DEAR READERS…. 

I cannot deny it, I felt a sense of loss and 

sadness following the closing ceremony 

of the Olympic Games. I thought they 

were fantastic, so much success across so 

many disciplines, who would ever think 

GB could get a gold in Gymnastics… and 

then not just one! 

It just wasn’t our time for the Eventing 

team for one reason or another but 

hopefully they will come back all guns 

blazing in Tokyo. Charlotte du Jardin 

and Valegro were out of this world and will it 

be a “where were you” moment when we talk about Nick Skelton winning gold. 

Just the six in the jump off, he goes clear and then holding our breath as the other 

five completed, we are shouting at the TV, “he’s in bronze medal position, he’s in 

silver medal position…. Its Gold” What a moment! 

So after that and then the girls Hockey on that Friday, I was exhausted! 

The beginning of August (well end of July technically) started with our own 

Equestrian Life Championships. 16 years old now and competitors enjoy them as 

much now as they did the early years. There was then Trailblazers and UK Riders 

and the Side Saddle Nationals that enjoyed record entries. Glorious weather 

helped make the Championships go with a flow. 

Lastly, we report from Frickley BE and the u18 Championships. A fantastic result 

for the Midlands Team – of which our cover star, Oliver Jackson was one – Sam 

York gives us the full low down!

PC Simon Hodkinson and PC Jonny Mann with police dog Dexter 

and CFHS Members at Annual Camp at Brougham. 

Cumberland Farmers’ Hunt 

South Branch of The Pony Club 

The Cumberland Farmers’ Hunt South Branch of the Pony Club 

(CFHS) held its 4 day Annual Camp at Brougham Hall Farm by 

kind permission or Mr C Helme and Mrs S Harden. 52 Members 

aged between 5 and 19, took part and were instructed by qualified 

British Horse Society Instructors in lessons on Dressage, Show 

Jumping, Cross Country, Handy Hunter and Games. 

One afternoon was spent doing team competitions. The Members 

where split into teams of 4 to take part in the Sarah Pearson 

Memorial Competition; Show jumping, Handy Hunter and Games. 

The winning team was Maisie Miller who Show Jumped, Jess 

Chapman who did Games, Hollie Brockbank who Show Jumped and 

Jamie Moulton who did the Handy Hunter. Also on that afternoon 

the children took part in lots of dismounted games in 6 teams; the 

fun involved relays, piggy-backs, sack races and lots of water! 

As part of The Pony Club, Members take Achievement Badges on 

different subjects relating to horses and the countryside. On the 

second day of camp PC Simon Hodkinson and PC Jonny Mann 

visited with three working police dogs, Merlin, Bow and Dexter. 

They showed the Members how police dogs work, how they find 

items and how they stop people. This was all part of the “Working 

Dogs Achievement Badge”. CFHS Members also passed the Mini 

Road Rider, Points of the Horse, Feeding Your Pony, Poisonous 

Plants and Grooming Achievement Badges.

Burghley here we come! 

After the excitement, or is it 

disappointment, of the UK 

eventing team’s performance 

at the Rio Olympics the thrills 

and spills of the Land Rover 

Burghley horse trials are just 

around the corner. 

With advance ticket sales up 

on last year, five Olympic riders 

entered, a revamped cross 

country course and lots of our 

local riders taking part, many 

for the first time, the omens 

are good for a vintage event. 

At the recent press day held 

in August, Leicestershire 

based competitors Simon 

Grieve and Sarah Cohen were 

in attendance detailing their 

plans. Both of these riders are 

old hands at Burghley and 

were full of excitement. Sarah 

is to ride Treason, a horse she 

has ridden and trained since a 

youngster, but is now the one 

any only horse she rides. She 

said: “My preparation has been 

going well as we were placed 

fifth at the recent CIC 3* 

class at the Festival of British 

Eventing at Gatcombe. This 

will be his second attempt at 

Burghley as we finished 19th 

in 2013.” 

With two horses entered, 

Simon Grieve was equally 

enthusiastic. With both his 

rides, nine year old Drumbilla 

Metro and 12 year-old 

Traveller Royale, making their 

debut appearance at Burghley 

he said: “I’ll just be pleased 

to complete and should I 

manage a top 20 placing I’d 

be delighted.” Unfortunately 

this is not to be. A matter of 

days later Simon suffered a 

horrendous rotational fall at 

Hartbury International riding 

another of his horses and 

dislocated his shoulder. So 

ended Simon’s dreams for this 

year. 

All those who have been to 

this event before know there 

is much more to it than just 

the eventing competition, 

as also held is the final of 

the Burghley Young Event 

Horse competition. A new 

development this year is to be 

a ridden assessment. The last 

10 horses in each class are to 

be ridden and assessed by no 

less than Ian Stark. As event 

director, Liz Inman, said: “Ian 

has volunteered this year. 

Whether he will be quite so 

keen next year, we will wait 

and see!” 

The event runs within 

Burghley Park at Stamford, 

Lincs between 1-4 September.

John Mason Reflects on his 60 

Years in Veterinary Practice 

Local Equine Vet, John Mason 

has racked up an astounding 

60 years in Veterinary 

Practice this year. John is 

a well-known and popular 

horse vet, based at Scarsdale 

Vets, where he still sees a 

number of cases and is on 

the Joint Measuring 

Board (JMB) for 

the Derbyshire 

& Nottingham 

region. Here 

he reflects on 

how he got 

into veterinary 

medicine and 

how times have 

changed during his 

career. 

Many vets know as children 

that they want to go into 

veterinary practice, and John 

is no exception to this! As an 

11 year old lad, whilst playing 

out in the snow with friends 

and his dog, he noticed 

his dog was lame. After 

examining his paws, noticed 

ice in between the pads. He 

picked out the ice and thawed 

his feet before venturing out 

into the snowy fields. His dog 

was happily bounding around 

again in the snow. John says, 

“I realised that day that I had 

done a good thing, so decided 

that I wanted to become a 

vet.” 

He continued, “I was called 

up for national service in my 

youth, and applied to join the 

Veterinary Corps. I was due 

to join the Royal Veterinary 

College (RVC) after National 

Service had ended. I had to do 

10 weeks of Infantry training 

first, then the Unit Selection 

Board decided that, with my 

High School Certificates, 

and background in military 

cadets, I was suitable Officer 

material. No matter how 

much they tried to ‘sell’ the 

idea of being an Officer to me, 

I was determined to join the 

Veterinary Corps!” 

It was during National Service 

that John learnt to ride horses 

and began his interest in the 

care and health of horses. 

After Vet School, John found 

his first job as a vet by 

accident! “My family were 

farmers, and one day my 

Father found one of his cattle 

had been struck by lightning. 

In order to move the body, he 

needed a vet to blood test for 

disease. A vet was called out 

and my Father spoke about 

me to the vet (KS Cochran) 

who had also been RVC 

trained. He offered me 

his first job!” John 

added. 

“Over the past 

60 years not a 

great amount 

has changed. 

There are far 

more female 

vets now. At 

University, there 

were just 3 women in 

my year of 75 students and 

that was a high proportion 

compared to some of the Vet 

Schools.” 

“Equine medicine in 

particular has become less 

dangerous. The choice of 

sedation has improved 

drastically. Now there are a 

number of options, whereas 

when I first started out, you 

gave a horse a mask full 

of chloroform and waited 

until the horse fell over!! 

There were also the very 

obvious risks of being the vet 

administering the mask of 

chloroform – many became 

dizzy themselves!” 

“One thing that has not 

changed over the years is the 

value of a ‘thank you’. The 

consistently great thing about 

being a vet is the ability to 

treat animals and hearing a

John’s advice to anybody 

wishing to enter into equine 

medicine is that you need 

a good basic knowledge of 

horses, be used to handling 

horses, in particular being a 

rider is a great benefit. You 

also need an affinity with 

horses. There have been many 

times when a general vet 

has dealt with a particularly 

awkward horse, but the horse 

has calmed down once a 

‘horsey’ vet has arrived.

thrilling finale in The TopSpec Challenge for The Corinthian 

Cup, a National Restricted Novice Championship at The 

Festival of British Eventing, presented by the British 

Equestrian Trade Association (BETA). 

Thirteenth after dressage, a rare clear in the influential show 

jumping phase elevated the pair to joint first going into the 

cross country, and when their nearest rivals – dressage leaders 

Rebecca Woolley and Zeno Das Gluck – failed to complete 

Captain Mark Phillips’s track, Andrea’s penalty-free round 

ensured she took the mantle. 

“We took an absolute flyer over the wall at fence five and my 

hat fell down over my eyes, so the next few jumps were a bit of 

a blur,” admitted the 44-year-old from Doncaster, who works 

full time as a manager for a mobile crane operator. “I had 

hoped for a double clear, so to win is incredible.” 

Andrea was particularly pleased with her clear round in the 

show jumping. 

“The Course Designer, Di Boddy, is local to me so I have 

jumped quite a few of her courses. I knew to expect a twisty, 

up-to-height track, so I was prepared for that.” 

Only two penalties separated the top seven going into the 

final phase, so a fast clear was essential to feature in the final 

reckoning. 

“To be honest, I was expecting my younger horse [Edmonton 

ELS] to go the better of the two as this one’s quite cheeky, 

but he stepped up to the plate,” said Emma, who works as 

a secretary for an equine veterinary surgery in Yorkshire. 

“Competing here has been the most amazing experience. As 

I rode into the show jumping arena I cantered down the long 

side and took in the atmosphere – then I took a deep breath 

and tried to concentrate on my round.”

Masterclass Series on 8 July at 

Parklands Equestrian Centre, 

Sheffield. Eleanor Stevenson 

is SCT’s ‘Apprentice of the Year 

2016’, while Emily Ward wins 

the ‘Advanced Apprentice of the 

Year’ title. 

