Maintaining a happy... 

Work & home life balance 

Conflict between work and family life is one of 

the most common sources of stress for 

working adults. In this productivity-driven 

society that we are living in, more and more 

people are finding it hard to adequately fulfill 

their roles both at home and at the workplace. 

More often than not, workers are unable to find 

a point of balance between their careers and 

their families - there is always one that is given 

more priority than the other. This behavior has 

been associated with a number of 

dysfunctional outcomes - strained familial 

relationships, inefficiency at work, and poor 

physical and mental health. 

More and more people find themselves working 

in roles that could be considered “always on” 

jobs. Millions of people struggle with an equal 

balance of work and home life, including 

employers who feel the pressure to keep staff 

happy and healthy at all times whilst still 

hitting targets. We probably all know a certain 

someone who had a “never leave for tomorrow 

what you can get done today” sign. To help 

strike the right balance, here are some ways to 

achieve and maintain life-work balance. 

Be open about your needs 

Identify what matters to you and communicate 

it. Don’t hide it and don’t expect others to guess 

what makes you feel balanced and fulfilled. Do 

you need to leave work at 5pm so you can have 

dinner with your family? Do you need to step 

away at 12pm to attend a yoga class? Everyone 

can benefit from having an honest conversation 

about what balance means. 

Respect boundaries 

You cannot achieve your balance if you don’t 

respect the boundaries you have put in place.

You need to stick with it so you develop a 

routine. There is always another email to reply 

to or a problem at work, but you need to 

adhere to your boundaries. 

If you don’t then you can't 

expect others to respect 

them. 

What really matters? 

Time is the most valuable 

commodity in life: it is the 

one thing you cannot buy 

more of. So, don’t waste time. Focus on what 

really matters. For some this may require a 

high degree of planning and structure. 

Embrace the off button 

Pretty much every piece of technology has an 

off button, so use it. It is not easy and for many

everything in the trolley only to take it all back 

out again at the till, put it all back in again and 

take it all out again at home. Technology has 

had a great impact on our lives, so make sure 

you use it to your advantage, rather than 

allowing you to do more jobs. Make time for 

yourself and family, because as we’re all too 

aware, time runs out for us all eventually. You 

only get one life, so live it to the full.

STONYHILL INDOOR BOWLS CLUB 

Stonyhill was set up in June 1994 on farmland 

in Herongate shared by South Essex Golf club 

and is one of 18 such clubs in Essex. 

The club has 7 full sized rinks and club members 

range in age from teens to 90 years. Bowling 

takes place all year round and members can 

play in leagues and friendly matches on a 

regular basis. Anyone can enjoy the challenge of 

achieving and improving. Many members have 

joined us through playing outdoors. Others have 

come to us seeking a shared hobby to do in 

their spare time or retirement. 

Members also enjoy the sociability of bowling, 

whether they are keen and competitive or just

popular. We look forward to the continuing 

success of our members and our club. 

It is not elitist or expensive to belong to Stonyhill 

and on Saturday 1st October, 10am-4pm and 

Sunday 2nd October, 11am-4pm, you can 

come and try bowls for free. We have arranged 

for instructors and club members to show you 

how to get started. Please bring thick socks or 

carpet slippers. 

There is a licensed bar and plenty of parking.
