Marion Polk Ceramics Shop Groundbreaking 

NEW STUDIO NAMED IN HONOR OF LONGTIME ACV MEMBER 

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in August, the 

community gathered for the groundbreaking 

of the Marion Polk Ceramics Shop. The 

ceremony took place at its future location, in what is 

now being called the “crafting circle,” joining Watkins 

Hobby Shop, housing the woodworking and lapidary 

shops, and the Chriss Building, where artistic painting 

is taught. 

The studio is named in memory of longtime 

ACV member Marion Polk, who participated in 

ceramics for many years. Her life story was reviewed 

at the ceremony, and longtime ACV ceramics 

instructor Laura Putnam shared reminiscences about 

Marion and her constant desire for perfection in 

her creativity. Laura’s fellow instructor, Diane “Dee 

Jay” Johnson, described the benefits of taking part 

in ceramics and other creative pursuits available in 

Dowling Park. 

We are deeply grateful to Carroll and Carlene Polk 

for their generosity in choosing this naming opportunity 

from the 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign 

and for the other individuals that gave toward this 

project as well. 

The new studio will be much more spacious in 

order to allow for more participants and will be a 

fitting tribute to one who enjoyed ceramics so much. 

Carlene and Carroll Polk were all smiles at the 

groundbreaking ceremony for the future Marion 

Polk Ceramics Shop. Marion, Carroll’s mother, was 

an ACV member for 27 years, many of which she 

participated in ceramics. 

Officially breaking ground for the future Marion 

Polk Ceramics Shop were Carroll and Carlene Polk, 

ceramics instructors Laura Putnam and Dee Jay 

Johnson, ACV Board Members Bill Nickerson and 

Ronnie Poole, and ACV President/CEO Craig Carter.

Advent Christian Village Continues to Grow 

TWO MORE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN PROJECTS TAKE SHAPE

and Shirley Brooks Archive Wing have been under 

construction since January. With the exterior almost 

complete, the building is on track to be operational 

in the early part of next year. 

Below: Phase 2 of Taylor Commons broke ground this 

summer. Three more single-story townhomes will be 

built, each with six two-bedroom units. The look and 

layout of each will be very similar to McGranahan 

Place, which was completed in May 2015.

JOHN AND CINDY HARPER MOVE ON TO MINISTER IN NORTH CAROLINA 

This Spring, Minister of 

Pastoral Care John Harper 

announced he accepted a pastoral 

call to the Lees Chapel church in 

Four Oaks, NC. 

The Harpers’ last Sunday at 

The Village Church was May 29. 

That evening, the church celebrated 

John and Cindy’s 22 years of 

service in Dowling Park with a 

heart-warming reception. While 

John held the position of minister 

of pastoral care at The Village 

Church for those years, Cindy held 

several administrative assistant 

positions around campus. 

John was born in Maine and met Cindy there 

when he was 14. During her junior year in high 

school, Cindy’s family moved to New Hampshire 

and John did the same after high school. The couple 

married in 1972. 

John began a career installing floor coverings and 

the Harpers moved to Rochester, NH, and attended 

Emmanuel A.C. Church. It was 

also during this time that John 

began to feel a call to go into the 

ministry. He enrolled in Berkshire 

Christian College in 1977. 

After graduating in 1981, 

John candidated at Riverside 

A.C. Church in Forth Worth, 

Texas. His very first sermon was 

the Easter sermon he preached to 

candidate at Riverside. In July of 

’81, he accepted the call to Texas, 

a “foreign mission field” for this 

New England couple. 

The Harpers spent five years in 

Texas, then in 1986, they moved to 

Panama City, Florida, to minister at the Millville A.C. 

Church. They were in Panama City for eight years. 

In 1993, John and Cindy moved to Dowling Park 

and faithfully became the hands and feet of Christ in 

this community. The Village is already missing this 

wonderful, caring couple, but we are so grateful for 

their time among us.

