A municipal worker attempts to switch off a broken fire hydrant on Tuesday while thousands of litres of water pour down High Street, eroding the already severely damaged Strand Street and
continuing onto Albany Road. When TotT left the scene it was still gushing. Municipal spokesman Cecil Mbolekwa said municipal officials had been called in by the fire department and responded
immediately. ‘We had a problem with the water hydrant, which was later fixed,’ he said
THE destruction of property at the
Marselle Stadium project led to a
special council meeting on Monday at
which councillors recommended the
municipality take legal action against
those found hampering the
const ruction.
The project, which is using an
infrastructural grant worth
R3.9-million, has been riven with
controversy. It was divided into three
parts – the building of the field, the
change rooms and stand, and the
surrounding wall.
It is the award of the contract for
the construction of the wall that some
residents have an issue with.
At a council meeting in October last
year, it was revealed that the 1 148m
boundary wall at the Marselle sports
field is costing R1 357 398, a cost per
metre of more than R1 000.
At the time, DA caucus leader Ray
Schenk asked if this price was at
building market value, and was
assured by infrastructural
development director Noluthando
Vithi that it was.
“The wall has been vandalised, so
we went to the Marselle community
Stadium strife
Municipality warns Marselle vandals action will be taken
to speak with them and find out what
the problem is,” speaker Vivian
Maphaphu told council on Monday.
At a marathon meeting held on
April 7 at the Marselle community
hall, which went on until after 1am
the next morning, Maphaphu asked
residents to vote on how many
wanted the construction of the
stadium to continue.
According to her, not everyone
there signed the attendance register
but of the 76 that did, 61 voted for the
construction to be completed.
However, dissent was expressed by
several of those present who began
to hurl abuse and unsubstantiated
claims of corruption towards one of
the contractors, Anje Amakhosikazi,
responsible for the construction of
the wall around the development.
They claimed that an amount of
R15 000 was paid to each of the five
female members of the company by
Ndlambe Municipality – a claim the
municipality denies. This was
apparently used to compensate them
for having contributed the same
amount toward the purchase of sand,
cement and bricks required to start
the project.
Residents are demanding to see the
invoices for these items, but two of
the members of Anje Amakhosikazi
are refusing to do this until they have
discussed the matter with their
l aw y e r s .
Any delay in spending the allocated
budget will result in it being
withdrawn at the end of the
2015/2016 financial year in June.
The municipality was therefore left
to consider moving the funds to
another project and coming back to
Marselle after the dispute was
resolved.
Added to this, the main contractor,
Empumalanga Trust, is complaining
that in the first 14 days of the project
they were only able to work
one-and-a-half days, and are losing
about R10 000 per day in overheads.
At Monday’s meeting, the options
were put on the table and discussed.
ANC councillor Skura Venene said
these few people had no right to
violate the rights of others in order to

make their point.
“The leadership is weak,” Ve n e n e
said. “We should allow the law to
take its course.”
Following more discussion, it was
resolved to continue with the project
with the following caveat: that police
are informed of the damage being
done to the walls by a small number
of people, and that the community
should be encouraged to take
ownership of the project.
It was also resolved to inform the
contractor to be aware that he might
face disruptions and, in conjunction
with the police, should take
appropriate action.
CRIMEBRIEFS
HOUSE break-ins and theft have
been at the top of the
MultiSecurity incident list.
RIET RIVER BURGLARY
Last Wednesday MultiSecurit y
got a call from a resident in Riet
River who was chasing a man
who gained entry to his home
through a lounge window and
stole an iPhone. MultiSecurity
followed the suspect’s trail to the
beach going in the direction of
Oceana, but did not catch him.
KLEINEMOND STOCK THEFT
Armed suspects forced the
caretaker of a Kleinemonde farm
at gunpoint to open the premises
and slaughter the sheep. He
refused and was able to escape
after the men were distracted.
MultiSecurity and Panther Farm
Security checked the premises
but the thieves were gone with
only traces left behind where they
dragged three sheep to a vehicle
waiting on the main road.
CHURCH BREAK-IN
Last Friday burglars gained
entry to the Full Gospel Church by
smashing a window. Nothing was
stolen. SAPS opened a case of
housebreaking.
DICKINSON ROAD ROBBERY
In the early hours of Saturday,
robbers used a screwdriver to
force open the back sliding door
of a Dickinson Road home while
the residents were out. The
robbers stole two laptops,
sunglasses and a cellphone.
NEMATO SPAR TROLLEY SWIPE
On Sunday at Nemato Spar a
customer reported a trolley filled
with her groceries had been
stolen. She paid for her goods at
the till and left her trolley there to
dash back for a forgotten item.
A man was located at Madiba
Shop with the stolen groceries.
BATTERIES BURGLED
Also on Sunday afternoon,
MultiSecurity received a call from
the Sunshine Juice owner
reporting that the batteries had
been stolen from two of his
trucks parked on the premises.
him as a means to
fulfil their own
agendas, as they don’t
agree with the forum’s
order of business.
Mgece and a group
of supporters gathered
at Juaka Hall last
week in protest of
Njibana’s alleged
statements, said to
have taken place in
front of a crowd at
Mtyobo Primary
School days before.
According to the
group of women at the
protest, Njibana
allegedly made claims
that Mgece was
sleeping with the
chairman of the
business forum,
Mzwanele Sonandzi.
“He has insulted
women. What impression
is he sending to
the community?”
Business Forum for
SMMEs secretary
N t o m b e k h aya
Mgangetho asked.
“Stwiga is a selfish
leader. He thinks he
can champion
ever ything.
“Women will never
be free to be women,”
Mgece added.
