COVER STORY
UNIS’ newest facility in Zhongshan,
China boasts over one million square-feet
of factory and showroom floor space.
UNIS:
a path to innovation
is a meal served in
small doses, or the process of
"Innovation
innovation starts there," says
Universal Space's Marketing Manager
Kirill Murawski. "Not every innovative
product starts with a ground-breaking
idea that can potentially change the
industry.
"In fact, many of them come into
existence as a result of our designers
thinking about adding small but significant
new features to an already existing
formula."
LARGE-SCALE INNOVATION
While these words ring true, UNIS
is certainly not one for working exclusively
on the small scale. A new 1.4
million square-foot factory opened last
year--a grand ambition in the amusement
industry. The new factory is
equipped with state-of-the-art molding
and laser cutting equipment.
PLAY METER 52 NOVEMBER 2016
The large-scale Bandit
Express is part amusement
ride, video game,
and redemption game.
"Of course our factory has been a
great motivator for us," says Murawski,
"but to us, the innovative products that
we can develop and produce inside of
this new facility have always been the
most important result of the expansion."
R&D INNOVATION
The new building is also dedicated
to UNIS' expansive research and development
team. UNIS actually employs
three game design teams located in
Japan, Toronto, and China, which
is the largest.
"These people in all of these
teams work extremely hard and
often work weekends," says
Murawski. "We're all extremely
proud of them. All together we
have around 100 people around
the globe brainstorming new
games every day."
The result of the work of the
UNIS game design teams can
be seen in the latest prominent
releases, most of which contain
innovative features in one form
or another.
VOICE-CONTROLLED
INNOVATION
For example, the recently
introduced Super Big Rig is
a family interactive game that
invites all members of the family
to play together.
Players control the game
through a built-in microphone,
using voice commands. From the
outside, the game looks like a truckthemed
kiddie ride, but UNIS is certain
that its cocktail of looks and innovative
features is what the industry needs in
this category.
"With the Super Big Rig, we contemplated
what makes a general kiddie
ride appealing," says Murawski. "We
found that many of these games allow
children to imagine what it is like to be
a grown up in a grown up profession.
So with the Super Big Rig we went for
scale."
The Super Big Rig looks like a truck-themed kiddie
ride, but it’s really a game that uses a built-in
microphone and voice commands.
The game includes a giant steering
wheel and a proper horn pulley, which
makes a loud noise, just like a real
truck horn. Once the basics were done,
UNIS challenged its R&D department
to add a "pinch of innovation."
"This is what led us to the voice
command system we have in the game
now," says Murawski.
UNIS is known for a having an
extensive lineup of family-suited products,
so Super Big Rig is not an entirely
new direction for the company. With
the added production power of
the new facility, the manufacturer
is expected to continue its push in
this category.
At this month's International
Association of Amusement
Parks and Attractions Expo in
Las Vegas, the company unveiled
another family game to the market,
keeping the already extensive
lineup fresh.
"We understand that the family
games are our foundation, and
that's what we're already good
at," says Murawski. "We will
always support and innovate in
this area, but we also like to walk
new avenues."
MECHANICAL MEETS
VIDEO INNOVATION
The new avenues that
Murawski is referring to are
attributed to UNIS' larger scale
products. Last year, UNIS released an
interactive train ride dubbed Bandit
Express. This is a product that is larger
and more complicated than any game
the company has produced to date. In
fact, they considered Bandit Express to
be important enough to allocate most
one of its IAAPA booth space.
On the company's Web site, Bandit
Express is described as innovative
because it takes a traditional train ride
concept and adds a collection of features
to this age-old concept, according to
PLAY METER 53 NOVEMBER 2016
COVER STORY
UNIS has partnered
with Virtuix to
develop a line of
virtual reality games.
Murawski. The ride takes up a sizeable
space of 660 square feet, but allows up
to eight players to enjoy the experience
together and win tickets depending on
their individual performance.
"Bandit Express was another product
where our R&D team took a triedand-true
idea and spun it around with
a goal to innovate," says Murawski.
"The difference between the scale of
innovation that we went for with the
Big Rig and with Bandit is huge. With
Bandit Express, we basically combined
two types of game play and allowed
the players to walk away with tickets."
The two types of game play come
together as a result of merging video
and mechanical targets. There are targets
to shoot both on the monitors and
in the real world. The real world targets,
while lacking the versatility of the
virtual ones, are still spiced up with
occasional smoke effects.
With its larger ride, UNIS hopes to
return the spirit of innovation to the
industry, which used to be at the forefront
of technical novelty in the past.
"Our R&D producers and engineers
really like to take ownership of their
products," says Murawski. "When we
brought Bandit to IAAPA last year
the head producer on the project also
came to help. He was there the whole
time setting up the ride and making
sure that the guests have the best possible
experience.
"I could see the pride in his eyes.
He truly made a great product and he
saw that through observing those who
played it that week."
The game producer was not the
only one getting excited for Bandit
Express. UNIS says that more than
50 units of the ride has sold around
the world to date. The success of
Bandit Express and its idea that innovative
products attract guests have
seemingly given UNIS new ammo
to bring even more new tech to this
year's IAAPA.
“The whole point of virtual reality is
to provide an extremely enveloping
experience so ours needed to be more
immersive than most home VR setups.”
VIRTUAL REALITY
INNOVATION
The company unveiled more than
15 new products at the expo including
UNIS' first licensed game. Among
those was one that "will bring the bar
for innovation to a level that is even
higher than Bandit Express." This new
game entered UNIS into the possibilities
of virtual reality. Look for more
in-depth IAAPA Expo coverage in an
upcoming issue.
"With several consumer headsets
releasing this year, we absolutely knew
that we had to use VR in some way,"
says Murawski. "What we really didn't
want to do is for it to be underwhelming.
"The whole point of virtual reality
is to provide an extremely enveloping
experience so ours needed to
be more immersive than most of the
home VR setups. And that's why we
partnered with Virtuix to make use of
their incredible technology."
There is no doubt that many booths
at this year's IAAPA will boast some
sort of a VR setup. However, the VR
solution provided by UNIS is intended
to be unique in its ability to provide
full-body control of the experience. It
won't just offer VR rollercoaster or
other passive experience.
UNIS is so invested in the VR
amusement movement that they've
created a separate VR department to
advance technology in the market.
"We believe that by providing a full
plug-n-play package that completely
immerses the players in the games,
we provide a much more impactful
and fun version of VR than most people
would be willing to set up in their
homes. We're also very excited for
the innovative component of our VR
setup."
