2 THE BUGLE FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2016 Popular King Pastor, Poet Charlie Lagan and wife to retire to Cape Town Continued from Front Page... This was both brave and dangerous as he and David Russell faced harassment, arrest and detention without trial by the State Security agents. Charlie left the priesthood to marry Sheila. They had four children: Mark, Ursula, Leigh and Catherine. His daughters attended KHS and his son went to Dale. Charlie took up a post at Fort Hare University in the Department of English in 1977 in Alice. In 1989 the family moved to King Williams Town and they worshipped at Holy Trinity Anglican church where Charlie was Assistant Priest for some years and then he became Rector some years later until he retired 3 years ago. His wife took up a position at Standard Bank and retired recently. Charlie was also a member of the King Rotary Club for a short while and got to know some great people. Charlie is a renowned poet. A member of the Ecca Poets (a group initially based at Fort Hare) who produce an annual poetry book of their work and hold public readings. He has also published many solo anthologies such as A lark in the labyrinth and Sandbird. He is still writing. His favorite tipple is any Irish whiskey taken for medicinal purposes as it is “Good for your problem”. In his spare time Charlie plays the blues harmonica when 'allowed'. In his day he was a marathon runner and completed a number of Comrades and 2 Ocean runs and for sheer insanity, The Washie. He did it 'because it was there' ... he commented on the 100 mile event. Charlie and Sheila are very sad to be leaving their good friends and their lovely town, and have spent 27 very happy years in King Williams Town. Kingspark residents BEEF Beef Stew / Shin.............................................R 43.95 p/kg MUTTON ½ Mutton (±7kg)...........................................R500.00 each LAMB ½ Lamb(±7kg)..............................................R600.00 each PORK Shoulder Chops / Cutlets...............................R 39.95 p/kg Leg Roast.......................................................R 39.95 p/kg VENISON Kudu Wors......................................................R 45.95 p/kg Venison Mince................................................R 29.95 p/kg Venison Patties..............................................R 39.95 p/kg Biltong - R175.00/kg Dry Wors - R145.00/kg Chilli Bites - R195.00/kg Spicy Rice and Chicken Strips Ingredients 1 cup uncooked rice 2½ cups shredded chicken breast (I used a Rotisserie Chicken) 1 cup mixed frozen vegetables 1 onion, chopped 1 tablespoon butter Fresh lemon for serving 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped Butter Sauce 4 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon lemon juice ½ teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon Cayenne Pepper 1 tablespoon soy sauce A little salt and pepper Method Cook the rice In the mean time, fry the onion in the butter and steam the frozen veggies until cooked (you could also just microwave them for 2 minutes) Drain the rice once cooked and add the onion and vegetables. Mix through. Shred the chicken breast and add to the rice. To make the sauce, add all the ingredients to a microwaveable bowl or cup and heat for 1 minute or until the butter has melted. Stir well and pour all over the rice and mix through. Sprinkle parsley over and serve with slices of lemon and a fresh green salad
FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 2016 THE BUGLE 3 Lions make 'Lion snugglers' at the Metlife Mall 'WHAT are you making?' was the question asked by curious passers-by and may have been the question on your mind had you seen the KWT Lions hard at work at the Metlife Mall last Saturday. Man-sized plastic sleeves, piles of newspaper and tape were being used to create “Lions Snugglers”, warm, weather-proof and inexpensive sleeping bags to provide comfort to those who are forced to brave the elements sleeping at night on our streets. The exercise on Saturday was essentially to introduce the public to the KWT Lions latest project, one that started in George but has taken the country by storm. The plastic sleeves are specially made for and sold to the Lions and the newspaper is donated and the Lions and their helpers willingly give of their time and energy to put the Snugglers together. Lions Lady Renate SNUGGLE IN: Lions president Ulrich Hagens tries a 'Lions Snuggler' out for size at the Metlife Mall at the weekend von Abo learnt the skill when some of the KWT Lions joined with the members of their Grahamstown Club Branch recently in Grahamstown and she quickly taught others in the Club what had to be done. “As much as possible, Lions prefer ‘hands-on’ projects,” Lion President Ulrich Hagens explained. “Our service enables us to get involved, doing things for the community, and not merely giving monetary donations. 'If we can physically do something to improve the lives of those in need, it makes them happy and it makes us happy, too,” Hagens proudly said. This will be an ongoing project of the Lions, as and when materials are available. The Ultimate VIP The Pope has just finished a tour of the Napa Valley and is taking a limousine to San Francisco. Having never driven a limo, he asks the chauffeur if he can drive for a while. Since the chauffeur really doesn't have much of a choice, he climbs in the back of the limo and the Pope takes the wheel. The Pope proceeds down Silverado, and starts accelerating to see what the limo can do. He gets to about 90 MPH, and suddenly he sees the red and blue lights of the highway patrol in his mirror. He pulls over and the trooper comes to his window. The trooper, seeing who it is, says, 'Just a moment please, I need to call in.' The trooper calls in and asks for the chief. He tells the chief that he's got a REALLY important person pulled over, and asks how he should handle it. 'It's not Ted Kennedy again is it?' asks the chief. 'No Sir!' replies the trooper, 'This guy's more important.' 'Is it the Governor?' asks the chief. 'No! Even more important!' replies the trooper. 'Is it the PRESIDENT??? asks the chief. 'No! Even more important!' replies the trooper. 'Well WHO THE HECK is it?' screams the chief. 'I don't know Sir.' replies the trooper, 'but he's got the Pope as his chauffeur.'
