The Cayman Scholarships Recipients
Directory is designed to showcase the
successes of the students of the Cayman
Islands. It is a tool to motivate and inspire
students at high school, university and
postgraduate levels to pursue their goals
and dreams, and learn from their peers.
Maybe most importantly, we want them
to understand what it takes to stand
out from the crowd; prove that they too
stand a chance of being a recipient if they
commit to working hard.
The scholarship recipients featured in this
directory, all have something in common-they have all earned their awards. Their
quest for educational excellence, ambition and sense of social responsibility, have been
the fundamental factors that have influenced the scholarship committees.
Each of our advertisers has shared with us the winning attributes of their recipients.
Wannabe scholars need to take note of the reasons why these recipients were chosen.
On page 13, parents need to check out the details regarding the new Fidelity Prepaid
Visa Card. Designed to relieve parents of the stress of wiring money overseas, they can
now pre-load the card with funds in advance and monitor their child’s expenditure.
This could prove to be a life saver for parents monitoring their kid’s expenses.
On page 20, the Cayman Islands Yellow Pages summer intern, Stefan Ebanks, reveals
his experiences as a recipient of numerous scholarships. Having personally worked
with Stefan during the summer months, I am impressed by his professionalism and
determination to succeed in life.
Thank you to the organisations that have supported this directory and continue to
invest in the further education of local students. By awarding these scholarships, they
lighten the financial burden on students and their families, which allows students to
focus on the most important aspect of college/university – learning.
For students keen to apply for a scholarship, look out for the Cayman Scholarships
Directory publishing in March 2017. This will highlight all of scholarships available in
Cayman plus advice and tips on making your application dazzle.
Adam Barrie Scholarship Questions 2016
Mourant Ozannes 2015 Scholarship Recipient, Adam Barrie.
How did you settle on Law as a career?
I developed an interest in pursuing a
career in law during the final years of
my undergraduate degree in politics.
Focusing on comparative politics
and international relations inspired
me to learn more about the practical
application of rules and regulations in
society.
How has the Chantal Whittaker
Scholarship Award helped you to
pursue your studies?
The Chantal Whittaker scholarship has
provided me with financial aid to cover
the costs of my legal tuition fees as well
as a living allowance during my time at
university. I am so grateful to Mourant
Ozannes for giving me the opportunity
to pursue my legal education. Knowing
that I have the support of the firm
continuously motivates me to push
myself academically and to work to my
best ability. It feels great to be part of a
firm that provides support such as this.
What are the expectations of you by the
Mourant Ozannes management team?
I am expected to maintain a 2:1 grade
average throughout my studies and to
work as an intern during the summer.
Having now completed my first two
years of studies, I’m being given
more challenging work and greater
responsibility that will help me to further
develop my legal knowledge.
You’ve just completed a 2-year Masters
Conversion Law Degree and are now
about to begin your Legal Practice
Course. What have you enjoyed the
most about your studies so far?
I enjoy having the opportunity to learn
from top legal academics who are
extremely passionate and interested
about the subjects they teach. The ability
to engage in debates through seminars
with professors and classmates motivates
me to be constantly engaged in the class
material.
Can you describe your experience as an
intern at Mourant Ozannes?
My experience as a Summer Intern at
Mourant Ozannes provided me with
a first hand view of what it is like to
work in a leading offshore law firm. I
was placed in the Corporate & Funds
department where I had the opportunity
to learn about the role that offshore
jurisdictions, such as Cayman, have as
international financial centres. Through
discussions with various colleagues I
grasped a valuable understanding of the
basic principles of formation, structuring,
and regulation of investment funds.
What plans do you have after the
completion of your LPC? Is there any
particular area of Law that you would
like to focus on?
In September 2017 I plan to begin my
Articled Clerkship at Mourant Ozannes.
I hope to subsequently qualify as a
Cayman Islands Attorney. I look forward
to gaining experience in other practice
areas, such as Insolvency & Restructuring
and Litigation services.
In your opinion, why do you think
Mourant Ozannes selected you to be a
scholarship recipient? What made you
stand out?
I think that from the beginning of
the internship I demonstrated to my
colleagues that I was very interested
and motivated to learn as much as I
could during the time I was at Mourant
Ozannes. Along with my experience at
the firm, my academic record and extracurricular
activities helped provide the
credentials that the firm wanted for a
successful scholarship candidate.
What advice do you have for students
who are considering applying for a
scholarship?
Focus on achieving a strong academic
performance. Aim to be as well rounded
as possible by participating in various
extracurricular activities and summer
jobs. The ability to demonstrate to an
interviewer that you’re truly interested
in the business operations of the firm,
and motivated to provide a positive
contribution to its growth, will make you
stand out as an applicant.

