Sharing our Values Message from the the Executive Director Thank you for reflecting on 2012 with us through this annual report. While the usual focus of the Executive Director’s contribution to the annual report is to highlight the accomplishments of the organization over the past year, I am going to break with tradition slightly as this year’s report includes items from my predecessor, Joanne Jasper. I have had the privilege of being part of DSS since 2007, when I started working with the staff, volunteers, stakeholders and our supporters, all of whom helped orientate me to this incredible organization. In January 2013, I began my role as Executive Director, a role I took on following Joanne Jasper, whose leadership since 2007 has helped DSS flourish. I know I speak for the entire DSS community in expressing my gratitude to Joanne for her contributions. Population aging concerns has been the focus within government for the past number of years. This has been a cause for optimism for many organizations serving older adults, that real change was coming. Joanne lead DSS through many years of growth and development and saw that DSS was positioned to embrace the change required to effectively support our many high needs communities, such as aligning DSS for the agencies first ever accreditation survey. In 2012 DSS embarked on an incredible journey of quality and successfully became an accredited organization. DSS has successfully grown its programs and reach in the community. It has responded and evolved to our changing circumstances from governance to operations. In the past year, DSS appointed a new Board Chair and new Executive Director to the organization. While both occurred within succession it spoke to the strength of the organization to weather such a significant shift in leadership. I assure you, our stakeholder, that I will continue to work to guide DSS to growth and greater things! Message from the Board chair It is indeed a privilege to work and serve with the Downsview Services for Senior Board of Directors, and be part of an organization with such a dedicated and passionate community. This past year, we witnessed both outstanding performance and difficult challenges to the agency. For the first time in our agency’s history, we became an Accredited agency by CARF International. We also saw a major movement to our Seniors Leadership Team with the departure of Joanne Jasper who tirelessly moved DSS forward in the past six years. I want to thank you all for your patience and understanding during the transition under the new leadership of Susan Doyle. In the short time that Susan has taken on her new role, she has already begun to focus on fulfilling DSS’ Vision of leadership that promotes optimal health and wellness for seniors and caregivers in our communities through our outstanding partnerships, programs and services. I can assure you that our passionate and committed Board of Directors is dedicated to DSS’ mission, vision and values. Together, along with our diverse community and the help of partners, DSS will continue to be a high performing community support services agency, providing the best possible care for our communities now and into the future. Sincerely, David Mousavi Chair, Board of Directors Today, our challenges are far more demanding than perceived, as the need for constant change in our culture and delivery are far more intense and our stakes much higher. We must respect our traditions and values but we cannot allow them to serve as a barrier to re-inventing ourselves to continue to implement our vision and mission for our community. It is hard to leave traditions and embrace new directions and challenges; however, given our current government, population growth and funding restrictions; to continue to fulfill our mission then we must evolve–re-interpret, re-imagine and redesign our traditions to embrace new ones that will be more effective in fulfilling our mission.
