Research/Scholarship
I lead the Department of Neighbourhood Change and Housing at the OTB Research Institute for the Built
Environment, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. With the housing market at its centre,
my group seeks to better understand housing market dynamics, deprivation, mobility, segregation and
how alone or together they influence places. Neighbourhoods are at the centre of our interest, with
specific attention for neighbourhood change, neighbourhood effects, selective mobility into and out of
neighbourhoods, and urban renewal.
I am interested in the fields of Population, Urban, and Economic Geography: residential mobility and
migration; neighbourhood effects; urban and neighbourhood change; segregation; housing market
behaviour and housing choice; population and household change; geography of labour markets; spatial
mismatch of workers and employment opportunities; self-organisation of citizens; social innovation and
the use of social media and ICT. I have a special interest in the causes and consequences of both
residential mobility and migration (why do people move residence and what are the consequences of
moving for the housing, household and labour career?). My research is of an international and
interdisciplinary nature. I have research projects in the UK, The Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, and
Estonia.
