WELCOME
Kate & Becky
Welcome to the October issue. We really hope that you all had a great
summer!
Over the last couple of months, we have been sent some interesting
community articles which are featured in this month’s issue.
We recently went to visit the Patel family who run the Nisa store in
Shawclough as they are celebrating 25 years in business, having originally
purchased the shop in 1991. The shop is now run by Dharmendra Patel (or
Danny as he’s more commonly known) and his wife Sunita and is a hub of
the local community offering a wide range of provisions as well as services
all of which are listed on pages 28 and 29.
Gary Heywood-Everett continues his ‘From the Archives’ features with an
article about James Duckworth who ran a chain of grocery stores in
Rochdale, opening his first shop on Oldham Road in 1868 and soon moving
onto wholesale trade.
On Sunday 13th November, Whitworth residents young and old will gather
to remember those lost or injured during times of conflict. The
commemorations will begin with a procession which will leave from the
former Town Council Offices at 10.20am – full details on page 36.
Keep your copy of Streetwise handy throughout the month as the What’s
On Pages are packed with local events taking place in the next few weeks.
Thanks to all the kind comments we have received over the summer about
the magazines – it is clear that Streetwise is well received by local residents
and is considered to be the only community magazine in the area.
Until next month……
STUDENTS SPRUCE UP GARDEN AT STORE
A popular store is looking blooming lovely when customers arrive, thanks to the
efforts of students from Hopwood Hall College.
For after a real community effort, United Carpets and Beds in St Mary’s Way,
Union Street, now boasts new garden planting at the front entrance.
Store franchisee Janis Baklanow and her staff were delighted when Rochdale
in Business came up with the idea of recruiting the students to help.
She said: “We’ve been planning to put in some nice plants at the front of the
store, but we’ve been too busy with our customers to get
round to it.
“The Hopwood Hall students came along and worked really
hard, digging everything over and putting in lots of plants.”
Janis took over the store earlier this year, and she’s finding
a keen market for her flooring and beds among local people
keen to get good value and quality products. She stocks a
wide range of carpets, vinyls, laminates and wood floor,
and beds with mattresses from the British Mattress
company.
Her store is one of almost 60 United Carpets across the
North and Midlands, but she says because she is a
franchisee she’s able to combine the buying power of a
large company – ensuring for good deals - with a friendly
family approach.
“We get a lot of local people through our doors, and
we’ve been excited to see how nice the town looks because
of the Rochdale in Bloom competition,” she said.
“It’s nice that we’ve been able to get the front of the store
looking lovely to match the rest of the town.”
Now that Autumn is on the way, Janis and her staff – who
are renowned in the town for their excellent customer service
- are getting ready for a busy time.
“This is the time of year when people often decide to smarten
up their homes, and we’re expecting lots of customers to come
in for advice and great deals,” she said.
“We’ve years of experience between us, and we’re always
ready to help people make what can be an important purchase
that will enhance their homes for years to come.”
SHAWCLOUGH STORE CELEBRATES
25 YEARS IN BUSINESS
Dharmendra Patel (commonly known as Danny) and his family have been running the
Shawclough store for 25 years since they purchased it in 1991. At that time, Danny’s
parents were involved in running the business but have retired in recent years with Danny
and his wife, Sunita, running the store together along with help from their son, Nikul.
The family are well connected in the local community and are well known by many Shawclough residents who pop into
the convenience store for their essential items as well as to have a friendly chat with Danny and his wife! Danny is also
a Governor at Falinge School.
Over the years, the store has seen many changes with three refurbishments and for 14 years, Danny was postmaster
until this was removed from the store three years ago.
This store is quite unique due to the fact that the same family have
been running it for so many years and serving the residents of
Shawclough and Healey. It’s a real hub of the community which is
great to see.
Congratulations to the Patel family and here’s to the next 25 years with
the next generation of the family taking over!
From the
archives
From the archives -
James Duckworth
and his grocery stores.
Known throughout the townas Jimmy Ducks, a chain of grocery shops was started by a
man of humble beginnings whose shops provided much service and many good memories
for the people of Rochdale. James Duckworth was born in 1840 near Haslingden, the son
of a poor weaver who found work in Rochdale and whose mother, begging for food, carried
him as a baby over Ashworth Moor. His father died when he was six years old and by
eleven he was working as a half-timer calico weaver for 18 pence a week.
