Responses also increased 

from 656 last year to 1 073, 

an increase of 64% 

y e a r- o n - y e a r. 

A total of 45% of the respondents 

were international 

visitors who compared 

Ndlambe establishments 

with those in other parts of 

the world. 

The average overall satisfaction 

result is also encouraging, 

as it is calculated 

based on several factors including 

if the guests would 

recommend the establishment 

to others visiting the 

area. The score, out of 10, 

was 9, with the lowest average 

rating of 6.9. The average 

rating on the service received 

was also an exceptionally 

high 9.3. 

Among the other awards 

on the evening, Place on the 

River scored 82%, and the 

highest absolute response 

was 740 for Shamwari Game 

R e s e r v e. 

The highest score was taken 

by Fat Fish Bed and 

Breakfast, with the highest 

score for a micro enterprise 

(with more than five respondents) 

being shared by Fort 

D’acre Reserve and Settler 

Sands which both received 

scores of 10. 

The winner of the micro 

category was Fort D’acre 

(10), and for self-catering 

establishments, River Roost 

(10). As for B&Bs and guest 

houses, the winner was Fat 

Fish, and for game lodges,

Ward 9 man’s rape case revealed

criminal conviction 

for rape. 

TotT received a 

copy of the SAPS 

crime intelligence 

profile of Mfundiso 

Ntabeni last week, 

from a source who 

asked to remain 

a n o n y m o u s. 

Ntabeni’s profile 

lists three cases 

against him – one for 

rape in 1999, and two 

for assault – one in 

2013 and another last 

year – which are listed 

as pending cases. 

For the rape case 

the status says “R OT 

[result of trial] unavailable”. 

To t T ’s queries to 

the SAPS yielded no 

answers. Local police 

spokeswoman 

Sergeant Sindy Pienaar 

said the matter 

had been referred to 

the provincial SAPS 

communications 

office as “we are not 

in the position to 

reveal any personal 

information about Mr

The full text of the 

applicable section of 

the notice, titled “National 

Guidelines for 

the Establishment and 

Operation of Municipal 

Ward Committees”, 

states: “A person 

should not be 

elected who after February 

1997 has been 

convicted of an 

offence and sentenced 

to imprisonment without 

the option of a 

fine for a period of not 

less than 12 months”. 

Contacted for comment, 

Ntabeni said 

these accusations 

were coming out 

because it was the 

“silly season” before 

the local government 

elections and people 

were trying to tarnish 

his name. 

He admitted to all 

SENIOR SAPS officer, Lieutenant 

Bongile Patrick Zokoza, who was 

found guilty of various charges after 

causing a road accident in February 

last year, may still face internal disciplinary 

action when departmental 

charges are heard by the provincial 

commissioner’s o f f i c e. 

Zokoza, whose name was incorrectly 

spelt “Zakusa” in last week’s 

page two article, was found guilty of 

driving under the influence of alcohol, 

common assault and crimen 

injuria. 

He rolled his car in Bank Lane, 

Port Alfred, and smashed into another 

vehicle with a husband, wife 

and infant child on board. 

When police arrived at the scene he 

became verbally abusive and resisted 

arrest. At the Port Alfred charge office 

he insulted another police officer’s 

wife and kicked him in the groin. 

He assaulted the same officer again at 

the Port Alfred Hospital when he was 

taken for blood alcohol tests. 

Zokoza received a R3 000 fine or 

six month’s imprisonment for drunk 

driving, a R550 fine or 30 days imprisonment 

for common assault and a 

R1 000 fine or 60 days imprisonment 

for crimen injuria. 

Magistrate Xolisile Dlulisa did not 

suspend Zokoza’s driving licence 

three of the cases, but 

disputed the details. 

On the rape conviction, 

he said: “I spent 

five years in prison. 

But I appealed and 

was found not guilty.” 

Asked to provide 

evidence of this, he 

said he was too busy 

as he was involved in a 

community protest 

over electing Ward 9’s 

next councillor. 

“I don’t want to be 

a councillor myself, 

I’m a businessman,” 

he said. 

He admitted to the 

assault case regarding 

his girlfriend but said 

the matter had been 

settled when he paid a 

fine. He also confirmed 

he was one of 

the parties in the assault 

case regarding 

Runeli, but disputed 

Runeli’s a l l e g a t i o n s. 

The case returns to 

court on Monday. 

Ward 9 councillor 

Skura Venene said he 

had been made aware 

of Ntabeni’s criminal 

record last week, “but 

I haven’t researched it 

yet”. 

“He has been on 

my ward committee 

since I was elected 

councillor in 2011.”

the SAPS Zokoza required a vehicle 

to get around. 

A civil case against Zokoza will 

now resume for the damage caused to 

the other vehicle involved. 

Meanwhile SAPS officer Sergeant 

Sindy Pienaar stated: “A departmental 

case against the member [Zokoza] 

has been registered and the necessary 

documentation forwarded to the Provincial 

Commissioner’s office, for further 

action. Therefore the matter is 

still pending.” 

Zokoza remains on active duty 

pending the outcome.

THE Ndlambe sewerage plant in Centenary 

Park was again the target of apparent copper 

wire thieves who attacked a guard there last 

Fr i d a y. 

MultiSecurity responded when alerted by 

Hi-Tec Security, which provides the guards. 

The guard said three men had come out of 

the bush and attacked him. He fought back and 

they ran away. 

“The guard said the men were near the generator 

when he saw them,” MultiSecurity reported. 

He was not seriously injured. 

There was a break-in at a shop in Biscay 

Road just after midnight last Thursday morning. 

MultiSecurity officers found a hole in the 

roof and said the cash register was on the roof. 

They spotted two suspects on the roof, one 

above a neighbouring shop, and managed to 

catch them. 

The suspects were then handed over to the 

police. A chisel, crowbar and cellphone were 

also found on the scene. 

One or more burglars broke into a caravan 

in the Willows Caravan Park last Thursday afternoon. 

Two bags of clothing were stolen. 

MultiSecurity reported that entry was 

gained through two open windows and another 

window leading to the bedroom was forced 

open. 

Vexatious car guards were again reported to 

be a problem at the Heritage Mall last Friday 

e v e n i n g. 

