Side Trips
I
was making my way to my usual spot in the
bleachers for Friday night’s high school football
game when I met another mom headed
the opposite direction.
She greeted me, then
added, “Have enough
layers there?”
I sure hoped I did.
Friday night football
weather has been remarkable
this year, but
I always come prepared.
The first week, way back
in August, actually felt
the chilliest to me, and
that was because of the
wind. Every game since
has been really nice —
MYRNA
WAGNER
jacket required, but no rain and little wind.
Friday’s weather felt a lot more like typical
fall, and with the wind blowing, I dressed in
layers, and carried in a few more. I don’t do
well in cold weather, especially when you
aren’t moving, so in addition to a long-sleeve
shirt, sweater and winter coat, I wore two pairs
of socks, boots, and an ear band. I brought a
heavy knit scarf, my thickest mittens and a
blanket. And hand warmers.
I paced myself and didn’t need the hand
warmers until after the band’s halftime performance.
Why is that the second half always feel
longer than the first?
When the mom I had met as I arrived returned
to her seat just in front of me, I realized
she had been admiring my armload of extras.
She hadn’t been headed to the concession
stand, but to the parking lot to retrieve a heavy
coat and blanket from her own car. It’s good to
be prepared.
Here’s to hoping the weather holds for a
couple more weeks.
RYLAN HOWE | STAFF WRITER
Former naturalist introduces exhibit at Nature Center
Barbara Tagami was a naturalist
in Dickinson County for many
years. This fall she’s back at the
nature center with several works of
art on display at in the eARTh exhibit
area at the Dickinson County Nature
Center.
The exhibit will be up through the
end of December and features a variety
of photos, prints, origami and
more.
“I call myself an eclectic nature artist,”
Tagami said. “I was a naturalist
for this county for 16 years. Nature
has always been part of my life and
I feel that nature is something that
touches everyone, so what I do is take
things that I find in nature and create
with them.”
Rocks collected can be crushed and
ground down to produce pigment,
which Tagami uses with the addition
of a polymer gel to create vivid colors.
Prints are done on hand-made paper.
Origami resembles fish, turtles and
other animals.
A common theme throughout the
exhibit is fish. Tagami characterizes
herself as an avid fisherwoman and
that influence is clearly scene in the
work on display.
“This is what I do to collect myself
and get back in touch with the real
world. The real world being the natural
world,” Tagami said. “All too often
we get caught up being anxious about
Art
different things in our life and when
you go fishing or do something in nature,
even if it’s something like taking
a hike and sitting, taking the beauty of
nature, that’s inspiring. So that’s what
I do and it’s so much fun.”
Tagami’s love of fishing prompted
her to do fish printing. Gyotaku is a
traditional Japanese method of printing
fish dating back to the 1800s. It is
from
nature
thought to have been a way for fishermen
to record their catches, as well as
a scientific method of identifying fish
species.
It also evolved into an art form in
and of itself, which Tagami really enjoys.
Origami is an art form of folding
paper into various forms. It is something
Tagami’s mom taught her and
something she enjoys teaching to
children now.
“It’s a great way to get kids into
doing art as well as improving their
dexterity and eye-hand coordinaton,”
Tagami said.
In fact, Tagami will be teaching two
classes, one on origami for children
and one on fish printing for adults,
in conjunction with the exhibit at the
nature center.
As for her own exhibit, Tagami
hopes it brings a smile to anyone who
stops to check it out and as well as an
appreciation of how, in so many ways,
nature inspires art in all of us. F
Sioux Center to host Women’s Expo Oct. 21-22
Sioux Center is setting aside one
weekend in October and devoting
it all to women.
For the seventh year, the Sioux
Center Chamber of Commerce will
be hosting its Women’s Expo on Oct.
21-22.
“It is a great two days of shopping,
fun and entertainment that we have
designed just for women of all ages,”
said Heather Rozeboom, the event
coordinator with the Sioux Center
Chamber of Commerce.
