A Message from the New Board Chairman 

It’s the “C” in ACV that makes Advent Christian Village 

special! 

As the Board of Directors has the privilege of working with 

the officers and staff to deliver services to the members of Advent 

Christian Village, the measuring stick is always the ACV mission 

statement. We are all committed to that mission of expressing Christ’s 

love by “providing compassionate care and quality comprehensive 

services for senior adults, families with special needs, and children 

in a secure, supportive residential setting and in the surrounding 

communities.” 

It is through the “C” perspective that we see loving and professional 

care provided at Good Samaritan Center and Copeland Medical 

Center; and, safe and secure residences provided to meet the spectrum 

of needs for all Advent Christian Village family members. Social 

activities, craft and hobby facilities, volunteer opportunities, and a 

variety of worship formats are available within the expression of the 

ACV mission. 

Keeping the focus on the “C,” the facilities and properties of ACV continue to be expanded and 

upgraded. The Village Church’s offices and education wing were recently expanded and improved. ACV’s 

south entrance has been upgraded as Taylor Commons has become a reality with the completion of 

Lawrence House, McGranahan Place and Cleo’s Meeting House. Upgrades and modernization continue at 

the Village Square, both in the Village Grocer and in the Village Lodge rooms. And there is more to come. 

We are blessed to have a talented and committed group of officers, managers and staff who, with their 

eye on executing the ACV mission, deliver day-to-day, quality performance. The Board is involved and 

dedicated to the vision for ACV. And, we are thankful to each of you who support Advent Christian Village 

with both your generous financial giving, and your consistent holding up of the ACV mission in prayer.

President’s Report 


The Year in Review 

Dear Friends, 

Advent Christian Village is different from 

communities providing similar services mainly 

because of its mission. Christ’s love is expressed 

as: services are provided to frail senior adults 

regardless of financial standing; members show neighborly 

acts to other members; and loving support is provided to 

children and families. I’ll share a touching example later in 

this message. In the meantime, allow me to share some of the 

happenings at ACV in 2015. 

The year started off strong with another inspirational 

Winter Retreat, with Dr. Marvin McMickle as keynote 

speaker and Rev. Adrian Shepard as Bible teacher. Rev. Don 

Plummer led us in a concert of worship and praise, setting 

the perfect tone for the event. The theme was “Putting Feet 

to Your Faith.” In conjunction, we initiated Good Neighbor 

Day, where the public was invited to ACV to enjoy a free 

meal, meet with area service agencies, and have access to free 

clothing. 

2015 brought significant changes in the appearance of 

the campus as a result of the 100th Anniversary Capital 

Campaign. As you drive through the south entrance, you 

are greeted with a new, inviting neighborhood named Taylor 

Commons, and within it are Lawrence House, McGranahan 

Place, and Cleo’s Meeting House. Likewise, we completed 

the office renovations and classroom expansion at The 

Village Church. In November, we held a service of dedication 

for these projects as we recognized how God has once 

again worked through His people to accomplish great 

things here in Dowling Park. Construction will begin on the 

remaining three buildings in Taylor Commons in early 2016. 

It is exciting that of the 18 apartments scheduled to be built 

within the upcoming phase of the project, a majority have 

already been spoken for. 

Last fall, we symbolically burned the mortgage on the 

Twice Nice Furniture & More shop and processing center. In 

just eight years, the proceeds from this shop have not only 

supported the benevolent ministry, but also paid off the cost 

of constructing the facility. Now, all the income the shop

generates can go toward benevolence and other needs around 

the campus. 

Cumulatively, all ACV volunteer retail operations have 

contributed over $2 million from their sales toward the 

ministries of Advent Christian Village — and they aren’t 

finished yet. In November, they financed a very quick renovation 

at The Village Grocer. The results are remarkable. We 

are so grateful for this means of support provided by volunteerism 

that frees up other resources for ministry. 

One project that has attracted interest within Suwannee 

County is the possibility of a new public library located on 

ACV’s campus. This has been under consideration for the 

past few years, but I am happy to announce that the groundbreaking 

ceremony for the Jo Kennon Dowling Park Public 

Library and Shirley J. Brooks Archive Wing took place on 

Jan. 26 and construction has begun. The library will be a 

great addition to this side of the county, not only benefiting 

ACV members but everyone living in this area. The archive 

wing will be a wonderful place to research, store and display 

ACV’s rich history and is made possible through generous 

supporters of the 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign. 

