Known as the most picturesque harbor in the 

Northwest, Gig Harbor is an easily accessible, 

relaxing destination with lots to see and do. 

Gig Harbor offers shopping along the waterfront as well 

as Uptown, fine and casual dining, and overnight stays in 

small to midsize inns and bed and breakfasts. 

Yachting is big here with private marinas and a public 

boat dock. Kayak, paddleboard and boat rentals are 

available, as are harbor boat tours. The community’s 

fishing village heritage is evidenced at the Harbor 

History Museum and public landmarks. Several top golf 

courses, including Chambers Bay and Gold Mountain 

are a short drive away, while trails, parks and charming 

neighborhoods invite walking and cycling. Delightful 

festivals and inspiring events add to the mix.

towns for culture, heritage and charm and home to 

wonderfully appointed inns and hotels with many options

This summer,

on Pierce Transit 

Pierce Transit runs vintage-style 

trolleys between downtown 

and the Uptown shopping center — a 

fun trip both for locals and visitors. 

Three old-fashioned trolleys on 

wheels have been outfitted for the 

service. To complete the nostalgic 

look, the trolley conductors wear 

special uniforms and announce 

many of the stops the old-fashioned 

way — via the PA system. 

The trolley runs every 30 minutes 

and has extended hours until 9 p.m. 

on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. 

Rides cost 50 cents one way or $1 for 

an all-day pass and are free to people 

with a Regional Reduced Fare Permit. 

Dogs and bicyclists are welcome, too.

two hours on Saturdays on mostly 

flat grades as a one-way trip through 

downtown Gig Harbor at scenic points 

of interest. Wednesday’s one hour tour 

is geared for adults and will end with an 

optional tasting at the Heritage Distilling

First Saturday Art Walk every

This free event allows art 

enthusiasts to stroll through 

galleries featuring artist

and displays. The Art Walk

Winniford, is the owner of JW 

Restaurant in Gig Harbor.

But Winniford didn’t stop with his 

restaurant. His newest dream-cometrue

Recently opened is Winniford’s JW 

at the Boatyard food trolley next to 

Skansie Brothers Park. 

“We are looking forward to 

providing Gig Harbor with something 

new, fun and exciting,” said Jamie 

Lindsey, general manager at JW 

Restaurant. “Food trucks are 

becoming more and more popular, 

so we want to be one of the first food 

trucks in the harbor.” 

The food trolley is just that — a 

refurbished shiny red trolley that will 

serve seafood-focused plates. 

“The chefs will focus on seafood 

— lobster rolls, calamari, salmon 

chowder, also non-seafood brats, 

pulled pork sandwiches, ice cream. 

There’s also a kids menu, gluten-free 

items, salads, grilled salmon and 

more,” Lindsey said. 

With all of their gourmet cuisine, 

Lindsey said it is more of an outdoor 

restaurant than a food truck. 

“There is also a large undercover 

area where you can sit, and even a 

fireplace,” Lindsey said. 

If there’s one thing Washington

breweries and distilleries, and Gig

Charming Gig Harbor not only

and modern areas, but also works 

hard to preserve the history and 

culture that makes it so special. 

The waterfront is an integral part 

of that historic, hometown feel, and 

offers so much for visitors to take in 

and take part in. 

Free waterfront tour 

The city’s free Waterfront Guided 

Walking Tour is one thing a visitor 

cannot pass up. This two-hour, 

1.3-mile tour follows along the 

downtown waterfront and stops at 

10 historical locations while two 

volunteer guides narrate history 

many have long forgotten. 

Last year was the first year of 

the tour, and Rahna Lovrovich, a 

Downtown Waterfront Alliance tour 

developer and city council member

feedback organizers received. 

“Our first walk was in June last 

year, and we did them all summer 

long,” Lovrovich said. “We got a great 

response. People came from out of 

town, as well as longtime residents 

— both were really interested in what 

we had to say. We accomplished our 

goal of highlighting our town and 

other things you can do.” 

Since it went so well, the tour will 

stay the same this year. Lovrovich 

said organizers are even thinking of 

expanding it. 

“We are putting together a 

subcommittee to look into the 

potential to adding another type 

of walk or revamping the original 

one in the future, depending on the 

response this year,” she said. 

Not only do visitors of any age get 

to hear tall tales and history of the 

area, but they also get information 

from an expert guide with Harbor 

WildWatch, who will give visitors a 

hands-on experience with wildlife. 

