I stopped to visit with a painter during
last year’s Art in the Park event at Arnolds
Park’s Preservation Plaza. It’s rare to find a
vendor actually working during Art in the
Park, plus the scene he was working on reminded
me of the square, white farmhouse
I grew up in, though the road and driveway
were completely different. As I watched him
paint he began to tell me how simple painting
is, and how anyone can learn.
While I believe anyone can learn, I don’t
know that we’re all capable of learning to
the same level. Somewhere along the way
talent and passion have to be a factor.
Passion has to be what keeps artists doing
what they do. Experimenting with various
media. Incorporating two or more techniques
in a way they haven’t been before.
Capturing emotion and being able to recall
that feeling going forward.

Orange City Arts is offering up
some new flavors to delight
your ears.
On Thursday, Oct. 6, as a part of
their Beyond Onstage Orange City
season, they’ll be presenting Herencia
de Timbiquí.
They are a 12-person band that
hails from Columbia and they play
the instruments traditional to Columbia’s
coast including bombo drums,
congas, guasá shaker and marimba de
chonta — a wooden xylophone. They
also add in the trumpet, saxophone,
keyboards, guitar and vocals.
Herencia de Timbiquí is not only a
popular band in Columbia, but they
are becoming a worldwide sensation.
“We connected with Southern
Exposure: Performing Arts of Latin
America, a program of Mid Atlantic
Arts Foundation. They had a list of
several Latin American groups that
they’re working with this year — giving
grants to sponsoring organizations,”
said Janine Calsbeek, the
executive director of Orange City
Arts. “We fell in love with Herencia

de Timbiquí. Their music is full of
energy! It’s so exciting to bring them.
It’s amazing for small town Iowa to
bring an international ensemble with
12 performers!”
Herencia was recognized by USAID
in a 2014 documentary highlighting
Colombian music and the challenges
and injustices of the Colombian Pacific
Coast, where the town of Timbiquí
is located.
“The objective of the Foundation
and the social and cultural project we
carry out is to promote community
and peace along the Pacific coast and
give a message of hope, so that the
young people understand and value
the importance of recognizing their
culture and fighting for their dreams,”
stated Begner Vásquez, vocalist, composer,
and one of the band’s founders.
The music that Herencia will be
performing in Orange City will encompass
everything from upbeat to
more quiet.
“They play everything from from
urban beat to quieter music with
marimbas with engaging, beautiful
harmonies. My coworker Jen is dancing
at her desk in my office now as I’m
playing Herencia! It has a contagious
energy,” Calsbeek said. “They enrich
the traditional music of the deepest
part of Colombia with other elements
— the sounds of Latin music, rock,
jazz and funk.”
Calsbeek is especially excited to be
bringing in this group that has a wide
appeal to people who love music.
“It’s a great show for Latino people!
Young people. Old People. Everyone
in-between. Anyone interested in international
experience! Anyone who likes
to move with music!” said Calsbeek.
“We’ve already sold tickets to a couple
from Le Mars who loved the group
we brought a couple of years ago,
Baladino. Herenica will be exemplary,
like the four international music ensembles
we sponsored earlier.” F

Artisans Road Trip set for Oct. 8-9
You don’t have to travel to the
big city to experience a culture
of art.
It might surprise you to learn that
there’s a thriving art culture right here
in rural N’West Iowa.
And the artists, who comprise this
bright culture, are opening their doors
to you.
For the 13th year, the Artisans Road
Trip is offering up local artists, their
work and some of their workshop
spaces for the viewing pleasure of anyone
who wants to take a road trip the
weekend of Oct 8-9.
The Artisans Road Trip is a free
event and will take place Saturday,
Oct. 8, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday,
Oct. 9, from noon to 5 p.m.
Over the years, the road trip has
grown and this year, they will have
41 artists who are participating in the
Artisans Road Trip.
“We’re very excited that we have 41
artists this year. That’s not even all of
the artists in the area either, so we’re
looking to continue growing,” said
Haley Tardiff, the chairperson of the
Artisans Road Trip.
Artists have the choice of opening
their studio space or showing their
work in a gallery setting. Tardiff, who
lives in Lakefield, MN, and works in
Spirit Lake, has chosen to show her
work at the Summerwind Gallery in
Arnolds Park.
“I have a degree in photography and
I do a little acrylic painting, but my
first original and true artistic love is
drawing cartoons and comics,” Tardiff
said.
She will be displaying some of her
cartoons and comics during the Artisans
Road Trip.
One of the greatest things about
Artisans Road Trip is the wide range of
art that is available for viewing.
“We have potters, jewelers, photographers,
painters, fabric artists.
We have sculptures. There is such a
variety it’s incredible,” Tardiff said.
“You don’t think that rural Iowa has
an artistic culture, but we have such a
vibrant art scene here.”
The Artisans Road Trip officially
happens once a year, but the organizers
work year-round to promote the
event.
They have held six touring group
shows in Fairmont, MN, Worthington,
MN, Clear Lake, IA, Storm Lake,
IA, Spencer, IA.
They have a show opening at the
Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji
on Oct. 6.
Another appeal for event goers,
according to Tardiff, is the relaxed
nature of the Artisans Road Trip.
“You can come and go. There’s maybe
a little stigma about an art opening
type of event whereas the Road Trip is
an event where you can pack up your
family, your kids, grandma. You can
grab your best friends and see art in a
relaxed environment and at your own
pace,” Tardiff said. F

Walking through the woods at
night may be a frightening
thought for some, especially
around Halloween, when scary movies
fill the television schedule and the
ghosts and ghouls come out to play.
But at Oak Grove Park near Hawarden
that is exactly what several hundred
trick-or-treaters are planning to
do. The annual Trick or Treat Hike is
slated for Saturday, Oct. 8, from 5:30-
8 p.m. with children 12 and under encouraged
to dress up in their favorite
costume and visit both Deer Run and
Turkey Ridge Campground.
“We’ve had about 700 people visit
each of the past couple years,” said
Jessica Van Oort, office assistant with
Sioux County Conservation. “Those
who like to trick or treat can go from
camper to camper at both Deer Run
and Turkey Ridge.”