The auto show has become a popular event. It is a great 

way to bring prospective members to see the community, as 

well as a fun day for classic car enthusiasts from near and 

far. The two shows in 2015 introduced many people to the 

Village. Likewise, the Christmas Carol Tea — a festive high 

tea — was initiated this year and took place at the Village 

Café each Monday in December. The teas received high 

praise and drew people from other areas, as well. 

In 2015, we contracted food service with an outside 

partner, Sodexo. The purpose of the partnership is to provide 

consistency across all dining venues, to improve the quality, 

to increase efficiencies, and to provide greater resources for 

our dining staff. There have been some challenges; however, 

we are seeing progress and I’m confident that we will ultimately 

see this as a great benefit to the community. 

We recently undertook a streamlining of ACV’s corporate 

structure. Since 2004, ACV operated through six limited 

liability companies. As of Jan. 1, 2016, ACV Management 

Services LLC, ACV Family Services LLC, and ACV Confer-

ACV Community Services LLC. The change will not have a 

noticeable impact on our members, however, it is projected 

to increase our efficiencies and enable us to better serve those 

to whom we minister. 

We recognize that one of our most valuable resources is 

a dedicated staff that works each day to accomplish ACV’s 

mission. In order to help new employees to embrace the 

culture of ACV and to give them the information necessary 

to do so, we have updated our new employee orientation 

process. Greater attention is given to explaining ACV’s 

ministry, mission and core values in a way that inspires 

enthusiasm and encourages staff to demonstrate those ideals 

as they work. 

Because we also want to minister to staff in times of 

need, a new Employee Emergency Fund has been initiated. 

This is an effort to provide limited financial help for Village 

workers who have encountered a crisis and need help getting 

back on their feet. One of the beauties of this fund is that it 

is being financed by gifts from other employees. It is great to 

have a staff that pulls together to serve each other in this way. 

Good Samaritan Center (GSC) and Dacier Manor had 

an exciting year last year. As part of ACV’s website redesign, 

special emphasis was placed on the GSC employees who 

have completed the Art of Dementia Care course developed 

by Judy Crager, GSC’s Director of Nursing. These Artists 

of Dementia Care learn how to provide more effective and 

personalized care for those with Alzheimer’s disease and 

other dementias. This has made a real difference in the 

quality of life for these special individuals and their families. 

GSC saw two staffing advances last year: Administrator 

in Training Katrina Fillyaw received her nursing home 

administrator license after completing her training, and is 

now GSC’s Assistant Administrator; and Dr. Laurel Pfeil, a 

licensed geriatrician, is now assisting with admission assessments 

and medical rounds at Good Samaritan Center. And, 

I’m pleased to report that Dacier Manor had a deficiency-free 

survey in 2015. 

The true heart of ACV can be found in the ministry that 

happens across the campus each day. Here is the example 

that I mentioned earlier. It’s a tragic story regarding a senior 

who, due to the death of a loved one, was left all alone, 

unable to make sound decisions. This person had very 

limited means and others were swindling what little they did 

have. The situation was desperate and we were asked if we 

could help. 

Through the Benevolent Fund — because of the support 

of those listed in these pages — we were able to provide a 

safe, clean and comfortable home; services and meals; and 

service coordination that enable that individual to live independently. 

Today, this person has blossomed, and those who 

intervened and contacted us are amazed. The change really 

has been extraordinary. Once again, this community has 

made a powerful difference for someone in need. 

It is only because of the generosity of ACV’s friends that 

many other lives are impacted by similar acts of compassion 

each day, and ministry is able to come first at Advent 

Christian Village. Through their gifts, God is working in 

mighty ways, as we are faithful 

in expressing Christ’s love to 

senior adults, families with 

special needs, and children.

It was a bittersweet moment 

during the November 2015 meetings 

of the Advent Christian Village Board 

of Directors when it was announced 

that Don Churchill would not be 

continuing to serve as Board Chair 

past that term. Don has been a member 

of the Board since 1992, served as Vice 

Chair 2005–2010, and has been its 

Chair since 2010. During his time as 

Chair, many exciting improvements 

have taken place at Advent Christian 

Village. 