Tour stops include the historic 

Skansie Netshed, Eddon Boatyard, 

Austin Estuary and Donkey Creek 

Park’s salmon stream, Arabella’s 

Landing Pier, and more. 

Tours will be held on most 

Saturdays at 10 a.m. June through 

August. All you have to do to 

participate is meet at the Maritime 

Pier (3003 Harborview Drive) before 

the 10 a.m. start time. 

“We’re pretty willing and flexible 

to get more volunteers for special 

tours if there is a group that can’t 

make it on Saturday, or if they need a 

shortened tour,” Lovrovich said. 

Afterwards, stick around for some 

lunch and shopping, or take the 

trolley back to the starting point. 

“We are looking forward to another

things these local organizations offer 

which enrich the waterfront. 

Puget Sound Past 

and Present 

Harbor WildWatch, based in Gig 

Harbor, aims for its educational 

programs to inspire all generations to 

become stewards in the preservation 

of natural marine resources. 

The nonprofit organization 

accomplishes this through various 

programs, most of which include 

observing and touching actual 


marine life from the harbor. The 

organization’s newest location at the 

Skansie House just opened a new lab, 

with semi-permanent exhibits and 

rotating themes and topics. 

The current theme is “Puget Sound 

Past and Present,” and includes 

experiments ranging from one to 20 

minutes for visitors of all ages. 

“Our current lab includes exhibits 

on currents, glaciers, microplastics, 

PH and density testing and more,” 

said Lauren Sewell, development 

associate at Harbor WildWatch. 

“There’s also a display room next to 

the Skansie House about salmon, the 

food web and Orcas.”

also part of the maritime gallery so it 

is viewable during all museum hours

“Restoration is a slow process, but 

once complete the ship will remain 

at the museum for viewing,” Dick 

said. “Visitors can actually walk on 

the deck in certain areas.” 

Dick welcomes guests to visit the 

museum to see the restoration in 

progress, or to sign up to use their 

time and talents to make finishing 

the ship a reality. 

Not your traditional 

playground 

If you’re looking for more kidfriendly 

activities, the progressive 

experience of the Maritime Playzone 

never gets old for little ones, and is 

easy to access as well. 

This all-ability, all-inclusive and 

accessible playground is one-of-akind, 

offering children the experience 

of boarding a Gig Harbor fishing boat. 

The boat is modeled after purse 

seiners used by the local Gig Harbor 

fleet and is ADA-accessible, allowing 

all kids to take captain of the ship. 

Besides these available activities, 

there are also year-round events 

continually being held on the 

living waterfront that is Gig Harbor, 

including concerts, a farmers market, 

movie nights, wine and food festivals 

and so much more.

Shenandoah project 

Another thing to checkout on the 

waterfront is the Shenandoah boat 

restoration project at the Harbor 

History Museum. The Shenandoah is 

a 65-foot boat built in 1925 that has 

lost its keel as rot and age have taken 

over. 

In the midst of being completed 

by the Harbor History Museum and 

dozens of volunteers, the restoration 

program aims to completely restore 

the antique boat into working order. 

The rusty boat will be restored 

to its original condition using the 

original craftsmanship and materials. 

“This boat is unique to the 

area and was built by the Skansie 

Ship Building Company here in 

Gig Harbor,” said Alphid Dick, the 

museum’s marketing and events 

coordinator. “It was used for salmon

Historic Netsheds 

As early as 1910, Gig Harbor’s first 

netsheds began appearing along the 

waterfront. These simple structures, 

many constructed with rough, handhewn 

fir were used by local fishermen 

to store nets and fishing gear. 

As the town grew, many netsheds 

were displaced by new development

Fox Island Historical 

Society and Museum 

There are more than 3,000 artifacts 

on display in dioramas, showcases 

and freestanding exhibits at the Fox 

Island Museum. Among them is a 

display describing the life of former 

Gov. Dr. Dixy Lee Ray, the largest 

collection of pulley blocks in the 

state, Indian artifacts and several 

antique gasoline engines in working 

order. Visit the museum to see a 

topographic relief map showing ports 

of call and shipwrecks. In May of 

2015, the Fox Island Historical Society 

received notification that the 1908 

log cabin, originally owned by the 

Lila Acheson family (later married 

DeWitt Wallace and co-founded The

At 3207 Harborview Drive, 

near Jerisich Dock, you will 

find information about three 

friends fishing on Puget Sound 

when they were forced into a 

protected harbor to wait out a 

storm, only to eventually call the 

area they discovered, home. 