Q&A with BUTTERFIELD Scholarship
RECIPIENT: Sean Whewell
receive so much in my life; a loving family and a great education
from primary school all the way until the end of high school. I
tell myself that I have no excuse not to try and give of my best,
because so many other young people my age don’t have the great
opportunities and support I have been given.
Winner of the 2016 Butterfield scholarship, Sean Whewell, shares
his insights with us and advice for potential scholars, on what it
takes to be a successful candidate:
Where and what are you currently studying?
I will be attending Durham University in the UK, studying marketing.
Aside from a degree, what do you hope to gain from your
college/university experience?
Apart from my academic life at university, I hope to make lifelong
friendships, and participate in several extracurricular activities
both within the university and also the wider community. In
particular, I am hoping to play football on the university team. I
believe that university life can offer students so much more beyond
academics, and that sometimes you can learn as much, if not more,
outside the classroom from the people around you. To that end,
I hope to learn more about myself, those around me, and those
invaluable life lessons that I’ll take with me after I graduate.
When will you graduate?
June 2020
Sean Whewell
What are your future career goals?
I’m not sure yet exactly what I want to do in the future. However,
I am interested in business and marketing, and in particular am
thinking of sports tourism marketing as a potential career.
You are obviously a talented student; what motivates you to be
a good learner and to put forth your best effort?
What motivates me is the simple fact that I’ve been so blessed to
What does it mean to be a Butterfield scholarship recipient?
It is a great privilege to have been chosen by Butterfield
as a Scholarship Recipient. It means, of course, a level of
achievement, but beyond that it means responsibility. A
responsibility towards those who chose me to give all of myself
in everything I do at university, to make the very most of the
funding I’ve been given, and to fulfill the faith Butterfield has
shown in me.
What are the expectations of you by the Butterfield
management team?
I´m conscious that I´ll be representing not only myself but
Butterfield and Cayman in everything that I do, so I´m expected
to give maximum effort at all times. Also, upon graduation, to
bring back the skills and experience that I have gained whilst
at university, to make a positive ongoing contribution to the
Caymanian community.
In your opinion, why do you think Butterfield selected you to
be their scholarship recipient 2016? What made you stand out?
I think you can never really know exactly what an individual
interviewer or an interview panel is looking for specifically, and
so you just have to be yourself. If you be yourself throughout
the process, then you’ll naturally stand out for who you are. Of
course, academic ability, leadership potential and also being
involved in extracurricular activities are all important as well, but
I’d say staying true to yourself is the most important thing.
What advice can you give to students applying for
scholarships?
To go for it if you qualify, give maximum effort every step of the
way, and most importantly just be yourself.
Preparations before
LEAVING HOME
By Lisa Beauchamp
It’s time to finally spread your winds and fly the nest, pack your
bags and head overseas on a new adventure.
You’ve been awarded a scholarship that enables you to study
abroad, so now begins the next all-important step in your life.
Sounds exciting, but it vcan be daunting at the same time.
Suddenly the reality of being on your own for the first time,
no mum to cook your dinner and prepare your breakfast, no
sibling to argue with, is very real indeed.
It’s advisable to adopt the mindset of “these will be the best
years of my life” and consider all of the good times ahead, and
they will surely outweigh the bad times.
Putting aside the insecurities and anticipation, it’s best to be
prepared in advance to avoid disappointment and ensure a
smooth transition.
Here are some tips on how to be prepared:
Budget – first and foremost, you must know how much money
you have available to use for living expenses. Estimate how long
this will last. Learn to keep track of what you spend in order to
avoid running out. You may need to consider taking on a part
time job in order to cover all of your expenses.
Cooking – a poor diet will affect your performance in class as
well as your waistline. Avoid skipping meals and eating junk
food. Try to include fruit and vegetables in your daily eating
routine.
Cleaning – keeping your own personal living area clean is
important. Make time to vacuum and sanitize regularly.
Laundry – use the college/university laundry facilities, or the
services of a local Laundromat. Make sure you wash your
clothes regularly. Take your personal hygiene and cleanliness
seriously.
Adjusting to a roommate – this could be the first time that
you’ve shared a room or an apartment with another person
of your age. You need to adjust to their habits and learn to get
along. Be tolerant during this stage of adjustment. Who knows,
you may become life long friends.
Make it home – take some reminders of home with you –
photos and pictures. Avoid taking valuable keepsakes and
expensive jewellery with you.
Study routine – you must be self disciplined and self motivated
to establish a routine that allows you to concentrate and study
without interruptions. Be serious, if you are a scholarship
recipient, there are expectations of your performance and
grades.