ACV’s Amazing Music Minister Retires 

THANK YOU, ROSEMARY, FOR YOUR YEARS OF HUMBLE SERVICE 

The role of minister of music is one that goes 

back thousands of years. “For long ago, in the days 

of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the 

musicians and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving 

to God” (Nehemiah 12:46). In fact, David and Asaph 

wrote many of the psalms for the music director, so it 

must be a key position. 

That is certainly true at Advent Christian 

Village. Rosemary Humbles has been an integral 

part of ministry at The Village Church for nearly 43 

years. The community, although saddened by her 

retirement in June, gathered to honor her years of 

dedicated service. 

Jim and Rosemary Humbles moved to the Village 

in 1973 when Jim took over as director of the children’s 

program. Although Rosemary began her career 

as a school teacher, she was also an accomplished 

musician. In fact, her first Sunday in Dowling Park 

(where she had planned to be a stay-at-home mother), 

she was asked to fill in at the organ during the Sunday 

morning service because the organist was away. 

Within the year, Rosemary was asked to lead the 

children’s choir. Soon after that she was working part 

time, using her musical abilities at both the church and 

around the community. When she was first asked to 

lead the adult choir — which consisted of about eight 

members — she turned down the offer. But the request 

kept coming, so she asked a few Village staff members 

to join the choir, and when they agreed, so did she. 

Memories of those early years bring a smile to 

Rosemary’s face. For the very first cantata, people 

stood on stepladders to hold lights for stage lighting. 

Under her direction, the small choir grew and grew. 

During the last Sunday morning service in Bixler 

Chapel before the move into the newly constructed 

sanctuary in 1988, the choir filled the entire platform 

and Pastor Weldon Chambers had to sit on the front 

pew while waiting to preach. The choir has numbered 

from 50–60 members for most of the years since. 

Under Pastor Ron Thomas’s leadership, Rosemary 

was asked to add the role of Minister of Christian 

Education to her responsibilities, making her a fulltime 

employee of the church. She thoughtfully developed 

effective Bible learning opportunities for all ages. An

innovative program developed by Rosemary is the 

Pal Program, which pairs each child with a senior 

adult for prayer support, fun and fellowship. Many 

intergenerational friendships blossomed as a result and 

continued long after the youth graduated from 

high school. 

It is for her role as music director, 

however, that she is best known. That 

is likely due to her outstanding leadership, 

boundless energy, and firm 

commitment to excellence. Through 

her years of service, Rosemary has 

arranged and directed multifaceted 

cantatas incorporating children’s, 

youth and adult choirs, a variety 

of musical instruments, a handbell 

choir, drama and more. In fact, 

the annual Christmas cantata at 

The Village Church often draws 

people from miles around, for a 

total of 1,200–1,500 in attendance 

between the three performances. Even 

after 42 years, she always found a way to 

highlight the message with a different twist 

each year. 

Rosemary purposely included a variety of musical 

styles that would appeal to different generations. 

She effectively demonstrated how rich worship can 

be when you incorporate both the traditional hymns 

of the faith, with their deep theological truths, and 

modern praise music, with its ability to inspire 

worship. Through her hard work and careful attention 

to song choice, the Holy Spirit has given encouragement, 

conviction, strengthening and joy — fostering 

within the congregation a fresh awareness of God; 

giving honor and glory to Him alone. 

So it was with mixed emotions that friends 

from near and far gathered to commemorate not 

her retirement, but Rosemary’s lifetime of service. 

Representatives from ACV, the pastoral staff, the 

Chancel Choir, the children’s choir, the youth, the 

musicians, and the Advent Christian denomination 

spoke of her outstanding service to the Lord. She was 

praised as being perhaps the most influential person 

in shaping the direction of The Village Church, for 

mentoring new pastors in how to most effectively 

minister in this unique community, and for 

shaping young people’s lives through her 

effective training. 

Perhaps the representative from 

the choir summed it up best when 

he said, “Rosemary has a way of 

bringing out the best in each of 

us. She always strives for quality 

because she believes that whatever 

is done for the Lord should 

be done to the best of our ability. 

Yet, her last name is so appropriate 

because she really is very 

humble about all that she does.” 