Eleanor is doing her Level 2 

Apprenticeship at her family’s 

Sykehouse Arena competition 

centre near Doncaster, South 

Yorkshire. Sykehouse Arena 

holds competitions and offers 

clients the opportunity to train 

with top coaches, Eleanor said: 

“Not only am I developing 

my equestrian skills through 

my Apprenticeship, I am also 

learning different coaching 

techniques from other trainers 

and the principles of show 

centre management, both from 

a financial and operational 

perspective.” 

Eleanor is a successful show 

jumper – as is Advanced 

Apprentice of the Year Emily 

Ward, who is Britain’s number 

one under-18 rider. 

She was part of the winning 

Junior Nations Cup team in 

Belgium in June, and is hoping 

for selection for the Junior 

European Championships at 

Millstreet in Ireland in August. 

Emily is employed by show 

jumper Michael Whitaker, 

who has long been a 

staunch supporter of SCT’s 

Apprenticeship scheme and 

who is heading for his sixth 

Olympic appearance for Great 

Britain in Rio this summer. 

Eleanor and Emily were 

awarded their prizes by show 

jumper Matthew Sampson, 

who gave the third of SCT’s 

2016 Masterclass series. The 

Masterclasses are exclusive 

to SCT’s Apprentices and 

employers, and offer them 

chances to train with the very 

best international riders and 

coaches. One attendee said: 

“It was so well-organised and 

Matthew is a great trainer – 

what an opportunity!”

Endurance GB Team announced 

The Endurance GB International 

Committee is delighted to announce the 

athletes and horses chosen to represent 

Team GB in the upcoming Senior and 

Young Rider Championships. 

The Senior Team will compete in the 

160km, FEI Longines World Endurance 

Championships to be held in Samorin, 

Slovakia from the 15-18th September.

‘Premiere’ Position 

The 16th Bloomfields Equestrian Life Summer Showing and Working 

Hunter Championships saw a great turnout at Oakridge Arena. 

Lots of new faces as well as the 

regulars came forward for two days 

of showing. The riders and horses 

alike benefited from the spectacular 

indoor arena and a variety of grass 

rings, with classes starting at 8am it 

was all go. Sunday is Championship 

Day and those pulled 1st or 2nd in their 

respective classes go forward for prejudging 

and then forward to the Evening 

Performance. Even for those who did 

not make it through, everyone deserves 

their merits for a job very well done. 

At 5pm the evening performance 

began starting with the Little Peoples 

Class. A strong number of ponies and 

their young riders took part. The 

Championship was awarded to three 

year old Rose Porter who stole 1st place 

with her pony Eastways After Hours 

followed by 6 year old Clea Sidaway on 

Cosford Charming in Reserve. Rose had 

taken Reserve in the Lead Rein M&M 

and Veteran Ridden earlier in the day. 

Clea also took 1st in Lead Rein Show 

Hunter Pony/show Pony. 

The Equitation Final, which replaces the 

Best Rider Final, saw Emma Teagle take 

first place on Castleside Fionn and Lexi 

Truman took reserve on Kingshaugh 

Eclipse. 

In the Ridden Pony Classes, the 

championship took combinations from 

Style and Appearance, Open Ridden 

Show Pony, Ridden Part Bred Pony, 

Ridden Coloured Pony and Veteran 

Ridden. Lauren Roberts was awarded 

first place on her beautiful Pharoahs 

Prince. Jade Plummer took her first

with confidence and a beautifully ridden 

pony, anything is possible. Ruby Rogers 

stepped forward to claim the Reserve 

place with Cosford Tears of Joy. 

The team that ran the Working Hunter 

had a busy day. Over nine classes 

produced some lovely rounds and a 

few unintentional dismounts but the 

course rode very well. In the evening 

performance, the Championship went to 

Caroline Heard and Beechmount Frankel. 

These two are really starting to find their 

form and enjoying a great season. Rachael 

Stoke took reserve position with Quartz 

Diamond Boy. 

Next it was the turn of the In hand 

Championships and the horses and 

ponies came in led by their handlers. 

Nicola Smith claimed a well-deserved 

Emma Teagle and Castleside Fionn 

Equitation Champion and Supreme Ridden 

Champion 

Championship with Hazard Away followed 

by Vicki Lee Goldstone Mr Fantastic in 

reserve. Nicola came first in the In Hand 

Hacks/Riding Horses and Ex Racehorse in 

Hand. 

The Veteran Championship is the only 

non pre-judged Championship of the 

show. All 1st and 2nd placed competitors 

are eligible to come forward for the 

Evening Championships. The Veteran 

Horse Society made it even more special 

by awarding a ‘Golden Ticket’ to the 

winner this year, taking them straight 

through to the Veteran Championships in 

September. 

It didn’t take long to see Jade Plummer 

and her pony Ludworth Viking returning 

for their second reserve sash in the 

Supreme Veteran coming second to 

Amy Gerraghty with Inglegarth Premier. 

Despite being ill since last November, 15 

year old, Inglegarth has come back into 

showing at the beginning of the year 

where he has competed in a number of 

local shows and has always been placed, 

his last show before the Championships 

was Ecclesfield where he won Supreme 

Veteran and Supreme of Show. He has just 

started to be ridden and Amy hopes to 

show him under saddle next year.

The M&M In hand brought a wide variety 

of Native breeds to the ring where Amy 

Gerraghty returned with Inglegarth

is time to award our Supremes, Supreme 

In Hand, Ridden and Supreme of Show. 

Amy Gerraghty and Inglegarth Premier 

were named Supreme In Hand Champion 

after much deliberation of all the superb 

competitors. Vicky Lee Goldston and 

Goldston Mr Fantastic were chosen for 

Supreme Reserve. 

Next, the Champions and Reserves of 

the Ridden Classes returned. The Judges 

called Emma Teagle riding Castleside 

Fionn as the Supreme Ridden Champion 

with Lauren Roberts on Pharoahs Prince 

as reserve. 

Amy Gerraghty and Inglegarth Premier 

took Supreme of Show. Amy commented 

on the event and said “We thought it was 

great, it’s the first time we’ve been, we’ve 

been intending to compete here for the 

last couple of years but there’s always 

been something that got in the way and 

we really enjoyed it.”

Training Tips 

from Robert Walker 

Cheshire-based Robert Walker, is well known as a leading show rider and producer 

of many top show horses consistently winning major titles at Royal International 

Horse Show and Horse of the Year Show. Here Robert, sponsored by Black Country 

Saddles provides some training advice to stand out in the showing ring. 

When exercising or schooling, 

Robert likes to ask his horses 

to ‘move their hocks’, which 

basically means getting them moving 

from behind. 

Explains Robert: “The horse should be 

off the riders’ leg into a soft hand which 

will create lift and carriage in front. This 

will generate more movement rather than 

pushing them out of their rhythm and 

just increasing the speed. A good way to 

improve this is by practising serpentines 

and leg-yielding.” 

Some show riders tighten the curb chain 

to improve the horses outline, but Robert 

believes this can create a jerky effect from 

the horses’ mouth to the tail. This will 

cause problems in wanting to achieve a 

soft seat, whereas the seat would develop 

better if the horse learnt to be soft and 

supple. 

Being out and about is important to 

broaden the horses’ horizons. Robert likes 

to have his horses out hacking to keep 

them sweet and educating them from 

these new experiences. 

As well as hacking Robert believes 

working outside in open spaces rather 

than continuously working in an arena 

is best as this can take away the horses 

personality. 

He also feels hacking out brings the horses 

on much more due to them working on 

different grounds and there is no barrier 

or fence where the horse can cling to. 

In the showing world ringcraft is very 

important but the horse will not show 

off their full potential if the rider has 

to spend most of their time keeping 

the horse under control. It is key to get 

them settled by allowing plenty of time 

to warm up and get them used to their 

surroundings, minimising the risk of them 

spooking in the main arena. 

Adds Robert: “I would always recommend 

going and looking at the ring before your 

show to assess any potential spooky 

hazards so you can work at it in the warm 

up and be best prepared. 

“When you are in the ring keep a nice 

even rhythm, and don’t over take past the 

judge, this will not do you any favours. It 

is best to do some circles so you can move 

to an area where there is more space.” 

Robert’s favourite piece of equipment is 

the Black Country Classic Show Saddle 

which is made from vintage leather and is 

comfortable from day one.

The 2016 Futurity 

Kicks Off At Vale View 

One elite premium was awarded at 

The Baileys Horse Feeds/ British 

Breeding/British Equestrian 

Federation (BEF) Futurity at Vale View 

Equestrian Centre, Leicestershire. 

The elite of the day went to dressage filly 

foal, Daylight’s Dream GF (Dimaggio x De 

Niro) with a score of 9.05 for Sandy Senior 

of the Glossoms Farm Stud in Melton. 

Sandy said: “Daylight’s Dream is the first 

elite foal we have bred from my mare, 

Daylight. She has bred several others that 

have received higher firsts. Daylight’s 

Dream’s elite has provided us with a real 

boost as we sadly lost the two other foals 

we bred this year.” 

Sandy is planning to have Daylight’s 

Dream performance tested and then will 

breed from her. She added: “Daylight is 16 

now and hopefully this filly will go on to 

be her replacement as a broodmare.” 

A yearling took the second highest score 

of the day. Emma Jablonski’s, Knight 

Vision (Governor x Negro) scored a higher 

first premium of 8.85 in the dressage 

section. This yearling gelding was bred 

by Laurie Ibbotson and also scored the 

same mark of 8.85 at the Futurity last 

year. Emma, from Selston said: “I was 

hoping Knight Vision would do well at 

the Futurity. I bought her when she had 

just been weaned. I plan to produce her 

myself.” Emma is currently competing at 

PSG and Inter 1 level with Cor IV Z. 

Two-year-old dressage colt, Sällan (Sir 

Donnerhall x Lauries Crusador) scored 

8.80 for Fiona Casswell from North 

Ormsby. 

