Jane Howard’s Fables from the Farm It’s already Christmas in the supermarkets and getting towards the end of the year on the calendar – but in farming it’s all just kicking off October already. Aaaagh. While it may seem like the year is drawing to a close, in the world of agriculture it is quite the opposite and Michaelmas, which falls on September 29th, is very much seen as the start of the farming calendar. Michaelmas is named after St Michael the Archangel, the greatest of all the Archangels honoured for defeating Satan in the War of Heaven. He is seen as a protector against the dark of night, and the administrator of cosmic intelligence! So quite an interesting chap then, but on a more mundane level Michaelmas, coming around the equinox (when night time hours are the same as day time hours) is also one of the Quarter Days – the others being Christmas Day, Lady Day and Midsummer Day. Traditionally farmers expected to have completed the harvest by Michaelmas and it’s the day when rents were due, leases began and servants hired. Although we won’t be hiring any servants this year at Coopers, there is still very much a feeling that another year has drawn gently to a close. 2016 has been an exceptionally good year for grass and our barns are crammed with hay and straw in preparation for the cattle “Rather like dress sizes, cows get scored according to their level of rotundity” coming in when the weather changes again in November. The pigs are fat as butter (having stuffed themselves with acorns) and ditto the cattle. In terms of assessing the condition of the cows, rather like dress sizes they get scored according to their level of rotundity with one being exceptionally thin and five being far too much of a Bessie Bunter. Sussex cows are known for their ability to ‘do well’ on the roughest grazing and having enjoyed the summer grass mine are edging dangerously up the scale, but this is to be expected. And when they come inside at the end of the year, the calves will be weaned off them and they will go on a four month ‘hay diet’ i.e. just hay so they slim down to calve in the spring at a respectable 3.5 or 4.0. The ewes, however, end the summer looking much plainer (thinner in farming parlance) having raised a couple of lambs that end up being almost the same size as their mothers. The lambs were weaned in August and the ewes are now on a ‘rising plane of nutrition’ to end up in tip top condition ready for the rams in early November. Unlike cows and pigs that are fertile all year, female sheep only come into oestrus when the night time hours exceed the day time hours (so, starting around Michaelmas) and traditionally the rams are put to the ewes on Bonfire Night with lambs appearing after April Fools’ Day, a clever way of ensuring the lambs only come when the weather warms up and the grass starts growing. So the ewes are now grazing the better pasture and soon they will go on to the best the farm has to offer – those fields which were cut for hay and have sweet and succulent regrowth - to be flushed. Grazing such nutritious grass encourages them to produce more eggs so when they do get together with the rams the result will be more twins and triplets as opposed to singles. The other thing I love about this time of year is blackberrying and producing pots of bramble jelly. But that too must come to an end. Going back to our cosmic administrator St Michael, apparently when Satan was hurled out of heaven he fell to the ground and landed in a patch of brambles. Not being best pleased he poured fire and brimstone on the innocent bushes and apparently renews the curse every Michaelmas, so unsuspecting foragers like you and I should never pick them after September 29th. But that doesn’t matter too much as soon it will be time for the sloes and strangely the gin always seems more popular than the jam.