As a gift from the Chancel 

Choir, Rosemary was given a 

print of an original draft of “The 

Hallelujah Chorus,” handwritten by 

George Friderick Handel in 1742. The 

song is an annual favorite of Rosemary’s. 

Every member of her choir across the years 

has memorized it in order to sing in cantatas. In fact, 

it was the last piece she directed on her final Sunday 

as director, and former choir members were invited to 

join the Chancel Choir in singing under Rosemary’s 

direction one more time. 

What does the future hold for Rosemary? She and 

Jim plan to do some traveling. She’s seen some great 

American landmarks that Jim hasn’t, and she’s looking 

forward to sharing them with him. She says she won’t 

be a stranger, and when they aren’t travelling, she can 

already be found sitting in the congregation. Jim, who 

retired as President/CEO in 2008, has been sharing 

some retirement tips with his wife and she’s enjoying 

the slower pace. 

Thank you, Rosemary, for your years of wholehearted 

service and dedication, not just to ACV, but to 

the Lord and His people. To God be the glory!

Live! at Dowling Park 2016-17 Season 

For 29 years, Advent Christian Village has hosted a variety of great acts in Suwannee 

County, bringing arts and entertainment to a part of the country where most would 

not expect it. The Live! at Dowling Park 2016-17 Artist Series is bringing another 

great mix of entertainers to Dowling Park: seven engaging acts, August through April. 

Gateway City Big Band | Monday, Aug. 29, 2016 

Started in 1993 by the former conductor of Walt Disney’s Top of the World Orchestra, 

Gateway City Big Band continues to echo the sounds of the great big bands of the 1930s 

and 40s, as well as including more modern selections and contemporary arrangements 

for today’s listeners. 

Con Brio String Quartet | Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 

Live! at Dowling Park is pleased to bring back Con Brio, an internationally acclaimed 

string quartet comprised of Valentin Mansurov, Marina Lenau, David Pedraza and 

Aziz Sapaev. Con Brio is prepared to delight with their skill, passion and energy. 

Williamson Branch | Friday, Oct. 14, 2016 

Songs that are mostly new, with age-old themes, Williamson Branch’s music is usually 

bluegrass, sometimes country, often times gospel, but always fresh and exciting. Their 

instrumentation is impressive, their laughter is contagious, their clog dancing is exhilarating, 

and their personalities are sparkling.

America’s Got Talent finalists the Duttons are high-energy entertainers loaded with 

musical talent. With 31 years of experience, and just about as many kids between 

them, they rock the stage with a variety of genres — from bluegrass to contemporary 

rock to country, with comedy and dance as well.

New ARNP Rounds Out ACV Medical Team 

One of the vital services provided at Copeland 

Medical Center is Copeland Clinic. There, outstanding 

medical care is offered to area residents five days a 

week. Board certified family doctor/geriatrician Dr. 

Maria Gonzalez leads the medical team, along with 

two nurse practitioners: Beth Fulford, and newest team 

member, Natalie Gordon. 

Natalie was born on Long Island, NY, but wasn’t 

very old before her family moved to the island of 

Jamaica. The Williamses lived on the Caribbean Sea 

for three years, and then moved back to the US — to 

Florida, the state where Natalie has lived ever since, 

spending her childhood in Miami then moving to West 

Palm Beach during her high school years. 

With the goal of becoming a pharmacist, Natalie 

moved to Tallahassee and attended Florida A&M 

University (FAMU). During that year, however, she 

realized pharmacy didn’t involve a lot of interaction 

with others. She decided to change her major to 

nursing, following in an aunt’s footsteps. She also felt 

very homesick, so she transferred back south to Palm 

Beach State College to finish her prerequisites and then 

to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton to finish 

her undergraduate nursing degree. 

