jake from the Disney
Junior cartoon show “Jake
and the Neverland Pirates”
and Princess Bubblegum
from the Cartoon Network
cartoon show “Adventure
Penelope (left) and Chris Nevell, of Orland Park, take in the
convention together.
Time.” Community children
ran to their favorite characters
to meet them and take
photos together.
“The girls want to be with
Princess Sofia the whole
time,” Elizabeth Burns said.
Jennifer Hahn and her
2-year-old daughter Lily accompanied
Burns and her
3-year-old daughter Hannah
to the event. The two girls,
wearing their Princess Sofia
dresses, were awestruck by
the Princess Sofia portrayed
by library staff.
“Lily was excited for story
time and crafts,” Hahn
said. “And especially to see
Princess Sofia. … Lily is all
about superheroes, and she’s
loving this.”
Burns added, “[Hannah]
came for Sofia — it’s her favorite
princess.”
In addition to a change in
name, the event included an
expanded assortment of activities,
Dempster said.
“The ‘Super Smash Bros.’
tournaments are new this
year, and the retro game
room,” she said. “We tried
to involve a lot of the technology,
and we have a lot of
Star Wars stuff, because Star
Wars is big again.”
She added that a board
game room and vendors
were available for adults, as
well. Other activities included
a photo area, story time,
crafts, a tattoo booth and a
costume contest.
The events were spread
throughout the library, offering
attendees a glimpse
of the various resources the
library provides.
“Our goal is to pull people
in the doors who wouldn’t
think to go to the library for
anything other than books,”
Dempster said. “We have so
much else here … and they
can see all of the other things
we have available — really
get our resources out there.”
The Dish
Customers come first at Taco Patio
Owners value place
in community,
customers’ opinions
Max Lapthorne
Contributing Editor
When customers walk
into Taco Patio in Lockport,
it is not uncommon to see
the chefs start preparing
their food before they even
order.
Many of the customers
at the 4-year-old establishment
are regulars, and it is
important to owner Christos
Giannakopoulos that all of
his customers receive a particular
level of care.
For some, that means
their orders being ready
before they even pull their
credit cards out of their wallets.
For others, it means
putting French fries on a
burrito, despite no such
item appearing on the menu.
“We don’t like any customer
to step out with any
complaint,” Giannakopoulos
said. “We learn from the
customers. If you follow
the customers, you’ll create
plates that really satisfy.”
Customers are valued
above all else at Taco Patio,
because Giannakopoulos
along with his wife and
restaurant manager, Nasia
Katris, want to become ingrained
in the community
of Lockport. Katris’ father,
Demetrios, opened the original
Taco Patio decades ago
as an alternative to the hot
dog joints that dominated in
the 1970s.
In the four-plus years the
restaurant has been open,
Nasia Katris said she thinks
the residents have welcomed
them and have been open to
sharing their thoughts about
menu items to help improve
the restaurant.
“The beautiful thing
The Nacho Supreme has been one of the most popular
items on the Taco Patio menu since its opening in
Lockport. Max Lapthorne/22nd Century Media
about Lockport is that it’s
a family community,” she
said. “It’s a family community,
and we’re accepted and
we feel loved by the community.
It’s nice. They really
want us to succeed, and
they’ll tell us that.”
One of the items that has
been a hit from the start
for Taco Patio has been the
Nacho Supreme ($5.49 for
ground beef, $6.49 for steak
or chicken). The dish comes
blanketed in cheese, choice
of meat, beans, sour cream
and guacamole, with tomatoes,
green onions and black
olives sprinkled throughout.
Several months after
opening, Taco Patio ventured
into catering, as it
served food for a local
school’s teacher-appreciation
event, and catering has
been a large part of the business
ever since.
“We got into the catering
business because it’s fun,”
Giannakopoulos said. “The
most amazing thing is that
someone for a special event.
... They trust us to provide
the food, which is important
for a party.”
