NORTHLAND NEWS October 2016
MISSION STATEMENT: Northland Library enables, encourages and empowers lifelong learning and discovery.
At Your Library
Artwork from children who have been helped by The Highmark Caring
Place will be on display at the Library until the end of November.
Feature Focus:
Northland Library thanks you! Our communities support so many of our programs,
events and fundraising activities and we would like to simply say thanks. Residents of
Bradford Woods, Franklin Park, Marshall, McCandless and Ross are responsible for
providing the Library with 60% of our total funding. So essentially you are the boss!
We listen to our communities and offer the resources and services that are important
to you, your family and friends. It’s time to appreciate you! Throughout September we
asked you to Love Your Library, but this month we want to focus on why your Library
loves you right back!
In August, you helped us to recycle 10,000 lbs. of e-waste! We had such an overwhelming
response to this event, patrons just trying to come to the library had a
difficult time getting in the door; and for that, we apologize. We will do better to ensure
that our regular services aren’t disrupted in the future by events like this. In September,
you helped us to raise more than $7,000 for Love Your Library month. We average over
550 adults at programs each month. Since January 2016, more than 18,800 children
have attended programs at Northland! We anticipate that the October book sale will
also be well attended and you will find a great book at a bargain price!
The biggest reason we love our patrons so much is because they always come back!
We watch kids grow and learn, we see old friends get reacquainted, and we watch
teens with their tutors studying for their next exam. We even visit with members of the
community when they just need a smile and a friendly person to talk to. We are YOUR
Library and we are here for you, always!
Day Parade in September.
Patron Feedback
“Dear Wilbur (the Library’s Guinea Pig),
I really like the library. I think
that you are really lucky to be
here every day!
Yours truly,
Victoria”
Beyond the Stacks – Receiving Library Notices on Your Phone
For many of us, our cell phones have become our primary means of communication, outperforming our PCs, laptops, or landline phones. Because
of that, many library users prefer to receive library notifications as phone texts. Text Notifications can connect you to your library account via text
message. You can receive notifications, renew checked out items, and get information about holds, checked out items, and late fees. The service is
free to anyone registered at an Allegheny County public library. However, depending on your phone plan, additional per-message charges may be
assessed by your carrier.
To sign up, add einetwork@shoutbomb.com to your cellphone contacts. Then text the following: SIGNUP+ your-14-digit-library card number+your
PIN. Send it to einetwork@shoutbomb.com. Please note, you must include the plus signs (+) between each element of the text.
Once you sign up, you will receive texts confirming your successful sign up and asking if you want to supply an email address as an additional contact.
This is optional and will only be used to contact you in the event that your notices are undeliverable.
To learn more about what kinds of notices are sent and how to opt in or out of receiving them; how to renew items; what to do if you’re not
receiving notifications; when the notices are sent; how to update your phone number; how to add or remove additional library cards from your text
notice account; how to unsubscribe from the service; and how to use quick keywords to get information about your account, log into “My Account”
https://librarycatalog.einetwork.net/MyResearch/Home with your card and PIN numbers, and click on “Text Notices Help” (in the right-hand column
under “Catalog Help”).
Volunteer Focus
Name: Rachel Moore
Volunteer’s Assignment: Summer Intern in the Children’s & Teen Services (CATS)
Volunteer Municipality: Hampton Township
Why do you volunteer at Northland Library?
Rachel Moore volunteered at Northland this summer because she believes the public library is a very important community resource. “Northland
does so much good for the community and I loved being a part of the important work of the Children & Teen Services (CATS) this summer.”
Rachel is a recent graduate with her MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh where she specialized in public libraries. In the CATS department, she
was responsible for helping to design summer reading programming, planned and executed several of the picture book picnic programs, and also
created a teen writing workshop. Through this summer experience, Rachel came to love working in CATS and will pursue a career as a children’s
librarian.