In 2011, Natalie went on her first mission trip — 

to Peru. Working with the medical team, she observed 

how the only doctor — an obstetrician/gynecologist — 

was having to treat patients for many more problems 

Good Samaritan Center recently completed 

renovating every resident’s room. Each room 

received a fresh coat of paint, new flooring, 

and many ACV-furnishings, including beds, 

were replaced. Facility wide, the nursing 

stations in each neighborhood have been 

remodeled and the air conditioning system 

was improved. More enhancements are 

coming, so stay tuned.

inspired her to go back to 

school to earn a nurse practitioner 

degree. 

Natalie returned to 

Florida Atlantic, entered the 

nurse practitioner program, 

and graduated in May 2015. 

Her specialty is “adult 

gerontological,” specializing 

in older adults. From graduating 

with her undergraduate 

degree until earning her NP, 

she had worked as a pediatric 

home health nurse and at 

Good Samaritan Hospital in 

West Palm Beach. 

Natalie didn’t move to 

Dowling Park alone; she 

brought her new husband, 

Natalie Gordon, 

ARNP-C, recently 

joined the medical 

staff at Copeland 

Medical Clinic. She 

specializes in geriatrics 

and has been a perfect 

complement to our 

other medical professionals. 

Edson Gordon, with her. Edson is from Jamaica. He 

was a high school teacher there before moving to the 

States. While on her second mission trip — this one 

to Nicaragua — a fellow mission trip participant told 

her of a friend they had in Jamaica — Edson. Natalie 

and Edson began a correspondence relationship, seeing 

each other on occasion when a trip could be made. 

Their love was able to overcome the distance and the 

two were married in November of 2015. 

Natalie and Edson are living in ACV’s River 

Woods neighborhood and are thoroughly enjoying the 

community. The couple had been planning to move 

to “the country” even before Natalie applied for the 

position here. They’re fans of exercise and take full 

advantage of the Copeland Community Center. Natalie 

also enjoys reading, cooking and traveling. She says 

they love cruises and she hopes to continue to be 

able to go on mission trips each year. She also has an 

interest in learning to sew. 

We’re so glad the Gordons have decided to join 

the big ACV family. Not just for the excellent medical 

care Natalie is providing at the clinic to those who live 

in and around Advent Christian Village, but for the 

Godly, generous, and thankful spirits with which they 

bless all the lives they touch here in Dowling Park. 


CNA Classes Held at ACV a Success 

Administration at RiverOak Technical College 

(Live Oak, Florida) recently added several new 

program options to expand its offerings. Early this 

year, the college renewed its partnership with Advent 

Christian Village in order to offer a unique, five-week 

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) class taught at 

Good Samaritan Center. This isn’t the first class of 

this type to be taught at ACV and we are thrilled to 

be working with RiverOak to once again offer more 

medical education in western Suwannee County. 

Good Samaritan Center’s (GSC) main focus is 

the health, wellbeing and comfort of its residents. 

The success of that goal is dependent upon skilled 

employees who have a heart for compassionate 

care. The administrative staff of GSC reached out 

to RiverOak’s Director Walter Boatright for ideas 

in recruiting and hiring qualified CNA candidates. 

Boatright generously and enthusiastically offered the 

opportunity to have a CNA class taught again on the 

ACV campus. 

The logistics of the class can be compared to a 

paid internship: Individuals taking the CNA class 

are students of RiverOak and also paid employees of 

Advent Christian Village. Once the course requirements 

are complete — including passing a state test 

— each student continues their employment at ACV as 

a Certified Nursing Assistant. 

RiverOak has been instrumental in making this 

program a success by assisting in instructional support, 

marketing and advertising, the application process, 

testing, graduation programs, and overall cheer 

leading. Instructor Brenda O’Steen, a Good Samaritan 

Center employee, has developed a course that meets 

the classroom and clinical requirements set forth by 

the Florida Department of Education’s curriculum 

framework. Students have the opportunity to work 

with GSC residents while completing their clinical 

requirements. It’s an intensive, yet concise program. 

Aug. 26, the fifth class graduated, bringing 

the total number of graduates to 33. Students who 

complete the program are required to commit to 

work at ACV for one year following the successful 

completion of the program. “Our desire,” writes GSC 

Administrator Keri Hilliard, “is that these candidates 

would choose to spend a long and successful career 

serving the residents at Advent Christian Village.” 