A mall employee tried to remove them, but 

Pick n Pay asked for armed response because 

“things were getting out of hand”. The police 

also attended to and sorted out the problem. 

A shop in Main Street, Port Alfred, was broken 

into on Sunday night. MultiSecurity responded 

to an alarm and called the police and 

the client. 

Th e front sliding door has been removed 

from the rail and R950 had been stolen from 

the cash register.

Ndlambe municipal officials 

on Tuesday, when they 

blockaded the R72 at the 

Bushman’s River turnoff. 

Motorists were frustrated 

and stranded for hours. 

Protestors singled out director 

of corporate services 

Lazola Maneli for primary 

blame in an old issue which 

has resurfaced – alleged 

favouritism with regards to 

hiring employees on the municipal 

database. 

Prior to Tuesday’s protest, 

two other protests about the 

issue took place last year – 

one in Nemato and the other 

Alexandria, where at 

least 200 residents demanded 

the resignation of ANC 

councillors, accusing those 

in power of nepotism and 

corruption. Also last year, a 

South African National 

Civic Organisation (Sanco) 

protest accused the municipality 

of skewing of the employee 

database in favour of 

ANC cadres. 

TotT was alerted about 

the protest the night before, 

but was told it would not 

blockade the R72. 

However, protesters set 

fire to branches and refuse 

in the road, and slabs of concrete 

and a fire hydrant 

were ripped out and used as

A woman, who wanted to 

remain anonymous, said if 

you wanted a job, you had to 

sleep with someone in the 

municipality first. 

The protest dispersed between 

2.30pm and 3pm. 

However, according to 

another protest ringleader, 

Lufuzo Gxogxo, no officials 

addressed and that 

consensus is reached 

regarding the lack of 

toilet facilities, lifeguards 

and the need 

for more police officers 

over the 

Christmas period.

Mbolekwa also contradicted 

Gxogxo and insisted 

that municipal officials were 

sent by the municipal manager 

to meet the crowd and 

urged people to come forward 

with evidence of solicitation. 

“As the municipality 

we are transparent when it 

comes to issues of employment. 

The issue of database 

and how it operates has 

been explained to the communities 

including 

M a r s e l l e, ” said Mbolekwa.

effect the police 

operation, but it also 

prevents anyone gaining 

access to the 

charge office to report

“I did get the advice 

of one engineer who 

told me there was 

nothing to be done as 

the station is built on a 

s w a m p, ” she said. 

“The least we can 

do is to ensure the 

municipality cleans 

out all the drains to 

help alleviate the situation.”

A poor 

exa m p l e 

of the 

l aw 

ISUPPOSE we should not be surprised 

at the light sentence handed down to a 

local police officer found guilty of drunk 

driving, assault and crimen injuria last 

week. 

After getting drunk at the krantz braai 

area, Lieutenant Bongile Patrick Zokoza 

rolled his car and hit another car in Bank 

Lane, Port Alfred, a year ago. A husband, 

wife and their infant child were in the other 

car. He could have killed them. 

Then, to compound matters, he became 

verbally abusive to fellow police officers 

who attended the scene and resisted arrest. 

He assaulted one of those policemen in 

the Port Alfred charge office and said despicable 

things about the man’s wife. This is 

where the charges of assault and crimen injuria 

stem from. 

He assaulted the same officer at the Port 

Alfred Hospital where he was taken for a 

blood alcohol test. 

Doubtless the most serious of the charges 

was for drunk driving, for which Zokoza received 

a R3 000 fine or six months’ imprisonment. 

He was sentenced to an additional 

R550 fine or 30 days’ imprisonment for 

common assault and a R1 000 fine or 60 

days’ imprisonment for crimen injuria. 

But the option of paying R3 000 seems 

like a weak dispensation of justice for causing 

an accident, while drunk, which could 

have cost the life of someone in the other 

v e h i c l e. 

In such a case, the charge should be attempted 

murder or attempted culpable 

homicide, if such a thing exists in the law. 

Zokoza’s defence was that he was not actually 

driving, but had asked some mysterious 

youth to drive his car for him as he 

was admittedly too drunk. Yet no evidence 

of this alleged driver was found. The court 

found it to be pure fabrication on the part 

of Zokoza. 

Aside from the fact Zokoza has tarnished 

his long career with the SAPS, there are 

several astonishing and disturbing things 

related to this case. First, why has he remained 

on active duty pending the outcome 

of the criminal case? At the very least he 

should have been suspended. 

And why has it taken a criminal conviction 

for the SAPS to start an internal disciplinary 

process? Surely there was enough 

evidence to have drummed him from the 

force by now. 

Also, with the full knowledge of the lawless 

revelry that takes place at the krantz, 

and the evidence of one of their own officers 

causing an accident after a night of 

drunken partying at the krantz, it is a damning 

indictment on the police to have accepted 

it as a designated drinking area.

Delay in Ward

MG Bongisile writes: I AM very worried 

about the deliberate delay that is happening 

here in Ward 9, Nemato, regarding the 

nomination of the one who would be elected 

to be the councillor in the coming election. 

I feel that there are cunning ideas on the 

sideline as to who this specific councillor 

might be, as the people have already expressed 

their view in the last campaign that 

took place over two weeks. This was due to 

the respondents who gave no accurate reasons 

[for the delay]. 

Now we are waiting for an unknown 

d a t e. 

Things became quiet as if there is a hidden 

agenda, which is to reinstate the current 

councillor or to jeopardise the constitutional 

right of the people to choose their 

c a n d i d a t e. 

That is not only an infringement of our 

constitutional right but also an infringement 

of the people’s divine right, as the 

scripture says in 1 Samuel 8:7-9: “Listen to 

all that the people are saying . . . therefore 

whoever does this act of evil must know 

that he or she will have to face the wrath of 

God someday.” 

If anybody from the ANC will be able to 

tell us why the delay in Ward 9 nominations, 

I would appreciate that.

I would like to raise two more 

issues for the mayor and municipal

ý Roads – If you want people 

to come to Ndlambe and 

enjoy our beautiful beaches 

and the river, make it accessible 

for them! 

