thinking about Christmas yet, we have now opened entries for
our Christmas Card creative competition. Every year we send out
thousands of Christmas cards and this year we would like your
primary aged child to create it! One lucky entry will be selected
from across School Publishing's Primary Times magazines to win
this competition and details of how to enter can be found on
page 12. Good luck.
Stagecoach commits
to Creating Courage
among students
Today we’re building a new
Stagecoach, reflecting the changing
attitudes of modern parents whose
focus is more about equipping their
children with essential life skills which
can be attained from the Performing
Arts. As a leading body in the
performing arts we will nurture and
inspire every child who joins us.
For nearly 30 years Stagecoach has helped millions of students explore their creativity
through performing arts. We are committed to reinforcing ‘creative courage’ in
exploring the creativity and free expression all children have, through singing, dancing
and acting classes. Stagecoach have also refreshed with a vibrant new logo to promote
this ethos.
Our philosophy has altered with the recognition that the arts are becoming increasingly
essential in the development of well-rounded, sociable individuals and how much a
confident personality can help students gain advantage in their future prospects.
Singing, dancing and acting are fantastic hobbies for children to enjoy. Students who
may be a little quiet at first gain confidence as they get to know fellow pupils and get
involved with routines and performing and they see there is nothing to fear by expressing
themselves. Stagecoach help students to become aware of how they can best help
themselves develop further in their presentation skills as people, not just as performers.
Students performing
at the Theatre:
We teach students how to be the
best they can be on stage and in
every platform of life!
At Helen O’Grady, we teach students everything
they say is valid and important. We do this is by
re-creating everyday situations in class. Students
then have the opportunity to express their ideas, with
no-one judging them but instead everyone working
as a team, giving them a sense of group responsibility
to help one another in the lesson, and then also in the
outside world.
We also have our students perform in the Theatre
once a year combining the educational skills we teach
in our classes with performance skills, working at each
child’s own unique pace. Call on 0208 360 4020
Back to school fundraising fun
Easy ideas to inspire schools – and change deaf children’s lives.
Our fundraising activities are a great way for children to have fun while learning some
simple sign language.
• Fingerspellathon – children learn the British Sign Language alphabet and get
sponsored to take part in a fun fingerspelling challenge.
• Signed Songs – a fantastic way to learn favourite songs in British Sign Language and
make any performance or concert deaf-friendly.
• Big Cake Bake – why not hold a cake sale and learn the signs for cake, chocolate and
the prices?
As the leading charity for deaf children, we are here to make sure that every deaf
child thrives. There are more than 45,000 deaf children in the UK and without support,
many struggle at school, lack confidence and are vulnerable to bullying and abuse.
Basic deaf awareness can make a huge difference to a deaf child being included in
and out of the classroom. We have lesson plans, resources and advice on how to include
deaf children and make fundraising events deaf-friendly.
This term, make it your mission to change deaf children’s lives.
Hampstead School
“An exceptional climate for learning”
Ask anyone in West Hampstead associated with Hampstead School and
they will tell you about our remarkable progress.
We have a strong reputation locally, within London and on the basis
of outstanding practice we are involved in a number of national and
international improvement projects.
High expectations underpinned by quality of relationships lie at the heart
of our school with students’ “pride in their school being evident”. (Good
Schools Guide). Our core belief is that every single child can and will
achieve, whatever it takes, no excuses. That means high quality teaching
and strong discipline supported by pastoral care and guidance ensuring a
nurturing environment for your child.
There is no room for complacency – children only get one chance
and only the very best of the best will do.
GET THE NEW
SCHOOL YEAR
OFF TO A
SMART START
WITH KUMON
As the summer holidays roll on,
attention will soon inevitably
turn towards the start of the
new school year. Whereas thoughts
may be focused on ensuring children
have a new, crisp, school uniform and a
restocked pencil case, it is just as important
to ensure your child is equipped with the most vital tools needed for a
successful year ahead; a good grip on the core subjects of maths and
English and the learning skills required for academic progression.
Having long breaks from study means children can sometimes require
extra support to get back into the routine of daily study. Kumon
can help your child to start their new school year motivated and
confident, and ensure they gain maximum benefit from the year
of learning ahead.
Kumon Educational is the UK’s largest supplementary education
provider, with over 68,000 students studying at more than 640 study
centres, with additional centres located in a variety of countries all
over the world.
The new school year is an ideal time to enrol your child at your local
Kumon centre, to ensure they gain maximum benefit from the year of
learning ahead. For more information, contact one of the established
centres on the telephone number quoted on our advert (page 15).
This autumn at Little Angel Theatre enjoy
Emily Rising, a brand new story perfect for
children and young people aged 7 and up.
Emily wakes up one bright autumn morning to find that her feet can’t touch the ground,
and no one can understand why. To everyone’s surprise
Emily keeps rising higher and higher. From sleeping
upside-down on her ceiling and flying above her school
playground, to soaring over a starry-skied London, Emily’s
adventure is just beginning. Emily discovers a world that
looks completely different.
Emily Rising runs from 10 September until 20 November.
Find out more and book your tickets at
a horse has his horseshoes made? Head along to Countryside Live
Finchley Music School Was Established
Nearly 10 Years Ago And Many Hundreds Of
Pupils From The Area Have Benefited From
The Tuition They Provide.