The Board elected as its new Chair 

current Board Member John Fenlason. 

John is a retired executive of SAFECO 

Life & Investments and currently lives 

in Newcastle, Wash. 

At the Corporation Meeting in 

November, Craig Carter, President of 

Advent Christian Village, made the 

announcement of Don’s resignation 

and, on behalf of the Board, thanked 

him for his time of leadership. 

Don was presented with a plaque 

in appreciation for “five years of oustanding 

service” with a message entitled, 

“Those Who Serve.” It reads: 

God has chosen a special place 

for each of us to serve, and you have 

chosen to follow His path. You have

the love of God expressed in many

name. Thank you for your willingness 

to give of yourself and be used where 

God has placed you. You have blessed

Don will continue to serve on the 

Board. We thank him for his outstanding 

service as Chair, and we welcome John 

Fenlason to this new position of leadership. 

Remembering Dr. Bob Fillinger 

We were saddened at the passing of 

Board Member Emeritus Dr. Robert Fillinger 

on April 24, 2015. 

Bob grew up in Los Angeles 

and attended the LA Advent 

Christian Church. After high 

school, he attended New 

England School of Theology 

and Gordon Divinity School, 

earning his undergrad and 

graduate degrees, and a PhD 

in adult education from Boston 

University. 

Following college, Bob 

pastored three churches and 

then spent six years in Mexico 

as a missionary. 

After Mexico, Bob became a member of 

the faculty at Gordon-Conwell Theological 

Seminary. He remained there until his retirement 

in 1995. It was during this time that Bob 

became a member of the Board of Directors 

of Advent Christian Village, 

a position he held from 1982 

until 2001, when he was named 

Board Member Emeritus. 

Bob moved to ACV in 

2004. “ACV is a significant 

ministry that is noted for excellence 

beyond the bounds of the 

Advent Christian denomination,” 

Bob remarked. “It is not 

only a well-planned community, 

but it is carried out skillfully 

and with compassion.” 

We are grateful for the time we shared 

with Bob, and we look forward to the Day 

we will see him again.

that are such a vital part of the ministry that happens at ACV. Capital Contributions are gifts for facilities or 

infrastructure that provide the community where ministry happens. Endowment Contributions are gifts that

faithful donors, lives are changed. 

Benevolent Ministry: How are gifts used? 

One of the things that sets ACV apart is that, 

thanks to benevolent gifts, the ministry and services of 

ACV are available to all, not just those with abundant 

resources. Support comes in many forms and serves a 

variety of purposes. 

• Senior adults: Housing, meals, essential services 

and more 

• Families: Assistance in times of crisis, help in 

getting back on their feet 

• Children: Special assistance and programming 

custom designed for their specific needs 

ACV relies upon the generosity of individuals, 

organizations and churches to accomplish its most 

worthwhile mission. Support comes in many forms and 

serves a variety of purposes. 

Direct Giving: All gifts received that are not 

specifically earmarked are used for the Benevolent 

Ministry. 

Endowment Funds: Funds are invested 

conservatively and a portion of the annual income 

is used to help defray the expenses of the benevolent 

ministry, special programs and services, and facility 

upkeep. Named endowments are established with a 

minimum of $10,000 paid over a period of up to 3 

years and the purpose can be chosen by the donor. 

Special Project Funds: Gifts that have been 

earmarked to assist with specific projects in various 

departments across ACV. 

Capital Funds: Such as gifts designated for the 

100th Anniversary Capital Campaign, are specifically 

for the construction and maintenance of ACV facilities. 

Capital funds keep costs down for members because 

facilities are built without debt. 

Ways to Give: 

1. Cash (checks, credit cards, online donations, IRA 

distributions, and gifts of stock). 

2. Non-cash Gifts: Any tangible asset that you wish to 

donate either for use or to sell. 

3. Planned or Deferred Gifts: 

• Outright gifts of valued assets such as real estate 

or personal property. 

• Gifts that return income or other financial 

benefits to the donor in return for the 

contribution (e.g., Charitable Gift Annuities and 

Charitable Remainder Trusts). 

• Gifts payable upon the donor’s death: Life 

insurance, bequests, and life estate agreements.