Start with re-tarring or 

paving along the river to West 

Beach and then along to 

Shelly Beach. It’s a key road in 

Port Alfred that ALL guests 

and tourists WILL drive on. 

You cannot expect that people 

will want to do so or invest in 

the town when you cannot 

even pave the main tourist 

t h o r o u g h f a r e. 

Come on guys, most parts of 

that “road” have now totally 

disintegrated, to the point 

where small vehicles cannot 

even drive on them. 

Then move to other key “arterial” 

roads around town. 

The road outside my dad’s 

house on West Beach Drive 

has not been re-tarred in more 

than 40 years! What does he 

pay his rates for? Easy municipality 

money I guess. 

ý Renaming – Wow, roads 

named after Justin de Wet 

Steyn and Vuyo Mbuli? You 

have got to be joking! Seriously, 

what in the world was going 

through the mayor’s mind 

when he conjured that? 

Firstly, the late Mbuli may 

have been a great presenter. 

However, he was born in 

Soweto! Yes, he may have 

owned a property in Ndlambe, 

but so have many other 

well-known national names. 

To name a street after someone 

for such a petty reason is 

grandstanding electioneering. 

Also, naming a street after a 

local property developer while 

he is still alive makes me question, 

who is doing who a favour? 

De Wet Steyn should 

deny this request. 

Honestly, there are far better 

people to name a street after 

than a marina developer. 

Why not look at other old Port 

Alfred businessmen and community 

leaders instead of one 

person who you personally 

like, Mr Mayor? Also, there is 

already a De Wet Steyn 

Bridge just outside of town. 

Also, the area, historically, 

was known by certain groups 

as the Albany area. What is 

wrong with the name? It is not 

racist. There are as many historical 

concerns about 

Makana and Ndlambe’s 

in-fighting than the name 

“Albany”. Do your research, 

Mr Mayor, and you will see. 

If you do wish to change 

names, there will be many

is turning as people love it 

here but cannot accept the 

roads, noise and public drinking 

any longer. 

Start sorting the entire town 

out. We understand that there 

is a lot to be done, but ask people 

for help and lay short-, 

medium- and long-term plans 

out so at least you get community 

buy-in. Let people know 

that they will not have their 

road paved this year but in 

three years’ time. It gives them 

hope. Let people know that 

you will clean the storm 

run-off areas. It makes them 

feel secure. Let people know 

that you will enforce by-laws 

and protect the community. It 

makes them feel part of a community, 

because that is after 

all part of the beauty of the 

area.

in on the late afternoon of 

February 10. 

The seas were rougher than 

normal but I still decided to 

swim. I was behind the first 

set of waves when suddenly 

I found I was out of standing 

room and unable to 

make headway to the shore. 

Fortunately the lifeguards 

saw this and Pumizile was 

soon in the water. When he 

got to me he said “don’t panic” 

and I assured him not to 

worry. The last thing a lifeguard 

wants is somebody 

wheelchair ramp at 

the entrance to the 

police station. 

It is so good to 

know there are wonderful 

members of the 

public who are always 

prepared to lend a 

hand.

I offered Pumizile a lift 

back to Nemato where he 

lives, and the whole way there 

he thanked me profusely for 

the lift, while I tried to explain 

that it was I who owed him

Killer road needs lights

the need for street lights from the top entrance 

of Nemato to the 43 Air School

This road is a nightmare after dark with 

pedestrians, pigs, cattle and cars without 

lights. There have been numerous accidents,

They claim to have the 

necessary expertise – but be 

cautious and avoid them if

Many newer fridges are 

filled with a gas called 

R600. When one of these 

fridges is re-gassed, R600 

learn from our mistake. 

It shows you

make mistakes.

THIS is a question often heard on a daily basis. 

During the past few weeks the economic 

situation in South Africa has sunk to probably 

the lowest it has ever been. For a proud country 

that once was one of the major role players in 

the world economy, with our riches in gold and 

other commodities, we now hear of the phrase 

“junk status”. 

It certainly scares the living daylights out 

of any concerned citizen. What can we expect 

during our period of retirement? The dwindling

certainly not contributing anything towards our 

well-being. 

How much does one need to be able to retire? 

This is a question that only a retirement expert 

should even try to answer. As I have said on

expert will need to do numerous complicated 

calculations to be able to give a reasonably correct 

reply to that question. 

Only a few years ago R1-million or R2-million 

sounded like an absolute fortune and in those 

years many people decided to retire with these 

amounts available. I can assure you that if these 

funds were not very wisely invested these poor 

folk are certainly going to fall onto hard times. 

Let’s look at the buying power of the South 

African Rand. Just compare what a hundred 

Rand bill could buy ten years ago, to what you 

can buy with it today. It is really shocking to 

think what the value of our money has become. 

I can further assure you, my dear readers, that 

this not going to end here. Unfortunately, due to 

the instability of the Rand, we are sucked into a 

downward spiral and only a true miracle will be 

able to stop it.

Port Alfred, Laura Kate 

Barnes, at 22 years old, is an 

accomplished artist and 

shop owner. 

A mother to Raven, who 

is three, she was as delighted 

to chat endlessly to me, as I 

to her. This exquisite young 

blonde woman confessed to 

many varying passions, 

among which, other than 

her art, includes antiques 

and Buddha statues. 

Her little shop is a cut-off 

portion of a settler shop, 

which is a story in itself, and 

which she has seamlessly fitted 

out to accommodate her 

shop, studio and living quart 

e r s. 

“Tell me about you,” I 

asked, settling into the snug 

chair in her kitchen. 

Huge grin in place, she 

glowed as she described her 

enthusiasm for art. 

“I simply adore painting.

“There can be times, 

when sketching satisfies me, 

or I jump to oils, watercolours, 

and the subject can 

be from life or my imagination,” 

Barnes said. 

“I am so free when I 

work, the mediums soothe 

me, and living in this historic 

home adds to the serenity I 

feel. I really enjoy portraits, 

as you get to meet such interesting 

people, and of 

course, I have my baby 

daughter, and my dogs, the 

sunshine and the marvellous 

people who pop in here 

from time to time,” she said. 

“From the onset, this 

property was to be my home 

and workshop, and as you 

can see I have small interesting 

antiques, books and anything 

that catches my fancy. 

