Dead of the Nite

The Merrye Family is cursed with a degenerative age regression
brain disease caused by generations of in-breeding resulting in a
slow downward spiral into madness and cannibalism. The family
chauffeur Bruno (Lon Chaney jr), has promised to look after the
three Merrye children; Virginia, Elizabeth, and Ralph.
When greedy relatives of the Merrye family, accompanied by a conniving
lawyer and his assistant, come to visit and subvert the family fortune, they
are entagled in the Merrye's twisted web of madness.
One of the most underrated films of the sixties, Jack Hill's "Spider Baby" is
phenonmenal piece of dark comedy, a touch of Arsenic and Old Lace, a
pinch of the Old Dark House mixed with a liberal amount of Cormanesque
humor. Spider Baby is the precursor of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The
HIlls Have Eyes and House of a 1000 corpses.
Spider Baby is one of Lon Chaney Jr last and best performances. Jill Banner
also gives a truly stellar performance in her debut role as the Spider
Baby.
Director Jack Hill was famous for making audiences emote
with antiheroes, leaving audiences (and you) to cheer when the victims get
their just desserts. One of our favorite movies of all time, you don't want
to miss this Classic Film if not only to hear Chaney sing the title song!
The Cast includes Sid Haig, a favorite of Jack Hill, as
Ralph, a sexually aware but child like simpleton who
gets to eat what we catches. Jill banner plays Spider
Baby, the girl fascinated with spiders. Don’t let her
catch you in her web! Carol Ohmart is well cast not
only as the money hungry aunt but also the eye candy
for the film. Lon Chaney Jr., plays Bruno, the caring
Chauffeur who promised Titus Merrye to look
after the children and the rest of the Merrye family.
Chaney plays the part perfectly, devoted, caring but
mad himself by the years of service.