Best of the eventers was Bourne resident, 

Sally Lister’s un-named filly foal (Samaii 

x Indorado), she scored a higher first 

premium of 8.82. Sally said: “I am pleased 

with her mark, I found the evaluator 

comments at the Futurity very helpful. 

The Futurity vet, Jane Nixon was positive 

and fair with her comments too.” 

Peta Pegley of Kudahs Sport Horses near 

Sleaford owns and bred the joint highest 

scoring jumper. Filly foal, Kudahs Mayfly 

(Sir Shutterfly x Puissance) took home a 

higher first premium of 8.80. Peta bought 

her dam, Able Coin from Harthill. She 

said: “I bought the mare as I liked her 

bloodlines and they will fit in well with my 

breeding programme. Kudahs Mayfly is 

for sale, she is bred to jump and is a very 

brave and friendly foal.” 

Kathleen Walsh’s filly foal, Diarista 

(Diarado x Contendro 1) also took 

home a higher first premium of 8.80 

in the jumping section. Kathleen bred 

Diarista’s dam, Calista, who gained an 

elite Futurity premium as a youngster. 

Kathleen, from Leicester said: “Calista 

has been competing at advanced and 2* 

level eventing with Ros Canter. She then 

injured herself last year and so we decided 

to put her in foal. We had Calista’s mother 

too, she was a grade B show-jumper and 

evented.” 

Also attaining a higher first premium 

in the jumping section was Mandi 

Meer’s colt foal, Arrathornes Alderaan 

(Ballinmore Irish Rebel x Armstrong) 

with a score of 8.75. Mandi from South 

Normanton was thrilled with the result, 

she said: “We knew the foal was good, 

and we are so excited with this result. 

Evaluator, Chris Hunnable said that 

Alderaan has a ‘huge future’”. Mandi 

owns Alderaan’s class 1 Irish Draught 

registered sire Ballinmore Irish Rebel 

who is also the only Irish Draught stallion 

registered with Breeders Elite in the UK. 

Whixall resident, Eva-Maria Broomer’s 

colt foal, Freudentanz (Fransje x Distelzar) 

scored 8.75 in the dressage section. 

Freudentanz’s dam, Distelprix has been 

a prolific mare for Eva-Maria. She bred 

Wunderkind (Woodlander Wild Child x 

Distelzar) who scored an elite premium 

of 9.40 as a foal in the 2015 Futurity and 

Silver Lining ZB who is licensed with 

the British Warmblood Society and the 

Oldenburgs. 

Top of the sports ponies was Victoria 

Legget’s eventing pony, the yearling, 

Tamasha Golden Ghost (Bathleyhills 

Monet x Langwedh Sunny Jim) with a 

higher first premium of 8.71. 

Victoria from Walgrave said: “We brought 

Diarista 

Daylight’s Dream 

Golden Ghost to the Futurity last year 

when he was just 5 weeks old. He has 

grown up a lot in the past year and we 

are very pleased with his score.” Victoria 

bred Golden Ghost from her pony mare, 

Strictly Dun Dancing who attained an elite 

Futurity premium and went on to take 

3rd place in the Futurity eventing final at 

Osberton. 

Heading the endurance entries was Davina 

Godwin’s three-year-old colt, Red House 

Valentine (Al Hudaydah x Ali Khaziel) 

with a higher first premium of 8.63 in the 

endurance section. Red House Valentine 

was bred by Dr G von Tevenar. 

Davina from Doddington said, “We are 

really pleased with the mark awarded to 

Red House Valentine. Futurity evaluator, 

Jo Claridge said she will be ‘looking 

forward to his future career.’” Davina 

is planning for Red House Valentine to 

stand as a stallion at stud. She added: 

“I would like him to compete in all the 

ridden disciplines – not just endurance. 

His half-sister, Azalea is a very successful 

show horse.” 

The Futurity is a continually evolving 

process, 2013 saw the introduction of 

the Futurity equine bridge which is now 

being run as an extension of the Futurity 

evaluations. The Futurity equine bridge 

provides top Futurity graduates with 

the direction and support they will need 

as 4 year olds so that they begin their 

early years under saddle in a way that 

allows for sustained physical and mental 

development. In order to be eligible for 

the Futurity Equine Bridge all horses must 

obtain a Futurity score of 8.5 or above and 

a high enough vet score in the in their 

three-year-old year. 

The BEF’s Head of Equine Development 

Jan Rogers said, “We are increasingly 

noticing that breeders, buyers and riders 

of British bred horses are finding that a 

Futurity premium is a very useful aid in 

helping assess these horses. We are also 

seeing a marked improvement in the 

standard of youngsters entered in the 

futurity, which is very good news for the 

future of British breeding”.

for the team to have hands on training. To finish the session, a few members from the 

practice drove through the water splash at the Bennington Carriage Driving Academy.

Winter Paddock Care 

With Autumn & Winter months 

around the corner, now is your 

last opportunity to prepare your 

paddocks and pasture. The dark nights, 

hours of driving rain, snow and frosts do 

not do grass a lot of good, so it is vital 

your fields are in top shape. With careful 

planning and management now, there is 

no need to keep your horse or pony in a 

stable for hours and days on end. 

By planning the maintenance of your 

paddocks in March and then again in 

September you can help provide the best 

use of the grazing land you have. This will 

not only ensure the health and wellbeing 

of your horse, but will also be more 

aesthetically pleasing when compared 

to the usual churned up mud pits seen 

throughout the winter. 

WEED CONTROL 

Through the spring, we have been 

advising you on ways to reduce any weed 

populations you may have. While it is 

more beneficial to control weeds during 

the spring months, it is also possible 

to control them as we get to the end 

of the summer. This can produce a few 

difficulties as by this time, most weeds 

are very large & the leaves are incredibly 

waxy making chemical uptake slow. 

If you still have weeds to control we would 

advise waiting for the autumn flush which 

is when new weeds start to germinate 

due to the increased soil moisture. We 

advise doing this so you get the most 

reward for your investment. If you have 

large established weeds such as docks, 

nettles, bramble or ragwort then we would 

recommend these are mowed or topped 

around 3 weeks before spraying. Where 

possible we would advise you consider 

cultural or mechanical methods of 

controlling weeds. Mowing & harrowing 

can help reduce weed populations 

although this can often be labour 

intensive & slow. Avoid pulling deep 

rooted weeds such as docks or ragwort as 

this often snaps the root & can make the 

problem spread quicker. 

The next thing to ascertain is which 

weed killer you need to use. There are 

many types available & the most suitable 

product will often be tailored to your 

needs. Questions you may be asked by one 

of our paddock advisors are: 

• How big is the area you have to spray? 

• Are you using a backpack sprayer or 

tractor mounted/ATV sprayer? 

• What weeds are present? 

• How large are the weeds? 

• Are there any environmental factors 

such as water courses or wanted flora? 

• Has the field been over-seeded or reseeded 

within the last 3-6 months? 

All of the above are important factors 

when choosing the correct weed killer. 

Other things to consider when spraying 

weeds are spray enhancers such as dyemarkers 

& adjuvant oils. 

Blue dye marker can be mixed with the 

weed killer to temporarily stain the 

sprayed area blue. This will help you 

avoid over-spraying the same area 

twice, or missing patches. An adjuvant 

oil can be mixed with the weed killer & 

can help penetrate waxy or hairy leaves, 

enhancing its affect by up to 30%. 

FERTILISING 

Like any plan, grass requires nutrients 

to grow. Autumn is often seen as a time 

where you will again be applying fertiliser 

to your fields. Exactly which type & how 

much will depend on what is available in 

your soil & what you plan on doing with 

your fields.

susceptible to poaching; and 

poached fields can encourage

field has poor drainage & 

you are unable to do any 

permanent fixes, a temporary 

measure could be to mole 

plough or deep tine aerate.

they explain why good hygiene is so 

important. 

Mycotoxins are produced by some types 

of mould growth under certain conditions 

and can occur in growing, harvested or 

stored cereal and forage crops. One of 

the key difficulties in identifying risk is 

that mycotoxins can be present without 

the presence of mould. Equally, not all 

mould growth indicates the presence of 

mycotoxins. 

Feed mills and producers have a 

responsibility to ensure the feed you 

buy is free from contamination and fit 

for consumption by the animal. Cereals 

commonly used in feed manufacture are 

routinely tested for certain mycotoxins 

and, if levels are sufficient, the sample or 

batch is rejected. 

However, horse owners can also 

help in the fight against mycotoxin 

contamination by controlling the storage 

and feeding of forage, cereals and 

bedding. By following some simple steps 

horse owners can develop their own ‘risk 

assessment’. Key areas to think about 

when trying to reduce contamination are: 

Feed: 

• Check hay and haylage, as well as 

bedding material for moulds and 

mycotoxins – this can be a visual check 

and/or laboratory test. 

• Offer only fresh feed. 

• Store feed and forage in dry, cool 

conditions. 

• Use haylage within 2-3 days of opening. 

• Check temperature of haylage – hot 

haylage indicates the presence of yeasts 

and moulds. You can do this with either 

a temperature probe or by sticking your 

hand into the bale, it should feel cool. 

• Avoid soaking hay for prolonged 

periods. 

Water: 

• Clean water buckets/troughs/utensils 

regularly. 

• Check for signs of mould etc and 

remove. 

• Check for contamination of other 

contaminants e.g. heavy metals. 

Equipment: 

Wash feed buckets 

regularly to reduce 

the risk of potential 

exposure to mycotoxins. 

• Clean and wash out feed bins between 

batches and feed buckets after each use 

– ensure they are dry before storage and 

their next use. 

• Store feed in a dry, well-ventilated area. 

• Keep all additional feeding equipment, 

such as scoops and mixing spoons clean. 

• Address the risk of rodents/pests 

including birds. 

Environment: 

• Check the ventilation in stables and 

barns – cobwebs are a good indicator that 

there is no air movement in that area. 

• Check moisture levels in feed storage 

areas. 

• Check for the presence of moulds, 

particularly on wooden structures. 

• Disinfect feed rooms regularly. 