When a catering order
comes in, Giannakopoulos
and Katris often will be the
ones helping the customer
place an appropriately-sized
order, and will even deliver
the food themselves to
make sure everything turns
out right.
“We still give a very personal
touch to it,” Katris
said.
Taco Patio puts its money
where its mouth is when it
comes to giving back to the
local community, as it helps
local youth sports teams
looking for sponsorships
and local charities. Gianna-
stream of something.
And this relates to hair
how? I’ll explain.
It’s a boy thing. I’m a
hockey mom. I have been
dealing with this notion of
flow for years.
Let’s call it hockey hair
— long, shaggy, often wet
out of a helmet, messy
hair. They call it flow in
the locker room. If you
walk into Arctic Ice Arena,
you will get my drift. Not
exactly the McDreamy
kind — I’m talking long,
uncombed, messy mop-thefloor
hair.
My boys have flow, now
12 and 19, they are rather
concerned about grooming
the flow (Thank goodness).
They actually care that the
flow is flowing properly
and looking good. There’s
a technique to flow, which
means “Hands off, Mom.”
I try. But I typically “do
it wrong.” I usually manage
to sweet talk them into a
good haircut when school
ends and summer begins.
That’s long gone, and
hockey season is around
the corner. The flow is
back and the crew is in the
house.
The opinions of this column
are that of the writer. They do
not necessarily reflect those of
kopoulos and Katris make it
a point to give back to local
organizations, because they
said they both want to do as
much as they can for their
customers.
“When you think about
[Taco Patio’s] existence,
[it’s] based on the customers,”
Giannakopoulos said.
“So, we try to give back as
much as we can.”
Several new dessert options
are to be added to the
menu soon, and Katris said
she hopes to add a patio to
the restaurant by next spring
to live up to the restaurant’s
name. But any changes
made to the menu or the
restaurant itself will always
be done with the customer
in mind, they added.
“We’ve tried to invest and
make it as beautiful as we
can,” Giannakopoulos said.
“We want to stay in the
neighborhood. We want to
be part of the community.”
A dessert with no name
For customers with a
sweet tooth, Taco Patio offers
a No Name dessert
($2.85) that is fried dough
served with cinnamon,
powdered sugar and Mexican
caramel sauce.
Why did you start
playing tennis?
I started playing tennis
when I was around 8. So,
I’ve been playing for seven
always looking for me to
do a competitive sport, so
we tried a lot ... but I didn’t
really like any of them. ...
One day, on vacation, my
dad was playing badminton
with me, and I was really
good at it. He wanted
me to do something more
fast-paced, so he took me
to Wimbledon Tennis Club
at Palos Courts, which is 10
minutes away from where I
live. ... From then on, I’ve
just been hooked.
What do you like most
about tennis?
I really like how I can only
rely on myself in singles. I
don’t have to worry about
anyone else. It’s really nice
to be independent.
What do you think is
the most challenging
part of playing tennis?
For me, personally, that’d
have to be just on court,
mentally, being there the
whole time. So, not getting
mad at myself, remembering
that losing a point is no
big deal — just the mental
aspect of it.
What do you think is
your best quality in
tennis?
I’d have to say my ability
to dig out the really tough
points, especially if it’s a really
close match, just being
able to stay in the match.
What did you work
on most during the
offseason?
I really worked on — especially
with my singles
game, because we had some
really tough matches last
season with Lockport and
Homewood-Flossmoor —
... my physicality, getting
stronger, getting a lot faster
on the court, so that will help
me, especially in those tough
matches.
Do you have a personal
motto?
Usually, I just say to myself,
“No matter what, you
can always come back.
It’s never over. Even when
you’re down match points,
the match is never over.”
What is your favorite
post-match meal?
Usually, after matches,
after the whole tournament
is over, I’ll go and get a Big
Mac with fries.
If you could be any
famous athlete for a
day, who would it be?