The trail from the river bottom to
Deer Run campground is lit by luminaries.
Visitors are invited back to the
river bottom for a bonfire and hot
chocolate after their trick or treating is
done.
It has all been going on for quite
awhile, at least 10-12 years, according
to Van Oort.
“We’re getting into the generation
that grew up doing it now coming
back and wanting to do the hike with
their own children,” Van Oort said.
“Huge families come out and dress
up as well as big camping groups each
year. There is always something a bit
different, but it’s always the same too.
A big, fun family event.”
As the Trick or Treat Hike comes towards
the end of the camping season,
Van Oort described it has a sort of
“last hurrah” type of event.
“People start winterizing their
campers and we do the same with our
stuff right afterwards. It’s a nice way
to end the year with a huge camping
event,” Van Oort said.
Join in the fun and take a hike
through Oak Grove Park with family
and friends. There is no need to fear
the woods on this hike. The end result
will simply be a big smile and a bag
full of Halloween candy. F

You may reserve a site for yourself
and one other site. Calls will be
taken until full. Campers will receive
Friday and Saturday night free
camping in exchange for enough
candy/goodies for 700 children.

Fall is officially here, and it’s time
for a change of décor and of
flavors.
It’s time to embrace one of fall’s
symbols. It’s time for pumpkins.
Hawk Valley Garden agrees.
Located just east of Spencer, IA,
Hawk Valley Garden is ready to help
you embrace the fall season. They
have been open for the season since
Labor Day and their crop has been
one they are proud of this year.
“We are right in the middle of the
season and it’s been a really great year
for us. We have around 150 varieties
plus some more because my dad really
likes to order the weird stuff to see
how it grows and looks,” Sue Loring
said with a laugh.
The Loring family has been running
Hawk Valley Garden for 14 years now.
Over time, they’ve learned what
people like, but they are always looking
to change things up and maybe
add some new varieties.
What people might not know is that
the crop continues to change from
week to week.
“Every single week we bring out
another 20 to 30 loads of pumpkins,”
Sue said.
“Our customers know that on Saturday
mornings we have every single
pumpkin under the sun — every color,
stripe and wart you could want.”
They have pie pumpkins, jack-olanterns,
heirloom pumpkins, small
pumpkins and so much more.
They also have varieties of winter
and summer squash, Indian corn,
bales of straw and all the stuff that
goes with fall.
One of their specialties is painted
pumpkins.
“I went to college for art and my
daughter and I love to paint. I guess,
that’s one of our huge things and large
draws is the painted pumpkins,” Sue
said.
“We do favorite teams, faces and all
kinds of special orders. We try to have
about 40-50 painted pumpkins in our
little shop every weekend.”
After 14 years, the Lorings admit to
wondering about how much longer
they are going to be able to haul in
pumpkins, but Sue says she can’t
imagine her fall being any different.
“This year we questioned because
my dad is getting older, but we really

love it. I couldn’t imagine not doing
it,” Sue said. “Everything is set up and
there are pumpkins everywhere. This
is my yard. This is us. This is who we
are — the crazy pumpkin people.”
It’s not just the pumpkins that keep
the Lorings running Hawk Valley Garden
year after year. It’s the people.
“We’ve met a lot of nice people and
some of them turn into friends that
we talk to throughout the year. I’ve
got to know specific people and what
they like and what they want,” Sue
said. “It’s all about appreciating your
customers.” F

around the ferris wheel and
another ride on the carousel.
Only this time, instead of summer
attire, the children will likely be
dressed up as superheroes, ghosts or
goblins, princesses and ballerinas.
The 5th Annual Fall Fest Children’s
Carnival will be held Saturday, Oct.
8 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Roof
Garden and Arnolds Park Amusement
Park. Weather permitting the rides in
the lower park will be open.
“This is a really fun event that is free
and gets everyone in the Halloween
mood,” said Kara Matheson, events
coordinator for the Iowa Great Lakes
Chamber of Commerce.
Various chamber businesses will set
up inside the Roof Garden with a variety
of games, activities and crafts as
well as prize and candy giveaways.
“As of now there are 15 for sure and
I’m waiting to hear back from a few
more,” Matheson said. “It gives our
members a way to gain exposure and
engage directly with the community.”
Ingvall Real Estate Team will be
hosting the popular cookie decorating
station once again.
The Dickinson County Nature
Center is putting together a “snake
pit and neverending tunnel,” which
Matheson said she is very curious
to see. KUOO will be pumping the
Roof Garden full of Halloween tunes
while families try their hand at bean
bag toss with Farmers Insurance or
perhaps Plinko with Citizens Community
Credit Union.
Oak Hill Marina is sponsoring and
judging the costume contest that will
begin at noon.
Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire & Rescue
will also have a fire truck on hand for
children to check out up close and
personal.
Bring all the little ghouls, goblins,
ghosts, superheroes and princesses in
your family for this year’s Fall Fest in
Arnolds Park. Boogie to the Monster
Mash and load up on candy as everyone
celebrates the oncoming Halloween
season.
“It’s such a great community event
that is fun and free for the whole family
and great way to celebrate Halloween,”
Matheson said.
A final ride on the ferris wheel is an
added bonus that will be hard to pass
up. Look out over the water as the season
begins its colorful changes in the
Iowa Great Lakes. F