• Avoid over-grazing pastures. 

Creating a checklist or flow cart that 

is kept on the yard and that everyone 

understands is an excellent way to help 

reduce the risk of a potential mycotoxin 

problem. Useful tools to have include a 

torch, disposable gloves, disinfectant and 

zip-lock bags for any samples. 

Overall, keeping equipment clean and 

ensuring storage conditions are wellventilated, 

dry and cool will go a long 

way to reducing the exposure of horses to 

mycotoxins.

Preparing Your Horse Nutritionally for Seasonal Change 

As we head towards the winter 

months, this can mean a complete 

change of routine for your horse or 

pony as the days shorten, turnout decreases 

and the inevitable cold weather sets in, so it 

is highly important to nutritionally support 

them through the seasonal changes that 

are bound to occur, as this can be a stressful 

time for our equine partners and could 

affect their health and wellbeing if not 

managed correctly. 

The first major change to our horses’ 

routine is the switch from long periods 

of turnout, where their diet consists 

predominantly of constant, ad-lib forage 

and grasses, to increasing periods of 

stabling, whereby hay or haylage and 

concentrate feeds are utilised as an 

alternative to the reduction in grazing. 

This can impact greatly on your horse as 

you must ensure that they are receiving 

adequate fibre in their diet throughout the 

winter months as they use around 80% of 

their feed energy to keep warm. As fibre is 

the most ‘warming’ dietary component, it is 

important to provide the correct quantity, 

however, it can lack essential vitamins,

Loving Life and 

Back Competing 

Well, having thought that I 

wouldn’t be ready for the 

Regional Championship with 

Annabelle being over-due, I am pleased 

to report that Felix loved being back in 

work. I was feeling far better than I 

thought I would as I had been out of 

the saddle for a few weeks. 

We had our lesson with Rhett at 

the beginning of the month and 

although I had planned for it to 

be just a half hour lesson I felt we 

could have gone on longer and it 

was then that I thought “you know 

what, these regionals are more than 

do-able!” 

So it was all systems go, after test riding 

practise for a week we were all set. 

I would normally have taken Felix to a 

couple of competitions in the run up to 

a championship but I just didn’t have 

the time for this so I knew he would 

maybe be a bit fresh but we were up for a 

challenge! 

My time was 7.58pm and the arena walks 

were early in the morning so I made 

the decision we couldn’t really do those 

either as it would have involved getting 

up too early with Annabelle and being at 

the competition all day. 

So, we set off as a full family my mum, 

dad, Gary and Jess to help with Felix - oh 

and of course Annabelle! Enjoying her

feed her, then I jumped on board. 

Felix felt great although I slightly over 

cooked the warm up given both of our 

lack of fitness, I couldn’t have been more 

pleased with him. He entered the arena 

with his eyes on stalks and piaffing for 

a few strides. The more the test went on 

the more rideable he became and scored 

a very creditable 71.38% putting me in 

fourth place, the only down side was 

the top three qualified for the National 

Championships, so I am really hoping for 

a wild card entry but we will see. 

I am pleased to say I have been back to 

Dixi and her foal.

end of this month and next. It will be 

a busy few months at work for me in 

the run up to our year end at the end of 

October. I am very lucky that Annabelle 

is able to come with me and we can carry 

on almost as normal. 

We have just brought our other foal and 

broodmare home from South Grange 

Stud. It is lovely to finally welcome a colt, 

this is one special boy by Bodyguard and 

my mare, Dixi is by de Niro X Landgraf, 

so hopefully there is an exciting future 

ahead for him. 

As I do have a little bit more family time 

now, Annabelle and I joined my brother 

and his family for a few days holiday at 

Sandilands to watch my talented nieces 

and nephew win both of their respective 

age groups at the tennis tournament and 

catch a few days of sunshine. 

We will be starting our homebred threeyear-olds 

very soon so I look forward to 

reporting on those too.

Climbing the 

LADDER!

We are just about over the half 

way point in the eventing 

season, in fact, doing entries 

recently it seems to be speeding towards 

the end! 

This is usually the point where you have 

to start making some decisions on the 

levels that horses are running at. You 

hopefully started the season with a 

confidence boosting run at a level below 

the end of last season, and have been 

running along consistently improving 

and broadening your horses’ education. 

There comes a point though when it all 

starts to become a bit less challenging, 

and may even start to feel easy! It’s 

at this point that you need to sit and 

re-evaluate your plan. This article will 

hopefully give you a few pointers, and 

also build your confidence to make the 

jump! When starting a horse in its first 

season (may be as a 4 or 5 year old) it is 

all about just getting them to be able to 

do three different things well all on one 

day. It’s being out and about in different 

places with lots of distractions and 

coping with a bit of atmosphere. 

Be sure to practice more technical fences before upgrading 

The horses need to be educated enough 

before they go out that they listen to the 

rider and stay on the aids when they are 

not sure about the question or if they go 

a bit insecure. We often take the young 

horses out on the lorry and just ride 

them round at events if there is enough 

time and space on the lorry. This then 

makes being ridden away from home just 

another day at the office for them. 

First events are usually unaffiliated and 

we just aim to get round all three phases! 

Previously we will have done a few 

outings show jumping, dressage and been 

cross country schooling to at least two 

different courses. If we hit a problem in 

training, they won’t be asked to compete 

until it has been dealt with. Once they 

have done at least one unaffiliated, more 

if it is possible, they will then start out 

BE eventing. 

Most will start at 90, but the odd one may 

go straight out 100. When I first started 

eventing we went straight out at Novice, 

but would have done a lot of unaffiliated 

events prior. Most of our horses do two 

or three 90s - it totally depends on how 

confident they feel. (The 4yr olds only

do 90s as qualifiers and are only allowed 

to do three). They will then move up to 

100 and may stay at this for the rest of 

the season. 100 courses are getting better 

and now ask lots of mini questions so are 

great for education. If a horse suddenly 

meets a novel question that it doesn’t 

understand at Novice dimensions, it 

is more likely to go wrong! If we come 

across a problem, we deal with it in 

training. I would not consider moving 

a horse up a grade, until it was coping 

really well and almost making it feel easy 

at the level that it was at. Some good 5yr 

olds will go novice in their 5th year, but 

only if they feel ready. The 5 year old 

championships show jumping at Novice 

level. As well as doing our eventing 

training, we also go and jump BS. 

It is a really good idea to go and jump 

slightly bigger than you will be eventing 

at. The BS courses tend to be more 

technical with tighter turns and more 

variable distances, so if you master these,

eventing show jumping is easy! It is also 

great to be training and jumping on the 

big arenas with great surfaces that a lot 

of the show centres now have. This just 

saves miles on the horses’ legs. Fitness is 

another consideration before upgrading. 

You will be going faster and for longer so 

make sure that you and your horse are 

well prepared. Also make sure that you 

do your homework on the terrain of the 

courses that you are thinking of entering. 

Gallops 

Are they hilly or twisting, as this takes 

more out of the horse. There are a lot of 

great apps available now that can track 

speed and distance via GPS. I use skitracks 

and it helps track speed. Also start 

to wear your XC stopwatch to make sure 

you are doing enough! 

Making choices about where to go to 

upgrade - ask about as to what courses 

are like. Some are more up to height and 

straightforward, some are more technical. 

Bear in mind that you know your horse 

the best! If you can, have a walk of them 

at the Spring event, but beware as they 

will change the course! We always book a 

‘safety run’ after upgrading, both to build 

confidence, but also if anything goes 

wrong! Some horses can jump amazingly, 

but think a bit too much and need a bit of 

an ego boost after trying really hard. The 

new 105cm classes are a great idea, but 

the first one overcooked the idea, and put 

a lot of horses off, so these classes need 

refining. It will be interesting to watch 

how these develop. 

Finally, remember that you are supposed 

to enjoy your day!! There are plenty of 

horse and rider combinations that stay 

at the level they are at and have a great 

time!

Head over heart 

We heading up to Burgham 

International where we had four 

horses running. We had Matcho 

doing his first 3*, The wedding present 

doing his first 2*, Wally running in the 

2*as he has not run for ages and O.B in the 

BYEH and the KBIS five-year-old class. It 

was quite an emotional weekend. 

The wedding present has come on so 

much recently he went and jumped double 

clear. When this horse first came to me he 

could barely jump and would have three 

showjumps down around a 100, was very 

spooky and had a habit of spinning very 

quickly. So over the finish line of the XC, I 

had a little proud tear and he so wants to 

please and I think he would have jumped 

round the three star. 

Matcho man had one show jump down.... 

From the pictures you may wonder how, 

I think he produces air waves over the 

fences. He was fab across the country. 

More happy tears as I have produced 

him from a five-year-old. We are looking 

forward to taking him to Blenheim to 

do the 8/9 3*. Wally jumped his normal 

double clear after a very excitable 

dressage, some would say he was glad to 

be out but airs above the ground were not 

required movements! 

O.B only came second in the BYEH 

qualifier and jumped double clear in the 

KBIS class to finish in the top ten. She is 

such a dude, calm level headed and loves 

to get on with her job. 

The Monday after we got back Charlotte 

had a tumble off one of the youngsters 

and has broken a bone in her toe, so we 

had to put a hold on competing for a 

couple of weeks. 

We have been out dressaging and all 

horses have been in the top three every

time out so I keep chalking myself to 

do the six test challenge each week. 

Remembering six tests in a day all from 

memory. I just feel you can prepare more 

for the movements when you know where 

you are going. I draw my arena on a piece 

of paper, draw the test to start with and 

then draw just my arena and dictate my 

test to one of my grooms over and over 

again. 

When I wrote my last article I said 

we might have some exciting news.

coaches have made the decision to aim 

wally for Blenheim the week later and not 

Burghley. This was not an easy decision 

hence this article being called head over 

heart, but based on his few runs this 

season, and his rather excitable dressage 

at Burgham, our plan is to go to Blenheim 

with him and get a top 20% place. 