Mgece, who owns a
small construction
business, denies ever
benefiting unfairly
from the forum.
“The decisions taken
in the forum does not
align with what he
wants, so he feels like
he can insult whoever
stands in his way,”
Mgangetho said.
When TotT made
contact with Njibana,
he denied the
a l l e g at i o n s .
“I have never
insulted women in my
life. This group needs
to be investigated for
their lies,” he said.
Njibana explained
that the business
forum had been an
area of contention for
some time.
“After the business
forum was
established, Sanco
moved away from it so
they could operate by
themselves. After that,
they introduced
themselves to the
municipal manager,”
Njibana said.
Thereafter the forum
had the power to
appoint certain
companies with which
to do business.
Instead of being a
controlled forum
where all SMMEs
benefited equally from
business
opportunities, Njibana
said within a matter of
time some members
benefited more.
“Some of these
businesses came to
Sanco and
complained. We then
called a meeting of all
businesses where I
explained that there
were problems,”
Njibana said.
He said at this
meeting, people came
forward complaining
that Mgece was
someone who
benefited unfairly.
“Profiles were
supposed to be
submitted before
December to get
business from Murray
and Roberts, but she
did not and still
benefited from it.
“I said we need to
develop criteria for the
forum otherwise it will
be abused. I was
making an example,”
he said.
Njibana said Mgece
wa s n ’t even present at
the meeting.
“This is nothing
more than political
play. There are people
here in Ndlambe who
want to influence the
ANC,” Njibana said.
Mgece, however,
said she never got any
work from Murray and
Roberts and that the
allegations were a
smear campaign
against her.

long and 200m at its widest
point,” he told the audience.
“I spent several months
there studying the migration
patterns of the seabirds that
nest there. We wanted to know
more about these animals,
where they breed and where
they travel for food.”
On the island there are 54
known colonies of birds,
approximately 30 breeding
species of terns, boobies and
pet rels.
His time on Tromelin Island
was aimed at observing – and
recording – the interaction
between sea-birds and
fisheries, as well as the diet of
Barau’s Petrel, the mating
patterns of the red-footed
booby and, generally, the
population structures of Indian
Ocean seabirds.
“This is important,” asser ted
Danckwerts. “For example, the
island of Reunion is unique in
many ways. It is the only island
in the world of endemic
pet rels.”
Danckwer ts’ mission is to
increase the understanding of
threatened species and to
identify the key threats faced
by seabirds while at sea.
“By looking at the birds’ diet
we can identify where it came
from, how it lives, where it
travels to and so forth,”
Danckwerts said.
He then gave an amusing
anecdote regarding him, a pole
and plastic zip-lock bags and
traversing the island searching
for seabird vomit.
“It may be sick, but it is like
treasure to researchers,” he
said.
One alarming fact when the
researchers examined the
contents of the birds stomachs
was the amount of plastic they
discovered.
“The diet is more varied than
we had at first thought,” he
said. “There was a lot of squid
rather than the fish we had
expected to find.”
Another interesting
discovery was in the mating
habits of the red-footed booby.
Research discovered a kid of
“avian apartheid” e x i st e d
between white and brown
birds. Although they nested in
mixed groups, the white birds
only seemed to mate with
other white birds, and their
offspring were therefore white
birds. The same was true of
the brown birds, he said.
“This is strange and we are
yet to discover what is
responsible for their
assortative behaviour,” he said.
Majority of readers support
pictures of poached rhino
Brutality needs to be brought to world’s attention they say

CONCERNED that a reader left the TotT
Facebook group because of pictures of
slaughtered rhino, we asked: “Could we please
get some input from our readers regarding
posting pics of the rhino. We have had one
unhappy member who would prefer us not to
post the pics. What is the general consensus?”
Sylvia Whitecross was undeterred. “Print the
pictures, please,” was her comment.
Chrisna Kruger wrote that, “if it’s the truth,
show it”.
Darryl Kukard commented: “Not posting a pic
will not have the same impact. We need to find
a way to put a stop to this. Maybe we need to
get the e-mail address of the Chinese Embassy
and if everyone continuously sends pictures on
a daily basis of the slaughter they might start to
do something”.
He continued later with: “Wonder what they
would do if the pandas were in the same
s i t u at i o n ? ”
On the other hand, Jenni Nichola Best wrote:
“Chinese, in general, feel nothing for animals.
They are [just] commodities.” She said: “It’s
humans doing this, and these scumbags can’t
be very far away from any of us”.
Russell Deutschmann wrote: “I think that pics
of them in the wild should not be posted. Once
harmed show the world what savages we have
living with us”.
Our own columnist, Beverly Young, was not
convinced, and wrote that the pictures upset
h e r.
“One does not post pics of humans in this
condition do we? There is always a warning of
graphic visuals – and mostly areas blacked
out,” she wrote.
‘Hiding your
head in the
sand and
being
squeamish will
not help our
rhino or
e l ep h a n t ! ’
Yvonne MacKenzie Botha seemed to be on
the same page. “I know the feeling Bev,” w r ot e
MacKenzie. “I actually feel so sad that I cry.
How can anyone be so cruel?”
Regarding the pic posting, Chrisna Kruger
wrote: “This should be shown to the world
because it’s the truth, as uncomfortable and
upsetting as these images are they do have an
impact.
“Many people do not understand what the
fight against poaching entails and the horror
inflicted on these animals, and pictures like
these draw attention and create an opportunity
for educating and informing.
“ A graphic image warning will help to warn
people who do not want to see the images
[automatically] to be able to decide if they want
to view it or not. The sad fact is if this carnage
continues one day this will be the last image of
the last rhino out there and an entire species
will be remembered like this”.
