Code words and actions
I’m sure you’ve seen what I’m
about to describe dozens of times
but you’ve never really gured out
the secret. Here’s the scenario:
A couple is playing a game of cards
with two elderly relatives. The Husband
is a jokester, loving nothing
more than to tease the other three
players. Sometimes he wins the
game, more often he loses, but one
thing is for sure; at a certain point
in the game his wife sends him ‘the
signal’ and seconds later he ends
the game abruptly, telling the other
Jay Lenkersdorfer players it is time for them to go.
This ‘secret code’ has transpired between
this couple since they were married, getting them out of family
Christmas parties, dinners and other events, always without a
single spoken word. Those of us in the family would love to know
their secret, but to date they are far too clever for any of us to catch
them at the game.
Sometimes the secret code isn’t a spoken word but is a special look,
the twist of a wedding band, a blink or even a suppressed ‘fake’
cough.
I have always been impressed with some of the secret signs used
in the Spanish culture to send important messages. My favorite is
when a parent sends a sign to their child by making a little chopping
motion with their palm pointed upward. The arm hardly moves but
the wrist is bending in just the right way – almost like an upside
down wave.
The message is simple – keep that up and you are going to get a
good spanking! It can be so subtle that nobody else in the room sees
the message being sent, but the child knows he has been given fair
warning.
Some years ago I was invited to do a ‘ride along’ with my next door
neighbor who was a police of cer. He was a smart guy and a really
good cop. During this patrol we passed a kid on a motorcycle. In
an instant my friend had the patrol car turned around and his lights
activated.
As it turned out, the kid was driving without a license, registration
or insurance. After a stern talking to, the teen was sent on his way –
on foot – with instructions to come back the next day and push his
motorcycle home.
I was intrigued that my friend was able to read the kid’s ‘code’ and
see that he was up to no good. When I asked what the trigger was,
my friend answered, “He waved to me.” He went on to say that had
the teenager ignored him he wouldn’t have thought twice about the
encounter, but his friendly wave as they passed tipped him off.
“He could have ipped me off and I wouldn’t have thought he was
up to anything, but that friendly wave told me he was guilty.”
The nal code I want to write about is that between siblings. This
is a code that is usually exchanged with a glance and a smile. I saw
just this look as I lost my cool one day and let a few ‘foreign’ words
y off my tongue. My sons were in the car and their little coded exchange
was meant to say “we’ll bring this up later because to do it
now would bring down the wrath of dad upon us.” I know the look;
I used to exchange it with my own brothers.
My mother is in her mid 80’s and is still relatively healthy, but there
are so many of us kids, 10 in all, that I think she can’t remember to
whom she told which story. When she begins a story that we have
heard several times before, my siblings and I simply exchange that
little smile between us, which is our way of saying, ‘oh, you’ve
heard this one before too.” We hate to cut mom off mid sentence
because she really enjoys telling them.
I have my own codes but to reveal them in this column would destroy
a lifetime of work. You’ll just have to guess whether it is a
wink or a nod!
Foreigner, Thank you for
introducing yourself, it
de nitely puts things into
perspective. May I introduce
myself? I am not from another
country. I was born and raised in
The Good old US of A, and went
to school at a time when prayer
and the Pledge of Allegiance were
part of every student’s day. My
Grandfathers, Uncles and Father
all served this country. One Uncle,
who was held in a Japanese
POW camp from the initial attack
at Pearl Harbor until the end of
the war, came home crippled for
life. He credited his survival to
the “hope” he drew from the 8 by
10 American Flag he kept hidden
in his personal clothing. He
did so at the risk of certain death
had it been discovered. What I’m
trying to say is that unlike you, I
take great pride in America’s “exceptionalism”
because without a
doubt she’s The Greatest Nation
this world has ever known. Perhaps
you could join our current
President on his Global Apology
Tour or at least go home if you
dislike America so much.
I never “coined the cutesy
phrase” don’t ask don’t tell. I responded
to “unemployed and hating
it” who thinks that what made
America great was people of all
colors, religions, (don’t knows
and don’t want to knows). That
sounds awfully close to don’t
ask don’t tell to me. Secondly,
the discussion was about what
made America GREAT!! Not
her SCARS!! Using your logic
against me and homosexuals is
as silly as me calling you a Racist
since you excluded the Black
Slaves from your tirade against
America and the mistreatment of
Thank you for saying you saw it in the Weekly Mailer Weekly Mailer
the native Indians. Yes, America
has a checkered past, even a very
ugly side. However, you can not
always lay every child’s sin at the
feet of his parent.
Manifest Destiny came with
Andrew Jackson, not the founders
– Regardless, warts and all,
by the Grace of God, America
rose up to be a world leader in
everything that is good. How did
she do it? What made that possible?
I maintain that it was our
Christian heritage and trust in
The Almighty God!
As for my sin of “textual indebtedness”.
Read it and weep!
Not only will you nd the religions
of all the founders but the
rst Congress as well. (No Muslims!)
