SAT. OCT 22, 2PM, San Francisco, CA
A Dreamy
Afternoon: Jimi @ SF State

This coming October, learners and teachers of Chinese in the Bay Area can look forward to a
very special treat. Taiwan’s famous children’s book illustrator Jimi (Jimmy Liao) will be in
San Francisco for a series of events organized by the Chinese Program at San Francisco State
University in co-operation with a number of partners. Jimi has authored and illustrated over
50 books that have been translated into dozens of foreign languages. His art adorns
Taiwanese postal stamps and metro cards and several of his books have been turned into
award-winning movies. Haode Ge, staff writer of the CLTAC Newsletter, met with Frederik
Green, Assistant Professor of Chinese at SF State, to talk about the upcoming event series
that will take place between October 20-22, 2016.
CLTAC: First of all, congratulations on getting
such a celebrity to come to San Francisco!
Was it difficult to invite Jimi?
FHG: Yes and no. There is quite a story behind
the project. I won’t spill all the beans --- if you
are curious about the whole story, you have to
come to the reading on October 22. But let
me tell you this much: Jimi at first was not very
enthusiastic. His editor, whom I first presented
with the idea, told me that the last two times
Jimi gave talks abroad, things did not end
well. He went to Italy and Sweden to receive
awards from the respective Ministries of
Cultures. In Italy, he got food poisoning and in
Sweden, he caught a nasty cold the moment
he stepped off the plane. No wonder, it was
the middle of November! So I hastened to
add that San Francisco’s weather in late
October is the opposite of that of Sweden,
and that San Francisco has the best food in
the world. When I then told him that there are
countless fans of Jimi’s art and many
enthusiastic learners of Chinese in the Bay
CLTAC Newsletter Fall 2016 2

CLTAC NEWSLETTER - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Area craving to meet him, he simply couldn’t
decline.
CLTAC: Jimi is the kind of artist who is
enjoyed by readers of all ages. Why do you
think he appeals to such a wide audience?
FHG: I think there are many reasons. His work
really appeals to many different age groups.
While the beautiful illustrations appeal to
children and adults alike, most of the stories
are actually more suitable to teenagers, young
adults or even adults. They often explore
themes many of us are familiar with: one’s first
love, the deep bonds of friendship, the beauty
of dreams, the hardships of growing up. This
last topic is beautifully captured in his most
recent work (Kiss and
Goodbye, 2015). And then there are works
that deal with topics such as disability, like
(The Sound of Colors, 2001) about a
blind girl that leans to imagine the world
around her without the gift of sight. But above
all, Jimi is just an incredibly captivating
storyteller, one who can tell the most moving
of stories with only a handful of carefully
chosen words and beautifully drawn images.
CLTAC Newsletter Fall 2016 3

CLTAC NEWSLETTER - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
CLTAC: Jimi is well known not just Taiwan or
China, but has a huge fanbase all over Asia
and his works are also translated into many
European languages. What gives his work
such a global appeal?
FHG: There clearly is something universal
about his art. One has to look very hard to
place his stories in a specific context. In
(Thank you Furry Bunny, 2006),
for example, there is a drawing of Taipei 101,
but other than that, the city depicted looks
like any other big city in the modern world.
The same can be said for many of his
characters. To me, Jimi has moved beyond the
narrow confines of nation or ethnicity, which I
find wonderfully refreshing. And even when
his works make references to concrete
environments, as, for example in
, which was inspired by a trip to Japan
where his art was part of the Echigo-Tsumari
Art Triennial, it takes on such dreamlike quality
and incorporates so many styles that the final
book simply defies easy categorization. I think
that’s why he has a global following.
CLTAC: Can you tell our readers something
about the format of the event?