RiverOak Technical College and Advent Christian 

Village partnered at the beginning of this 

year to bring a unique, five-week Certified 

Nursing Assistant course to Good Samaritan 

Center. The first graduating class graduated at

New Friends of ACV Really Pop 

The Gainesville Pops! out of central Florida, a 

performing ensemble modeled after the Boston Pops, 

entertained a Dowling Park audience in June. The 

concert was a big hit — an armed forces salute, filling 

the audience members’ imaginations with feelings of 

honor, heroism, chivalry, and sacrifice. 

At the end of the concert, the conductor declared 

they had enjoyed Dowling Park so much, they definitely 

wanted to return. Recently, ACV’s Dick Grillo 

announced that the Pops! will return Dec. 10. 


Advent Christian Village Celebrates 25 Years of Scholarships 

For the 25th year, the Marvin E. Jones Memorial 

Scholarship finalists gathered in April with their loved 

ones in Dowling Park to learn whether they would be 

the recipient of a large college scholarship. “Take a 

deep breath and count to 10,” advised last year’s top 

scholarship winner, Darrah Lane, who explained — 

during a report on how her scholarship had helped her 

during her first year of college — how nervous she had 

been the previous year. 

Advent Christian Village has always been a strong 

supporter of education and is pleased that it can be 

a part of helping students with the costs of college 

education. The annual event awards college scholarships 

to deserving Suwannee High School graduates, 

children of ACV employees, and ACV employees 

furthering their education. The funds are drawn from 

the Marvin E. Jones Educational Trust and the ACV 

Forward Fund. 

At the conclusion of a delicious meal, President/ 

CEO Craig Carter acknowledged the benefactors who 

established the scholarship trusts, making the entire 

evening possible. Marvin E. Jones was a graduate 

of Suwannee High School, our local public high 

school, who became a respected international business 

executive. Dr. and Mrs. Al Lawton established the 

Forward Fund at Advent Christian Village in order to 

assist ACV employees and their children to be better 

able to afford continuing education. 

Forward Fund Trustees Craig Carter and Village 

Church Senior Pastor Tim Setzer awarded Forward 

Fund Scholarships to two ACV employees: April Diaz 

and Randy Lamb. 

Then, scholarships were presented to the children 

of ACV employees from the Marvin E. Jones 

Educational Trust. Receiving scholarships were Blakely 

Burch, Tim Carter, Saige Driver, Jeremiah Harmon, 

Amanda Mabey, Christine Mabey, Brandi Taylor and 

Koryn Williamson-Becker. 

The final awards of the evening were to the 

Marvin E. Jones Educational Trust 2016 Suwannee 

High School finalists. The trustees were pleased to be 

able to award scholarships to each of the seven finalists. 

Receiving a one-time scholarship of $1,000 were 

Cari Blalock, Tessa Ferreira, Kyler Gray and Blake 

Ulmer. The two runners up, each receiving a $3,000 

scholarship to be awarded over two years, were Megan 

Letu and Krunal Shukla. The winner of the four-year 

scholarship, totaling $20,000, was Kaitlyn Rogers. 

Thank You, Dede! 

After 12 years of faithful service in the Social Services 

Department, 11 as director, Dede Stoddard retired in 

August. At a reception in her honor, many Village members 

and staff gathered to celebrate Dede. Individuals who knew 

her from as early as grade school shared stories about Dede 

and her parents, Jack and Jo Stoddard. Dede has been a 

wonderful employee and an excellent leader. She is already 

sorely missed by all who she has blessed through the years, 

and especially by VP Ann Thompson (pictured left with 

Dede), who had the pleasure of being her supervisor. Thank 

you, Dede, for your outstanding service! 


In lieu of flowers ... 