Getting him qualified for Badminton 

alongside Douglas. If all is well, we will 

aim him for Pau in October as there is less 

atmosphere there. He is such a sensitive 

soul and my job is to manage him and 

not just my ambition. Caroline Moore has 

really been helping me with him and we 

have been riding lots of tests. Working 

on straightness, connection down the 

rein and me riding each movement. If 

extended trot is from a marker ride from 

that marker not build up two strides from 

the marker. We call it ride like Micheal 

...yung!! I can but try. 

Talking of Micheal Yung the Olympics 

cross country day was gripping. It was 

a tough course and it took some riding. 

The round that stood out the most in 

my opinion was Chris Burton, he takes 

riding out of a rhythm to an all new 

aspiring level. One to one watch over and 

over again. The GB team were close to 

perfection but it is so easy for everyone to 

judge when we are sat at home. They were 

still some of the best riders in the world 

just having off days. 

The Olympics have been great in the 

evenings, we have been watching the 

hockey, gymnastics and diving, not sports 

I would normally follow but I have really 

enjoyed it. We can all learn something 

from these athletes as they are at the top 

of their game. What grit the hockey team 

showed, never giving up and it payed off. 

We are looking for a new working pupil as 

Callam our summer placement heads back 

to University at the end of September. 

So if anyone is looking we work with 

Stubbing Court where you can work 

towards your NVQs alongside learning 

on the job. A super basis for an aspiring 

competition groom. 

We head to Keysoe, Wellington and 

Blenheim next.

Castle Eventing 

The beautiful Cholmondeley Castle, 

Cheshire. An impressive setting 

that is run by Musketeer Event 

Management, Cholmondeley 

caters for BE100 to intermediate 

competitors. 

Course builder Alec Lochore 

designs the courses with Autumn 

three day events in mind. 

BE100 section A was a tightly 

fought section. Plenty of sub thirty 

tests, but eventual winner was Tyler 

Cassells on the seven year old Clonguish 

Lady Ferro who finished 0.3 head of 

Jessica Watts, when they added 1.2 too 

fast time faults across the country. 

Tyler also finished second in BE100 

section C, behind Loretta Joynson. 

Jeanette Brakewell led from the start 

in BE100 section B, a section that was 

marked higher in the dressage phase. 

A 25.8 has Jeanette nicely out in front 

throughout. 

Amicitia was having his third win of the 

season for Oliver Lofthouse. Despite 

rolling a pole they scored 24.3 in the first 

phase, their section caused more faults in 

the show jumping than any other. 

A super smart test for Ibby McPherson in 

novice section E scoring 25, then adding 

0.8 too fast time faults still kept them five 

marks ahead. 

Hannah Bate and the Lancelot sired 

Galvinised were victorious in novice 

section F. When Lucy Morgan picked up 

1.2 time faults cross country, meaning 

that Hannah took the class as they both 

scored 26 in their dressage tests. 

Alice Pearson dominated the open novice. 

Her winning ride was the experienced 

Word On The Street who finished on his 

impressive dressage of 22.5, this had them

The well known Zenshera and Ros Canter 

went ahead of Oliver Townend in the open 

intermediate when Oliver’s ride Fenyas 

Elegance lowered a rail show jumping. 

With plenty of low dressage scores, Ros 

and Zenshera’s speedy double clear put 

them to top spot. 

While Ros also finished third in the 

intermediate on No Excuse. With a 

storming lead in the dressage of 20.2 

Ros just gave the seven year old a steady 

round picking up 9.2 time faults.

from the 7 days of competition 

at the prestigious 2016 

SEIB Trailblazers National 

Championships at Stoneleigh 

Park, Warwickshire. 

The Trailblazers series 

provides opportunities for 

amateur riders to compete at a 

level that they are comfortable 

with, to progress through 

first round and second round 

competitions and ultimately 

to qualify and compete at 

the prestigious National 

Championships, without 

the costs and pressures 

associated with affiliated 

events. Held in the beautiful 

arenas at Stoneleigh, classes 

at the Championships 

include showing, dressage, 

show jumping and combined 

training. Combinations often 

return to the Championships 

year after year in an attempt to 

claim a coveted championship 

title. 

The dressage and showing 

classes were held on the 

first weekend of the SEIB 

Trailblazers 

Championships. 

The Dodson & 

Horrell Dressage 

Championships 

were spilt in 

to Junior and 

Senior sections, 

each with three 

classes. They 

are held over two 

days, using a points 

system to determine 

the champion.

Championship titles with her 

horse, Take the Biscuit. Sarah 

bought 13-year-old Take the 

Biscuit (Biscuit) last July and 

has introduced him to showing 

herself. “He wasn’t the horse 

he is today, in fact my dad 

told me not to buy him, it’s a

The first Friday evening of the 

Championships welcomed the 

return of last year’s Master 

Class in the Park which was 

supported by Equestrivan this 

year. The master class was 

hosted by four-star eventer 

and Grand Prix dressage 

rider Ruth Edge. Attendees 

enjoyed an entertaining and 

educational demonstration 

by Ruth, who rode two of her 

dressage horses and offered 

an insight into the building

riders continue their success in

Training. Seven local riders claimed 

championship titles including Emma 

Oakden, from Queniborough, who 

won the Countrywide Senior 85cm 

Show Jumping Championship. Emma 

won the championship aboard her 

15.2hh Thoroughbred cross mare, 

Lily May. She bought the mare as an 

unbroken two-year-old, and broke 

her in at four. Now she is twelve 

and the Trailblazers final features 

on Emma’s competition calendar 

every year. “I love Trailblazers, and 

have been competing at the final for 

over ten years, so it was such a good 

feeling to have finally won the title 

after all this time,” she says. “I came 

close to it last year as Lily May was 

reserve champion in the 95cm class, 

but I started to wonder if I’d ever 

actually win it! Lily seems to like

title with her own horse, Idol Hero. 

Connie also won the Dodson & 

Horrell Junior Novice Dressage 

Championship. “The Trailblazers 

Championships have been fantastic 

for Connie,” says Helen Crosland, 

Connie’s aunt. “It has given her 

something to aim for and work 

towards each year they have been 

together. The atmosphere is great, 

as is the setting and competitions. 

It is great for people who don’t want 

to go down the expensive affiliated 

route, to experience a championship 

show.” Connie brought her new pony, 

Orlando, to the Championships as 

well, placing second in the Solutions 

Saddles Pony Preliminary Combined 

Training Championship. Connie, 

who hopes to represent Team GB 

on the international stage one 

day, has benefited greatly from the 

Championship experience. 

Two-time Hickstead Derby winner 

Trevor Breen entertained the crowds 

during his masterclass on the second 

Friday evening, demonstrating his 

favourite grid work exercises aboard 

his five-year-old Spanish-bred 

young horse. He also demonstrated 

his preferred warm-up techniques, 

emphasizing relaxation and light 

aids and surely inspiring many of the 

assembled competitors prior to their 

own competition warm-ups. 

With no Registration fees for horse 

or rider, Trailblazers is increasingly 

popular across the country and 

first round qualifying competitions 

are already underway for the 2017 

Trailblazers National Championships.

Show 2016 was heralded 

a huge success by all who 

attended. The weather was 

glorious and the Side Saddle 

Ladies were out in force, to 

such a high standard.

strong intentions, taking 1st

Not to be outdone, Hazel Allin and 

The Aviator won the Small Riding 

Horse and took Reserve Champion. 

The Caro Cripps had some fantasticly 

creative entries. Emma Brown riding 

The Naughty Monk did a great routine to 

Jungle Book, ably assisted by her dog and 

other Area 12 Members, to take 4th place. 

The evening though, belonged to Lauren 

riding Ashton Flight, whose interpretation 

of Mary Poppins was a definite winner of 

the night, with Chloe Gunn giving a very 

passable performance as Dick van Dyke! 

Adult Newcomers this year was won by 

Sarah Beirne riding Amanda Chatfield’s 

Kingsclough Masquerade. 

Junior Rider Violet Barton had a brilliant 

weekend. Some of their highlights 

included being highest Junior rider in the 

Dressage with Jumping, a 2nd place in 

the Junior Rider Performance Pony and 

taking Junior Novice Rider of the Year 

Championship. 

Reserve Adult Side Saddle Rider of the 

Year went to Lauren Allin who produced 

a consistent score in the Adult Open 

Equitation, Turnout and jumping. In only 

their second season riding in the Adult

In the team competitions Area 12 were 

very strong taking 2nd place in the 

Equitation jumping with Lauren Allin, 

Rachael Barker, Chloe Gunn and Bruce 

Langley-McKim and in the showjumping 

relay Area 12 took 1st and 3rd places. Well 

done all. 

Area 5 were out in force this year. Katie 

Gulliver has been to the Nationals a 

few times but has only attempted small 

or individual classes as she is an RDA

needed to be water proof that evening!

Lancelot last year, Liz 

has had to work hard 

on his flat work. She 

was delighted to come 2nd

Class. A past Side Saddle 

Rider of the Year no less than six times, Liz 

is no stranger to the class having won it on 

several different horses. Lord Manhattan 

looks set to perhaps increase the record 

next year! Together they also won the 

Championship in the Ladies that Lunch 

with Roger, Mature Riders Classes. 

Jorja Deacon (junior) on Duchess had a 

very successful time showing how much 

their flat work had improved when scoring 

a massive 70% + in their dressage test. 

Jorja was also 3rd in the Junior Equitation. 

New member Jessica Ross took the centre 

stage with her very amusing rendition of 

“The day in the life of a Country Vet” in 

the Rococo Memorial Pas Seul Class. This 

was the first time Jess had competed at 

the show and her win thrilled everyone 

especially her helpers, Mum Emma and 

sister Annabelle. This was a real family 

affair as Grandad, a real vet, made the 

props and Grandma did the music and the 

costumes. 