What in the world was
the Mayor of Burley
and his cronies thinking
when they approved a raise
for city employees? Doesn’t
he know we are in a recession?
Check with the people of north
Burley and nd out what I mean.
They gave a raise to city employ-
Sound Off
ees and yet the teachers of our
community had to take a pay cut?
Is the State smarter or do they
know something we don’t? The
time is ticking for the Mayor and
his three cronies.
I
was just reading the paper
about the garbage people getting
a raise, it’s a dirty job
and I understand the chore, but
seriously they are slacking.
How are they going to say they
work for the people of Burley
and leave our garbage dumpsters
laying on their sides every
Thursday morning for us to pick
up ourselves? If that’s the case,
lower our garbage bill and tip us
for once because it has become a
chore for us to pick up our garbage
cans every week.
My cousin was murdered
March 31st by her husband.
They were going
through a divorce and one night
meeting each other at the bar by
accident caused him to snap and
her to lose her life. Over the
time that has passed I’ve heard
people talk about the reasons this
man had to do such an evil thing.
How she liked the bars and they
dated different people, but where
people go wrong is she wasn’t
just his wife. She left behind ten
children, ve of them living with
her. She had family who loved
her very much. He may have
had good reason to hate her but
their was no good reason to take
her life. Every day we watch
these children wake up missing
their mom, not quite understanding
why they will never see their
mom again, separated and in different
homes. There is no good
reason to take something so precious
from these defenseless children.
To the Foreigner who hates
America. Why don’t you
just go back to wherever
it was that you got that “supercilious
of yours? I don’t have your
books to read. Is it safe to guess
that they were written by the
likes of Jeremiah Wright, “G.D.
America!”
Just so we are all clear about
the “scores of Anglo-European
settlers that were killed for there
Trees
The City of Burley administration
has neglected to continue
the enforcement of the sidewalk
ordinance over many years. Had
they done so, the cost to the homeowner
would have been feasible.
Prices over the years have gone
from $40 for a 5 ft by 5 ft walk or
25 sq. ft to $133 estimate
It is now time for the city
to take charge of all the entities
above.
The city owns the property
from the center of the roads, both
directions up to a few inches inside
the sidewalk towards the
home. Handicap corners should
be installed at the time the sidewalks
are done. Eight squares for
alleys per block and reinforced.
A lot of trees are heaving the
walks. There are dead trees and
diseased trees. The city should
remove the trees this winter especially
on the city blocks that
will have repairs done in 2011.
They should continue this as time
permits over the following years.
New trees can be replanted, the
kind that more beauti es our
town like maple trees of different
varieties and other types that are
good for the climate.
The size of this project should
receive very competitive bids,
even the concrete companies will
look at it very favorably, again
keeping the cost at a minimum.
The city has budgeted for
curb and gutters and handicap
corners, but feasibly not enough,
but every dollar counts.
The $5 to be charged each
month on the cities 3500 accounts,
equals $210,000 a year.
This completes side walk repair
in 5 years.
The down town sidewalks are
twice the size so they would pay
$10 per month.
Sidewalks across the alleys
also need to be addressed. We
can nd the money to do this
project and keep it going until
all sidewalk issues are completed
Wilson-Bates thief gets 10 years probation
By Stephanie Hansen
Weekly News Journal
BURLEY – A former Wilson-
Bates employee who pocketed
over $7,000 from her employer
instead of depositing it into the
company’s bank account was
sentenced to a 10-year suspended
jail sentence on Tuesday.
Tiffany L. Leon, 30, will not
be incarcerated unless she violates
her probation order, which
bars her from using drugs or
alcohol, possessing a rearm, or
having responsibility for depositing
money at a workplace without
written consent from a future
employer. If she violates any of
those terms, she will face between
three to 10 years in prison.
Leon entered into a plea
agreement with prosecutors on
Sept. 29, in which she entered
an Alford plea to a grand theft
charge, admitting that the state
had enough evidence to convict
her, but not admitting guilt in
the thefts. In return, prosecutors
recommended the suspended jail
sentence.
While working for Wilson-
Bates, Leon had been in charge
of making deposits to the bank.
The grand theft charge against
her came about after other
employees at the furniture store
noticed that she had been making
deposits sporadically instead
of on a regular schedule, which
gave her access to large amounts
of cash, Cannon told the court.
She would then take some of that
cash, and either repay it with her
own money to make a deposit, or
take money from one deposit to
cover another one.
“It’s clear that that’s what she
started doing,” said Deputy Prosecuting
Attorney Blaine Cannon.
“When the other employees
nally caught on, she was in
the position of not being able to
cover the cash that she had taken,
and that was where the shortage
came from. And when it was
all said and done, she had taken
thousands of dollars.”