“As confusing at it might 

seem, I have renamed this 

shop The Brush and Chisel, 

as I now have a partner who 

is an awesome woodworker. 

This has rejuvenated the entire 

shop, as my clientele 

adore the variety I have to 

offer now.” 

Barnes’s parents live in 

Port Alfred and are dealers 

in antiques and old books. 

“It’s fantastic as we all as 

a family have so much in 

common,” she said. 

“It is amazing really, how 

the public are attracted to 

this type of commerce, they 

are always so sweet, interesting 

and as an artist, as difficult 

as it is to advertise, 

they in turn tell friends. 

“Obviously one attracts 

curious ‘I’m just looking’ 

types, but on the whole, I 

simply could not see, or 

imagine, myself doing anything 

else. I love it all.”

WHILE not a 

registered antiquity 

as yet, 

the story behind the 

wooden boardwalk 

along the Duck Pond 

area, goes back to 

about 2003, when back 

from a trip to the Wilderness in 

the Cape, I espied a similar construction 

at their water area. 

Clutching the photograph in 

my hot, sweaty and excited 

hand, I dragged the tourism 

chairman with me to rush and 

visit the then head of environmental 

services, Anton Gouws. 

It did not take much convincing, 

as he too was captivated by 

the concept for Port Alfred. 

Pleading “give me time to see if 

we can find the money”, he 

somehow found a residual fund, 

and the game was on. A few 

months later, having secured an 

affordable woodworker, the 

boardwalk was constructed, 

much to everyone’s delight. 

It has taken a battering over 

the years, and although seldom 

used by local residents, it is a 

source of delight to visitors 

whenever they arrive here. 

MAUREEN Dalzell, public relations 

doyenne with a long association 

with the Fish River Sun, died 

last week after complications following 

a car accident. 

Dalzell was born on January 22 

1945 and grew up in East London. 

She matriculated from Sacred 

Heart Convent in East London in 

1962. She studied at Grahamstown 

Training College and qualified as a 

pre-primary school teacher in 

MAUREEN DALZELL 

1965, but did not pursue teaching 

as a career. 

Dalzell had more than four 

decades of public relations experience 

at Sun International, and was 

a legend in the Eastern Cape communications 

industry. 

She worked as a PRO for the 

Royal Swazi Sun for 10 years, from 

1979 to 1989, and then for Fish 

River Sun from 1989 to 1993. 

More recently she called Port 

Elizabeth home and was a PRO 

then part-time consultant at 

Siyathetha Communications. 

Dalzell tackled each project with 

great enthusiasm, turning her experience 

and media relations 

savvy into media coverage. 

She also did work for The 

Herald and Algoa FM. 

Dalzell’s involvement with charities 

was always a part of her work 

in her career with Sun International, 

which included handling public 

relations for the Fish River, 

Amatola, Boardwalk and 

Mpekweni Sun casinos and res 

o r t s. 

Many remember her trademark 

being her stiletto heels. 

Graham Vass, former general 

manager of The Boardwalk and 

Dalzell’s long-time colleague, described 

her as “a true friend” to 

his family, and “an indelible influence 

on and contributor to so very 

many of my successes and an indispensable 

friend and colleague 

to so many of my friends and colleagues”. 

“She was absolutely untiring in 

her quest to make everything just 

perfect. No second best or ‘nearly 

right’ for our Mo. She could be incredibly 

tenacious and simply 

would not ‘let it go’,” Vass said. 

“Mo lived her life to be helpful, 

kind and of service to others. She 

raised millions for those less fortunate 

yet resisted offers of help, 

support and assistance from me 

and others, even in her times of 

need as she ‘did not want to bother 

us’. 

“A cruel, sad event has taken 

her from us and placed her with 

her late husband, Ronnie, and others 

who will have loved and missed 

her as much as we now do.”

IT was a bumper weekend for the 

members of Grace and Truth 

Church last weekend when it celebrated 

with guest preachers who led 

the congregation in prayer and 

s o n g. 

The weekend conference began 

on Friday evening with John 

Wasserman who spoke of spiritual 

travails and the holding in of issues 

of great import in order for the Holy 

Spirit to enter and relieve you of 

them. 

On Saturday some of the congregation 

gave testimony and said they 

had given a travailing prayer when 

contemplating some of the great 

hurts in the nation and across the 

world, and how the birthing of the 

hurt had released the Holy Spirit 

within them. 

Sunday saw the biggest number of 

congregants and visitors gathered at 

the church to see and hear pop band 

Mi Casa’s lead singer and part-time 

chef and TV personality, Joao da 

Fonseca, also known as J’Somet 

h i n g. 

The three-day conference was a 

hit among locals who not only enjoyed 

the visiting speakers, but also 

the fellowship at the events. 

Pastor of the church, Gary Ford, 

said he was delighted with the 

turnout throughout the weekend.

T IS almost time to kick 

back at this year’s 

Bathurst Agricultural 

Show, where country and 

town will be celebrating 108 

years together from April 1-3. 

In between, among and 

around many of the haystacks, 

sheep shearing, livestock auctions, 

craft stalls and home industries 

exhibitions, country 

folk can also look forward to 

legendary, top class horse 

s h o w s. 

At the Bathurst 

Showgrounds, tradition is important 

and the horse section 

has through history been an 

integral part of the show. 

The horse section boasts a 

proud partnership with the 

Bathurst Agricultural Society 

(BAS) and has through history 

ensured the high standards of 

equestrian events and coaching 

continued. It is also important 

to sustain and grow the 

sport and the show has encouraged 

a new generation of 

South African equestrian 

lovers. With only a few weeks 

to go, entries are pouring in 

for the horse section of the 

Bathurst Show. 

It’s sure to be, like years before, 

one of the main attractions 

on the Eastern Cape calendar, 

attracting over 100 

horses and riders for the show 

jumping, showing and dressage 

classes. 

Starting a day early, various 

equestrian events start on 

Thursday March 31 and continue 

through until the last day 

of the show. 

Top show horses that regularly 

compete at national level 

will vie for championship honours 

under the direction of 

international judge Margie de 

V r y e. 