Pippa Booth on Charlie had her best 

Nationals to date achieving the high 

accolade of Intermediate Reserve Rider 

of the Year. Charlie is much happier on 

the hunting field and Pippa has worked 

hard to settle him in an arena. Pippa 

and Charlie’s jumping ability certainly 

proved how much their training ground

out hunting has helped as they scored an 

amazing amount for their skills in this

Laura Elliot and Percy also had an 

incredible show winning the WHP, their 

section of the Mature Riders and achieving 

a personal best in all their dressage 

classes. Like Pippa, Laura is more often 

seen on the hunting field! 

Both Pippa and Laura received their SSA 

Hunt Button this year and were members 

of the 2nd placed Legless Right Ladies 

Area 5 scurry jumping team along with 

Kelle King on Super Trouper. 

Kelle and Trouper are much improved with 

their jumping now Trooper has realised 

that every jump need not be cleared by 

ten foot leaps! Trooper is a Hackney X 

Gelderlander who’s main job is carriage 

driving!

the National for the first time staying 

over with their two lovely mares Tilly and 

Chloe Gunn and Oaklawn Gypsy, 4th Adult 

Open Equitation

That’s why I love the Hallamshire - a 

start to so many riding journeys! We 

also had the not so welcome call by the 

ambulance service. Get well soon Lauren

Notts Derbys fourth show of 

the year, for double loyalty

winners. Saturday shows are 

proving popular with the busiest 

show this year, also full sized 

sashes to 6th in each place.

Local riders qualify for Horse of 

the Year Show (HOYS) 2016 

The final SEIB Insurance Broker’s 

Search for a Star qualifier and the 

penultimate SEIB Insurance Broker’s 

Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifier of 

2016 took place at Vale View Equestrian 

Centre on Sunday 7 August 2016. A huge 

entry gave the team of judges plenty to do 

and riders from the Equestrian Life region 

had stiff competition to gain qualification 

for the prestigious Horse of the Year Show. 

The working hunters faced a 

straightforward course, but a brush with 

rails caused problems for several riders. 

In the final placings, first place went to 

Georgina Teece, 24, from Middlesborough, 

riding her own Faerie Salakadu, stable 

name Ruby. “This is our first attempt at 

showing. We did 2 unaffiliated shows 

last year but we decided to have a go at 

Search for a Star after a friend qualified 

earlier this year,” said an excited Georgina. 

Second place went to Jenny Eyton-Jones, 

25, from Lancashire, riding her own 

Kerannen Brynn. Jenny bought the 7-yearold 

bay gelding, by the TB stallion, Sirens 

Missile, out of a Section D mare, when he 

was just 3 ½ years old, and broke him in 

herself. 

Riding Club Show Horse entrants 

negotiated rustic trotting poles, a rustic 

fence, and a rainbow fence that caused a 

few faults. First place went to bay gelding, 

Roos Dead Ringer, known as Rafferty, 

owned and ridden by Sammy Clare, 20, 

from Cheshire. Sammy’s mum, Roe, 

said, “We have been going to HOYS since 

Sammy was 4 years old and have watched 

every year in awe. I can’t believe we have 

now qualified.” Jenny Eyton-Jones took 

second place with Brynn and then had 

the difficult decision of whether to take 

the qualifying place in the Workers or the 

Riding Club Show Horse as, under SFAS 

rules, she is only allowed to take one 

qualifying place. 

In the Riding Horse/Hack class, first place 

2nd Racehorse to Riding Horse Paul Langrick 

and Clonard Lad 

1st Riding Club Show Horse Sammy Clare and 

Roos Dead Ringer 

went to Hannah Chisman, 

26, from Worcester, riding 

her own Nicene Creed, 

known as Micky. Second 

place went to Joyce Lomas, 

from Leicestershire, riding 

her own Powder King. The 

grey gelding started out in racing and 

was trained by Chris Bealby, but he did 

not settle to racing and after 2 runs in 

bumpers Joyce bought him as a 4-year-old. 

“Showing is all a bit new to us, but he is 

getting the hang of it,” said Joyce. 

Mary’s Delight, stable name “Conker”, 

took first place in the Ponies class. Owned 

and ridden by Daisy-May Drury, 18, from 

Wigan, she was thrilled to qualify. Second 

place went to Cadvalley Orpheous, known 

as Otto, ridden by Chloe Neve, 9, and 

owned by her grandma, Gill Neve. 

First place in the Show Hunter class went 

to Helen Cowley riding her own Dragons 

Den. The 18.1hh bay gelding, known 

as MJ, has only just turned 6. Second 

place went to Sarita Schmid’s Purple 

Prince, ridden by Sarah Booth, 20, from 

Rotherham. 

Helen Cowley was on a roll, taking the top 

spot with her cob, Aero. Under SFAS rules, 

riders may only have one entry at HOYS 

and Helen decided that she would take 

her hunter, Dragons Den. Therefore, third 

place and claiming the second qualifying 

ticket in the Cob class was Ruth Minton 

riding Alison Lovatt’s 9-year-old, Teddy 

Blu, from Stone, Staffordshire. Alison has 

owned Teddy for 5 years. The striking 

chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail 

originally came from Ireland and was sold 

through Goresbridge sales as a 4-year-old. 

Alison took him on as a hunter and has 

hunted with the Albrighton Woodland 

regularly since then. “We are both chuffed 

to bits. It is so exciting that we will be 

going to HOYS”, said Alison.

In the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse 

class, first place went to Sarah Ward’s 

What Of It, ridden by Hannah Horton, 

22. “I have only been riding him for three 

weeks, and this is his first ever show”, 

said a delighted Hannah. “We were on 

the wait list for the Burghley qualifier, so 

we thought we had better come and have 

a go here. He is very special”, said Sarah. 

Second place went to Paul Langrick, 

riding Rebecca O’Neill’s chestnut gelding, 

Clonard Lad. “This time last year he was 

only just out of training, and he has come 

on so much since then”, said Paul. Clonard 

Lad won twice under rules from 10 starts 

over fences and in hurdle races, earning 

over £16,000 in prize money. “This is 

completely different to what they had 

known, but he is chilled at home. He does 

some dressage and we just pick the shows”, 

said a delighted Paul. This is their second 

season showing and Paul has registered 

him this year as a large riding horse.

Insurance Brokers Search for a Star 

Championship finals at the Horse of The 

Year Show, 5th – 9th October 2016, at the 

Birmingham NEC.

UK Riders National 

Championships 2016

This year’s National Championships 

saw riders from all over the country 

coming to compete against each 

other, they had all qualified at regional 

finals and the best from these came to the 

finals. The day dawned rather dull and 

cold but at least it was dry with a rather 

sharp breeze blowing. Carol and Lauren of 

Arena UK did a wonderful job of hosting 

these finals, and getting dressage results 

up super quickly. The junior classes of 

the show jumping and dressage were 

rather disappointing, but the seniors 

more than made up for this with both the 

Preliminary and Novice classes having to 

be split. 

The junior 70cm show jumping was 

won by Scotsford Last Chance and Aoife 

Rew from Essex who also won the 80cm 

class, it was her first year competing at 

our challenge so very good wins for her 

pony. Second place was taken by Tonto 

and Cassey Grace who qualified at Eland 

Lodge, with third place going to Martha 

Deborah Norgate 

on Betty 

Ward and Drummer Boy an 

18 year old pony who was 

also 7th in the 80cm class. 

Martha is also cheerleader 

and is the one on top of the

Blue Lightening who travelled all the way 

from Hexham in Northumberland to be 

with us. 

The senior 70 cm was won by Grace 

Johnson riding Royston who was due to be 

put down at 6 months due to lack of space 

he is now 11 years old and thinks he is a 

giraffe at dressage but loves show jumping

place was taken by Japalouppe and 

Charlotte Boon who qualified at Sissons 

Farm, third was Sally McNaughton,one 

of our regular competitors, on Gunner

The same two placings in the 80 cm 

were taken by the same riders with third 

place taken by Heart Beat song with Sam 

Leeson an ex racehorse who also did the 

ESUK championships the week before 

and Cricklands Winter League finals they 

received their qualifications at Burbage 

Riding Club. First place in the 90 cm 

was taken by Japalouppe and Charlotte 

Boon finally achieving their dream of a 

first place, with Oliver Twist V ridden by 

Frankie Jones from Newcastle coming 

second, third place was won by home 

bred China’s Starmix Adorable ridden by 

Michael Suddes who also won the one 

meter class being the only competitor. 

The junior dressage started off with intro

respectable 68.2%, second was Alex Hale

was taken by Olivier Whiston-Riley riding 

Dennis The Menace, second was Hawkhill 

Flash ridden by Freya Bird, teddy as he is 

known at home is a 14.2 New Forest Pony 

and is six years old, they came from Eland 

Lodge. 

The Preliminary and Novice senior 

dressage classes had to be split into 

two sections to make it fair for the 

competitors. The Intro B class saw 

Marianne Brown riding Alvescott Wise 

One and watch Me taking first and second 

placings, watch Me is owned by Sharon 

Priestly and is a six year old pure bred 

Hanoverian whilst Alvescott Wise One 

is a English warm Blood and half brother 

to the winner who often does his own 

version of the test. Third place was taken 

by Becci Bishop riding Gently Does It, it 

was their first time at UK Riders Finals. 

Section A of Preliminary 13 was won by 

Deborah Norgate on Betty who qualified 

at Sissons Farm achieving 68.65% second 

was Sarah Bird on Riley from Burbage 

Riding Club with the third place going to 

Titus Lady Chocolate a Freisian/American 

trotter mare and Catriona Paterson, also 

from Sissons. 

Section B was won by Koka Crusader and 

Paige Robson with a fantastic 77.88% she 

has owned her since she was 3 years old 

so must take all the credit for the training. 

Second was Riversong ridden by Karen 

Thompson from Kesteven Rideability, 

she works in the riding school and does 

RDA work and is hoping to go to the RDA 

Nationals next year. Third place was taken 

by Fieldmaster and Sharon White another 

local horse who also came third last year. 