Memorial Gifts Honor the 

Deceased and Help the Living 

You have likely seen the request in an obituary, “In lieu of flowers, please send donations to 

___________.” 

We are always grateful when someone has thought so highly of Advent Christian Village 

that they have included donations to this ministry as part of the plan they set out for the time 

of their death. It is a wonderful choice for friends and loved ones because the impact of such 

gifts lasts much longer than even the most beautiful flower arrangement. They are a fitting 

tribute to someone who has been meaningful to you and they help people who are in need 

through the compassionate ministries of ACV. 

What about you? Is it your desire that donations be made to ACV in the event of your 

death? If so, how do you ensure that your request will be publicized? Tell your loved ones of 

your wishes. Put it in writing and make it part of your personal records. (Your will is not the 

best place to do this, as it may not be reviewed until after the funeral.) File it with any documents 

your family will easily find as they are planning the funeral or memorial service. It’s a 

great way to make sure your loved ones know your wishes even if they feel awkward discussing 

such a painful time with you. Too many people don’t share their wishes, so they may not 

be followed. 

Memorial gifts continue to be a fitting tribute on birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day 

and Father’s Day, or any day when you feel led to honor the memory of a loved one. (And, of 

course, honor gifts are wonderful gifts to celebrate special people during their lifetime.)

Ten Years of Developing Stronger Leaders 

This past Spring, Advent Christian Village held 

a celebration in honor of 10 years of the Camp 

Suwannee Leadership Development Training program. 

A large group of former students as well as current 

and past leaders attended. It was a fun evening full 

of remembrances, congratulations and hope for 

the future. 

The Leadership Training experience at Camp 

Suwannee is a professionally designed program 

employing techniques used by many Fortune 500 

companies all over the country. The focus is on 

creating a positive, energizing experience where young 

people learn — and then hone — personal characteristics 

that help ensure success in school, career, and 

personal relationships for the rest of their lives. 

Each of the adventure weekends teach leadership 

skills such as teamwork, personal strength, 

communication skills, and problem-solving techniques 

through challenging, yet fun activities. Character, 

confidence and spiritual depth blossom in each trainee 

as they participate in the program. 

The Leadership Development program is just one 

example of ACV’s continued ministry to the young. 

A little over 10 years ago, Jim Humbles, who was 

President/CEO of ACV at that time, saw a need to 

develop Christian leadership skills in students because 

of his “concern about our next generation of moral, 

Christian leaders in the local community and around 

the country.” Jim put together a steering committee 

comprised of ACV and community leaders, which 

designed the plan that became the Camp Suwannee 

Leadership Development program. To date, 181 

students have completed the program, and there are 23 

new students on the roster this year. 

A dinner was held in April to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Camp Suwannee Leadership 

Development Training program. To date, 181 students have completed the program. 

Suwannee Gala a Triumph Again! 

Last February, ACV once again held its Suwannee 

Gala for Treasure Seekers event. The event included a silent 

auction and a live auction with lunch and entertainment 

provided to ticket holders at no extra charge. This year, 

165 guests attended the Gala. Before and during the event, 

$1,545 was collected from the “Donations of the Heart,” 

and the grand total made from ticket sales and merchandise 

was $13,018. Proceeds assist campers and support the ministries 

of Camp Suwannee. 


Many of us have a particular past American president 

for whom we have a great deal of respect. One 

Advent Christian Village member Margy DeGeorge 

not only has that, but also some very pleasant presidential 

memories. In the 1980s, she had the privilege 

of working closely with President Ronald Reagan. 

She shared meals with him and met with him, and, 

according to Margy, he was “extremely charming.” 

Margy grew up in Ohio. She attended Ohio State 

University and earned a degree in home economics 

with a child development (child education) minor. 

She ended up in Atlanta, Georgia, as a guidance 

counselor. Eventually, Margy transitioned into public 

information with Georgia Power. 

During this time, Atlanta was being inundated 

with violent crimes. In response, Margy started an 

education program aimed at every grade level (K 

through college) and young adults. The purpose of 

the program was to get kids off the street, where they 

would be safe, and to transition young adults into 

jobs. The participants were taught skills such as how 

to shake hands, personal grooming, and how to write 

a letter — skills not taught in schools, but which are 

important for professional success. Atlanta businesses 

partnered with Georgia Power and hired the young 

adults to give them on-the-job training. Some of these 

temporary workers were hired permanently. 

