NORTH STAR COMMUNITY SERVICES
NORTH STAR Community Services: Year in Review from Executive Director
Dear Friends of North Star Community Services,
Once again, we have experienced a successful year of providing essential services to
hundreds of people throughout 13 counties in Northeast Iowa. Our highly skilled,
compassionate, and dedicated staff members provided supported living services, day
habilitation and day care services, and employment services to over 580 people.
Some of the results of our services include;
Mark Witmer
Executive Director
o People we serve in day habilitation and adult day care programs had more opportunities to participate in
community activities than ever before
o A full scale art exhibit showcasing the talents of many of the people we serve was presented at the Hearst
Center for the Arts
o A Christmas program presented by our Waverly Center consumers was performed to a packed house
(necessitating a change of venue for this year)
o 95% of the people receiving supported living services significantly improved in their ability to live
independently in the community
o Nine people (3%) we served in supported living services no longer need our services
From a financial standpoint, we were lucky to defy some of the difficulties
many others have been dealing with as a result of the economic downturn. We
ended our fiscal year with revenues in excess of expenses by a small margin.
As I am writing this letter to you today, though, our financial success of last
year will not be repeated in fiscal year 2011. We are projecting a very difficult
remainder of the fiscal year which will likely continue into fiscal year 2012.
Unfortunately, funding cuts and increased costs have resulted in a not-so-rosy
financial outlook.
For the remainder of this fiscal year, at least, we are planning to redouble
our efforts to raise additional funds in order to close the gap between our
revenues and our expenses. Over the years, our efforts concerning private fund
raising have always been to use private contributions to enhance or improve
services in ways that could not be covered by our fees. However, this year, we
are appealing to our donors and contributors to consider helping us through
this difficult time – not necessarily by helping to enhance services, but to
help insure their continued financial viability. You can help by considering a
donation to North Star Community Services, Inc. this year.
On behalf of the board of directors, I thank you for your continued interest
and support of North Star Community Services over this past year. We are
looking forward to many more years of providing services that empower each
person to realize potential, pursue dreams, and enjoy life. Thanks again for all
you do in support of North Star.
• Day Habilitation Services
• Advantage Day Habilitation
• Brain Injury Services Leisure Center
• Newel Post Senior Day Services
and experiences that promote personal growth, confidence, and community
involvement.
Those who participate in day programs also give back to their communities by
volunteering at the food bank, shelters, and other social service organizations.
They also collected winter clothing items and assembled pins for veterans.
Clients collect items to assemble boxes that get mailed to our troops in
Supported Community Living ServiCeS
In fiscal year 2010 North Star Community Services’ Supported Community
Living (SCL) programs helped hundreds of individuals with a wide range of
disabilities to live in their own home or apartment in the community. SCL
services are designed to support an individual’s choice to live as independently
as possible. Services address the need for training and support in areas such
as: health, safety, home maintenance, community accessibility, self-advocacy
and budgeting.
Individuals receiving SCL support in 2010 maximized their independence by
meeting 86%+ of their personal independent living goals.
Bill M. came to North Star Community Services in April 2010. He has a mild intellectual
disability and since he only has a 3rd grade education he has problems with reading and
writing. Bill had been struggling with depression as well as drug & alcohol dependency.
He had been unsuccessful in his business and personal life - he had no family, no income,
was several thousands of dollars in debt and had been in and out of the hospital numerous
times.
Since coming to North Star, he has been able to apply for and receive social security
benefits, which is allowing him to pay-off several of his debts and fines. North Star’s staff
helped him set up a verbal driver’s license exam, which enabled him to pass and obtain
his driver’s license. He is now clean and sober and getting re-acquainted with some family
members. Bill feels he is now “living the dream” and according to him, “this is his second
chance and he is not going to blow it!”
One interesting thing about Bill is that he owns a very unique home in Laurel, Iowa. His
home had been featured in local papers because Bill made all of the improvements to his
home himself, using only found or donated materials (including an old grain bin as part of
the roof).

The great things people
are saying about North
Star...
“Everything is excellent. He
loves coming to Newel Post
and would be very lonseome
if he didn’t”.
“The care is tremendous - I
have no worries or concerns
while our daughter is at North
Star. The program is great
and the people working there
are extraordinary.”
“He is learning to be
responsible and seems much
more content since he
started. I’m very appreciative
of this opportunity for him.”
Newel Post is “a great
program with wonderful staff”.
“There is always a happy
greeting at the door. Dad
really enjoys his time.”
North Star is “invaluable and
goes above and beyond for
their clients. To be honest, we
don’t know what we would
do without this help and
support. Thank you so much!”