FHG: The main event will be a two-hour fully
bi-lingual multi-media talk and reading on
Saturday, October 22, at SF State. It will start at
2pm and will be held at McKenna Theater, the
biggest event space at SF State with a
capacity for over 600 people. There will be a
book signing at the SF State bookstore
immediately following the event where some
of his books will also be on sale. The event is
free and open to the public, but registration is
required. Please visit the Eventbrite posted
below. Participation in the CLTAC Fall
Workshop comes with a guaranteed seat,
since CLTAC has been a major sponsor of
Jimi’s visit and the Saturday event is part of
the Fall Workshop. The other main event is a
screening of the movie (Starry Starry
Night, 2009) that is based on Jimi’s book of
the same title on Thursday, October 20 at the
University of San Francisco (USF). USF’s
Center for Asia Pacific Studies has been our
co-sponsor for the event. The movie will be
followed by a Q&A with Jimi. The screening
and Q&A are also free and open to the public,
but registration is likewise required. There is a
separate Eventbrite, also posted below.
CLTAC: It seems there are a number of
partners involved in this project?
FHG: Absolutely! This is the biggest event the
Chinese Program at SF State has ever hosted,
and without our wonderful partners and
sponsors, we would not have been able to
pull it off. USF’s Center for Asia Pacific Studies
was immediately on board when we brought
up the idea, as was CLTAC. In fact, CLTAC,
SFSU, and USF have a long history of working
together in promoting Taiwanese and
Chinese-language Culture in the Bay Area
and we are excited to take this cooperation to
a new level. The College of Liberal and
Creative Arts at SF State has been a
tremendous backer of the project, both
financially and by providing the event space.
TECO, the Taipei Economic and Cultural
Office in San Francisco, has been a generous
supporter of all our Taiwan events, including
this one, and Cheng & Tsui Company and the
SF State Confucius Institute are both
sponsoring the event. CAIS, the Chinese
American International School is another
major partner, and they actually will host a
student event with Jimi which will also be
open to Chinese immersion students from the
SFUSD. We are particularly grateful for the
support of some local businesses. The
Argonaut Hotel, San Francisco’s finest
boutique hotel located in the historic Haslett
Warehouse near Fisherman’s Wharf, is kindly
providing accommodation for Jimi. And China
Airlines, Taiwan’s national carrier, generously
offered to bring Jimi to San Francisco for us.
CLTAC: I heard that China Airlines decorated
one of their planes with images from Jimi’s
books. Will Jimi be traveling in that plane?
FHG: (Laughs) I was wondering that as well.
Let’s ask him on October 22!
Following an opening address by CLTAC Vice President and
Conference Chair Le Tang of host institution Stanford University,
the morning session kicked off with a keynote speech by Professor
Xia Liang of Washington University in St Louis, who presented a
retrospective of Chinese language education in the United States,
starting from the work of missionaries and the recruitment of
native speakers by East Coast Universities and business guilds in
the nineteenth century, tracing the path of its development
through the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the advent of
World War II in the twentieth century, all the way to the current
state of Chinese language instruction in
present-day America. Liang praised the
contributions of important pioneers in
Chinese language teaching in the U.S. such as
missionary-historian Kenneth Scott Latourette
(1884-1968) and China scholar Luther C.
Goodrich (1891-1986), but emphasized also
that Chinese language education in the U.S.
would not have achieved its present scale
were it not for the circumstances of history.
The keynote speech was followed by a single
morning session with two separate panels in
Bishop Auditorium and Room 224 of the East
Asian Library. In the morning panel on
Curriculum Development, speakers explored
explored Mandarin topic structures, the
teaching of Chinese syntax, and trends of
teaching in the twenty-first century. In a
concurrent panel on K-12 Chinese Instruction,
presenters from local K-12 schools reported
on experiential learning, the use of authentic
materials, and digital scrapbooking projects.
Following an hourlong lunch break during
which participants dined throughout the
Lathrop Library’s sunny central quad, the
afternoon session began at 1 PM with two
early afternoon panels. The first, housed in
Bishop Auditorium, explored the teaching of
Chinese at the advanced level, with both local
i n s t r u c t o r s a n d s p e a ke r s f ro m a f a r
differentiated instruction, the effects of
different task types, and the design of a
hybrid advanced Chinese course. In a
concurrent session on teaching strategy,
speakers presented findings in the areas of
task-based learning, short-term immersion,
and differences in learning strategy between
young learners and adult learners.