A crowd favourite on Saturday 

morning are the hunter 

classes, in which riders complete 

a course of testing obstacles 

and show a full on gallop 

round the arena. 

There will also be the six bar 

event, where a row of jumps 

are set higher and higher and 

horses are knocked out if they 

fault. The show jumping 

championships take place on 

S u n d a y. 

Little riders are well catered 

for with lots of fun classes including 

the ever popular fancy 

dress parade. 

For the first time, exhibition 

classes have been added for 

American saddles and 

boereperd horses, certainly 

adding a touch of glamour to 

the show. 

At another end of the showgrounds, 

men and women will 

be exhibiting the very best in 

terms of the home industries. 

Catalogues for home industries 

are available, and interested 

parties can source these 

from the Home Industries 

shop in Port Alfred, Sew 

Smart and the Bathurst Show

Categories include fresh 

produce, knitting, crocheting, 

art, photography, e m b r o i d e r y,

I hope you are in 

the mood for some 

armchair birding via 

this edition of the 

Chirp. Sit back, relax 

and enjoy, as we take 

a look at a common, 

yet interesting bird. 

The hamerkop is 

still quite common in 

our area, being found 

around dams, ponds, 

rivers, weirs and roadside 

puddles – anywhere 

it can find tadpoles, 

frogs, fish and 

i n s e c t s. 

It is usually seen either 

wading around in 

the shallow water, 

looking for the above 

mentioned prey, or 

cruising along the valleys 

and water courses 

with slow flapping and 

gliding flight. 

It is unmistakeable, 

and the combination 

of the bill and crest 

gives the head a hammer-like 

shape, which, 

of course is where the 

bird gets its name. 

The dull umberbrown 

plumage is 

why, once upon a 

time, it used to be 

called the “tufted umbre” 

in the late 1800s 

and early 1900s. 

Whatever the bird 

is called, it is a bit of 

an oddity as to which 

bird family it belongs. 

It is not a heron. It 

is not quite a true 

stork. Yet it looks and 

behaves like it could 

belong to either family. 

In other words, dit 

is sommer net 'n 

hamerkop! 

Probably one of the 

most fascinating 

things about this bird 

is the nest it builds.

dome structure placed

building this abode. 

In old nests that 

have fallen down, 

items such as clothes 

pegs, bicycle tyres, 

male underpants, 

paint brushes and 

rags, among many 

other unusual goodies, 

have been found. 

The hamerkop is a 

noisy bird, especially 

when giving territorial 

d i s p l a y s. 

A loud, “We k 

wek-wek werrrrrrrrr” 

call is given when 

pairs and flocks circle, 

jump, nod their heads 

and even “mockmount” 

each other. 

Single birds in flight 

utter a much softer, 

repeated, “wuk... 

wuk...” sound.

Eight, is set shortly after 

the American Civil War, 

when a pair of bounty 

hunters take their captives 

to Red Rock, a small town 

in Wyoming. 

Kurt Russell plays the 

role of “the hangman” 

John Ruth, who transports 

convicted murderess Daisy 

Domergue (Jennifer Jason 

Leigh) via stagecoach 

across the snowy landscape 

and attempting to outrun a 

blizzard that threatens to 

halt their journey. 

He stops the coach when 

bounty hunter Major 

Marquis Warren (Samuel 

L Jackson) asks for a ride. 

After some negotiation, 

Ruth allows Warren 

aboard but his three dead 

bounties are piled on the

Rock, the coach stops for 

former Lost-Causer militiaman 

Chris Mannix 

(Walton Goggins) who 

tells them he’ll be the new 

sheriff of town. 

With reluctance he also 

boards the stagecoach 

which manages to reach 

Minnie’s Haberdashery 

coach stop as the storm 

unleashes its full anger 

over the area. 

Once there, the coach 

passengers meet several 

nefarious characters including 

a Mexican named Bob 

(Demian Bichir), Oswaldo 

Mobray (Tim Roth) – a 

hangman responsible, he 

says, for the act of hanging 

convicted criminals – and 

Joe Gage (Michael 

Madsen). There is also 

General Sandy Smithers 

(Bruce Dern), an old 

Union general who has little 

time for anyone. 

As with other Tarantino 

films such as From Dusk 

Till Dawn and even 

Reservoir Dogs, the first 

half of the movie is fairly 

sedate, with little or no violence, 

and it seems as 

though everyone at Minnie’s 

is getting along. 

Then Ruth and Jackson 

take have some coffee and 

begin spewing blood. Immediately 

the mood changes 

and, as Ruth and Jackson 

writhe in agony, the 

truth comes out as to who 

the characters at Minnie’s 

actually are, and their reason 

for being there. That’s 

how Tarantino gets you. 

In typical Tarantino 

style, the action picks up 

and blood, guts and a considerable 

amount of foul 

language and racial slurs 

pour from the screen. 

The movie is definitely 

worth watching and, although 

it is long (three 

hours and seven minutes) 

and the action only really 

starts in the last third of the 

movie, it creates a certain 

amount of empathy for the 

characters, especially when 

we learn of their backgrounds 

and the real reasons 

they are at Minnie’s 

H a b e r d a s h e r y. 

Don’t take the kids to 

this one, or anyone of a 

nervous disposition. The 

rest of us will probably enjoy

Without a helpful lead from E/W, (eg. by either one leading a Heart) how does South 

manage to make 10 tricks in Spades? When the hand is carefully studied, it seems 

that E/W must make A K of Diamonds, a Club, and the King of Hearts. South has only 

one entry to dummy – the Jack of Spades - therefore cannot reach his established 

Hearts. This is a real conundrum – can anyone see a way out? 

South CAN eliminate a Diamond loser by reaching dummy via the Spade Jack and 

playing the A Q of Hearts, discarding 2 small Diamonds; a loser on loser play. The 8 of 

Clubs lead has set up the Club suit for South so now after he loses the one Diamond 

trick, he takes out the trumps and runs the Clubs. He has lost 1 Club trick, 1 Heart 

trick and 1 Diamond. Any better ideas?

There can surely be no prouder 

Grahamstown couple at the moment 

than Neil and Di Smuts, parents of 

Jon-Jon and Kelly, both cricketers 

who have put in some noteworthy 

performances of late on pitches 

around the country. The couple, 

whose sons attended Graeme 

College, has been inundated with 

congratulatory messages over the 

past fortnight. 