The event will feature 40 vendors,
the most that can fit in the space, and
there is a wide range of options.
“We have everything including quite
a few boutiques this year, which is a
great trend. There will be lots of clothing,
shoes and accessories with those,”
Rozeboom said. “We’ll also have vendors
selling makeup, doing hair and
some health booths. We have some
interior decorating places, a booth
that is all purses so that’s fun and
some booths with items for babies.”
The event kicks off on Friday night,
Oct. 21, with the premiere of all the
all about
Women
vendors and plenty of time for some
shopping.
“Then after that we are inviting
everyone to The Ridge for a wine
tasting and a live band. The first two
hundred women will receive a free
wine glass and there will be wine
vendors who are coming,” Rozeboom
said. “The women will be able to taste
and purchase wine to drink there or
take home. The band is from Dordt
and they will be providing live music
for us. We’re advertising it as a girl’s
night out.”
Then Saturday the event runs from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The vendors will be
there, of course, so there’ll still be
plenty of opportunity to get in some
shopping, but there are going to be
some other special events as well.
At 10 a.m. B. Fierce Boutique, Maurices
and Simply Jade Boutique will be
hosting a fall fashion show.
“It’s so neat to see all the different
styles of clothing for all different ages
and shapes. I know they are really excited
for the show as well,” Rozeboom
said.
Later that morning at 11 a.m., on
their main stage, there will be a cooking
demonstration with Chef Paul
from Hy-Vee in Sioux Center.
“This is a brand new thing we are
doing this year and we are really excited
for this Cooking with Chef Paul
show,” Rozeboom said.
Breakfast and lunch will be available
for purchase and is being provided
by the Family Crisis Center as
a fundraiser. Then at 12:30 p.m. the
keynote speaker will take the stage.
Jennifer Dukes Lee is this year’s keynote
speaker.
“She’s a local gal who lived in Inwood.
She’s a Christian author who
has had a couple of widely known
books come out. She is a really inspirational
Christian author,” Rozeboom
said. “I am hoping this will be really
inspirational and I’m really excited to
have her come and speak.”
Throughout both Friday and Saturday,
they will be giving away door
prizes and some grand prizes.
“This is my favorite event that we
do as a Chamber every year. You see
some of the same people come back
with their moms and their grandmas
every year and then you get to meet
new people, too,” Rozeboom said. F
KATE HARLOW | STAFF WRITER
How ’bout them
There’s nothing that says fall quite
like apples picked right off the
tree.
Fall is a time for apples in school
lunch boxes, baked into pies and
cakes and enjoyed as an ingredient in
warm, cozy dinners.
That nip in the air means it’s apple
time.
And at Ocheda Orchard many of
the apples are ripe and there’s still
some waiting to be picked.
“It’s been a good season. We have
a big crop and the quality of the crop
is really good,” orchard owner Chuck
Nystrom said. “Traffic has been a tad
bit slower but it seems to be picking
up now.”
Ocheda Orchard, sitting just a
stone’s throw from Worthington, MN,
has grown to a 33-acre farm with at
least 5,000 apple trees — more likely
there are closer to 7,000, but they
haven’t counted in a couple of years.
And while they have thousands of
varieties of apples growing in the orchard,
they have 15 varieties that they
sell commercially to the public.
When people come to Ocheda
Orchard they can stop in their shop
and purchase apples that have already
been picked by the orchard’s employees
or people can pick their very own
apples.
Right now, the major variety that is
ripe and ready for eating is the Honeycrisp.
“The big one that everyone is coming
in for now is HoneyCrisp, and
we’ve got a really good crop of them
this year,” Nystrom said.
“The B-51 is the other really hot
commodity. It’s kind of an unknown
for a lot of people but every year more
apples ?
Ocheda Orchard has apples galore, pumpkins and more
people learn about it.”
Another apple that is causing a lot
of buzz along with the Honeycrisps is
the orchard’s very own experimental
apple.