The Novice 28 section A saw Kerry Wright 

on Born To Do It taking the honours with 

Sharon Cooknell and Sun Delight coming 

second, third place was taken by Pendall 

Dazzler and Meghan Waring who qualified 

at Grey fern Park. 

Section B of this class once again saw 

Koka Crusader winning with Karen 

Thompson once again mirroring their 

results from the preliminary class, Joanne 

Eldridge and Cayak took the third prize. 

Cayak who travelled all the way from 

Suffolk has appeared in three films so is a 

bit of a celebrity. 

There were some classy horses in the 

Elementary 42 section with Ellie ridden by 

Charlotte Hansen and coming from Eland 

lodge taking the first prize with 70.31% 

second went to Pronto (GB) and Jennifer 

Latchford who she has owned from an 

unbroken youngster, she said it was love 

at first sight. Third place went to Galoway 

Foxy and Helen Griffiths. 

Finally we come to the two ex-racehorse 

classes which were most kindly sponsored 

by Richard Sharpe, The Preliminary 12 

was won by Claire Saddler on Our Joan 

with 72.96% second was Karen Wells on 

Maizin with 72.59% and third place was 

taken by Kerry Wright on Empire Dancer 

with 69.07%. The Novice27 saw the first 

two places going to the same horses whilst 

third place was taken by Victoria Barrass 

on College Land Boy from High Plains in 

Northumberland. 

We would like to take this opportunity to 

thank all the judges, writers, stewards and 

any other helpers especially Carol and 

Lauren of Arena UK for making it such a 

special day for our riders.

Blackburn became the 

new location for the 

Royal Lancashire Show this year. 

At the start of the year it wasn’t 

certain the show would go ahead 

but thanks to the enthusiasm, 

determination and a lot of hard 

work from a very small team of 

volunteers the show went ahead. 

A new location will always pose 

problems, one of the main ones being 

access and parking for both exhibitors and 

visitors attending the show. Fortunately, 

there was a very efficient grounds team 

working alongside the event management 

officials, who adapted and amended access 

gateways, parking locations and ring 

layouts as the show went on. Thankfully 

people were patient and supportive whilst 

things got altered but of course we all 

know the weather is out of our control. 

The first day of the three day show in the 

Light Horse section scheduled many of the 

In-Hand Showing classes. All three rings 

set a schedule of over 80 classes to include 

breeding and open showing for everything 

from Potential Sport Horses, Hunter 

Breeding, Pure and Part-Bred Arabians, 

Coloured Horses and Ponies plus a myriad 

of classes for the many British Native 

Ponies. 

The first ‘crowned’ champion of the show 

was in the Hunter Breeding Group and 

came from the yearlings in that group, a 

lovely rich bay, Strinesdale Marksman, 

owned by a delighted Gaynor Hester 

and shown in the ring by Yorkshireman, 

Chris Shackleton. All rings were busy 

throughout the morning, Welsh Breeds, 

with Bronze Medal Awards on offer, 

ran from early in the morning, starting 

with the Section ‘A’s, judged by Mr B 

Hyslop (Maxwell Town). After assessing

yearling took the 

honours, winning his 

class then taking the ‘A’ 

Championship. There 

were some exceptional 

ponies exhibited in the 

group of classes but this 

youngster, Pinewell Storm, 

owned by M Higgins and handled by Colin 

Tibbey obviously impressed the judge 

enough to take top spot. 

Section B’s, came after the A’s in that 

ring and Laraine Price had put her lovely 

palomino pony, Waxwing Penny Jubilee 

into the very capable hands of Abbie 

Devenney and another welsh champion 

crowned. Section C’s and D’s took place 

in the afternoon with Helen Leach 

(COEDEN) and Mr D Griffiths (DAFRYN) 

judging each respectively. 

Whilst the Hunter Breeding was taking 

place in one ring, welsh in another, 

miniatures started off in the third ring, 

from the smallest to the tallest. The 

Showing Register had decided to use The 

Royal Lancashire Show as their venue for 

the Northern regional finals so had lots 

of sections over all three days. The final 

Championship on Day 1 was the Overall 

Supreme In-Hand Championship the 

title going to the five year old Section 

C stallion, Bryncarreg Alfie Boe, owned 

Sec D Stallion class winner-Callistalodge 

Hercules-David Baird - Graham Roberts.

and bred by John Garry Watson from 

West Yorkshire, the Reserve Supreme 

came from the Section D, 2-3 yr old class, 

Coldwell Tywysoges owned by W. Ennion 

and shown by Graham Roberts. A fabulous 

end to a very successful day. 

Day two saw the ridden classes take over. 

B.S.P.S. and TSR took over Ring 1 in the 

morning, with both doing their Lead-Rein 

and First Ridden Classes. Young Madison 

Hughes had a great morning riding Tracy 

Miller’s Bouquet of Crafton she won the 

BSPS Heritage Lead-Rein class and then 

went on to be Mini Champion of the 

group. Ring two was totally dominated all 

day with B.S.P.S. Working Hunter Ponies 

including Heritage M & M Qualiers. In 

the Nursery Stakes, Rachel Barnes was 

delighted with her pony Scotgate Spot-On, 

ridden by Thomas Barnes when they won 

the class in great style.

When the final day began the weather 

had brightened up, ring boundaries had 

been moved and as the previous day was 

mainly ‘pony’ now it was the turn of the 

‘Horses’. First off in Ring two were the 

Royal International Open Working Hunter 

Qualifier, the set course was challenging 

and well up to the standard that will be 

at the final despite the fairly heavy going 

and tricky ground conditions. Chantelle 

Salkeld rode through on her own Zagretty 

to take first place and the Qualifying 

ticket a very close final result with only 1 

mark dividing the top two places. 

Following on were the Ridden Irish 

Draught horses in a ring that was perfectly 

designed for these Hunters, Workers and 

big ground swallowing Irish Draughts. 

Natural undulating ground with natural 

woodland features not only gave a lovely 

track but also plenty of room to gallop and 

show off their paces. Hazevern Cardigan 

Bay, owned by Catherine Dickinson 

was ridden by Ant Brooks and gave a 

superb performance, Esther Lloyd-Jones 

in second on her super grey and Lisa 

Knowles’s Bowland Lucky Be took third. 

The other two rings gave plenty of 

opportunities for competitors with the 

ever popular ‘Traditional’ coloured horses 

and ponies with more Chaps classes and 

TGCA classes. Foxlea Jazz, an eye catching 

piebald mare owned by Katie Barker from 

Settle in West Yorkshire stood as C.H.A.P.S 

In-Hand Champion giving handler Chris 

Shackleton even more glory handling this 

beautiful mare in that section. Traditional 

Gypsy Cobs were in abundance on this 

final day. The TGCA Quest for a Star 

Championship was won by Lisa Whittle 

on her stunning and prolific winning 

coloured stallion The Pied Piper. Reserve 

Champion was an In-Hand exhibitor

With so many classes, too many to give 

fair coverage to, a final mention for 

Helena Pixton riding The Blue Shade

Saddle and Concours D’elegance and 

Jessica Dunn riding Brooklands Odd Sox 

in the Open Cob and the Novice Cob and 

winning both. A few pictures have been

As the show was reaching its end 

there was only the Supreme Ridden 

Championship left, inviting Champions 

from day two and day three to take part. 

Sadly only a few had returned to take part. 

The judges conferred and pulled forward 

the stunning grey Maxi cob, ‘Colby’ owned 

by Hazel Lund Reserve Supreme going to 

a lovely non-traditonal skewbald, Gallileo, 

both being local to the Blackburn area.

PONY CLUB 

23rd - 24th JULY 2016 

BUCKMINSTER PARK 

On 23rd and 24th July, the Belvoir 

Hunt Branch of The Pony Club 

organised the East Midlands 

Area Eventing in the beautiful 

setting of Buckminster Park, nr 

Melton Mowbray Leicestershire, 

with 350 competitors across 

classes from 1.10m Open, 

through 1m, 90cm and a new 

80cm class. 

Area Eventing 

East Midlands (Area 6) Qualifier for The Stonar Pony 

Club Eventing Championships, Cholmondeley Castle, 

Cheshire. 

An interesting SJ track was 

cleverly designed by Beau 

Wood, to make use of the tree 

in the arena, and required 

smart riding to gain a clear 

round. 

The XC course was designed and 

built by Guy Herbert, of the Burghley 

Horse Trials course building team, 

with help from Kate Letchford and Harry 

Park, organisers of Buckminster BE, 

and the Buckminster Estate and Farms 

teams. Significant ground work was 

done to ensure fantastic going for the 

horses, and 350 competitors enjoyed the 

chance to gallop around this beautiful 

parkland. It used some of the same 110 

and 1m fences as Buckminster BE, but 

with more technical options as befits a 

Championship qualifier and a unique 

route around the scenic Buckminster 

Trout Lake, plus specific PC90 and PC80 

courses, which are not available at the BE 

event. 

Qualifying for the Open Championships 

were the Belvoir Open Team of Lucy 

Scholl, Amelia Scholl, Rosie Rollinson and 

Marianne Knipe, who are pictured with 

the impressive Hunts Trophy, which dates

Middleton, Charlotte Parsley and Jake 

Surl, together with the High Peak Hunt 

team of Lucy Bednall, Jess Sutton, Ailis 

Mctaggart and Tara O’Rourke. PC90 

Individuals who qualified were Charlotte 

Kemsley-Pein of the Fernie; Elise Cunliffe, 

Cottesmore; Claudia Campbell, Burghley; 

and Georgia Wright of the Scunthorpe and 

District. 

There was also the first running of a 

popular PC80 class, with a new course 

of 80cm XC fences built by Guy Herbert

competition, a forerunner of The Pony 

Club Landrover Regional Competitions 

that will include eventing as well as the 

current show jumping and dressage for 

2017. 