Jon-Jon, the elder of the Smuts 

brothers, was chosen as a member of 

the South African A team that met 

England in a T20 clash at Boland 

Park in Paarl on Wednesday last 

week and, on debut for the team, he 

scored 30 runs off 25 balls. In 

England’s turn at bat, he had a good 

spell of bowling despite being chosen 

primarily as a batsman. 

Playing for Eastern Province in a 

Sunfoil three-day match against Boland 

in Paarl a fortnight ago, Kelly 

Smuts made South African cricketing 

history. He took seven wickets 

for 36 runs in Boland’s first innings of 

205, and followed it up with 108 for 

EP in the team’s innings of 442. 

Then, in Boland’s second visit to the 

crease, the younger Smuts brother 

took six wickets, four of which came 

off consecutive deliveries to give him 

a hat-trick. In the process, Smuts became 

the first player to score a century 

and take 13 wickets in a 

first-class match in South Africa. 

As if this performance was not 

enough, Smuts went on to score another 

century (109) for Eastern Province 

in their Sunfoil three-day match 

against Gauteng at St George’s Park 

in Port Elizabeth four days later. 

Well done the Smuts family!

SERIOUS SCIENCE AT SCIFEST 

Over the years the majority of people 

attending Scifest Africa in Grahamstown 

have been primary school 

and high school pupils. But, say the 

organisers, don’t think for a moment 

Scifest is exclusively for schoolchildren. 

There are some really interesting 

and thought-provoking talks and 

lectures on offer. Among them are: 

“Solving the technological challenges 

of the journey to Mars” by Jim 

Adams of the National Aeronautics 

and Space Administration (Nasa) in 

America; “Telescopes as time machines” 

by Case Rijsdijk of the 

Astronomical Society of Southern 

Africa; “Demo to Democracy – how 

science communication can change 

the world” by Wendy Sadler of 

UK-based Science Made Simple; and 

“The Square Kilometre Array 

(SKA) radio telescope – searching 

for the origins of the universe” by 

Shagita Gounden of the SKA in 

South Africa. 

INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE 

The 2016 Scifest Africa national science 

festival takes place in Grahamstown 

from March 2-8. It will feature 

content, speakers and shows from 

across the globe, says festival media 

officer Stephane Meintjies. The 

British High Commissioner in South 

Africa is sponsoring two lectures, by 

two women from the UK – physicist 

Wendy Sadler and archaeologist Ella 

Al-Shamahi. Another attraction 

from the UK is Dr Stephen Ashworth 

from the University of East 

Anglia who will present a science 

show titled Kitchen Chemistry. 

The Bloodhound Project will showcase 

the Bloodhound Supersonic Car 

designed to travel at a speed of 

1 690km/h. Other countries represented 

at the festival will be 

Switzerland, Australia, Germany, 

India and the USA, which will provide 

speakers from Nasa and the 

National Institute of Aerospace. 

OLYMPIAN GRUB AND MUSIC 

A former Grahamstonian says he has 

happy memories of the Olympia 

Café in Bathurst Street (mentioned 

in last week’s column). He says he 

enjoyed their “pie, chips and gravy, 

finished off with hot chocolate fudge 

and, of course, coins in the jukebox”!

WRETCHED ON WORCESTER 

One of the busier streets in town is 

Worcester Street, between Milner 

and Somerset. But have you noticed 

how bad the section is in the dip near 

The Highlander? The road surface is 

crumbling and is riddled with potholes. 

That’s another one to be 

added to the long list for the road repairs 

team. 

BUILDERS AND WALKERS 

On more than one occasion in this 

column over the years I’ve mentioned 

an elderly lady out walking in 

town. I used to come across her while 

out on my own walks, or when driving 

past. She is Mrs Crimora Heunis, 

but I haven’t seen her out walking for 

about three years. A short while ago 

I received an e-mail from Ernst 

Linstrom of Bushmans River Mouth 

dealing with another matter, but in it 

he also wrote about the Heunis family, 

something I found most interesting 

– I trust you will too. 

Ernst Linstrom’s wife Mariana (nee 

Heunis) grew up in Grahamstown 

and is the daughter of Neels Heunis 

of CM Heunis Building Contractors. 

His father (Neels senior) started the 

business and it is still in the Heunis 

family, owned by Neels Heunis junior. 

It continues to operate from 1 

Glanville Street and is one of the oldest 

businesses still operating in 

Grahamstown. Many landmark 

buildings in Grahamstown have been 

built by CM Heunis construction – 

we pass them daily as we criss-cross 

town on our daily trips. 

In his mail, Linstrom mentions Mariana’s 

grandmother Crimora who, at 

an advanced age, still walked around 

Grahamstown, fairly briskly at that! 

He writes: “We brought her (Crimora) 

down to Bushmans three years 

ago and she is now in Dolphin Coast 

Nursing Home in Kenton-on-Sea. 

She turns 90 this year and still walked 

until two years ago when she fell.” 

THE SUTTNERS’ ODEON 

The recent mention of Lockie 

Suttner in this column reminded 

Derrick Fellows of Port Alfred of 

many a Saturday morning spent at 

the Odeon Bioscope in Bathurst 

Street – Lockie managed the Odeon 

with his brother Max. There was a 

third brother, but he was not a 

Grahamstown resident. 

On a trip to East London with two 

friends in the late ’50s, Derrick 

Fellows stopped over at the hotel in 

Peddie which he thinks was the 

Royal Hotel. He recalls: “The owner 

was the spitting image of Lockie Suttner, 

so much so we asked him whether 

they were related, and he confirmed 

they were indeed brothers.” 

Lockie and Max Suttner went on to 

run the Carlton Hotel, according to 

Fellows, and this was later converted 

into the Carlton Centre. 

Fellows says: “Max died relatively 

young, and I don’t know if Lockie 

was involved in the conversion of the 

hotel into a shopping centre.”

sport to fight crime. 