FROM CROATIA TO MILLVILLE 

At the Dorotich Public Dock, near 

3323 Harborview Drive, is where 

the first homes in the harbor were 

built and the town of Millville was 

established. In 2014, Gig Harbor city 

officials, Washington state leaders, 

and local residents welcomed the 

then-Prime Minister of Croatia 

Zoran Milanovic in a public 

ceremony including a tour of the 

Millville District. Gig Harbor’s ties 

to Croatia remain strong today. 

HEART OF THE HARBOR 

At the corner of Harborview Drive 

and North Harborview, you will 

find the heart of the harbor. The 

community’s last and longest 

running sawmill called this corner 

home for close to 100 years, 

and where the Austin Ericksonstyle 

log homes originated. 

FROM VALLEY TO BAY 

Crescent Creek Park sits at the 

northernmost corner of the bay 

and is where families began to 

homestead throughout Crescent 

Valley in the late 1880s. Today, 

families still visit the park and play 

on the all-inclusive play structure 

while admiring the wood carving 

by local artist Jeff Samudosky.

Race for 

a soldier 

In its 6th year, annual event provides 

support for wounded service members 

trying to reintegrate into life at home 

The emotional blow associated 

with the loss of a child can 

lead to a wide range of psychological 

problems, such as withdrawing 

from the world. Leslie Mayne, who 

lost her son Private First Class Kyle 

Farr in 2009 to the effects of post 

traumatic stress and a traumatic 

brain injury, instead became a 

beacon of hope by transforming the 

lives of military heroes struggling 

with these same injuries. 

In 2011, her decision led to the first 

Race for a Soldier Half Marathon in 

Gig Harbor. 

Race for a Soldier now welcomes 

more than 1,700 military, local and 

regional participants and has laid the 

groundwork for a larger vision. 

In 2013, Leslie and a close-knit core 

of friends created the Permission 

to Start Dreaming Foundation, and 

in 2014 the Foundation received 

its designation as a nonprofit 

organization. Made up of family 

members, close friends, former 

military and local business leaders, 

a 15-member board now guides the 

foundation’s direction and future 

plans, to build a permanent Veteran’s 

Therapeutic Retreat in the Pacific 

Northwest. 

“The race has been great for 

my sister, family and the whole 

community,” said Kenny Mayne, ESPN 

commentator and PTSD Foundation 

board member. “I was humbled 

and moved by hundreds of people 

getting ready before sunrise. All these 

strangers showed up, motivated by 

different reasons, to do this one great 

thing together. We left that day with 

a blueprint for doing it bigger and 

better. Returning vets and equally 

as important — their families — are 

really benefiting.” 

Data released by the Department 

of Veterans Affairs reported that 

young veterans, just out of the service 

and receiving health care from the 

government, committed suicide at 

nearly three times the rate of activeduty 

troops in recent years, according 

to a recent USA Today report. The 

foundation’s mission is to bring 

the rate down and eventually help 

eliminate it. 

Through its efforts, the foundation 

has contributed nearly $145,000 to 

regional therapy programs and has 

set its vision on broader goals for the 

future. It is actively discussing ideas 

such as creating a vetted resource list 

of therapy programs for soldiers and 

their families, weekend workshops 

on coping therapy strategies and a 

vision for a retreat center for service 

members and their families to gain 

valuable healing time and tools. 

Race for a Soldier has rallied a 

powerful force to support its military 

community in the South Puget 

Sound region. Our vision for every

Trails 

The Kitsap Peninsula National 

Water Trails (KPNTW) wraps around 

371 miles of spectacular shoreline 

from Foul Weather Bluff on the north, 

Bainbridge Island on the east, Gig 

Harbor and the Tacoma Narrows 

Bridge on the south, and the waters 

of Hood Canal on the west. 

The trails travel around the 

shorelines of three large land masses: 

Kitsap Peninsula, Key Peninsula and 

Bainbridge Island, and are located 

primarily in Kitsap County, as well 

as Mason and Pierce Counties. 

Currently, 13 separate trails, designed 

as a continuous, seamless regional 

experience, make up the network. 

