PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION<br />

A few changes have been made for this new edition. Some details have<br />

been updated, and seven new <strong>hut</strong>s <strong>in</strong>cluded (four <strong>in</strong> Italy, three <strong>in</strong><br />

Austria), as a consequence of which seven Swiss <strong>hut</strong>s described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

first edition have been deleted <strong>in</strong> order to keep <strong>the</strong> number to <strong>100</strong>. That<br />

is not to suggest that those no longer <strong>in</strong>cluded were lack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest –<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> <strong>hut</strong>s or <strong>the</strong>ir routes of approach – but were sacrificed to give a<br />

slightly better balance to <strong>the</strong> book. I am encouraged by <strong>the</strong> comments of<br />

readers of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>100</strong> Hut Walks guide, many of whom shared <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

experiences <strong>in</strong> correspondence and made suggestions for o<strong>the</strong>r routes,<br />

and grateful to guardians and members of various Alp<strong>in</strong>e Clubs for<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>hut</strong>s ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed. Thanks too, to Russell Palmer at<br />

Switzerland Tourism for generous assistance dur<strong>in</strong>g research, to all at<br />

Cicerone Press for <strong>the</strong>ir cont<strong>in</strong>ued support and encouragement and, as<br />

ever, to my wife who makes it all worthwhile.<br />