Keeping in touch - there is no reason why you can’t
communicate on a regular basis with your parents, siblings and
friends back home. Make sure you allocate time each week to
touch base with your family and friends via social media, email
or phone.
It’s time to grow up and be responsible for your own personal
wellbeing and fend for yourself. You have the world at your feet;
spend the next few years exploring life. Enjoy!

Getting started
how to select a scholarship
By Lisa Beauchamp
Depending on the institution/business/trust providing the scholarship, they can take
various forms. The scholarship can be aimed at high achievers with proven academic
abilities within their field. Or they can provide financial assistance to those students who
are in most need. Some scholarships take both merit and need into consideration.
Ask yourself the following questions before you start searching for a suitable
scholarship:
• What are my goals and ambitions?
• What do I love to do?
• What do I hope to accomplish with my life?
• In my current position, what options are available to me?
• Which colleges and universities offer the areas of study that will help me to achieve my
goals?
• What financial assistance do I need? (if any)
• Which scholarships are available at the educational institutions where I wish to study?
• Which scholarships am I eligible to apply for?
• Which company in the Cayman Islands offers me the best scholarship opportunity to
pursue my goals and dream career?
• How can I impress the companies who I apply to for a scholarship?
• What qualities and skills do I possess that will me stand out during the selection
process?
It’s crucial to ask yourself these questions and focus on your goals, opportunities,
completing the applications and most of all – your studies.
Wait until March 2017 and utilize the content in the Cayman Scholarships Directory to
Life as a scholar
By Stefan Ebanks
Hi, there, I’m Stefan Ebanks, and I’m
proud to be the first ‘Ritz-Carlton ‘
scholarship recipient graduated from
Johnson and Wales University Magma
Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in Culinary
Arts & Food Service Management. I
also graduated with a minor in Tour
Management and Nutrition, in 2014. I
have since gone on to pursue my Master’s
in International Tourism Management at
the University of Surrey. I’m anticipating
to graduate with distinction in September
2016.
I’d like to share my experience with
students and potential scholars to reveal
what can be achieved through hard work
and commitment.
Future Aspiration
My biggest aspiration is to become
a CEO of a hospitality company in
the NASDAQ 100. The tourism and
hospitality industry is one of the fastestgrowing
industries (Sharma et al., 2016),
offering a broad range of interesting areas
to work within. Having almost completed
my Master’s, I can now appreciate the
epistemological and social science
aspects of the industry.
Scholarships Awarded
As well as being the first recipient
of the Ritz-Carlton Scholarship in
2011, I have been blessed to have won
Ministry of Tourism, Caribbean Tourism
Organization (CTO), Educational
Council Overseas, and Johnson & Wales
Presidential Academic Scholarships over
his university journey of five years.
Internship at DOT
During my internship at the Cayman
Islands Department of Tourism (DOT)
from June til August 2015, the experience
allowed me to connect together practical
and ideologies taught to me at university.
This enabled me to see tourism as
an everyday activity that everyone
participates in, on a daily basis; rather
than a discrete activity associated with
the word “vacation.” The expectations
on me were demanding but extremely
rewarding. I was expected to play vital
roles on future initiatives commissioned
by departmental leads, which would
consist of activities such as - data
analysis, literature reviews, note taking in
meetings and focus groups, assisting in
writing sections of reports. In addition, I
gained an understanding of the direction
both the Ministry of Tourism and
Transport and Department of Tourism
wanted to take the country (i.e. cruise
tourism and pink tourism). Lastly, the
internship provided an opportunity
to interact with leading hospitality
and tourism industry partners; thus,
giving me a holistic appreciation for
the industries on macro-economic and
micro-economic aspects.
Culture Shock
“Culture; differentiate one societal group
from another by identification beliefs,
Stefan Ebanks
behaviours, language, traditions, Art,
fashion styles, food, religion, politics, and
economic systems”. Believe me, living
in foreign country can be difficult for
most! However, for me, I embraced the
kaleidoscope of experiences as a way to
discover who I am as an individual.
Budgeting
As a young man growing up, I always
knew the value of money. As such,
these principles have translated into
my everyday life. For first time overseas
scholars, budgeting can be daunting, so
here are some tips:
- Purchase second hand text books (they
can be half the price of new ones)
-Purchase student transportation passes
-Avoid impulse buying
-Buy food in bulk (if possible)
-Cook in bulk and freeze
-Look for student discount activities for
entertainment
Words of advice
To all scholars and young professionals -
Don’t sell an idea you love. Dare to explore
beyond this paradise we call home. Life is
all about people, so the relationships you
build will be a great asset.