Each trail can be experienced as a day 

trip. Trail amenities include access 

sites, boat launches, day-use areas, 

fishing accesses and camping areas. 

Water trails can also serve as venues 

that create educational experiences. 

In 2014, the Kitsap Peninsula 

National Water Trails received a 

grant from the National Park Service 

for staff support to assist in the 

development of a comprehensive

If you’re looking to impress a

harbor’s newest water attraction — 

the Gig Harbor Gondola. 

Identical to the boats that row 

around the water-soaked city of 

Venice, Gig Harbor now has its own 

gondola experience. 

Synco started his business in 

the harbor last year after rowing 

gondolas for 14 years and even 

traveling to Venice himself. He 

says his gondola is one of only 26 

authentic boats in the U.S. 

“I was rowing for two years before I 

went to Venice, and when I got there 

the gondoliers in Venice taught me 

so much,” he said. “It became an 

obsession. I’ve studied and practiced 

for many years.” 

He hopes that people fall in as 

much love with this centuries-old 

means of transportation as he has. 

“It’s been a real passion of mine 

and a unique skill to have,” he said. 

“It’s extremely relaxing. I’ve had 

people get off and say they felt like 

they just had a massage.” 

During his hourlong cruise, Synco 

offers appetizers and encourages 

riders to bring their own food and 

wine for a real Italian experience. He 

provides cups, ice and napkins for his 

guests on the water. 

He also encourages people to get 

creative. 

“I can drop off or pick up at any 

local restaurant or bar,” he said. 

“I’ve done messages in a bottle for 

people. I can have flowers available.

boating — offering 11 years of safe

“Our No. 1 goal is to get people

on the water,” Gaylene said. “I don’t 

believe you have seen Gig Harbor 

until you’ve been on the water.” 

Not only will guests enjoy the 

water, but also the harbor’s sea life. 

Last year Gaylene said they saw 

humpback whales and a white-sided 

dolphin. 

“The dolphin was playing with 

the whales — jumping over them,” 

Gaylene said. “It was a rare and 

amazing experience.” 

The McCrays can seat up to six 

people on their vessel and provide 

sparkling apple cider, gourmet 

cupcakes or a fruit option for their 

guests. They offer personalized tours 

of various lengths and destinations, 

all sure to please anyone.

trail is a 16-foot-wide paved asphalt pedestrian 

route exclusively for nonmotorized uses. Trail is 

great for kids of all ages south of Olympic; hillier 

between Grandview and 96th Street. 

Fox Island Fishing Pier 

1453 Ozette Drive, southeast end of Fox 

Island 

5.5 acres. The picturesque fishing spot includes 

a concrete fishing pier accessible via paved 

pathway and handrails, restroom and picnic 

area. 

Hales Pass PARK 

3507 Ray Nash Drive NW and 36th Street 

4 acres includes a rustic 1938 CCC building and 

picnic shelter, tennis courts and a baseball field. 

The site has served as a school and community 

hall, and is available for meetings, classes and 

social gatherings. 

Harbor Family Park

19 acres, will eventually become a park with ball 

fields, active recreation, and natural forest areas. 

Primitive trails currently cross the property. 

McCormick Forest park 

10301 Bujacich Road NW 

122 acres. Has abundant wildlife with over four 

miles of trails of varying difficulty for walkers, 

runners, cyclists and horses. Trails wander 

through old growth forest and offer views 

down into the McCormick Creek canyon. A 

meadow with picnic tables is 100 yards from 

the entrance. 

Madrona Links Golf Course

79 acres. An 18-hole Ken Tyson designed 

course. The course includes a pro shop and restaurant.

Narrows Park

34 acres. Offers over 1,000 feet of Tacoma 

Narrows shoreline access, excellent fishing and 

views of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Entrance 

sign leads down a paved road taking visitors 

inside the park and its partially landscaped 

grounds. A paved path winds toward a gazebo 

and the sandy rock beach. Two telescopes provide 

up-close views of the bridge and beach. 

ROTARY BARK PARK 


Park in Fire District #5 headquarters lot. Hours 

are 7 a.m. to dusk. This 97-acre natural area 

contains a 15-acre off-leash dog area with over 

one mile of fenced trails. Features off-leash area 

with play meadow, paved parking, porta-potty, 

refuse bags. 

