Annual Report 2011
Helping people reach for their own North Star since 1975!
NORTH STAR Community Services: Year in Review from Executive Director
Dear Friends of North Star Community Services,
I am very pleased to bring you our annual report for fiscal year 2011. Once
again, our services have helped the people we serve realize potential, pursue dreams,
and enjoy life. I am so very proud of the dedicated, compassionate, and highly
knowledgeable staff members that provide essential services to hundreds of people
throughout Northeast Iowa every day.
Mark Witmer
Executive Director
Some highlights of our services this year include performing arts productions in Waterloo and
Waverly. Our day habilitation services program in Waterloo known as Key VII produced the musical Willie
Wonka and the Chocolate Factory to a large audience at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
This play was truly the highlight of the year for many of the people we serve and our staff members.
Our Waverly Center day habilitation program produced a Christmas musical adapted from
the famous Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol. The popularity of the Waverly Center Christmas
productions necessitated that we move to a larger venue. We were so very pleased to have St. Mary’s
Catholic Church host our Christmas program this year to an audience of over 200 people.
These performances give the people we serve opportunities
that many have never experienced before. And, often we discover
talents that have been hidden for a lifetime. Some participants find new
ways of expressing themselves; others simply come out of their shells.
Everyone enjoys participating and everyone is given lots of kudos for their
performances.
One of the participants who rarely talks has no problem acting in the
play, saying his lines, and even singing, as part of his performance. Another
actor showed off his dancing skills while another sang so beautifully that
everyone (fellow actors as well as the audience) was amazed. Yet another
participant used his sign language skills to give people with hearing
difficulties an opportunity to follow the action throughout the production.
These performance opportunities are only of a couple of activities
that I chose to highlight in this letter. However, as you read our annual
report, you will discover that people benefit from North Star services in
many, many ways every day.
On behalf of the board of directors, I thank you for your continued
interest and support of North Star Community Services over this past year.
We are looking forward to many more years of providing services that
empower each person to realize potential, pursue dreams, and enjoy life.
Thanks again for all you do in support of North Star.
NORTH STAR Community Services: Highlights
At North Star we try to help our consumers to develop “natural supports and community
relationships.” But, what is natural support? A natural support is a relationship with someone that an
individual chooses to have in their life - someone who is not paid, who doesn’t also have a disability, and
is based on common interests (ie: a “typical” community member). Natural supports give us all a sense of
belonging since we know that others just want to be with us because they like us. These are two stories
of North Star consumers who have successfully developed natural supports.
Meet Neal Norland who grew up near Cylinder, Iowa (60 miles west of Clear
Lake). Neal, who has cerebral palsy, began receiving North Star services in August of
2010, when he came to Cedar Falls to attend UNI.
Neal is now a sophomore and is taking general education classes while he
tries to choose a major, but he is interested in the ministry and is good at statistics
and web-site building. He lives in the dorms and uses North Star services to help him
with daily living tasks that he is physically unable to do for himself. North Star staff
has helped him develop natural supports on campus, particularly within the dining services. This
allows him to eat whenever he wants to, not only when there is staff available.
It was difficult for him to leave home by himself for the first time, but Neal has been up to
the challenge, overcoming many obstacles in his way (including a broken down wheelchair and two
illnesses). He studies hard, gets very good grades, and has been successful. These are a few of his
successes: Joining campus groups, attending all kinds of Panther sporting events, using the Wellness
Center on campus, and making new friends that he enjoys hanging out with. According to North Star
Service Coordinator, Jenny Allen, “Neal is a great guy and has accomplished some amazing things!”
Meet Jill Meyer, who is 29-years old, lives in Shell Rock, IA and has been receiving services from
North Star in Waverly for more than ten years, and her friend Anastasia Lundt. Anastasia, who grew up in
Pocahontas, Iowa, is currently a Wartburg College senior majoring in biochemistry. She met Jill through
the Best Buddies program her freshman year. Best Buddies is an organization that pairs people with
intellectual disabilities with college students. Through these friendships the “buddies” are encouraged to
be self-advocates and community leaders, all the while making lifelong friendships.
Jill and Anastasia try to get together at least twice a month. They like to
go out to eat, and they both name Texas Roadhouse as their favorite. Jill says
that Anastasia “likes to watch her bowl.” When they get together, they also
enjoy watching movies, baking cookies, or simply lounging around watching
T.V.
When asked what Anastasia likes best about Jill, she said, “her smile and
sense of humor.” She wrote that being friends with Jill has taught her that, “the simple things in life are
the most important. Laughter is always the best medicine, but it never hurts to supplement with good
food!” When asked about Anastasia, Jill said, “Been friends a long time! She’s nice, she’s fun, she’s smart.”