But Young remained resolute and posted this
response to Kruger’s comment. “T h e r e fo r e
Chrisna, if we show similar [pics] of humans it
will act as a warning? Not in this life.”
Jerome Roger Boulle weighed in and wrote:
“Global awareness of their plight could put our
own officialdom under pressure to do
something. Hiding the images lets those
individuals off the hook. How can a government
claim to have the welfare of its people at heart
if it cannot protect a harmless herbivore in its
own environment? I say keep up the pressure
because, if we don’t, these are the only images
we’ll remember”.
Sheilagh Scott wrote: “People need to see
and be made aware of the horror! Hiding your
head in the sand and being squeamish will not
help our rhino or elephant!”
Angi Bezuidenhout wrote: “Despicable ... the
poachers deserve a slow death.”
Darryl Andrew Parrish had a slightly different
angle on the subject.
“Surely the game reserves and game farmers
should be responsible for the safety of their
wild game. They know full well that their rhinos
are going to be killed by poachers and extra
24-hour security with more guards to should be
deployed. After all, these reserves and farms
earn a lot of income from [the] public and they
can afford the extra guarding. They leave the
doors open to poaching,” he wrote.
OPINION
New bill
a big
concer n
THE Eastern Cape tour bus for public
hearings on the government’s
Expropriation Bill stopped over in Port
Alfred yesterday, less than 24 hours after a
press release on the matter was issued.
Talk of the Town got word out by
Facebook, but only a handful of residents
showed up. What kind of response did the
provincial government expect when it
provided such short notice? It appears,
once again, that the government is simply
going through the motions of public
participation on a matter of grave
impor tance.
The official candyfloss press release for
the proposed law states that it “seeks to
provide for the expropriation of property for
a public purpose or in the public interest,
subject to just and equitable
c o m p e n s at i o n ”.
If ratified by parliament and the
president, it would grant power to the
minister of public works to expropriate
property to provide for “the
accommodation, land and infrastructure
needs of the state”.
The bill also seeks to delegate power of
expropriation to local government.
Anyone who owns anything should pay
attention to this bill, because as civil rights
group AfriForum has pointed out, all forms
of property could be targeted by
government for nationalisation.
We have tended to think of expropriation
in terms of land only, and more specifically
of farmland – that it’s an issue for farmers
only. Not that we have not sympathised
with farmers who have this Sword of
Damocles hanging over them, but it has
been a remote problem for town and city
dwellers.
The bill determines that the government
can expropriate any asset if it is in the
public’s interest or to obtain a public
objective.
A home, business, stocks, and even
intellectual property could therefore be
expropriated by the state if deemed in the
public interest.
As has already been touted in the land
reform debacle, the “willing buyer, willing
seller” principle will also be disposed of, as
it is only considered one of the factors in
determining value.
The government’s move to limit private
land ownership can also be seen in the
ANC’s recent policy proposals on limiting
foreign land ownership.
Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg, the CEO
of AfriForum’s business arm, AfriBusiness
warned: “Restitution, redistribution and
inequality have nothing to do with the aims
of this new Expropriation Bill. It is simply
an attempt by the ANC to gain more
control over individuals and communities –
nothing more than the power that medieval
feudal lords had enjoyed.”
Should the Expropriation Bill be
approved by parliament, AfriBusiness has
vowed to fight it in the Constitutional
Cour t.
Without further ado, the “lady” proclaimed,
“And you’re a f*****g a******e”.
Village family service at St John’s
ST John’s Anglican Church in Bathurst will be
holding a Village Family Service this Sunday,
starting at 8.30am.
This will be the third of such
inter-denominational services, intended to bring
the community of Bathurst together in worship
and celebration.
The service is open to all, young and old. St
John’s has offered itself as a place of spiritual
community for young families by offering these
periodic family services as a supplement to
their regular services.
It will be a shorter, simplified version of a
traditional Anglican service, accessible to
children and adults, followed by tea in the
church hall.
St John’s is one of the few churches in the
country that is open on most days of the week
– not only for its historic interest – but also to
provide a quiet and spiritual place for personal
prayer and contemplation. For more
BUSINESSFORUM
Travel insurance
TRAVEL insurance is usually
not what one likes to
purchase after you have paid
for your delightful holiday or
business trip but alas,
dangers lurk.
Unfortunately, getting ill or
being involved in an
accident overseas can
cost you hundreds of
thousands of rands.
I know of a case
where a woman from
Durban travelled to
New Zealand and
picked up a bug fairly
common to locals with
almost no effect on them, but
it had a devastating effect on
her, as a foreigner.
She was eventually rushed
to hospital and treated for
days on end but the
treatment did not work. She
worsened daily and
eventually she died.
So now her family has been
burdened by the huge cost of
her medical treatment, as
well as the cost of getting her
body back to South Africa.
The bills eventually ran to
more than R1-million. Imagine
leaving your loved ones with
that sort of noose around
their necks?
We sell travel insurance
with TIC (Travel Insurance
Consultants – Santam),
Regent Insurance and Chartis
Insurance, so we definitely
have a policy that will suit
your needs.
ý We can also best advise
those elderly persons (over
70) for whome insurance
costs an arm and a leg – so
try us first!
ý We can sell you
insurance through your credit
card if you used that to
purchase your air ticket. So
before you buy an air ticket,
ask us for advice – credit
cards all offer
different benefits.
ý We can offer
youth insurance for
under-28s for up to a
year, so you know
your kids are safe
overseas.
ý Local insurance
in South Africa – should you
hire a car, you could possibly
get your excess waived in the
event of an accident.
