Shifting Gears: 2016 Promises to be a Busy Year

By now you have heard Happy
New Year a few times. The volunteers of your club have
been hard at work to contribute to that goal. There
are several activities being planned or developed to enhance
your experience with your Porsche. I have been
in other organizations and other car clubs. I have never
seen one to offer so many varied opportunities as the
Maverick Region.
First, of course, is the All Member Party on January
23, 2016, at the Hackberry Creek Country Club. We
have reserved parking for our Porsches (more than last
year). There will be food and beverages and a cash bar.
But most of all it is a great opportunity to meet other
Porsche owners and to find out more information of
our various activities.
For those who want to participate in Driver’s Education
Events, those will start in February and continue
in April and May. We take a break for the summer heat
and start up again in September. However, one idea that
our DE chairman, Chris Tabor, wants to bring forward
is having a four-hour DE (similar to the SCCA Track
Night in America) in the evening during the summer
months. Stay tuned to see if that comes to fruition.
Another exciting event is Club Race. We have two
opportunities for Club Racers to compete and for our
members to volunteer. We are again co-sponsoring
a Club Race and Solo DE at Circuit of the Americas
(COTA) in Austin. The event is scheduled for May 6, 7,
and 8, 2016. If you have never been to COTA, this would
be a great time to experience that excellent track.
In addition, we have several Sunday/Saturday Drives
and a Rally or two in the planning. As you can see, we
offer many ways to enjoy your Porsche.
We have a variety of social events including lunch at
three locations most months. Our monthly after hours
social will resume in February. Stephanie Ho always does
a great job setting those up and arranging for discounts
for us. We are presently brainstorming about Founders’
Day which we have in November. If you have any ideas,
something you liked or did not like, or something else
you would like to see us include in Founders’ Day, please
let me or Tracy Robertson, our chairperson, know.
If you like to show your Porsche, there will be opportunities
for that, also. We hope to again have May at
Mayo’s, so stay tuned about that one. We will definitely
have a show within a show in June at Autos in the Park at
the Cooper Aerobic Center. This is a great venue, with
lots of trees and grass, so you are not baking in the sun
on a concrete surface.

To help provide support for these events, a
new chair position has been created. We now have a
chairman of volunteers. Jim Gallegos has taken on
that role. So if you would like to help but are not sure
where you are needed, you can contact
Jim at volunteers@mavpca.org and he
can connect you with the committee that
could use your talents. As I always say,
YOUR CLUB NEEDS YOU! Volunteer;
you will be glad you did.
Mav of the Month
It never ceases to amaze me that when we need someone
to fill a position, someone steps up. In this case
this individual not only took on a very important and
demanding role, he also started some other activities.
First, he took on the laborious role of editor of this newsletter,
Slipstream. He also
started a Twitter account
for our club and frequently
posts on Facebook. Finally,
he produced a 2016 club
calendar using images from
our photo contest that will
be available for purchase at
the All Member Party.
