the DANDY LION project

the DANDY LION project University of Brighton Galleries B – Edward Street 154-155 Edward Street, Brighton, BN2 0JG Date: 1-30 Oct 2016 Open: Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm FREE Curated by Shantrelle P. Lewis The Dandy Lion Project explores global expressions of the Black Dandy phenomenon against the backdrop of contemporary life. The exhibition presents more than 150 images from over thirty photographers and is curated from an international open call by US curator, Shantrelle P. Lewis. The first comprehensive exhibition of its kind, this project highlights young men in cityscapes, defying stereotypical and monolithic understandings of black male identity, by adopting Edwardian-era fashion and fusing this with traditional African sartorial sensibilities. Following acclaimed showings at Museum of Contemporary Photography – Chicago and Museum of African Diaspora – San Francisco, this European premiere of The Dandy Lion Project also includes a digital element featuring vintage family and archive images from a special call–out and, for the first time, include photographs of women dandies in black communities throughout the world. Images from the project are also displayed in shop windows throughout central Brighton, see map for Dandy Lion Project Trail locations. Exhibiting photographers include: Hanif Abdur-Rahim, Jody Ake, Abdul Aziz, Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, Li Bo in collaboration with Delores, Rose Callahan, Kia Chenelle, Omar Victor Diop, Shawn Escoffery, Adama Delphine Fawundu, Russell K.