Following a fifteen minute coffee break, the
late afternoon sessions began in full force.
The panel on the teaching of characters and
pronunciation saw papers on the use of
numbers in teaching Chinese tone, the
production and perception of Mandarin
intonation, and the application of historical
sound change to decipher elements of
pictophonetic character; a concurrent panel,
meanwhile, looked into the selection of
newspaper readings, the production of
instructional videos, and the design of webbased
mulimedia for heritage learners. The
final session included a talk on the use of
meaningful rather than drills in Chinese
language instruction, as well as a presentation
of criteria used in the evaluation of public
speaking, meant for those who will serve as
judges in the Association’s upcoming
Mandarin speech contest.
Upon the conclusion of all eight panels, the
events of the day were wrapped up closing
remarks by CLTAC president Liwei Gao of the
Defense Language Institute. This year’s Spring
Conference was attended by seventy-five
language professionals and Chinese
language enthusiasts from across Northern
California.
Chen in charge of high school, and Chao Xie,
Chris Wen-chao Li, and Lois Gao in charge of the
college division.
Sorting of participants concluded at around 1
P.M., at which point the group stopped for lunch at
the nearby Blue C Sushi in Stonestown Galleria.
Following lunch break, committee vice chair Chao
Xie went over task assignments for the day of the
contest, covering such matters as registration and
payment, rental of venue, invitation of special
guests, judge recruitment and training, afternoon
entertainment, purchase of trophies and
certificates, design of event brochures, collection
and calculation of scores, and press and
Chris Wen-chao Li
April 23 – The Annual Mandarin Speech Contest of the Chinese Language Teachers Association
of California (CLTAC) was held at Lowell High School Saturday, attracting large crowds as the
contest headed into its forty-first year. Close to five hundred contestants coming from some 37
schools all over Northern California were gathered at Lowell’s Lakeshore campus together with
their friends, family and supporters, many decked in formalwear or traditional Chinese dress,
ready to showcase their abilities in the Chinese language.
The opening ceremony began at 12:15 PM in the auditorium of Lowell High School. CLTAC
President Liwei Gao of the Monterey Language Institute greeted the crowd and congratulated
them on their achievements in learning Chinese language. He explained also that the contest was
the largest of its kind in the world, and that Chinese language teaching in the state of California
has a long and storied history. Gao congratulated the participants on having chosen to study
Chinese language, which is a passport to one of the world’s most vibrant economies, and
provides access to the lives of some 1.3 billion people, as well as a great civilization reaching
back five thousand years. Gao’s address, delivered in Mandarin, was translated into English by
San Francisco State University professor Chris Wen-chao Li.
Upon the conclusion of the opening ceremony at 12:30 PM, participants streamed into separate
classrooms to engage in level-appropriate competition. Contestants were divided into four main
groups: elementary school, middle school, high school, and college/university, and within each
group subdivisions were created based on family background (Mandarin, dialect or none) and
length of language study. Results started trickling in at around 1:30 PM, and while CLTAC
Note:
1. Due to the mistake made by a tutor during the process of registration, a few contestants were registered
for the group I-A-1 instead of the group I-D-1 where they were supposed to be registered for. The
Organizing Committee reviewed this case and decided that those contestants were retroactively
disqualified from the competition. As a result, their names were removed from the winner list.
2. Upon reviewing registration records for contestants, the Organizing Committee found that the original
winner of the 1st Place from Group I-C-1&2 does not have the qualification to participate in this contest
according to speech contest rules. The Organizing Committee reviewed this case and decided that CLTAC
has to retroactively strip this contestant of her 1st Place and the award will be retracted. The Organizing
Committee moved everyone else from the same group up by one level. As a result, the original
winner of Honorable Mention from Group I-C-1&2 became the winner of the 1st Place from that group.
