Part 3
Vehicle
Using
Controls
#1
Clutch
#1
Clutch
Keep your
foot/hand clear of
the clutch unless
changing gears or
stopping
6
Demonstrate
your ability
to use the
clutch properly
1
Don't slip the
clutch
2
When you lift the
clutch too quickly
the car may stall or
wheel spin. That is
slipping the clutch.
Disengage the clutch
completely just before
the vehicle is brought to
a complete standstill,
without labouring or
stalling the engine
7
Don't coast with
the clutch fully
depressed
(down) or car in
neutral
5
Use the clutch
in a smooth
and
coordinated
manner
4
Don't ride the
clutch
3
When you 'hold' the
clutch between being
fully depressed and
fully released. You
create a 'rocking'
motion with
the vehicle
#2
Gears
#2
Gears
Demonstrate
your ability to
change gears
smoothly
1
Blind spots include
looking over your
right shoulder and
out the back
passenger window
Don’t use the
gears to slow the
vehicle down; use
the brakes
Check in the
mirrors before
changing
gears
6 2
Change gears
when travelling
straight, not
while turning a
corner
5
Keep your
eyes on the
road while
changing
gears
4
Select the
correct gear
the first time
3
#3
Mirrors
#3
Mirrors
Don’t forget to
check blind spots
that your mirrors
do not see
6
Use all the mirrors
to ensure that it is safe
behind you before
executing a manoeuvre,
or changing speed
or direction
1
Adjust the
mirrors only
while the vehicle
is stationery
2
Check the mirrors
long enough to
determine what is
happeningand to
the left and the
right
5
Check the mirrors
long enough to
determine what is
happening behind
you.
4
Check in the
mirrors every 58
seconds and as
you approach a
hazard
3
#4
Hand
Brake
#4
Hand
Brake
Applied whenever the
vehicle is stationery for
any length of time
1
Applied with the
ratchet release button
depressed in order to
protect the ratchet
from damage or
unnecessary wear
3 2
Applied when there
is a possibility of
rolling backwards
or forwards e.g.
stop street on
inclined road
#5
Hooter
1
#5
Hooter
Before sounding the
hooter, check the mirrors
for safety
Replace your hand on
the steering wheel
after using the hooter
3
Sound the hooter
only when
necessary, in good
time, and only for
as long as is
necessary
2
#6
Indicators
#6
Indicators
Always indicate your
intention to change
direction
1
Indicate long enough
before turning so that
others can react if
necessary
5
Before indicating
check both mirrors
and blind spots to
ensure that it is
safe behind you
2
Ensure that the
indicator is
cancelled after a
manoeuvre
Replace your hand
on the steering
wheel after
signaling
4 3
#7
Hand
Signals
#7
Hand
Signals
Execute proper hand
signals to indicate a left
and a right turn, and to
slow down or stop
Only two attempts
will be allowed
1
Replace your hand in
the correct position on
the steering wheel
before braking, turning,
slowing down or
stopping
Indicators must be
activated before
giving any hand
signal
2
5
Extend your right
arm out of the window
and signal in the
manner that you wish
to turn left or right,
slow down or stop
Check the mirrors
and applicable
blind spots
beforehand
signalling
4 3
Extend your arm
outside
of the window &
place your hand
straight
up to signal
STOP
Extend your arm
straight
out
the window to
indicate turning
RIGHT
Up and down
indicates slow
down
Face your hand
down and moving
in an antclockwise
direction to
indicate turning
LEFT
#8
Steering
#8
Steering
Don’t turn the steering
wheel while the vehicle
is stationery.
Countersteer when
necessary
6
Demonstrate your
ability to steer the
vehicle on a proper
course without creating
a dangerous
situation
1
Drive with both
hands on the
wheel in a
tentotwo or
quartertothree
position
2
Use the ‘pushpull’
method for turning the
steering wheel and to
steer smoothly
5
Avoid cutting corners
or turning too wide.
Don’t wander across
or straddle lanes
4
Keep both
3
hands
on the steering
wheel except when
indicating,
changing gear, or
operating a control
or switch