They specialise in group music tuition of piano, guitar and vocals. As
Finchley Music School founder, Chris McGinity explains, “Children
are very used to learning in groups. They do it all day at school, and
may well have other lessons outside school where the tuition is also
in groups, anything from dance or drama to ski-ing. The approach
works well when the teachers have had proper training, something
that all the teachers at Finchley Music School have had.
FOCUS ON SCHOOLS
Broomfield School’s Transition Guide for Parents
If your child is aged 9 or over it is likely that
you are already starting to think about
the next steps in their education and
moving from primary school to the right
secondary school for them. A 2015 study
by UCL highlighted the top concerns for
parents when thinking about the transition
to secondary.
● The quality of teaching
● Bullying and safety
● Homework
● Making friends
At Broomfield we are very aware of these
concerns and work with pupils, parents
and primary schools to ensure that our new
pupils joining us in September do so with
confidence and quickly settle into their new
environment.
We place great emphasis on the quality
of our teaching. We know that it must be
of the highest quality. Our teachers therefore
have the correct vision, work hard, buy into
training constantly to improve their practice
and enjoy their work with their classes.
Staff and pupils work proactively together
to ensure that bullying and safety are not
issues within the school. We
have for instance successfully
trained pupils as Peer and
Anti-bullying mentors.
Pupils feel safe because,
in the words of one pupil,
‘everyone is friendly and staff are
approachable’.” Ofsted 2015. Pupils
are supported through activities at their
Induction and during Tutor time to build new
friendships, which they quickly establish.
We implement a homework timetable
for all our year groups, ensuring that pupils
get the right amount of homework across
all subjects and throughout the year. As they
are now older they will receive more than
they are used to at primary school, but they
are supported through a gradual process of
transition so that they are able comfortably
to cope and gain the full benefits of good
homework.
Broomfield is a small, family school which
means it is easy for pupils to get to know us
and for us to get to know them. We look at
each pupil as an individual ensuring
that we are meeting their specific
needs – something that is not
always possible in larger schools.
Pupils are also therefore able to
make good friendships easily.
We recognise that every family is
looking for specific things when it comes
to choosing a secondary school, and not
every school is right for every child. We have
something very special to offer your child and
therefore invite you to visit Broomfield School
either at our Open Evening on 4th October at
6pm, or one of our Coffee Mornings. Come
and be part of our success.
FOCUS ON SCHOOLS
Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School
The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ is a single-sex, independent day school
offering an enthusiastic, positive and challenging learning environment
for creative and inquisitive pupils.
Our Pre-Prep school, located in the leafy St Albans countryside, provides 72 boys aged
between 5 and 7 years old, with a safe and secure environment in which they can thrive.
The Prep school has been the top performing boys’ school in the KS2 Parent Power League
Tables for the last seven years. It has also won the Sunday Times Preparatory School of the
Year twice, in 2006 and 2011 – one of only two schools, and the only boys’ prep, to do so.
Habs Boys’ 2016 GCSE results were the highest on record, with 95.4% of boys achieving
A*/A grades. Highlights from this exceptional performance included the A* grade being
awarded to over 91% of entrants in Mathematics, alongside 85% across the three sciences.
We produce confident and self-motivated young men who are fully prepared
for the challenges of the future.
Little Ones with Big Voices
Grimsdell Pre Prep gets North London singing!
Now in its fourth year, the North London Singing School Festival, hosted by Grimsdell Mill Hill
Pre-preparatory School, took place in March. Three local schools, The Phoenix, Golders Hill
and Aldenham took part, singing songs together and performing in their respective choirs.
The event was organised by Sing Up – an organisation dedicated to providing excellent singing
provision for schools. The idea is to showcase the power of singing and leave us all inspired.
Grimsdell’s singing has gone from strength to strength, culminating in being praised as
‘excellent’ in singing and music by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. Grimsdell’s Toffee Bear
Choir has performed at Barnet Music Festival, at the Royal Festival Hall, Birmingham Symphony
Hall and on Classic FM to name a few!
The infant singing festival was a further step to spread singing, and they’re proud to now call
it an annual event. “All the children have a fantastic time,” says Chao Cox, Head of Music at
Grimsdell. “It’s wonderful that we share our singing experience with other schools and bring our
community together.”
Grimsdell Mill Hill Prep School is part of the Mill Hill School Foundation educating children from 3-18.
FOCUS ON SCHOOLS
THE 11+ JOURNEY
If your Year 5 child is likely to sit any entrance exams for selective state schools,
it’s time to think seriously about 11+ preparations.
It’s essential to have your child academically assessed at this point. This will allow
you to find out if they are capable of passing against the fierce and constantly
increasing competition for places, and indeed whether they are likely to cope in
a highly academic selective senior school.
To succeed, your child needs to be taught both the 11+ curriculum and the
exam techniques and strategies needed to optimise results. Standard primary
school lessons will not provide adequate preparation. One-to-one tutoring, tutor
groups and holiday workshops can all dramatically boost a child’s knowledge
and their confidence to face the exams.
JK Educate are experts in preparing children for the 11+ exams for state selective
and independent schools and offer academic assessments for all children,
including suitability for the 11+. If you would like more information, contact JK
Educate on 020 3488 0754 or at jkeducate.co.uk