So, please consider this as
an important aspect of your
travel plans – we would love
to advise you.
Saving for retirement
I HAVE discussed the
vital importance of
saving for retirement
from a very young
age.
In actual fact, the
wisest decision a
young person can
make, is to enter into
a retirement savings
plan right from his or
her very first pay
cheque.
You really do not
need to start with an
enormous monthly
amount to ensure that
you will be able to
retire comfortably
when you reach
retirement age.
To prove my point, I
have done some very
useful calculations:
ý If a person aged
20, starts with a
saving of R500 per
month, escalating at
10% per annum, into a
retirement annuity, the
illustrated retirement
value at the age of 65
should amount to
about R16.75-million.
ý If the same
person postpones
his/her retirement
savings plan until they
reach the age of 30,
the illustrated
retirement value at the
age of 65, amounts to
R4.99-million, while
using the exact same
criteria as above.
Isn’t it devastating
that by postponing for
10 years, the estimated
difference amounts to
almost a whopping
R12-million?
ý Let’s take it
further to the
unfortunate person
who decided to
postpone their savings
plan to commence
only at the age of 40.
This poor
individual’s retirement
savings will amount to
an illustrated value of
only R1.35-million
when they reach 65.
ý Lastly, we can
MONEY
M AT T E R S
... with Nico Human
refer to the case study
of the poor person
who only decided to
start with a retirement
savings plan at the
age of 50.
This poor individual
will certainly be
experiencing a
massive shortage of
retirement funds,
when they discover
that their “l a st - m i n u t e
effor t” will calculate to
only an estimated
value of R305 000.
How does one find a
solution to solve the
enormous problem
that the late starters
Whenever I book to go overseas or even travel locally, I never have to
cancel because I never get sick, get hit by a car, or have accident of any
kind. My bags are never lost by airlines, stolen by thieves, or run over by
buses. I never get delayed by strikes, never book with tour companies which
go broke and never need any help or device.
My plans never need to pay out more than what I have budgeted for, and I
never need to re-book.
I will never incur additional costs to return home early because my
family members never get sick and I will never be retrenched from my full
time job.
I will never get sued overseas, or be thrown in jail for something that I
didn’t do, and will never need to guarantee a six figure bill to a hospital
before they will admit me.
Otherwise I would probably have to buy Travel Insurance....
For anyone who can’t afford to holiday in “never never” land.
Let us advise you of all aspects of Travel Insurance –
we are the Travel Insurance Professionals !
are faced with? It
really seems
absolutely impossible,
but I can assure you
that the only way to
overcome the problem
will be to start
investing a much
larger amount than
the R500 per month
that was used in the
calculations above.
The lesson to learn
from this exercise is
that nothing, but
nothing, can compare
with the actual wonder
of compound interest.
In laymen’s terms,
we can refer to it as
earning interest on
interest. The
well-respected genius,
Albert Einstein,
referred to compound
interest as the Eighth
Wonder of the World.
Please bear with me
as we do one more
case study, just to
prove the point.
If the person
referred to under
paragraph two above,
wants to make up the
actual shortfall, to
enable him/her to end
up on equal footing
with the person in
paragraph one above,
this person will have
to start by saving in
the region of R1800
per month instead of
the R500 that person
number one started
with.
Referring to persons
three and four above,
one can just imagine
the amounts
necessary if they want
to equal the end result
of the fortunate person
number one.
To prevent certain
hardships at
retirement, it is
essential to consult
with a qualified
financial adviser as a
matter of urgency.
The Blaauwkrantz Bridge disaster
31 lives lost in Eastern Cape train crash ‘an unforgettable chapter’
ONE of the worst train
disasters in the Eastern
Cape took place almost
exactly 105 years ago,
on April 22 1911.
The memory of that
devastating accident on
the Blaauwkrantz
Bridge is an important
and unforgettable
chapter in our regional
SERENDIPITY
... with Bev Young
histor y.
The accident occurred
on a line while the train
was travelling at an
average speed towards
Grahamstown, when
one of the trucks,
loaded with stone,
jumped the metals
unknown to the engine
driver, about 50-yards
from the bridge.
It continued running
on the check rail until
the structure was
reached. The checkrail
then splintered away
from the pinewood
sleepers, while the front
coupling snapped, and
the truck, four
passenger coaches, and
a van toppled over and
plunged into the abyss.
The chasm is 250-foot
deep, and the coaches
crashed to the bottom.
The engine leapt
forward as it lost its
main load, giving the
driver the first
indication of something
seriously wrong. On
grasping the situation,
he put on full steam
and dashed to
Grahamstown for help,
fainting as soon as he
had conveyed the
terrible news.
A neighbouring
farmer saw the train
hurled into the gorge,
and rushed to the scene
with his staff, to render
aid. He was powerless
to do anything until the
relief trains arrived from
G r a h a m st o w n .
A Reuters message
states that the rescue
party had a difficult and
distressing task. The
wreckage of the train
was littered down the
jagged sides of the
gorge, and in the
streams below, mingled
with wreckage, were the
dead and dying.
Rescuers extricated
the mangled forms from
among the shattered
coaches and twisted
metalwork to the
agonising
accompaniment of the
TRAGIC AFTERMATH: An overturned truck from a train lies on the Blaauwkrantz Bridge after the
rest of the carriages plunged into the gorge
groans and cries of
those who were still
living and had been in
the throes of torture
over two hours. There
were about 50
passengers in the train.
Some of the killed
and injured and a mass
of wreckage were
caught on a ledge
about 120ft down. The
removal of the debris
from this point and

from the crags was
most difficult, but in six
hours, the doctors and
nurses extricated the
dead and injured, who
were hoisted up in
sacking to the edge of
the gorge.
