Our Learning Commons is housed in the revitalised
one-room schoolhouse. Huge windows
allow for hours of natural daylight, a must for
learning and happy students.
Primary students work closely with their teacher.
Formative assessment encourages student reflection,
builds confidence and fosters risk-taking, key attributes
in the IB Learner Profile.
Dedicated time for quiet reading and mindfulness
— a tenet of wellness — gives students the
opportunity to slow down, become attuned to
their thoughts and senses, and learn to be
present in the moment.
They say that if you build it they will come.
Seems cliché, yet it is an honest expression
of hope and promise fueled by unbridled
determination.
Since Walden’s inception, our mission to create
a place where students can be students and teachers
can be teachers has been unfolding. Seeing the curiosity
and spark in our founding cohort of students
reaffirms why we do what we do.
The opening of this school has been a journey, to
say the least. While there were and continue to
be challenges, all great things have to start somewhere.
More than making a difference, it’s about
making things better. And, most important, it’s
about being bold in our approach to do what we
know is right. So, after reading our story, will you
want to join our growing school? We sure hope so.
As you walk through our halls, you will feel the
energy of the renewed life of the one-room schoolhouse
and gain a deep respect for the history within
our walls. Welcome to Walden. We’ve been waiting
for you.

from the Head
of School
Welcome to Walden. It is truly incredible
to be able to work and learn in a
school built almost a century and a
half ago. We’ve lovingly restored the interior to
reflect its origins and have created new learning
spaces that encourage discovery and collaboration.
But beyond the aesthetics, we have built a
school for families that value excellent teaching
and learning, where curiosity, creativity, and
confidence are fostered, and where academic
rigour is celebrated.
Our motto, Imagine Explore Achieve, speaks to
the potential that we seek in our students. We
inspire even the youngest girls and boys in our
Early Years classroom to reach beyond what they
know through inquiry and reflection. And, by
embracing daily challenges they learn resilience
and gain confidence, both hallmarks of success.
Daphne Perugini was a teacher
and Vice-Principal with the Peel
District School Board for nearly two
decades. She has had experience
leading a comprehensive network
of educators in Gifted Learning,
Alternative Education, and the
International Baccalaureate. Like
many in the field who have inspired
her, Ms. Perugini believes that education
needs to be transformed.
But what ultimately sets our standards at Walden
is our team of dedicated faculty and staff who
never cease to amaze me with their innovation,
patience, and professionalism. They are educators
who feel that every child is deserving of
the very best, who are committed to delivering
the very best, and who are not apologetic for
demanding the very best.
We look forward to your visit to Walden. We
are eager to share with you our promise of a
quality education.
Memories of S. S. #5 Chinguacousy come to
me in snippets. Walking to and from school,
which was less than a mile but seemed like a
long way. The day that eleven of us played hookey during
a spring-fever afternoon. Playing baseball after school
with the boys… they’d let me pitch. My favourite schoolteacher,
Mr. Murray Spence, would make us cream soup
or cocoa and how the burned smell filled the room when
it was left on the hotplate too long. My favourite subjects
were spelling, math, science, religion but social studies
left me cold… I wish I could say that the love of learning
is what made school enjoyable for me but to be honest it
was the social aspect.
Because of our reunions over the past fifteen years or
so I think that I’ve come to love even more the seven
years that I spent at S. S. #5. The friendships that were
formed when we first met in grade one still exist today…
68 years later. That is what is amazing to me! The enjoyment
of our times spent together is fantastic and I know
as we’ve grown older that it’s so much more appreciated.
I’m grateful to have had the experience of the one-room
school in spite of the teachers that never smiled… if
they were happy at their jobs we students never knew
it… except for Mr. Spence. Good times, good friends, and
wonderful memories.
We are prominently located on the
northwest corner of Queen Street
West and Chinguacousy Road in the
bustling and growing community
of Credit Valley in West Brampton.
Surrounded by all the conveniences
of city living, our historic property
is also flanked by acres of municipal
park that includes an active cricket
pitch and baseball diamond, as well
as a grand gazebo where locals frequently
meet for
social gatherings
or simply for a
rest after an early
evening stroll.
Brampton’s Bus
Rapid Transit,
our school an accessible destination
for students locally and from afar.
We’ve gone to great lengths to
revive the late-nineteenth century
schoolhouse. Both the interior and
exterior have been respectfully
restored with the comforts of contemporary
life purposefully integrated
to ensure
that the fundamental
needs of
our students and
staff are met.