Serena Williams. On the
court, how she plays, it’s
pretty amazing to watch.
Then, off the court, she’s
got this great attitude; she’s
funny. I just think she’s an
all-around amazing athlete.
She’s a great person, too.
If you could hang out
22nd Century Media File Photo
with any celebrity for a
day, who would it be?
Probably Leslie Jones
from “Ghostbusters,” because
she’s hilarious.
What songs do you
listen to before a
match?
I listen to “Heathens” by
twenty one pilots, because
that’s what me and my doubles
partner always listen
to before matches. Then, I
also listen to “Cold Water”
by Major Lazer and Justin
Bieber.
Girls Volleyball
Eagles reloading squad for 2016 season
Anna Jonynas to
anchor team as
returning outside
hitter
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
There is an old saying
among sports teams: “We
don’t rebuild; we reload.”
For more than a decade
the Sandburg girls volleyball
team has reloaded. This season,
the Eagles might have
to rebuild.
There is still plenty of talent
on tap for the Eagles,
but there will be a bevy of
young players on this season’s
team, and the key will
be how well they mesh together.
“We are going to be
young, to say the least,”
Sandburg coach David Vales
said. “We will only have a
few seniors.”
One of those seniors, however,
is a huge piece to the
Eagles’ puzzle. That is senior
outside hitter Anna Jonynas.
She is the only returning
starter back from this past
season’s squad, which went
30-8 and won a regional title
for the 12th straight season.
She also was the team’s kill
leader this past season.
“She was our kill leader,
and her defense was good
last year, but she has improved,”
Vales said of Jonynas.
“She’s also been working
on her serve. She’s a
little undersized but makes
up for it by working hard.
“As a whole, we’re not going
to be looking down on
many teams. We’re not as tall
as we have been in the past.”
A trio of juniors with experience
from this past season
also are back. They are
middle hitter Madison Hart,
Maureen “Mo” Imrie —
who dished out 150 assists
in a backup role as setter this
past year, and outside hitter
Abigail Stefanon.
“Madison Hart had a
good club season, and we
expect some more offense
from her,” Vales said. “Mo
Imrie brings things a little
full circle for me. Her older
sister MaryKate Imrie was
a sophomore setter on my
first team. Mo is used to the
speed of the varsity game
and will only get better.
“And Abigail Stefanon
was our third outside hitter
last season. But when she
gets the speed of the game
worked out, she’ll do well.
She’s got big shoes to fill.”
A pair of newcomers will
be big contributors to the
Sandburg defense. They are
freshman libero Rachel Krasowski
and junior libero/
defensive specialist Lauren
Gausselin.
“Rachel played up with
us on the varsity as a freshman
over the summer,”
Vales said. “She’ll make that
jump and try to anchor the
defense. Lauren anticipates
well and will do a good job
getting the ball back up to
our setter.”
Sandburg did something
it had not in previous years
at the Palos Courts Summer
League, enter two teams.
While both of them lost in the
semifinals of the playoffs, that
still showed the potential if
they combined the two teams.
There is a new look for
the SouthWest Suburban
Conference, as three schools
have left the league. The
Eagles have won the SWSC
Blue Division title for seven
straight seasons but know
doing so this season will be a
real challenge. Lincoln-Way
players that were at the nowclosed
Lincoln-Way North,
won the Palos Courts summer
league title and are a big
favorite to win the league
title this season.
But the Eagles, who had
26 girls try out for the varsity
team this past week, will
certainly show up and be in
the mix. They hope to peak
at the end of the season.
“For the past three years
in a row we’ve had a good
senior class graduate and a
good junior class to step up
and take their place,” said
Vales, whose teams have
won 29 or more matches in
eight of his nine seasons.
“This year we’ll be younger,
but doesn’t mean we will be
any worse. We just have to
work harder every day and
get better. The girls are looking
at the sectional frame
and being better by then.”