A correspondent of
the Daily Mail stated
that many of the
rescuers fainted on
approaching the
wreckage. Rescue work
was much-impeded

owing to thousands of
pineapples from one of
the smashed trucks
rendering the rocks and
crags slippery and
dangerous.
Exclusive of the
engine driver and his
fireman, there were only
two uninjured survivors.
A child, Janet Crockett,
was miraculously saved.
She was hurled through
a window of the train
and in the fall lodged
on a girder at a height
of 200-feet. Her rescuer,
a farmer, who climbed
at great peril, found her
crying for her mother,
but unhurt. Her parents
and sister were badly
injured. The guard,
named Maxwell, leaped
from his van as the
front wheels left the
rails, and escaped
without injury.
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
IT IS hardly surprising that the youth of
South Africa are struggling to find
employment. Figures released by the
statistician general’s office on Monday
show 57% of South Africans aged
between 16 and 34 who did not have a
matric, are unemployed. But the figures
were better for those with a matric at
38%, while those with a tertiary
education were at 4% and graduates
were at just 1% unemployed. The report
also highlighted that 59% of black
males in the same age category were
victims of theft during the 2013/2014
financial year and that 53.4% of youth
between the ages of 16 and 24 were
victims of assault.
There is undoubtedly a link between a
lack of education and crime.
This situation will not improve until
government faces the enormous task of
rebuilding a primary and secondary
educational system that caters for the
needs of the children, as well as the
industries they are likely to enter.
TOPLESS students entered lecture halls
at Rhodes University on Tuesday to
protest after the posting on social
media of a list of the names of 11
students accused of sexual assault.
N OT for the first time the province has
virtually no notification to the general
public. At the time of writing, we are
just about to attend a public hearing on
provide for the expropriation of property
for a public purpose or in the public
The press release reads, “Members of
the public and organisations interested
to make comments on the bill are
invited to attend the public hearings”.
But how is that going to happen when
no one was informed of the meeting?
THE petrol price might rise by around
14c per litre next month, according to
the Automobile Association. This is in
response to a steady rise in the price of
crude oil over the last week or so and
the undervaluation of the local currency.
This, of course, will have a knock-on
effect on the price of all transported
commodities. Perhaps the best bet is to
learn “you’re your own” and begin a
vegetable garden at home.
90th birthday today with a family
for more than 63 years and there is no
sign she is thinking of retirement.
Happy birthday to her.
CRICKET Australia unveiled their
itinerary for their international
programme on Wednesday with the
third test at Adelaide from November
24-28 only pencilled in as a potential
day/night test. Their opponents on that
day, South Africa, are reticent about the
match as it involves a “pink” ball that
appears to be a problem in twilight
conditions. Innovators Australia held the
first day/night test match against New
Zealand at the end of last year where
problems seeing the pink ball were first
discovered.
On the other hand, a day/night test
match might be just what the doctor
ordered to revitalise the five-day game
now that the youth appear to be more in
favour of the shorter forms of the game.
PORT Alfred may be a
small town, but its
industrial hub is
thriving with residents
able to access
products and services
similar to what is
possible in the larger
With the emphasis
on health and fitness,
The story goes that
a few guys got
The name stuck and
the logo took shape,
much-needed service
to the Port Alfred area.
Specialising in
surrounding areas to
East London, Port
Grahamstown, L&W
Couriers has managed
to build a successful
company that truly
adds value.
“We offer free
Warwick said. “Our
objective is to assist
our customers fulfil
their parcel collection
Sp anner worx has
been in operation
since 2011 and, if the
activity in the
indication, is thriving,
even during these
financially depressed
times.
“We service and
repair all petrol and
diesel vehicles,” owner
Chris Nell said.
Nell, who is also a
and reliability are as
important in the
automotive industry as
it is in the field of
av i at i o n .
“It’s difficult to say
why a plane that may
carry just two
passengers is taken
more seriously in
terms of safety than a
motor vehicle,” he
said.
“We do not
differentiate. Safety
and reliability are
therefore two of our
most important
considerations when
we repair a car.”
Nell added he and
his staff treat every
vehicle sent in for
repair or service on a
personal basis and
take great pride in
what leaves the
workshop.
Spannerworx is
getting involved in
motorsport, one of
Nell’s passions, and
are building a car to
compete on the local
racing circuits.
has expanded in a
highly effective
Supplying
Heartwater in sheep, goats and
cattle a tick-borne deadly disease
HEARTWATER (formerly
known as cowdriosis) is a
tick-borne disease that can
easily kill large numbers of
domestic ruminants.
The disease is caused by a
blood parasite carried by the
bont tick. This bont tick is
found mainly in the frost-free,
drier parts of the country. Sick
animals may have a fever of
40°C or higher. You may also
notice strange behaviour, such
as twisting the head towards
the body.
Other symptoms include a
high-stepping gait,
VET’S
VOICE
... at your service
convulsions or very hard
paddling. Animals that die
from heartwater often have
foam and fluid coming out of
the nose.
If you open the carcass, you
will often find fluid in the
abdomen, chest and sac
surrounding the heart (hence
the name of the disease).
The lungs will also be
swollen with foam and
there will be fluid in the
windpipe.
Once heartwater is
suspected, it is critical to
treat immediately. In
endemic areas, the disease
can be controlled by
vaccinating the animals, and
treating for ticks. It is
important to consult your
veterinarian about the best
way to control the disease in
your area.
LET’S
CHIRP
... with Tim Cockcroft
WELCOME to another edition of my Let’s Chirp
column.
