HEALTHY PACIFIC FUTURES THROUGH COMMUNITY
PARTNERSHIP
Kia Ora, Talofa Lava, Kia Orana, Malo e Lelei, Fakaalofa Lahi Atu,
Taloha Ni and Warm Pacific Greetings
CMDHB’s vision is to work in partnership with our communities to
improve the health status of all, with particular emphasis on Maori,
Pacific peoples and other communities with health disparities.
LotuMoui is a flagship programme for CMDHB in working towards
achieving this vision. We acknowledge the importance of spiritual
health in Pacific people’s worldview. The strong links between physical,
mental, spiritual and socio-economic wellbeing is part of life for Pacific
people but is increasingly being supported by health research and
evidence.
We believe good health and wellbeing is a key to prosperity for Pacific people. By continuing to
improve our responsiveness and your access to health services, we believe our community’s aspirations
to fulfil their potential through good health and wellbeing can be achieved. Your contribution through
LotuMoui helps us by providing us with a way of communicating and sharing information on what we
do. What is also important for us at CMDHB is how we work with the collective power of Pacific peoples.
We challenge you to use this collective power to make change happen for the benefit of our future
generations of Pacific people in this District.
I welcome and wish you well on this second LotuMoui Symposium. The strong response we received
from Pacific communities two years ago, when we launched LotuMoui, told us that you were ready to
make health a priority.
This year we look forward to sharing with you visions of what healthy futures can look like for Pacific
communities. More importantly, we hope this Symposium will arm LotuMoui and the wider Pacific
church community with the tools necessary to turn those plans into action.
I wish you well in your Symposium and thank you for your support of CMDHB’s work.
Mr Pat Snedden
Chair, Counties Manukau District Health Board

Greetings from the Pacific Health Advisory
Committee (PHAC)
HEALTHY FUTURES THE PACIFIC WAY
We have been an important part of the South Auckland community for
more than three decades since the early settlement of our people in
the 1960s – 1970s. We once enjoyed good health, full employment and
active participation in our wider communities. Although the poor socioeconomic
status of our communities is what we are known for in the
wider world, this Symposium is about sharing among ourselves – not only
a bright and exciting healthy vision of our future – but also how we work
together to achieve that vision.
We encourage you to take these two days out and dream with us a
future where our children fulfil their potential, young people continue to
achieve and strive for the best, our families support each other and our
community provides a safe, protective and healthy environment to
nurture our future talent.
Our first LotuMoui Symposium demonstrated how important our health and wellbeing are to Pacific
communities and established a partnership for the DHB and Pacific communities to work together. This
second Symposium is about how we go from strength to strength and build on that partnership and
turn our visions into action – we will do this the Pacific way.
What is the Pacific way? We will do this together – there is collective power in our family, church, friends
and ethnic groupings. We will grow a healthy future for all of us together. We will also do this with
respect and acknowledgement of our history as a migrant community. We will see our cultural roots as
an important part of our strength and foundation to look and move us forward.
The Pacific Health Advisory Committee wishes the Pacific community well for our work at the
Symposium and, importantly, looks forward to working together to create healthier futures for all of us.
HEALTHY FUTURES FOR PACIFIC PEOPLES
On behalf of the CMDHB, welcome to our second LotuMoui Symposium!
We are pleased to be able to bring to you an exciting and inspirational
line up of keynote speakers and workshop themes. We are especially
pleased to bring to you a focus on young people through a stream of
workshops that will run parallel to the main Symposium.
LotuMoui is an important programme to help us realise the vision of
Healthy Futures for all our communities – in particular, Pacific people
living in our District. LotuMoui looks forward to the next phase of
expansion where, as part of our strategic objectives, we aim to:
• Increase the number of churches involved in LotuMoui from 50 to 80
within the next 3 years; and
• Implement the LotuMoui Operational Plan that contains important objectives about improving the
lifestyles and health of Pacific people.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the many people who helped us put this programme together
and in particular our Minister Steering Committee:
• Reverend Setaita Veikune
• Pastor Paora Teaukura
• Reverend William Hakaoro
• Pastor Tiatia Peseta
• Reverend Mosese Ueleni
• Reverend Maua Sola
We would not have been able to put together such an exciting programme were it not for your ideas,
time and effort to make this a success.
I wish you well for your work at the Symposium and look forward to the visions and sharing that will
emerge.
Symposium Themes
The branding of the Symposium has been “LotuMoui, Mind, Body, Spirit”.‘Lotu’ means Church or Prayer
in most Pacific languages, while ‘Moui’ is a Tongan and Niuean phrase which means good health that
encompasses mind, body and soul.
The words ‘mind, body, spirit’ relate to a holistic and all inclusive approach to health, which does not
separate the emotional, physical, mental or spiritual aspects of wellness.
Key theme for the Symposium:
Healthier Lifestyles: Preparing for the next generation of Pacific peoples
We Reap What We Sow Galatians 6:8
Founding Scripture
LotuMoui Vision
A vision of prosperity: ‘to have a good safe journey’ that holistically encompasses physical health,
material wealth, emotional security, spiritual wholeness and the wellbeing of families and the
community.
Workshop Topics:
There will be a number of workshops held during the Symposium which aim to:
• Disseminate information back to Symposium delegates about key health issues;
• Identify the needs of different organisations, congregations; and,
• Generate discussions about potential solutions to health issues.
Breakout Session One:
Ethnic Specific Forum
Wednesday 22nd November, 1.00 pm – 2.30 pm
The ethnic-specific forum will provide delegates with an opportunity to breakout into their ethnicgroups
and discuss issues around lifestyle choices within their cultural contexts.
Topic for Discussion:
What actions will our community need to take to ensure healthier lifestyles for the next generation?
Consider:
• Integrating “spiritual”,“mental” and “physical” health care practices to help charter a new health
direction for our future generation;