Melissa Hovenga, Community Living Specialist at North Star, describes the relationship. “Anastasia
brightens Jill’s day every time she calls, and when they do something together. I’m sure this friendship
will continue for life!”

10. Therapeutic Garden: Although it is ever-changing and will always be a work in
progress, the major work on the garden is complete. Through a grant from Green
Scene, we were able to plant several additional trees; including apple, pear, and
cherry trees. Our consumers planted an abundance of donated hosta and several
people added wonderful garden sculptures to the space.
9. North Star participants give back. Although we are the beneficiaries of the time
and talents of numerous volunteers, North Star turns the table and gives back to the
community almost every week. In Waterloo our consumers helped out at places like
Friendship Village, NE Iowa Food Bank, the Humane Society, greeted RAGBRAI riders,
and rang bells for the Salvation Army. We collected school supplies for area children
for both fall and spring semesters and sent care packages to soldiers in Afghanistan.
In Waverly many people were the recipients of monthly “give backs” - including
homemade treats, crafts, and flowers.
8. Jeff Schott, custodian at North Star for more than 13 years, was given the Bill
Sackter Self-Advocate award from the State of Iowa Arc. The award is named for Bill
Sackter who was fundamental in the nation’s “self-advocacy movement” of the early
1960’s. In a congratulatory letter, Senator Tom Harkin wrote, “Jeff, you are being
honored with the Self-Advocate of the Year award because you are a shining example
of the unyielding dedication, boundless persistence, and confident determination it
takes to reach your goals.”
7. George lobby’s for the change he wants to see in the world. George, who resides
in Cedar Falls, earned a Master’s degree in public policy in 2008 and has received
supported community living services for 11 years. He is instrumental in the Cedar
Valley Arc’s self-advocacy activities. He helped to organized two trips to Des Moines
to lobby lawmakers against cuts in Medicaid and to maintain the system of residential
care facility/nursing home inspections. On the local level, in March he was one of
several who met with the Waterloo City Council to discuss safety concerns over snow
removal at city bus stops.
6. Neal, who is currently a college student at the University of Northern Iowa, has
made remarkable strides towards being able to live independently.
(Complete story on previous page.)
5. Lavina, who lives in Marshalltown, turned 87 in June. She lived for 20 years at
what was then known as Woodward State Hospital, and then in family life homes.
But, one of Lavina’s dreams was to live in a home of her own, so with North Star’s help
she did just that - at age 80! She is happy in her apartment and enjoys living with her
49-pound cat, Wayne.
4. Brian from Mason City, who came to North Star in December 2008, had been
struggling with issues related to a chronic mental illness - including multiple
hospitalizations. With North Star’s help he has been able to manage his symptoms
and has not been in the hospital for nearly three years. Because of his
progress, our services have been reduced to only ten hours per month!
NORTH STAR Community Services: Highlights
3. Donna from Mason City has been receiving services for more than five years. She has been able to move
from a residential care facility to her own apartment. Donna has made great strides for herself. She is now
able to manage her spending, effectively problem-solve, and has learned to manage anxiety and stress without
going to the hospital. Donna can now manage on only ten hours of services per month!
2. Waverly has Christmas Spirit. 200 friends, family, and community members were in attendance as
North Star’s Waverly Center held its fifth annual Christmas program, an adaptation of “A Christmas Carol,” on
December 7, 2010. The program has become so well-attended, that it necessitated moving the performance
to a much larger venue - St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. The program featured performances, singing,
and music by North Star participants. Not only did they perform the story, they sang several holiday songs
and the Waverly North Star Bell Choir performed.
1. Willy Wonka: A world of pure imagination. On May 11, 2011 at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts
Center in Cedar Falls, more than 1,800 lucky audience members were treated to a wonderful muscial theatre
performance directed by volunteer, Greg Holt. Sixty-four North Star actors, along with seven community
volunteer actors, brought the world of Willy Wonka to life. The audience laughed, sang along to old favorite
songs like “The Candy Man” and “The Oompa Loompa Song.” At the end there was a standing ovation! The
project was a culmination of many months of hard work and included sets, props, and costumes created by
North Star staff, participants, and volunteers.
In collaboration between Newel Post and UNI Sculpture I students, led by Assistant Professor Erica
Voss, 15 individuals who attend Newel Post Adult Day Services got to see their ideas represented in a 3-D
sculpture. These art pieces were showcased in the lobby of the Gallagher
Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on May 11 th , during the Willy Wonka play.
The UNI students were commissioned to interpret a Newel Post
participant’s drawing as a sculpture. The drawings were created during oneon-one
interviews between the students and the participants in response to
such questions as; “What makes you happiest?” or “What do you think is
funny or makes you laugh?” The sculpture was then created by the student
using materials that they created together by making felt from wool in
colors selected by the Newel Post participant.