It has been a pleasure to meet some of my
readers over the last week or so. Thank you for
your positive comments! I’m so glad you are all
enjoying learning about our local birds.
Often in the birding world, one finds
beautifully-coloured birds that have calls that
do not match their stunning looks... and the
opposite is also true.
There are plenty of birds out there that don’t
exactly dazzle one with vibrant colours, but they
have songs that will brighten your day! This
brings us to our bird of the week – the brown
scrub-robin. Although the brown scrub-robin
might not be particularly colourful. It is still a
beautiful bird with a beautiful song. It is quite a
common bird in our area, where it lives in
coastal and dune forests, valley bushveld and
riverine thickets.
The brown scrub-robin is not an easy bird to
see. The first sign of its presence is either one
(or both) of two calls. The song is a
high-pitched, melodious, “Seee-su,
see-see-see”, which can vary slightly from one
individual to the next. It is quite loud and can
be heard from quite a distance, although on
one occasion, I heard one that sounded far
away, only to find it was sitting on a branch
right in front of me, singing very softly! Please
recording of this beautiful song.
The other call, which I have not yet recorded,
is the alarm call, which is a quiet, scolding,
“zeezeezeezee”. If you watch where the sound is
coming from, you might just see the shape of
the robin making its way through the lower to
mid stratum of the forest. With enough
patience, the bird may emerge and perch on an
open branch for a while. If it does that, take
advantage of the sighting and enjoy it while you
can!
Well folks, that’s it for another week. Please
remember that I am available for birdwatching
tours in and around the Port Alfred area. Please
MILKWOODS BRIDGE CLUB
A few salutary lessons can be learned from Board 6 with its unequal distribution in
North’s hand. This bidding was probably the norm at the tables – West opens 1 Spade
or 1 Heart and North bids 6 Diamonds – end of story. (1) Except that West in 2 cases
doubled, proving the maxim that one should not double a slam unless one has the
Ace and King of opponent’s trump suit! North knew that East would probably lead a
Spade, his partner’s suit, and he could then ruff in his own hand.
À
bid showed that he was not worried about Spades. With the bonus of the Ace of Spades
in Dummy, North can now see 12 tricks. But what about those Norths who received
À
throw his losing Club on the Ace of Spades. But how does he get to dummy? Can you
spot the only entry? (3) This was missed by quite a few pairs – it is the 6 of Diamonds!
No doubt you can notice more lessons to be learned – possibly in the bidding?
With E – W silent throughout the bidding has proceeded: 1D – 1H; 2D – 3C; North now has a problem in
that South has introduced a new suit at the ‘three level’, which should not be passed. North after considering
the options bids 3NT, what do you do as South?
À
is different. Your heart suit is ragged and partner has not supported it. Partner is marked with at least a
5 card diamond suit. Your club suit is reasonable and may be useful for a 3NT contract and as a clincher
you hold A J x in spades; the suit that the opponents are almost certain to attack. Partner must also have
a stopper in spades or he/she would not have bid 3NT. So this time you pass.
East is on lead what do you lead? Don’t lead the 5 or the 2, you have a sequence and it seems from the bid-
À
hope is that partner has the Ace or King and at some stage when he/she gains the lead can play a spade
through declarer’s (presumed) Jack. Unfortunately nothing works for the defenders and their opponents
Ndlambe
“How many of you
“Do not fear the
dreams have power in
them. You have the
power to speak things
Klaas also said the
pupils should do
opportunities and who
provided them.
“When you invest in
“There is no
Klaas also said
discipline at tertiary
level began at
level.
“Not studying before
writing an exam does
not show discipline,”
he said.
“Career choice is a
Klaas ended his
speech by thanking
the pupils for their
He said he knew
young people had a
short attention span
these days, but the
attention they had
shown during his
address gave him
hope.
Magwaca said he
just wanted to express
a big thank you to all
“We were very pleased with the 72 units
mowers haven’t been there for several weeks.
LEGAL EAGLES
HERE’S another quiz for the older reader,
whether you continue to live in Grahamstown or
have retired to the Sunshine Coast. Back in the
’60s and ’70s there were quite a few attorneys’
firms in Grahamstown – four of them had two
Subsidised by the National Lottery, there are
more than 360 productions headed for
THERE’S a rather interesting framed photo
Winner of the A division was Zani Richardson,
A PHOTO on last week’s page showed the long
near the industrial area. A reader on the
western fringes of the Eastern Cape said that
two years after her brother died in 2010 she
visited Grahamstown and could not believe
what his grave looked like. She writes: “I found
the headstone almost obscured by the heap of
even bothered to level the sand. It seems
nothing has changed since then.”
across South Africa, and a further three
overseas. I’m sure there are readers who’ll be
interested to read about these former
Grahamstonians. One former Grahamstonian
now living abroad is Dennis Loots, who entered
the ministry upon matriculating at Graeme
College and, after living and ministering in
Somerset West for several years, is pastoring a
... with Sid Penney
church in China. Dennis, like many others, looks
forward to his weekly e-mailed copy of
Grahamstown This Week. He writes: “Who
would have thought we would end up in China.
It is wonderful that no matter where we end up
in the world, home and where you grew up
always remain special. It is with real nostalgia
that I read of the happenings now as well as the
memories of times past.”
His late father Gerry Loots was a well-known
figure around town, energetic and always with a
broad smile on his face. I remember the Friday
evening auction sales he and a colleague held
in rooms in Cawood Street, just off High Street.
He was involved in other businesses in his time,
and was also a partner in Lotus Estates, as far
as I can remember.