This saw more than 100 enthusiastic 

youngsters from 

various parts of Ndlambe taking 

part in sporting activities 

in Kenton-on-Sea on Saturday 


The Sport Against Crime 

tournament, named after 

Eastern Cape anti-apartheid 

stalwart and former sports 

minister Steve Tshwete, is an 

annual programme organised 

by the department of safety 

and liaison in partnership 

with SAPS and the department 

of sport and recreation. 

February has been designated 

safety month and every 

year young people converge 

for their favourite sporting 

codes, away from a possible 

life of crime and drugs, Port 

Alfred police spokesman 

Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula 

said. 

This year, soccer and netball 

matches took place at the 

Ekuphumleni stadium and 

school netball courts respectively 

throughout the day. 

Teams made up of youths 

from Kenton, Bathurst, 

Alexandria, Nemato and 

Seafield took part in the event. 

Officials from the departments 

and the police said the 

aim was to draw the attention 

of young people away from a 

life of alcohol and crime to a 

life of sport, which not only 

kept them safe but also fit and 

h e a l t h y. 

“With the programme we 

aim to lower crime levels and 

promote a healthy lifestyle,” 

safety and liaison department 

official Luthando Dastile 

said. 

“Young people wander because 

they have nothing better 

to do, and with sport they 

can be kept busy doing something 

constructive.” 

Sport also helped instill discipline 

in young people, 

Dastile said.

Alexandria community policing 

official Constable Andiswa 

Mogorosi stressed the 

need to restore the community’s 

trust in the police. 

“With these projects we are 

looking to create a partnership 

and get the police closer 

to the people, because if we 

are to win the fight against

from Alexandria said: 

“Youngsters must take part in 

sport so that we can avoid getting 

involved in bad things.” 

Xolela Mjuza, 17, a Grade 

12 pupil at Kuyasa Combined 

School in Nemato, said: 

“Sport keeps one away from 

crime and rape, police support 

us and this is a great opportunity 

for young people.” 

After all the excitement 

and entertainment, 

Alexandria were named the 

soccer champs and Nemato 

the netball champs. They will 

both represent the cluster at a 

district competition in 

Jansenville in the near future.

was always happy to take part 

in sport and wished more 

young people could get involved 

in sport and keep away 

from crime.

February 16: The weather really had a bad turn for the 34 

participating members of Tuesday’s ladies’ section competition. 

It blew gale force to begin with and ended with a healthy shower 

soaking those still on the golf course. The competition was an 

individual stableford for the Port Alfred High School Trophy, 

sponsored by Viv Jordan. 

The new holder of the cup is Margie Siegers who defied the 

debilitating conditions to card a fine 39 points. Nevertheless she 

was only one point ahead of Lizzie Lambrechts’ 38 who counted 

out Debbie Longhurst on the same score. 

The long swinging Glynn Renecle hit the longest drive on the 

18th in the lower handicap section with Lynne Lake doing 

likewise for those with more generous handicaps. 

There were no two-clubs during the afternoon. 

Sue Roll’s drive was closest to the pin on Top Carpets’ sixth 

with Margie Siegers closest on Harcourts’ eighth and Yvonne 

Hill on Wimpy’s 11th. Both Margie and Debbie shot nett 69,

February 20: Hot, dry and gale force westerly winds resulted in 

a low turnout of just 14 players in the weekly Saturday morning 

mixed two-to-count stableford alliance. 

The conditions were most debilitating and this was evident in 

the scores with just the 78 points carded by Gift Gardner, Sue 

Kennedy and Fanie Smit being sufficient to win. Second placed 

Steve Kennedy, Lynn West, Brian and Margie Reid were well 

behind on 69, just pipping the recipients of the Energade drinks 

Heather van Harmelen, Liz Mangham and Mike Brown on 68. 

Gift coped best of all with the tempest by netting a hard fought 

69. She was also nearest to the pin on the eighth to win the 

sponsor’s bottle of wine. There were no two-clubs. 

KGB Results 

Tuesday February 16: Tuesday dawned just another one of 

those cool, overcast days with just enough westerly wind to 

take into account when selecting club choice. Forty-one players 

turned out for the two-to-count stableford alliance drawn into 

three two-balls and eight four balls. 

A massive 96 points carded by winners Vino Bearzi, Wilton 

Adcock, Mike Brown and Cliff Roberts proved to be too good for 

the rest of the field. In fact second placed Peter Murray, Tom 

Tagg and visitors Brian and Loretta Barnett were all of six points 

in arrears on 90. 

Hugh Holmes, Dale Wisener, Richard Laing 

and the fair Rosie Calmeyer-Leach struggled 

considerably and only managed 77 points, 

insufficient to avoid the dreaded Hamer en 

Sukkel. 

Andy Manson, Gerald Churchley, Dale 

Wisener, John Crandon and Peter Murray all 

sank birdies on the sixth whilst Cliff Roberts 

managed a two-club on the par three 11th. 

The best nett scores of the day were carded 

by Paul Fryer, Peter Reed (66), Cliff Roberts, Peter Murray, 

Loretta Barnett (68), Wilton Adcock and Gerald Churchley (69). 

Friday February 19: A hot and sunny morning was just the job 

for the 36 KGB players who turned out to play the usual 

two-to-count Stableford alliance in nine four balls. 

Gavin Richards, Eric Segers, Paul Fryer and Mo Marsay shared 

the winners’ spoils with Angus MacDonald, Dale Wisener, 

Martin Lambrechts and David Groenewald, both covies carding 

87 points. 

At the bottom of the points list on 77, Mike Dobbs, Mike 

Beaumont, Vino Bearzi and Heinz Czepluch found themselves 

sharing the 19th hole with that dreaded icon, the Hamer en 

Sukkel. 

Bryan Robinson and Martin Lambrechts both made birdies on 

the par three sixth. There were only two net scores of note, 

Danny Tarpani’s 68 and Martin Lambrechts’ 69.

croquet with us on Saturday, and 

on his birthday, too!

players has been completed 

and the revised list is also 

on the notice board. This 

re-grading is always done 

twice a year. The next date 

will be just before our AGM

Last Friday, saw 18 teams 

playing in the monthly sponsored 

Personal Trust Trips. 

This was the first time that, 

as a trial, no limit was placed 

on the teams’ total grading, 

which was previously restricted 

to a maximum of 8. 

