Maintaining a happy...
Work & home life balance
Conflict between work and family life is one of
the most common sources of stress for
working adults. In this productivity-driven
society that we are living in, more and more
people are finding it hard to adequately fulfill
their roles both at home and at the workplace.
More often than not, workers are unable to find
a point of balance between their careers and
their families - there is always one that is given
more priority than the other. This behavior has
been associated with a number of
dysfunctional outcomes - strained familial
relationships, inefficiency at work, and poor
physical and mental health.
More and more people find themselves working
in roles that could be considered “always on”
jobs. Millions of people struggle with an equal
balance of work and home life, including
employers who feel the pressure to keep staff
happy and healthy at all times whilst still
hitting targets. We probably all know a certain
someone who had a “never leave for tomorrow
what you can get done today” sign. To help
strike the right balance, here are some ways to
achieve and maintain life-work balance.
Be open about your needs
Identify what matters to you and communicate
it. Don’t hide it and don’t expect others to guess
what makes you feel balanced and fulfilled. Do
you need to leave work at 5pm so you can have
dinner with your family? Do you need to step
away at 12pm to attend a yoga class? Everyone
can benefit from having an honest conversation
about what balance means.
Respect boundaries
You cannot achieve your balance if you don’t
respect the boundaries you have put in place.
48

You need to stick with it so you develop a
routine. There is always another email to reply
to or a problem at work, but you need to
adhere to your boundaries.
If you don’t then you can't
expect others to respect
them.
What really matters?
Time is the most valuable
commodity in life: it is the
one thing you cannot buy
more of. So, don’t waste time. Focus on what
really matters. For some this may require a
high degree of planning and structure.
Embrace the off button
Pretty much every piece of technology has an
off button, so use it. It is not easy and for many
Getting that perfect
balance between work
and home life is hard,
but get it right and
you’re on to a winner
less emotional when you step away and think
vs. just diving in and responding in the moment.
Pace yourself
To have a long, healthy,
productive and happy life
you need to understand
the value of pace. There
are times when you need
to throttle up and there
are times when you can
throttle down. Selfawareness
is crucial. Doing so will help you
enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Time saving
Online food shopping is the one thing that
most of us can do to help with the work/life
balance. Gone are the days of having to drive
Leaving work on time isn’t
always possible but don’t
make a habit of it.
people this is the hardest thing to do. To get
started, do it in phases. Don’t bring your phone
to the dinner table. When you are on holiday,
be on holiday. Don’t bring your tablet to the
beach. Once you have done it a few times, it is
easier to push the boundaries. When you
unplug and step back you will start to
experience one of life’s greatest treasures -
perspective. You will think about problems you
are wrestling with greater clarity. You allow
yourself the freedom to be more analytical and
to the nearest superstore (with the children in
tow) and go through the ritual of putting
everything in the trolley only to take it all back
out again at the till, put it all back in again and
take it all out again at home. Technology has
had a great impact on our lives, so make sure
you use it to your advantage, rather than
allowing you to do more jobs. Make time for
yourself and family, because as we’re all too
aware, time runs out for us all eventually. You
only get one life, so live it to the full.
Cloudy2Clear Announce
Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions
Which? have now
joined the thousands of
customers who recognise
that Cloudy2Clear
Windows really are a
business that you can
TRUST. The company
which specialises in
repairing windows which
are steamed up, broken
or damaged by replacing
the panes – not the frames
has received the coveted
‘Which Trusted Trader’
status after going through
a rigorous accreditation
process entirely focussed
on customer service.
Group Managing
Director Marcus McGee
believes that Which? have
endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s
long standing company
policy of delivering the
highest standards possible
at all times. ‘Our service
is simple. If your double
glazing has misted up we
can replace the glass at a
fraction of the cost of a
new window, in any type
of frame, and with a new
25 year guarantee. But
it’s not just about saving
people money, although
that obviously helps. Whilst
a number of tradespeople
perhaps don’t focus on
customer care as much as
they should do, we make
sure we turn up when we
say we will, do the job the
customer requires and leave
their house as clean as a
whistle.
Locally Cloudy2Clear
Hutton Mount, Ingatestone,
Ingrave & Herongate and
manager Chris Miller
agrees that this approach
is a major factor in his
success. ‘The truth is that
it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from
doing a good job but also it
makes good business sense.
I get a huge amount of
business from friends and
family of people I’ve done
work for, which just goes
to show how much a little
bit of effort is appreciated
as both my customers
and, obviously a body as
nationally important as
Which? now recognise.’
So, if your windows are
steamed up, broken or
damaged give Chris a call
Focus on
Home Monitoring and
Alert System to assist
Independent Living
Suitable for the elderly, infirm, disabled and
those with memory problems.
ARC Angel is a discreet activity monitoring
and alert system that can be used either on
a standalone basis or as part of an
individual’s care package within the home to
provide round-the-clock assurance for family
members. Without the privacy invasion of
cameras or requiring the constant checking
of online portals it provides a complete
proactive alert system in conjunction with
only your mobile phone.
Warning alerts by text such as going out at
night or spending an unusually long time in
any one room can easily be checked out by
texting a simply ‘Activity’ request to ARC
Angel to show the most recent movements
around the home. Door and room
movements are monitored for a lack of
normal activity and a friendly alert text sent
to the carer’s mobile phone if anything out of
the ordinary occurs.
Unique to ARC Angel, all door and movement
sensors include a panic button which
immediately sends an alert text. Every aspect
of its monitoring can be configured remotely
from the carer’s phone so that in a normal
day no alert texts are sent.
ARC Angel allows you to support your loved
one’s desire to stay in their own home by
giving you peace of mind about their health
and wellbeing, while protecting their hardearned
financial assets from ever-increasing
care home costs. Those hurried calls or
rushed visits can instead be replaced by
spending quality time together when it best
suits you both!
If you require that extra degree of
reassurance that you are doing the right
thing for you and your loved one please
ring our local Care Line on 01245 860252
for technical help and support.
STONYHILL INDOOR BOWLS CLUB
Stonyhill was set up in June 1994 on farmland
in Herongate shared by South Essex Golf club
and is one of 18 such clubs in Essex.
The club has 7 full sized rinks and club members
range in age from teens to 90 years. Bowling
takes place all year round and members can
play in leagues and friendly matches on a
regular basis. Anyone can enjoy the challenge of
achieving and improving. Many members have
joined us through playing outdoors. Others have
come to us seeking a shared hobby to do in
their spare time or retirement.
Members also enjoy the sociability of bowling,
whether they are keen and competitive or just
interested in meeting people from different
walks of life and making new friends. It provides
you with gentle exercise and you don’t need to
worry about the weather!
Another new departure is the expansion into
Short Mat bowls which is proving to be very
popular. We look forward to the continuing
success of our members and our club.
It is not elitist or expensive to belong to Stonyhill
and on Saturday 1st October, 10am-4pm and
Sunday 2nd October, 11am-4pm, you can
come and try bowls for free. We have arranged
for instructors and club members to show you
how to get started. Please bring thick socks or
carpet slippers.
There is a licensed bar and plenty of parking.