The program was such a success that 

President Reagan took notice and invited Margy 

to Washington. He wanted to develop a national 

program for disadvantaged youth based on what 

Georgia Power was accomplishing. 

Every six weeks Margy met with President 

Reagan and the lead people from the national companies 

involved (companies such as IBM, Xerox, Ford 

and AT&T). She was the only female in the group 

and the president always made sure to sit beside her. 

“He was a very genuine, compassionate person,” 

remarks Margy. “He was always immaculately 

dressed and he always wore brown.” She goes on to 

say that he had a gorgeous smile, intense eyes, and 

that his sense of humor was “fantastic.” 

It’s not often that you get to see a truly human 

side of such a public figure, but Margy did. For 

instance, according to Margy, most of the lunches 

the committee shared during their meetings were 

“box lunches” which included a slice of cheesecake. 

President Reagan would ask everyone to leave any 

uneaten slices when they left. When everyone had 

left except for him and Margy, they would gather the 

cheesecakes to enjoy between the two of them. She 

adds that President Reagan would place the slices 

in front of Margy and say, “If Nancy walks in, tell 

her these are yours!” The first lady did not allow the 

president to eat cheesecake. 

When the program was up and running, President 

Reagan invited Margy to Washington once more 

to be recognized with a “Summer Jobs Award” in 

the Rose Garden at the White House on May 17, 

1984. She says she didn’t have contact with President 

Reagan after that, but she still has the fond memories 

of meeting a truly extraordinary man. 


Events Enhance Life at 

Good Samaritan Center 

Village administration works hard to make sure 

the lives of those living at Good Samaritan Center 

are just as full as those ACV members who live independently. 

Since the residents of GSC may not be 

able to “get out” as often to participate in campus 

activities, many events are planned at GSC, including 

live concerts. Notably, two talented student choirs 

blessed Good Samaritan Center residents and family 

members, and ACV staff with two programs of 

contemporary Christian choral music and worship 

choruses: the Men’s Chorale from Baptist College 

of Florida in Graceville (top picture) performed in 

April, and the youth choir from Morningside Baptist 

Church in Valdosta, Georgia (bottom picture), came 

in July. Both concerts included testimonies and 

words of encouragement, as well as music.

Each year, ACV employees celebrating work 

milestones in multiples of five (five, 10, 15, etc.) are 

recognized and thanked during a public ceremony 

held twice a year. This is a small token of ACV’s 

appreciation to its many employees who have chosen 

to remain loyal employees at Advent Christian 

Village for a long period of time.

Informed Voters Are Good Voters 

“Who is going to be the next president of the United 

States?” is not the only political decision being decided 

this time of year. School Board members, sherrifs, judges, 

property appraisers, and a host of others are also asking for 

votes in periodic elections. Advent Christian Village knows 

that good voters are informed voters, so two political forums 

were held over the summer and each candidate Dowling Park 

area residents would be voting on was invited to speak. Both 

forums were well attended by both candidates and residents.

What makes ministry possible at Advent Christian Village? It is largely the support of the

that supply the means to carry on ACV’s ministry of compassion. Through their giving, 

they have allowed God to use them as instruments of compassion in Dowling Park, and amazing

One way that we recognize generous 

supporters is through the Village 

Builders’ Guild. Members of the 

Village Builders’ Guild are those whose level of 

cumulative giving to ACV has reached $5,000 

or more. Each year, an appreciation banquet 

is held, where new members are inducted into 

the Guild and those who have reached new 

levels of giving are honored also. Those who 

share of their resources for the ministries of 

ACV truly become the hands that reach out to 

those in need. 

Also honored are new inductees to the 

Perpetual Builders’ Guild. These are individuals 

who have given deferred gifts such as bequests, 

annuities, charitable remainder trusts, life estate 

agreements and life insurance. These gifts can 

be wise investments for the donor, as well as 

helping to provide stability for ACV well into