All told, Leon had taken
$7,345.53 in cash, and had failed
to deposit $10,000 in checks customers
Tiffany Leon makes a statement to the court at her sentencing
hearing on Tuesday. Leon received a 10-year suspended jail
sentence for taking over $7,000 from Wilson-Bates, where she
formerly worked.
employees had to call each customer
whose checks had gone
missing and ask them to reissue
the checks, many of whom did
so.
As part of her plea agreement,
Leon agreed to pay $10,320.53
to Wilson-Bates to cover the cash
she took, the checks that were not
recovered, and the time it took
the employees to work with customers
to reissue the checks. She
will pay at least $100 per month
for the next six months, and at
least $150 per month thereafter
until all of the money is repaid.
Her refusal to admit responsibility
for stealing the cash
by entering an Alford plea was
“unfortunate,” Cannon said.
“I think her friends and former
co-workers would be interested
in hearing her express some
remorse, would be interested in
hearing her take responsibility
and would have some closure
and be able to start moving on
more easily if she were willing to
take responsibility for what she
knows she did,” he told District
Judge Michael Crabtree at the
hearing.
Several of Leon’s former co-
workers were present at Tuesday’s
hearing, but declined to
make a statement to the court.
Leon’s attorney, Timothy Schneider,
said Leon has no criminal
record, and has had a dif cult
time nding employment since
the charges emerged. He asked
Judge Crabtree to grant probation
in the case, as was outlined
in the plea agreement.
“It’s in everybody’s best interest
that Miss Leon go back to
work in whatever capacity she
is able to at this point, and start
making those payments,” he
said.
After her attorney’s remarks,
Leon addressed the court to say
that she is a “very good person”
and is actively looking for work.
“I’m just sorry for what has
happened and I just hope I can
get on with my life and be with
my kids and become the person
that I know I can be,” she said.
Judge Crabtree told the court
that he would impose the sentence
in the plea agreement, but
told Leon that he was also concerned
about her Alford plea.

Ok we just received a letter
from a local truck center
now they will be billing
through a Birmingham, Alabama
called Interstate Billing Service.
I called this company and they
do billing for hundreds of company’s
across the United States
what is wrong with keeping jobs
in Idaho they sure want us to shop
at home. These businesses around
here always want to preach shop
at home but they in turn need to
keep jobs at home.
Feel free to use my name I
used to shop at home maybe not
much longer.
Josie
Regarding Henry:
Today I met a man
named Henry. I was
out paying bills with my wife
(UGH!) and while she was inside
paying a bill at one business she
dropped the money for another!
We found out when we went to
pay it and the money was gone.
I’ve often wondered if this has
happened before, but I’m de -
nitely not crazy enough to ask
her. Anyway she called the rst
place and the secretary told her
a man had found it and wanted
to take it to the address himself
instead of just leaving it there.
When she explained this to me I
thought, “Great, sure, the money
is gone”. I went with her to my
father-in-laws to explain she accidentally
dropped the money for
the bill, and while outside walking
my dog Henry comes walking
up with a huge smile on his
face. To my relief I didn’t have
to pay the bill! He told me what
happened and I just couldn’t stop
thanking him. Isn’t it nice that
in a little town there are people
willing to drive out of their way
for people they don’t even know,
with gas that’s still expensive, to
take someone elses bill money to
them so they don’t have to worry
about getting behind.
So thank you Henry Benavidez,
you are truly a great man!!!
P.S. I think I’ll leave the bill
paying days to my wife!
As the Chairman of the
Mini-Cassia Chapter of
Idaho for Wildlife, I was
recently contacted by the Idaho
Department of Fish and Game
and told about a heart wrenching
situation. According to the IDFG,
Howard Peck, a dedicated sportsman,
high school teacher, father,
and husband from the Pocatello
area was recently diagnosed with
terminal cancer. Howard was given
2 to 6 months to live. Jerome
Hansen, Idaho Fish and Game
Regional Supervisor, stated that
the IDFG had located a landowner
whom was willing to give
some of their landowner tags to
the Peck family so that Howard
would be able to see his boys
shoot their rst elk.
Jerome Hansen stated that
the Idaho Fish and Game did
not have funding to pay for any
of the additional costs such as
fuel, food, hunting supplies, and
etc. Jerome asked me if the Mini-
Cassia Chapter of Idaho for Wildlife
would be able to help in any
way with this expense. I then sent
out an email to our members, and
some non-members, asking for
suggestions on how we could
raise the money to send Howard
Peck and his boys on this hunting
trip.
Well, within four hours of
putting out this email, I had my
answer. This community, not one
of them having ever met Howard
Peck or his family, stepped up
and raised enough money to pay
for the entire amount. The next
day when I called Jerome Hansen
and told him that we had raised
the entire amount, he told me that
he was shocked but delighted. I
told Jerome that the Mini-Cassia
area is a great bunch of people
with big hearts. I know that none
of the people that contributed
really care about getting recognition
for their donations, but I
think it’s important to let these
people know just how much we
truly appreciate them and their
willingness to step up and help a
fellow man and his family ful ll
a dream of a lifetime. I hope that
I don’t forget anyone!