STEELBAND IN CAPE TOWN
THE Graeme College steelband is being kept
busy on its tour to Cape Town since leaving
Grahamstown two days ago. Under the
leadership of music teacher Sylvester Appollis,
the band members will perform at the Cape
Town steelband festival in the Baxter Theatre.
ON COUNTRY ROADS
THE Bruintjieshoogte 50km ultra-marathon
between Pearston and Somerset East is a
gruelling event, what with a mean pass to
negotiate along the way. Almost 200 runners
took part in the race last Saturday - among
them were eight Grahamstonians. Neo Mohapi
of Rhodes was the first of these, finishing 38th
overall in 4 hours 25 minutes 06 seconds. Other
local finishers were: 51st Maqhawe Mmango
(Rhodes) 4 hrs 42 mins 41 secs; 69th
Mzwabantu Nesi (Run/Walk for Life) 4 hrs 59
mins 27 secs; 105th Ntokozo Biyela (Rhodes) 5
hrs 24 mins 13 secs; 109th Willie Bosman
(Run/Walk for Life) 5 hrs 29 mins 49 secs;
137th Colin Bennett (Albany Saints & Sinners) 5
hrs 53 mins 44 secs; 138th Philippa Field
(Albany Saints & Sinners) 5 hrs 53 mins 45
secs; 160th Howard Ball (Albany Saints &
Sinners) 6 hrs 02 mins 43 secs.
AGENTS FOR THIS AND THAT
FIVE decades ago Grahamstown estate agents
and attorneys’ firms were agents for various
insurance companies and building societies.
Many of them are no longer in existence. Take,
for example, Tom Tits Travel at 76 High Street.
In addition to arranging flights and sea
voyages, they were agents for Parity Insurance
Co, Eagle Star Insurance Co, Prudential
Insurance Co, and also agents for
Johannesburg Building Society. Tom Tits Travel,
you might remember, was owned by Tom
Knowles. Even the Drostdy Shop (gifts and
tableware) at 131 High Street was an agent, this
for Norwich Union Life Insurance Society.
HOT AND COLD
DID you know that back in the ’60s, Keey’s
Grand Hotel had an advertisement in a local
publication that included the sentence “Hot and
cold running water in all rooms”, and that the T
Birch & Co advert carried the sentence “A
century of honest trading”?
IMPRESSED: Mike
Choromanski, a visitor
to Grahamstown from
Durban, admires the
new National English
Literary Museum
(NELM) complex in
Worcester Street
which is fast nearing
completion. The area
of the museum facing
Worcester Street will
take on a magnificent
appearance once the
hundreds of shrub,
plant and flower
varieties presently in
pots are transplanted.
It is believed the
‘green’ museum will be
handed over by the
contractors during
May
WHAT an achievement for our club!
Four of our members, Noel and Maureen
Heale, Jane Armitage and Trevor Frost were all
selected to play for EP Seniors.
They recently travelled up to Johannesburg to
play in the Inter-district competition. The men
did us very proud as the EP senior men came in
joint third and received a bronze medal. Very
well done, chaps. The winners were
Johannesburg, second was Port Natal and joint
third with EP was Eden.
The croquet section has just held a very
successful Allan Wilson Memorial competition,
with 39 players participating. All the sections
were hotly contested and an excellent game
standard maintained. Well done all.
A club markers course will be held on May 6
at 9am. The ladies’ handicap singles continue
on Wednesday May 27, round 3 and 4. The
Not resting on any laurels, Bill continued his
ULTIMATE RIVALRY: Margot Prosser from Cape Town fights
Wilson memorial competition last weekend. Margot lost
the clash and took second place in the open singles to her
husband Richard’s first prize
Pippa Swift (18+9) bringing up fourth place.
Lionel’s team were also responsible for winning
nine of the 20 “skins” - with some amazing
“carry forward” ties.
The next Personal Trust Trips is Friday May
20. Outside clubs are reminded that they are
most welcome to participate - send the Kenton
Last Friday’s Draw was missed by Mick Carle -
most cruelly, because he had gone home five
minutes before the draw. The message here is
clear - “Stay in the pub“! This Friday the pot will
be R1000.
Duties for April 25 to 1 May 1: Tabs - Gloria
competition it was win one and loose one on
the last end with the overall position being
Kenton on 6 points with a -4 shot profit and
Kowie on two points with the +4 shot profit. In
the men’s section the day belonged to Kowie
On Thursday the Snowball competition was
played and there was no winner.
Last Friday night we played the fifth round of
our Pick n Pay Night Bowls Competition in
beautiful weather conditions and the Lions Club
doing some brisk business selling their fast
foods from the pavilion.
“Performer of the night” was Team Mega who
took home the Pick n Pay vouchers. We had
held over the week three prize won by Buco,
and team member Craig was on hand for a
belated acceptance of their prize. The “Roll
Over” competition was not won again so the
kitty for this one grows to R180. The Pick n Pay
swindle board draw for a bottle of whisky was
won by East Cape Motors member, Robert Avis,
who said he does not know what to do with it.
Saturday was a Snowball Competition again.
The ends were drawn and the winning score for
the day was three. Gavin Deenik’s team of Dot
Rohrs, Judy Hunter and Gerald Mills were on
hand to accept the competition prize money
which allowed them to buy four tickets in the
raffle our ladies are running for their Ladies’
Classic which is played in May. The pot was so
big that they had to add some money to it to
allow them to buy the four tickets. Well done,
guys.
We sent one team to play in the
Sunday and they finished in the middle of the
Kim Gardner holed the only two-club
Fresh Stop Port Alfred Mixed
April 16: Light westerly breezes were
to be taken into account in an
otherwise perfect day for golf on
Saturday morning. No fewer than 43
players turned out to play the usual
two-to-count stableford alliance
drawn into 10 four balls and one three
ball.