Golf
From Page 46
was on the varsity squad for
three years; and Kelly Golden,
it will be no easy task for
the 2016 girls golf team to
live up to the high bar that
has been set in recent years.
“We’ve had a great run,”
Allen said. “We’ve made
it downstate the past three
years. We finished sixth last
year; we finished fifth the
year before that. We’ve won
the conference three years in
a row. We’ve won the regional
three years in a row. We’ve
been undefeated in dual
matches the last two years.
“We’ve just had a great
group of girls who have done
a great job. We just try to keep
it going. Obviously, losing
some of those seniors will
be tough, but hopefully with
some of those returning girls
we’ll be able to keep it going.”
Despite the high standard
and the graduation of previous
standouts, McGiles said
she is confident in the team’s
chances in 2016.
“Even though we lost a
couple of our seniors, I think
this team has a ton of potential.”
McGiles, who is entering
her fourth year as a varsity
golfer, has seen firsthand the
success of Sandburg’s girls
golf team, and she wants to
be a part of extending that
success.
“I want to be able to continue
that into my senior
year, in dual matches, invites
and into the postseason,” she
said.
McGiles is no stranger to
individual success, either.
She was a medalist at last
year’s regional championship,
firing a 68.
“A goal of mine is to [be
a medalist] again, and even
do that at sectional,” McGiles
said. “Then, when state
comes around, [I want] to be
in the Top 10 or better.”
Even with all the success
Sandburg has had in the last
three years, Allen said he
would rather not make his
2016 goals too lofty.
“We’ll look at what our
team looks like and try to set
some attainable goals,” he
said. “I kind of leave [setting
goals] up to the girls. We’ll
do it together, but a lot of the
input comes from the girls.”
One expectation Allen
said he felt comfortable setting
was making it to the
state tournament, but he acknowledged
there are many
good teams in the conference
and in the area.
“In conference, Lockport
will be tough,” Allen said.
“On the other side of the conference,
Lincoln-Way Central
is going to be very good.
“Golf around the Chicagoland
area is fantastic.
There’s a lot of quality players,
so it’s always a challenge.
That’s why we don’t
take it for granted that we’ve
been able to make it downstate
and finish as high as
we have the last three years,
because we realize how difficult
that is.”
Allen and his team will
have a tough start to the season.
They are slated to have
several away matches this
week, including an earlyseason
test against Lincoln-
Way Central Tuesday, Aug.
23, at The Sanctuary Golf
Course in New Lenox.
But regardless of results
early in the season and into
the postseason, Allen knows
it will be a fun year for the
Sandburg girls golf team.
“It’s always a fun, great
group of girls to work with,”
he said. “I’m looking forward
to the season, and I’m
excited about the group we
have coming back.”
With five returning varsity
players, the Sandburg High
School girls golf team has
its sights set on another fine
season.
Tryouts for the team took
place Aug. 10 at Silver Lake
Country Club’s nine-hole
Rolling Hills Executive
Course. Based on what he
saw there, varsity head coach
Todd Allen will have plenty
of talent to work with for the
upcoming season.
“Nice turnout this year —
25 girls,” Allen said. “I’m
encouraged by that.”
While Allen said most
of the girls who tried out
will have a place either on
the varsity or junior varsity
teams, two girls in particular
will be important to the 2016
season.
“We have Emilyee Mc-
Giles, who is a senior who
committed to playing at
Southern Illinois,” Allen
said. “She’s obviously our
leader coming back.”
There also is an up-andcomer
in whom Allen and
the Eagles have a lot of faith
moving forward. Sophomore
Hannah Kilbane is returning
to the squad after having the
team’s best individual finish
at state as a freshman this
past season.
Boys Soccer
Three goalkeepers competing for starting role this season
Eagles have high
expectation for this
season’s squad
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
When it comes to boys
soccer, few programs in
the state can boast the success
and consistency that
Sandburg has enjoyed. And
despite graduating a bevy
of players from this past
season’s sectional semifinal
squad, the Eagles should still
be a force with which to be
reckoned in 2016.