As we continue to
grow as a school,
we look forward
to further improvements
to the
property and, more importantly,
becoming a local landmark again.

what is the PYP?
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum
framework for young learners aged 3–12 designed
by the International Baccalaureate (IB). Founded
on a philosophy that recognizes a child’s natural
curiosity, creativity and ability to reflect, the PYP
generates a stimulating, challenging learning
environment to nurture those assets and foster a
lifelong love of learning in every child. The PYP,
like all IB programmes, is transdisciplinary,
meaning students learn across subject areas while
investigating big ideas.
Units of inquiry interweave subject areas such as mathematics, language arts,
science and social studies. This approach encourages students to make their
own connections between what they learn in core subject areas and how it
relates to the world around them.
what are the advantages of an IB education?
• IB World Schools are subject to a strict accreditation process monitored by
the IB, ensuring that schools provide a high-quality education.
• IB teaching methods and curriculums are research-based and draw from
the best educational practices from systems around the world.
• IB students develop a sense of the world around them and their responsibility
to it.
• IB programmes are recognized internationally and ease the educational
transitions of mobile students so that their education is not adversely affected
if their families relocate.
what is the
Baccalaureate
Foundations
Programme?
The Baccalaureate Foundations: Advanced Diploma Preparation programme
was developed for Upper Year students intending to pursue the IB
Diploma Programme. It is designed to support the comprehensive scope of a
liberal arts curriculum and the rigours of international education by bridging
prior learning with a unique interdisciplinary pedagogy.
The trilateral model of Baccalaureate Foundations is delivered over two years
and features studies in Commerce, Humanities, and Natural & Quantitative
Sciences. Blended-learning is introduced in the Grade 10 year as preliminary
study for the academic challenges of IB Diploma Programme courses and for
promoting fluency in this emerging learning and working environment.
Developed almost fifty years ago by a group of international educators in
Switzerland, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
(IBDP) is offered over two years to students aged 16 –19 and who are looking
to be effectively prepared for studies in university. The acceptance of the
IBDP worldwide can be attributed to its introduction of interdisciplinary
thinking to students, liberal arts focus, and for its academic rigour.
feeding young minds
Proactive in fostering student
achievement, we recognise wellness
as an essential pillar of education.
Students participate daily in mindfulness
activities, which is a mandate
of our program. Evidence suggests
that introducing mindful meditation
into the classroom is an effective
means of improving kids’ attention
and emotional regulation.We recognize
the importance of encouraging
and modeling a healthy lifestyle that
includes mindfulness, which will
prepare students for success.
Another vital aspect of following a
healthy lifestyle is the promotion of
healthy eating. Kids who eat healthy
are more likely to participate.
Without proper nutrition and adequate
calories, students often don’t
have enough energy to power the
brain, resulting in fatigue and learning
problems. Our school lunch program
is spearheaded by The Lunch Lady,
who works with suppliers, Regional
Boards of Health, parents and kids and
now the federally funded Nourishing
School Communities initiative to
design menus, such as their Smarter
Meals Menu, that will appeal to children
and provide a great afternoon
of learning at school. Their menu
provides a variety of nutritious items
to choose from enabling children
to enjoy their lunch while parents
can have a break from making them.
The Lunch Lady feeds kids’ tummies
service learning with
Project Jenga
Service, when it is really boiled
down, is about helping others.
Learning, when it is really
boiled down, is about helping yourself.
When we learn in order to serve,
we can help the people around us
achieve their best.
This is exactly the vision at Walden
International School. They strive to
instill Service Learning as a value of
personal growth and development —
helping to build the foundation and
framework for a life of learning and
serving.
I have been privileged to see what
serving others can do on a global
scale. When I was just twelve years
old, I was exposed to extreme adversity
in rural Kenya — noticing that
young people my own age, who I
had just met, did not have the same
chance to go to school that I did. This
is where my learning happened.
My service took place when I arrived
home, fueled and ready to make a
change. I founded Project Jenga with
the intention of solving this problem
so that my global peers could
have the same opportunities that I
did. Now, five years later, a secondary
school in Kenya is opening and
students will enter high school for
the very first time.
Walden is helping students learn
about real issues at home and abroad,
so that one day when those students
see an injustice in the world — big or
small — they can act on it, and help to
serve those in need.
In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education
is the most powerful weapon
which you can use to change the
world.” This is true for two reasons.
1) Education provides us with the
academic skillset to see the challenges
in our world, and 2) it shows us how
to act on those same challenges. This
is what you can expect at Walden.