The Mega Meynells team won the PC80, 

with the Burton Hunt Hurricanes 2nd and 

the Burton Hunt Spitfires 3rd.

Midlands to the Area Eventing. We had 

great support from so many people, 

including our hosts the Tollemache Family

XC and ground care input, Beau Wood

Frickley BE is Firmly 

On the 

Map! 

Frickley Hall firmly established itself 

as a major UK eventing venue, when 

over the period 28th-31st of July 

2016, it hosted the National Under 18 

Championships, by very kind permission 

of Mr Charlie and Mrs Jayne Warde-Aldam. 

Each of the National classes involved eight 

teams of ten riders, representing different 

areas of Great Britain. There were prizes 

for the best individuals, as well as the best 

teams. 

U18s Frickley Park championships

We are all very proud of our Midland riders, 

it takes a lot of work and dedication for our 

young riders to get themselves prepared 

and qualified for the championships each 

year and it’s always difficult to decide who 

will be going on the competitive strong 

teams that represent our region. We felt we 

had a great team of horses and riders for 

both the 100 championships and the 1* and 

that we were as already “in it to win it” the 

well-known Midlands moto. 

We arrived early on the Wednesday 

morning to set up the Midlands HQ and 

the very “can do” Frickley organising 

team were amazing right from the start, 

each team had a regional lorry park so we 

could be based together and that made 

communications much easier and it really 

felt like a championship event straight 

away. We had our Midlands stables all 

together and we started preparations for 

the important trot ups. 

The horses look amazing as did the 

riders now wearing their all-important 

regional jackets, massive thank you to 

Noble Outfitters for their very generous 

sponsorship of the fabulous jackets and to 

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) for the 

cross country skins and their continued 

support for our Midlands U18 riders some 

of which have been current university 

students at NTU while representing the 

midlands region. 

The first trot up saw all the Midlands 

horses accepted and although we knew we 

had a sound team it’s always a tense time. 

The dressage was a fantastic setting in 

front of the main house and gave the event 

a real championship feel, the 100 riders

and the 1* riders ran at the same time 

which was a little tricky for us Coaches 

but as ever we worked well as a team and 

all riders were helped with their warm 

ups where needed and very much the 

team support from parents and Midlands 

supporters to ensure all the riders were 

in the ring, looking amazing, focused 

and relaxed as possible. We pulled out 

some excellent dressage scores. We ended 

up with Midlands in the lead after the 

dressage! 

With dressage out of the way the endless 

course walks began and a lot of tactical talk 

being done. Having measured the course 

length we already knew that the time for 

the 100 was very doable but the time for 

the 1* was going to be very influential. 

This is where straight options and very 

economical lines around the whole course 

would be needed. 

The courses had a hint of old fashioned 

galloping design to them, up to height 

and bold riding required but both also 

had enough technical questions to keep 

the riders on their toes and a brave but 

thinking rider was going to be needed. 

We had our riders well informed about 

how the course was riding, all riders gave 

feedback as soon as they returned off the 

course especially our early riders and we 

had spotters around the course feeding 

back to us coaches in the collecting ring, 

and we even took advantage of the use 

of smart phones to relay videos of riders

jumping through combinations for the 

remaining riders to watch in the collecting 

ring to help them understand how best to 

ride those fences as well as help increase 

their confidence that they could jump them 

well. 

Saturday night was focused around some 

well-deserved celebrations but also a lot 

of attention on the wonderful horses, so 

plenty of cold treatments for their legs, 

walking and grazing in hand to ensure 

they all come out bouncing, fit and happy 

the next morning. And they did! We only 

had one horse that we did not present 

as the horse was not 100% and horse’s 

welfare is always at the top of priority 

list, and as disappointing as it is, there is 

always another day. We also had a very 

unfortunate fall for one rider on the cross 

country course, which was such a shame as 

they were flying up to that point. 

Show jumping was tough and up to height 

and a technical test for these young riders 

and for some slightly tired horses that gave 

it their all the day before. 

Our 100 riders did an amazing job and six 

of our ten riders went clear and this gave 

our top four riders an amazing finish with

all four finishing on their dressage score 

and meaning we won the 100 regional 

championship! All the riders play a really 

important part in the winning as they all 

support each other so much and all build 

the winning attitude between them, but 

the top four scores do count and that went 

to Lauren Miller riding Wisla on a penalty 

score of 32, Stephanie Faulkner riding Spot 

on Finale with a penalty score of 33.9, India 

Pover on Baydale Jupiter with a penalty 

score of 34.1 and Molly Brown on Ifan with 

a penalty score of 35.4 

But we cannot not mention all the other 

great riders and horses close on the tail of 

these top scoring riders. Ellie Healy, Oliver 

Jackson (this month’s cover star), Alice 

Kilham, Jennie Elliott, Emelia Petchell and 

Ella Frow. 

The 1* show jumping was a big track and 

it was very clever course building which 

made it a true championship course with 

a tight time as well. This course required 

a really competent rider who could work 

through the gears and keep the horses 

really forward yet careful and a lot of 

related distances and influential turns back 

onto fences. The course was proving to be 

very influential and this was a very nerve 

wracking time as a coach on the floor. 

So we had 8 riders out of the ten to take 

forward. And they were never more focused 

and ready to try and retain the Midlands 

championship status from last year. 

And there was nothing in it, we went into 

the show jumping in a very strong position, 

but the course was really challenging 

everyone, there were only a handful of 

clear rounds overall, but we went into it 

with great confidence knowing that we had 

done our training and the riders could hold 

their nerve and we could maintain their 

position. Unfortunately it didn’t go quite 

to plan but nobody did anything wrong

it was just a big ask for some relatively 

tired horses most of which doing their first 

championship three day event. One horse 

slipped slightly off a sharp corner, one just 

touched the planks that stayed for ages 

but then fell and one breathed on a fence 

coming out of the combination and it fell, 

but that is how it goes sometimes and we 

really couldn’t be prouder of each and 

every one of them. 

But we were still right on the winners’ 

tails and only one showjump pole down 

between 80 horses behind the deserved 

winner’s from Eastern region. Our top four 

scorers consisted of Lucy Robinson riding 

Red Jazz, Emily Grace on Direct Region, 

Harry Stott on Its Sharon’s Choice, and 

Elicia Miller riding Gentleman George. 

The rest of the team consisted of Lucy 

Frankham, Heidi Coy, Lucy Scholl, Imi 

McCance, Victoria Hopkinson and Lucy 

Varley, again the whole team contribute 

and build that all important team 

confidence that puts the results on the 

board and they really are all winners in our 

eyes! 

Other Weekend Successes! 

The event, however, was not just about 

the National Under 18 classes. Several of 

our local riders did well in the many other 

classes, which were available for all levels 

of experience. 

Ellie Clarke won the Atlas Equestrian BE 

90 sec H on Mrs Helen Marsh’s Lex IV. 

In Henkel BE 90 sec P double clears saw 

ribbons for two of our local riders. Sophie 

Johnson took 3rd with her Carra Chillout 

Lauren Miller and Wisla 4th BE100u18 

and Daisy-may Guest made further 

progress with her Pinwizard, to claim 8th 

place. 

Emily Hobson, from Moorhouse had a 

good win in the Argo Feeds BE 100 sec C 

with Ms Victoria Mudd’s Anouar, finishing 

on 31.6, after a 30.8 dressage. Mrs Laura 

Greenhalgh, partnering Mrs Sarah Reeve’s 

Stanhopes Travelling Man, won Clipper 

Group BE 100 sec D on their dressage score 

of 30. In the same class, Scott Wallace took 

the blue rosette on his Miserden Solitaire. 

The same rider, with one of his other rides, 

Dycho, also claimed another second place 

in Ridings Equine sponsored BE 100 sec 

E. Again, a few XC time faults between 

him and the red. Also in that section, 

Leigh Walker and her Karina recorded a 

double clear but 6.8 time faults meant they 

could not finish better than ninth, on that 

occasion. In Rudding Park BE 100 Plus sec 

G, the success story of Sarah Colgan and 

Machno Radience continued, with another 

win. Mrs Sally Hoyle’s black gelding 

has since qualified for the Badminton 

Mitsubishi Motors Cup in 2017. In the same 

class at Frickley, Tina Canton was third on 

Foxisle Reflection. 

Savills Intermediate Novice saw an 

excellent win for Windy Miller and Nicola 

Baguley, which included a fine dressage 

score of 25.0. Fiona Davidson was always 

in contention on her Lissyegan Junior Guy 

with her 26.8 dressage but 6.8 time faults 

was only good enough for second place. 

A great pity, because that result cost the 

accomplished Leics based rider a hattrick, 

as she won both novice classes. The 

Bloomfield Horseboxes Novice sec K went 

to Cranny Hill Chosen and the Throstle 

Nest Saddlery Novice sec L to Foxfield 

Chanteuse.

Show 

Springwood Riding Club. Horsley, 

Derbyshire had a very well attended 

Supreme Open Show on Sunday 

24th July. The quality of horses/ 

ponies was as in all their shows 

very good. The classes were all 

well attended and the Judges 

had a hard time to split the 

points in judging them all. 

All the sections had their 

champions right down to the 

Handy Pony. You may think 

WHY have Handy Pony at an 

Open Show, the younger sisters 

and brothers enjoy the class while 

older ones are competing and it’s 

fun. 

The judges were all very good, 

conscientious and patient with all in the 

classes. The committee did a sterling job 

of putting together and running the whole 

day. Well done Springwood Riding Club a 

great day was had by all.

Trailblazers Show jumping – starting at 65cm introductory level through 

to 1.05cm providing an opportunity to qualify for an Unaffiliated National 

Championships. 

Dressage – we do trailblazers, affiliated & unaffiliated classes at Vale 

View from walk trot introductory tests through to Grand Prix tests, you 

will need to enter at least 4 days before the competition and please 

telephone if you need to make a late entry. Payment must be made at 

time of booking to confirm your entry, and is non-refundable once paid.