After losing in the postseason
in 2015 to Consolidated
High School District
230 rival Andrew, the Eagles
are to return just seven players
from this past year’s roster.
Chief among those returners,
however, are skilled
midfielders Marty Manzke
and Dan Rohder.
“This is the fourth year
Marty has been on our team,
so we’re expecting big
things out of him,” Sandburg
coach Desi Vuillaume said.
“His whole family has been
part of the boys program and
girls program for the last
eight years. They know what
it takes.
“Rohder has some big
shoes to fill, with both of his
brothers being in the program
in the past. He’s always
been an excellent player, and
he’s really matured a lot over
the last nine months. We’re
expecting huge things out of
him, as well, this year.”
Vuillaume said he was not
“I’m dying. It’s so hot. Had to park at 31st lot and take a
shuttle. I’m the only girl photog on field.”
Heather Warthen – former Orland Park Prairie editor, on the long and sweaty road
to Solider Field (as relayed via text to Editor Bill Jones)
set on where Manzke or Rohder
would play this season.
“We might have a few new
ideas for those two,” he said.
Ryan Frencl, a senior, is the
lone returning defensive player
for the Eagles this season.
“I’m expecting big things
out of Ryan this year to lead
us back there, as we will
have three new guys [on defense],”
Vuillaume said.
One of those newcomers
will be sophomore Julian
Hernandez.
“He’s new to our program
but not new to our school,”
Vuillaume said. “He played
football last year. He decided
to come back to soccer.”
At forward, Colin Kroll
sophomore can be a player
to watch, Vuillaume said.
“He’s also had two brothers
come through the program
and is extremely
skilled,” he said. “He’s very
similar to Dan Rohder in
terms of ability and skill.”
At the goalkeeper position,
Vuillaume said it was too
early to project a starter or
what the rotation might be, as
Sandburg has three studentathletes
who can fill the role.
“We always give everyone
an equal shot, and we have
[three] really good keepers,”
Vuillaume said. “We’re
blessed to have a lot of keepers
in our program right now.”
Returning from last year
is senior Derek McCurdy.
He is joined by senior Noah
Mitchell, who was on junior
varsity this past season, as
well as newcomer Daniel
Porter — a transfer from
Providence Catholic.
What 2 Watch
That kind of program depth
— as well as students knowing
what to expect prior to the
season — is what makes the
Eagles a team seemingly always
on the rise.
“We have a philosophy
that we’ve had for 30 years at
Sandburg on how we like our
athletes to play,” Vuillaume
said. “The nice thing about
it is that they all know what
those expectations are and
what that philosophy is before
they ever get out to my
field. It makes my job easier.
“And the talent level of the
kids who come to our school
is just awesome. My job is just
to make sure they all get along
Denver Broncos – 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20
• Yes, we know this is still Bears town, but
the next chance to see Orland Park native
Michael Schofield play is against the San
Francisco 49s.
and we all stay focused.”
Sandburg is scheduled
to start its season at Lemont
Monday, Aug. 22, with
a 4:45 p.m. start time. Two
days later, the Eagles are
to play at Maine South at 7
p.m. After that, the Eagles
are involved in games at
the Best of the West Tournament,
with games against
Plainfield North, Naperville
Central and Bartlett.
All-in-all, it is a tough early-season
schedule for the
Orland Park squad.
hardest competition at the beginning
of the year, so we see
what we have and what we
said. “You look at that
Best of the West Tournament,
and the last 30 years one of
the teams that will come in
the Top 4 in the state is going
to be in that tournament. It
gives us a great look at where
we need to be, where the bar
is in the state, and what we
need to work toward.”
He said the team will be
young this season, which
could lead to some early
growing pains.
“But we’re also a very
skilled team, and we have
great footwork, so we
feel we’ll pick it up pretty
quick,” he said.