In his early 20’s James wanted to become a Methodist Minister but as his wife frowned on the idea he settled
for a Town Missionary position in Heywood on a salary of £60 a year. His health soon broke downhowever,
and on doctor’s advice he took to the outdoor life, selling tea door-to-door in two and four ounce bags. These
sold well and with increased profits he had enough capital to open his first shop at 15 Oldham Road in 1868
although neither he nor his wife knew how to dress a window. Business prospered and he opened village
shopsaround Rochdale, undercutting town prices by as much as seven per cent.
Buying a small warehouse in Whitehall Street,
Rochdale, Duckworth began to operate a wholesale
trade too, and his business grew so fast with more shops
springing up throughout the area, that it necessitated a
second warehouse onJohn Street (1878), then a third in
Water Street three years later. In 1895, the business
became a Limited Company, and in 1900, the company
consolidated premises in a move to a four-storey
warehouse on Oldham Road.
Meanwhile James Duckworthbecame a Rochdale
counsellor in 1887 and held the office of mayor from
1891-1893, again from 1901-1903 and for a third time
1910-1911. He was a Magistrate for both Rochdale
Borough and Lancashire County from March 1893 and
served both Middleton and Stockport as a Member of
Parliament. In 1908 he was knighted for his services to
Liberalism and to business.
In 1905, James Duckworth, focussing on his political career,
retired as chairman and managing director of his company
although retaining his seat on the board. On retirement, he
held a party for his workforce at the Town Hall, announcing a
£2,000 benevolent fund for ill or injured employees or for those
forced to retire through old age. James Duckworth died on 1st
January 1915, aged 74, leaving six children from his first
marriage and two from his second.
By 1916 there were 387 grocer’s shops in Rochdale, the
Pioneers had 49 and James Duckworth had 43,publicising
themselves as ‘a shop not far from your house.’ Sir James
Duckworth was assisted for many years in management by
his only son, Mr. James Duckworth, J.P. who died suddenly
in 1937, the family continuing to run the company with grandsons Geoffrey,
Alan and Roger.
In 1955 Wright's Biscuits Ltd bought the family out but kept the local name. Wrights had a vision in the
1960’s for a super emporium on the land occupied by the Butts Mill at the bottom of Drake Street and although
the plans were enthusiastically approved by the town’s Planning and Buildings Sub-committee, nothing was
built and the brand’s fortunes began to decline.
In 1969, as part of a cost-cutting exercise, the Oldham Road offices and warehouse - for so many years
thecentre of Jimmy Duck’s activities - was closed down, at that time only 17 shops remaining under the
Duckworth name. The last traces of a once-great grocery name in Rochdale disappeared in 1975 when the
Oldham Road premises were demolished.
If you have any memories of James Duckworth Ltd., I’d be delighted to hear from you and add
them to a growing Rochdale archive on the subject. Please contact Gary Heywood-Everett at
garyheywoodeverett@yahoo.co.uk or leave your memories at 07745201263.
Vanilla Poached Pears
Sometimes simplicity rules. The juicy white flesh
of the pear is sheer heaven when eaten at perfect
ripeness. This recipe calls for Rocha Pears but
if you find when buying them they are hard
and aren’t ripe, just choose a different variety
instead.
300g Caster Sugar
500ml Water
250ml Dry White Wine
1 Vanilla Pod – Split
1 Lemon – Cut in Half
1 Stick of Cinnamon
6 Rocha Pears –
Peeled and Cored but keep stalks attached
150g Mascarpone Cheese
Fresh Mint
Vanilla ice cream
METHOD
1.Place the sugar, water, wine, vanilla, lemon and
cinnamon in a pan and bring to the boil.
2. Place in the pears upright, cover and poach very gently
until tender – approx 25 minutes.
3. Leave to cool in the syrup then place in the fridge.
4. When ready to serve – take each pear and fill the hole,
where you have removed the core, with the mascarpone.