The B-51 is ready for picking. And,
my, is it yummy.
The patented B-51 came from the
seedling of a Honeycrisp, but the
other parent is a mystery as it was
open pollinated.
The rights to commercially produce
this hot apple was purchased by
Chelan Fresh and will be marketed
to grocers within the next few years as
the SugarBee.
Others varieties that might also
tickle your taste buds and are ready for
eating are Haralson, Zestar, Cortland,
SweeTango, Chestnut, Monark, Early
McIntosh, Williams Pride, and Oriole,
Regents and Snowsweet.
In addition to being able to pick
apples, people can also pick a number
of other fun fall vegetables while they
are at Ocheda Orchard.
“We have pick your own pumpkins
and pick your own squash, and we
also have decorative gourds,” Nystrom
said. In addition to picking your
own, soon they’ll have some squash
and gourds picked and available right
in the store.
In the store, in addition to the
apples, they also sell frozen pies, local
honey, jams, jellies and caramel.
“We get all kind of people who
come out. Lots of families with grandma
and grandpa and the grandkids
come to pick and get that experience,”
Nystrom said.
It doesn’t matter if you like sweet or
tart, Ocheda Orchard has an apple for
every taste. F
Jeremy Johnston brings unique
solo recital to Okoboji
Marimbas, maracas, cymbals,
snare drum and a little
It’s all part of a unique solo recital
coming to the Pearson Lakes Art Center
in Okoboji.
Jeremy Johnston will be taking the
stage in the Lauridsen Performing Arts
Theatre on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 7:30
p.m. to present a performance titled
“Snapshots of Modern Percussion.”
Johnston is professional percussion
performer and instructor at
Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.
He will be at the helm of the many
instruments. Vicki is part of Apple’s
computer speech preferences and will
narrate a snare drum solo.
“Jeremy will be doing a solo percussion
recital exploring current trends in
arts director Amanda Schindler said.
“It will be different. We haven’t had
anything like this recently and it exemplifies
our mission of broadening
horizons through the arts.”
Johnston has been performing
percussion recitals for about 10 years
starting in college as part of his work towards
a percussion performance major
that has since led to a master’s degree as
well as doctoral work in the field.
He still remembers the day he fell in
love with percussion.
“For some reason I went along with
my older brother when he was picking
out an instrument to play in the school
band,” Johnston said. “I saw someone
demonstrating percussion instruments
and just sat in awe. I knew that’s what
I wanted to play. Music was where my
passion was going into college and I
figured I’d come out a rock star.”
Part of the playlist for this show includes
three pieces that highlight the
“modern” in modern percussion.
“Three of the pieces will have some
Johnston said. “The cymbal piece will
feature speaker feedback and will be
just the second performance ever for
the particular piece.”
While the performance will draw
a lot of ideas from current trends in
percussion music, an instrument that
traces its roots hundreds of years will
also be at the center of attention.
“I love playing the marimba. It has
such a big, rich sound to it and over
the past 20 years there has been a lot
of great writing and good music for
it,” Johnston said.
The marimba and many other instruments
will be brought to life in by
Jeremy Johnston. Enjoy them all and
brass quartets, brass quintets,
a trombone duet and two solos by Mr.
Music in the Gallery has been going
about once a month depending
on the time of the year and the gallery’s
schedule.
“Music in the Gallery is our way
the town of Spencer and surrounding
great opportunity to gather a group
In the past they have had a number
of local bands come and perform at
Music in the Gallery. They’ve had local
band Coelmhor as well as a duet by
Isaac Brockshus and Elizabeth Gergel.
The Music in the Gallery event always
draws a crowd.
“We’ve had anywhere from 25 to
60-plus guests attend this event. On
average, we usually see about 30 to 40
some individuals come to Music in
the Gallery,” said White.
White is very excited to hear how
this new group sounds in the gallery.
“We have a great space for all types
of music and instruments. We’re
excited to see how the brass sound
will fill the space in our gallery,” said
White. F