Rosedale Park 

& COMMUNITY HALL 

8050 86th Ave. NW and Rosedale Street 

This 2-acre site is located across from Rosedale 

Market (formerly Templeton’s or Eide’s Store) 

Rosedale Playfield has a combined fenced grass 

youth soccer field, a grass 200-foot softball 

diamond, two outdoor tennis courts and a 

half-basketball court. Rosedale Hall is located 

adjacent to the tennis courts. This facility is 

currently operated by PenMet Parks and available 

for reservations. The 2,400-square-foot 

building provides 2,000 square feet of meeting 

space with a 400-square-foot kitchen and can 

be rented for community and organizational 

events. 

Sehmel Homestead Park 

10123 78th Ave. and Sehmel Drive NW 

98 acres. Includes Boundless Playground, artificial 

turf soccer/football/lacrosse field, Boeing 

Mariners Care baseball field, two softball fields, 

tennis and basketball courts, 1,000-person 

amphitheater, 100-person pavilion, picnic areas, 

open grass meadow, heritage garden, pond, 

over 4 miles of trail and 76 acres of natural area. 

SUNRISE BEACH PARK 

10015 Sunrise Beach Drive NW 

The 6 acre beachfront portion of the park 

includes designated parking areas, six picnic 

tables, day-use areas, 2 miles of walking trails 

and forest paths with views of Mount Rainier 

and Puget Sound, and beach access to the 

2,400 linear foot shoreline of Colvos Passage. 

The beach provides access to a popular scuba 

diving destination. 

TUBBY’S TRAIL DOG PARK 

1701 14th Ave. NW 

Park hours are 7 a.m. to dusk. Small dogs offleash 

area with play meadow for dogs under 25 

pounds and a large dog off-leash area with play 

meadow. Additional features include parking, 

porta-potty, and refuse bags. Tubby was a black, 

male Cocker Spaniel that fell into fame when 

Galloping Gertie collapsed on Nov. 7, 1940. As 

the only victim of that great disaster, Tubby has 

earned a special place in the hearts of many. 

Wollochet Bay Estuary 

Wollochet Drive and Artondale Drive NW 

Undeveloped but includes 20 acres of forest 

and marshland with 854 linear feet of shoreline 

where the confluence of Artondale and Wollochet 

creeks meet the saltwater marsh and 

estuary area of Wollochet Bay. 


KeyPen Parks 

360 TRAILS 

State Route 302 at 114th Street 

This 360-acre property located on the north 

end of the Key Peninsula includes over 3.5 miles 

of trails accessible to walkers, equestrians and 

mountain bikers (nonmotorized). The main 

trial is a 2.5 mile loop that takes about an hour 

to walk, and smaller trails cut back and forth 

through the meadow. There are six benches 

along the main loop, a trailhead kiosk with map, 

and limited parking space at the trailhead. 

Rocky Creek 

Conservation Area 

State Route 302 at 150th Avenue 

The area covers over 224 acres of park, open 

space and conservation land and is managed 

jointly with Pierce County and Key Pen Parks for 

enjoyment of existing ecosystems. Rocky Creek 

has over 3 miles of walking (nonmotorized) 

trails, two benches, a trailhead kiosk with map, 

and limited parking space at the trailhead. The 

property consists of wetlands, two streams and 

various plants and wildlife. 

Volunteer Park 

5514 Key Peninsula Highway N. 

(KeyPen Parks District Office location) 

This 20-acre park includes four ball fields, main 

field with lights, skate park, basketball court, 

6 lit horseshoe pits, walking trail, covered 

picnic shelter, restrooms, limited camping 

sites, concession building, playground, meeting 

room, maintenance shop and a 9-hole disc golf 

course. 

Maple Hollow Park 

4411 Van Beek Road KPN, Lakebay 

This 58-acre site offers a circular trail with midpoint 

access to a stretch of beach along Puget 

Sound with views of Mount Rainier. This park 

includes a walking trail, picnic area, and walking 

access to the water. 

Home Park

This is the first neighborhood park on the Key 

Peninsula, complete with a playground, toddler 

area, picnic shelter, adult swing and restroom. 

This park is a tremendous asset to the community 

and is enjoyed by all ages. 

Taylor Bay Park

This is a nonmotorized water-access park, 

which includes 39 acres of wetlands, pocket 

estuary, mudflats, lagoon, salt marshes, small