5. Place the pears on a serving plate, scatter with fresh
mint and a drizzle of the cooking liquor and a scoop of ice
cream if desired.
CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
DO NOT MAKE IT EASY FOR BURGLARS AND VEHICLE THIEVES -
YOU MAY NOT BE INSURED IF YOUR HOME OR VEHICLE DOORS
AND WINDOWS WERE LEFT UNLOCKED
Please make security to your home and vehicle
paramount to you. Begin a security regime and stick to it.
Lock your windows and doors, place keys and valuable
out of reach and out of sight
Don’t become lapse please.
Do not leave keys in your doors as this will encourage
thieves to damage your door and use the keys to gain
entry into your home.
Keep keys and valuables hidden from view at all times
and take upstairs with you each night before you retire.
Opportunistic thieves will try your front and back doors
looking for easy ways to get in and steal from you.
Ensure your vehicle is locked at all times and property is
either removed or hidden from view
You know what fits and what doesn’t fit in your vicinity, report anything
or anyone acting suspiciously and think security at all times, make it
difficult for them.
BURGLARIES
The strategic action plans put into place have significantly reduced
burglaries in your area and we are continuing with hi-vis patrols.
One property however did leave an insecure window which was sadly
entered by thieves
VEHICLE CRIME
We continue to work closely with CCTV operators, partner agencies
and local residents in the hot spot areas identified.
CCTV footage continues to be a fabulous tool in the fight against
vehicle and burglary crime and is very much welcomed and
appreciated by residents, thank you.
DOMESTIC BURGLARY
There have been five cases of Domestic Burglary in
the last month. These were on Augusta Close,
Followfield Drive, Moorlands Children’s Home on
Nick Road Lane and two cases on Dewhirst
Road.
There has also been one case of attempted
Domestic Burglary in the last month. This
was on Lowerfold Way.
VEHICLE CRIME
There have recently been nine cases of vehicle crime. This also includes
criminal damage to vehicles.
There have been seven cases of theft from a vehicle on Heights Lane,
Hollowbrook Way, Fallowfield Drive, Hill Stone Avenue, Hillkirk Drive
and Lowerfield Way.
There have also been two cases of theft of a vehicle. Unknown Offenders
stole a vehicle by unknown means on Newark Road, causing damage
and then leaving it on Tesco’s car park, Rochdale. There was also
another vehicle stolen on Heald Drive where two opportunistic thieves
approved an unsecure vehicle and conducted a search. They proceeded
to use a key for it and drive off, colliding with a parked vehicle on Heald
Close and made good their escape on foot.
THE SYKE AND HEALEY PACT MEETINGS ARE HELD EVERY THREE
MONTHS. The date of the next meeting is
Thursday 8th December from 6.30pm at Syke Methodist Church, Syke
Road, Rochdale, OL12 9TF.
This is a good chance for you to let us know what’s going on in your
area and let us know what we can do to help. Please come do along
and meet us.
Whitworth 2016 Remembrance Sunday commemorations
On Sunday 13 November, Whitworth residents young and old will gather to remember those lost and
injured during times of conflict. The town’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations will begin with the
Remembrance Sunday procession, which will leave as usual from opposite the former Town Council Offices
(just north of the corner of Market Street and Tong Lane) at 10.20am; the processional route will be the
subject of a road closure order for this short period of time and drivers are advised to avoid the area. The
procession will be led by Whitworth’s Mayor, Councillor Mrs Madeline De Souza, who will be supported by
the Whitworth Vale and Healey Brass Band, plus the local uniformed organisations, Town, Borough and County Councillors,
representatives of the town’s schools and places of worship, Lancashire Constabulary and members of the public.
The procession will arrive at Whitworth’s Memorial Gardens in Facit at approximately 10.40am, and will be followed immediately
by a Service of Remembrance around the Cenotaph, including a two-minute silence at 11am. The service will be led by the Mayoral
Chaplain, Rev Father Frank Thorpe of St Anselm’s RC Church.
Following the Service of Remembrance, everyone is invited to cross the road for light, warm refreshments at The Riverside (Civic
Hall).
For more information on this year’s commemorations, please contact Melanie Hearn, Town Clerk, on 01706 852018