The winners for the day, 

were Bill Bedford, Helen 

Birch and Sue Pautz bringing 

in a score of 23 + 20. 

Second were Gerrie Aldag 

with Peter McPhee and 

Tewie du Plessis, with 22 + 

19, and third were Rob Croly 

with Gerry van Heerden and 

Brian Aldag, with 21 + 16. 

Two teams pulled in several 

carry-over end winning 

scores.

The Eastern Areas (EA) 

men’s first and second 

league rounds 1 and 2 were 

played at Albany last 

Sunday. At day’s end Port 

Alfred first league team won 

two and lost two but managed 

to pick up the 2 bonus 

points. Port Alfred second 

league team won one and 

lost three, picking up the aftsecond 

place went to Trevor 

Frost and his team, and third 

place went to Gordon Goff 

and his team.

played last Tuesday and 

drew a good turnout to the

on the same day, starting at 

1pm. Good bowling, everyone. 

The Radue-sponsored competition 

will be held on 

Saturday February 27. The 

Ocean Basket-sponsored 

competition will be held on 

Tuesday March 8. With the 

cooler weather we hope to 

see excellent turnouts for 

these events.

Kowie Bowling Club 

Last Tuesday we played the 

Megabucks competition 

with a very good turnout. 

The competition was won by 

James Fox’s team of Tony 

Brown, Theresa Coetser 

and Ron Smith who defeated 

Ed Hosecks team of 

fours to take home the 

Megabucks. The runner-up 

for the afternoon was 

Delene Deenik’s team who 

defeated Harold Bodill’s 

team. 

Thursday was the first round 

of our inter-club competition, 

the Kenton/ Kowie and the 

Bess Tweedie Cup which 

was played at Kowie Club. 

This competition is played 

bi-monthly between the two 

clubs. 

Kenton got off to a very 

good start this round, after 

winning three men’s games, 

with Kowie only managing 

one. In the ladies’ section 

Kenton also won both of 

their games. So this gives 

Kenton a good lead in both 

sections of the competition. 

On Saturday we played 

Snowball competition with a 

good field. With this, some 

of the teams are more likely 

to have the same score on 

the selected ends and this is 

what happened on the day. 

The competition rolled over 

to next week with another 

competition fee being added 

to the kitty. 

Ladies remember next 

Thursday will be the first 

round for 2016 of our ever 

popular Ocean Basket Competition. 

It has been moved 

one week ahead because of 

the competition with Kenton 

last week. 

The Men’s League competition 

second round was 

played at Albany on Sunday. 

Having not been there I cannot 

give you results. Our first 

league teams had a bye this 

round so were not there and 

I did not make it to 

Grahamstown, but our 2nd 

League squad played 

against Albany and in the 

morning session we won 

both games, taking full 

points (5). 

In the turnaround game on 

Sunday afternoon, our A 

team lost and our B team 

had a good win to finish the 

session with a positive shot 

profit. This gives Kowie 8 

points for the day and with 

our first round 7 gives us a 

total of 15 points after two 

rounds.

ON THE BEACH: One of 70 riders on the three-day Fat 

Attack Beach Race from Coega to Kidd’s Beach, East 

London, Michael Paans, was still going strong when he hit 

East Beach, Port Alfred, on Saturday morning

N a first of its 

kind cycling 

event, the 

Eastern Cape 

shoreline was the 

place where 70 riders 

mounted their Rapid 

Fat Cat Pro Bikes and 

rode from Coega, just 

outside Port 

Elizabeth, to East 

London’s Kidd’s 

Beach on a gruelling 

three-day race. 

Although billed as 

the Fat Attack Beach 

Race, the competitors 

were not racing 

against each other but

This was the first 

ever three-day Fat 

bike event and was 

staged on the pristine 

beaches of the Eastern 

Cape from Friday 

February 19 to Sunday 


Starting inland at 

Nanaga the 70 riders 

descended onto the 

beaches of Woody 

Cape, east of Port 

Elizabeth, and navigated 

their way 

around the cliffs with 

the pressures of an incoming 

tide. They finished 

the first day at 

Kenton-on-Sea about 

90km later, on the 

banks of the Bushman’s 

River. 

Day two saw a 30 

knot south-westerly 

tail wind with riders 

leaving Kenton-on- 

Sea and arriving at the 

West Beach helipad in 

Port Alfred where 

they took a breather 

and inspected their 

bikes, refuelling on 

drinks supplied by 

Stenden South Africa, 

Sunshine Coast 

Tourism and The 

Cycle Asylum. 

Refreshed, the cyclists 

headed to East 

Beach across the Nico 

Malan Bridge. With 

the wind building to a 

crescendo, and the 

sand buffeting them 

from all sides, they 

continued their journey 

onward, the iridescent 

Indian Ocean 

to their right as they 

headed toward the 

Fish River, finally settling 

down for the 

evening at the 

Mpekweni Beach 

Resort, having covered 

another 72 km. 

The last day was adventure-packed, 

with 

riders crossing the 

mighty Keiskamma 

River with their bikes 

on giant stand-up paddle 

boards. 

When they reached 

the Chalumna River 

30km on, the ski-boat 

club ferried the riders 

and their bikes across 

the river. From there 

they headed to 

Kayser’s Beach then 

on to the finish at 

Kidd’s Beach. This 

was an easier day at 

only 47km. 

Perhaps surprisingly, 

only one rider 

dropped out over the 

three-day period. 

Making the event 

unique was that Red 

Cherry Adventures 

supplied all the competitors 

with alloy Fat 

Cat Pro bikes so all 

the riders had to do 

was bring their cleats 

and then they were off 

on their travels. 

“They were picked 

up at the airport , 

transferred to hotels , 

bussed to the start and 

spoilt rotten for three 

d a y s, ” said Red 

Cherry’s Siska van der 

Bijl. On arriving at the 

finish they were transported 

to East 

London airport and 

the balance of riders 

flew back to Port 

Elizabeth. 

“It was a real hassle 

free weekend,” Va n 

der Bijl said. 

Red Cherry now 

owns the fleet of Fat 

bikes and intends to 

host many other adventure 

rides. Red 

Cherry will also organise 

customised 

tours on request.