The “bachelor herd” of Andy Manson,
Tim Shanks, Dave Stanley and Eric
Segers easily won the morning’s
proceedings by carding a massive 95
points. Second placed Dave Kirk, Eric
Lindsay, Dee Jones-Phillipson and
Ingrid Griffiths were a distant second
on 90 points.
Margie Reid, Debbie Longhurst, Dale
Wisener and Terry Harris carded a
dismal 76 points to take home the
energy- reviving drinks sponsored by
Fresh Stop.
Eric Lindsay, Eric Segers, Derek
Sinclair and Vino Bearzi all made
birdie on the 6th. Ingrid Griffiths was
closest to the pin on the eighth to
take home the sponsor's bottle of
wine. Good nett scores were recorded
by Eric Segers (a sizzling 64), Eric
Lindsay (68) and Danny Tarpani (69).
KGB Results
Tuesday April 12: Scores did not
reflect the ambient conditions on
Tuesday morning's two-to-count
stableford alliance competition. The
promise of good weather encouraged
a good turnout of 42 players who
were drawn into two three balls and
nine four balls.
Two covies returned 89 points to
share the winning position, namely (1)
Tim Shanks, Dave Stanley, Eric
Segers and the fair Rosie
Calmeyer-Leach and (2) Mike
Beaumont, Eugene Erasmus, Danny
Tarpani and Cliff Roberts. Brian Reid,
Mike McNamara and Terry Harris
could not match the pace of the rest
of the field carding just 73 + 5 = 78
points to take charge of the Hamer en
Sukkel at the 19th hole.
Dale Wisener (sixth), Vino Bearzi
(eighth) and Dave Stanley (13th) all
holed birdies on the par-threes
indicated. Eugene Erasmus netted a
superb 64 whilst Tim Shanks, David
Groenewald (67), Dale Wisener (68)
and Bob Shaw (69) all netted
better-than-average scores during the
morning.
Friday April 15: Once again warm and
practically windless weather graced
the Royal Port Alfred course as 39
players were drawn into nine
four-balls and one three-ball to play a
GYMNASTIC FUN
two-to-count stableford alliance.
Mike Dobbs, Barrie B Brady, Marina
and Peter Murray dovetailed well to
card 90 points and win the
competition. They were two points
clear of runners-up Peter Longhurst,
John Crandon, Brian Hayward and
Eugene Erasmus (88).
Wilton Adcock, Chris Niebieszczanski,
Derick van Harmelen and Mike Brown
did not fare as well in scoring just 80
points, insufficient to avoid the much
to be avoided Hamer en Sukkel.
Only Heinz Czepluch's 68 and Peter
Longhurst's 69 broke the nett 70
mark and the only par three birdie of
the day was holed by Richard Laing
(sixth).
Fast-growing race aims
to get community going
New 5km family
fun run and lots
of prizes in store
LOUISE CARTER
THE Siza Vitality Half Marathon returns to
Port Alfred on April 30, with a fun event for
the whole family.
Last year, the event enjoyed much success,
seeing more than 200 entries for its debut 21km
race in Port Alfred.
This year, sports event company, Siza Vitality,
has incorporated a 5km Fun Run into the main
21km race, making it suitable for the whole
fa m i l y.
Preparations for the event are building
momentum fast, with already more than 200
pre-race entries from the SAPS, which is using
the race as a qualifier for their SAPS Provincial
Championships.
Siza Vitality is billing its half marathon as the
“Eastern Cape’s most exciting road race event”
and is looking to include an ultra-marathon in
future.
This year, the course is slightly different from
last year, due to a few safety issues that
surfaced last year.
The 21km will start at the Port Alfred High
School fields and head towards East London on
the R72.
Runners will turn left on Bathurst Street and
head to the top entrance of Nemato, at Joe
Slovo Street.
The route continues along Runeli Drive,
through Nemato, then to Station Hill before
heading to Wharf Street, over Putt Bridge and
into town.
From there, the course will head towards the
West Bank and areas along the beach and river,
before the finish at the school grounds.
Runners can expect some interesting
sightings and challenging hills on this course.
“It’s not an easy coastal run,” Siza Vitality
chief executive Noluthando Vithi said.
Founder and chairman of Siza Vitality, Xolani
Masiza, believes in promoting a healthy and
physically active lifestyle.
“The Siza Vitality Half Marathon and 5km Fun
Run is designed to encourage all South
Africans, particularly the local community, to
FAMILY FINISH: Last year at the Siza Vitality Half Marathon, from left, a tired and weary Scott Harvey picked up his son Josh on the way to the finish line
and was joined by his nephew, Andrew, and niece, Ashley Colville-Reeves. This year, Siza Vitality have included a 5km Fun Run in the event that will take
place on April 30
appreciate the benefits that a healthy, active
lifestyle brings to mental and physical health,”
Masiza said.
The organisers have increased the value of
the prizes, with more than R130 000 up for
grabs, medals for all finishers and free T-shirts
for the first 500 finishers.
The inclusion of a 5km Fun Run is to
encourage families to enter, young and old –
even those who have no level of fitness.
“We want people who normally wouldn’t

À
enter to partake. Whether you are big, or small
or unfit, it starts here, with this race,” E a st e r n
Province Athletics (EPA) president Selby
Thabethe said.
Schools also stand a chance to win, with the
school with the most entries
receiving R5 000 as a participation
prize.
Looking ahead, EPA organisers
and members hope for the event
to become an interprovincial race,
