Designer’s Thoughts 

Wildwood Way is the first collection in the Digiprint Series by RJR Studio, and RJR’s first line ever 

of digital prints. The line originated from a collage of photographs of real life botanical gardens. The 

fabrics can be fussy cut and pieced to create an array of garden themed quilt projects. The larger scaled 

focal florals can simply be stretched on a canvas and displayed as wall art. The prints can be mixed with 

any cotton screen prints. The studio created a unique selvage end for an artistic touch. 

Lush Landscape (shown left) is the focal of the 

collection. It’s beautiful to use in the large areas of a quilt 

inside blocks and borders. The design repeats 3 times across 

wof. 

Petal Path (shown right) is a unique border 

design that is designed to be fussy cut for borders 

and blocks. You get 4 repeats across wof. 

What is Digital Printing? 

Digital printing is the reproduction of digital images on a physical surface. The dyestuffs do not 

penetrate the fabric as in conventional screen printing. Designs are adhered to the surface of the fabric 

by a heat process. The advantage of digital printing is in the high amounts of detail you can achieve and 

the photographic quality of the designs. Secondly, there are no limitations of screens, so you are not 

limited in color.

1) What makes RJR’s digital prints so unique is the amazing quality produced out of Japan. W e 

decided to print our digital line in Japan, home to the finest print plants in the world, instead of 

in Pakistan and India because quality is most important. Printing in Japan means that our digital 

quality is superb and consistent because of the exceptional expertise of the Japanese 

technicians. Linda visited the actual print plant where the collection is being produced, to see 

the printing process firsthand. 

2) Every piece in the collection works together. The line is designed as a coordinated ensemble. 

Most other competing digital print lines are individual patterns. Having a coordinated collection 

lends itself better to developing exciting kit projects. 

3) The line is extremely versatile. The collection was designed to coordinate with our top-selling 

BASICS including: Cotton Supreme Solids, Handspray, Malam Batiks and Blossom Batiks. We 

have sampled coordinating colors from both Batik ranges. Take the time to show these great 

basics along with the collection to generate re-order business. 

4) We do not have to wait to accumulate yardage for re-orders. We can print on demand. Shops 

can be guaranteed stock!

“Shiny Objects originated from an idea to create a line of metallic prints that were indeed shiny 

objects— those glossy, polished things that entice you, distracting you from things that you should be 

doing. What’s unusual about this line is that it combines three metallics— silver, gold and copper. In 

screen printing you are allowed only one type of metallic per print, so we replicated a shiny look with 

color, tricking the eye into seeing all three metallics in one print. The true metallics throughout the 

range are a mix of silver and gold.” 

“Shiny Objects is a gradated collection. We created 7 specific colorways: Meadow, Coral, Creek, 

Skyflower, Wishing Well, Dahlia, and Daffodil. Within each color grouping, there is a gradual transition 

from one color to the next. Quilters can stay within a colorway, or mix and match to create their own 

colorful blends. We sampled the collection by color grouping.” 

“The Nocturne ombré is one of our favorites. We were able to achieve a subtle gradation of 

color by using motifs to break up the design. The ombré shades from light to dark across wof. We 

created a FREE PDF pattern that features the ombré. It demonstrates how you can achieve radiating 

effects using simple construction, just by cutting wof strips of the ombré.” 

“To demonstrate how the line can be mixed 

and matched, we created a FREE Fat Quarter friendly 

pattern, Shiny Mix (shown right). By simply combining 

16 fat quarters and 2/3 yd of ombré, you can create 

49 different color variations. We feel this project is a 

perfect visual to demonstrate the breadth of the 

collection.” 

“Our intention is make this range an ongoing 

series. Several of the prints have been introduced in 

previous ranges, including Rustic Shimmer and Flurries. 

We incorporated them into this larger collection of 

Shiny Objects. Both prints are great basics for any 

shop. To help you in presenting them, we have 

sampled in the colors we are carrying over in with the 

new Shiny Objects collection.”

Important Notes on Sampling 

The collection contains a total of 38 new pieces 

We sampled in with the collection 2 patterns from previous ranges, Flurries 2792 (from Suite 

Christmas colors 1-8, 11, 21, 22) and Rustic Shimmer 2891(from Oasis colors 1-6) since they 

coordinate with the range. These styles are identified by a * on your headers and on the card. 

The sample card does not have the Ombré 3019. The sample card is arranged by pattern to 

make writing orders easier. 

There are New colors in the Flurries and Rustic Shimmer patterns which are a part of the 

38-piece collection. These styles are— 2792-9 & 10 and 2891-7 & 8. These colors are NOT 

starred as they are part of the New 38-piece collection.

“Urban Artifacts is a collection that is based upon my work as a surface design artist and 

quiltmaker. For many years I have told stories through my work by first dyeing and printing on 

cloth and incorporating these into my quilts. The palette is inspired by my original dyed and 

printed pieces of cloth and then translated into several color stories. What I love about the 

colors in the range is that they play nicely together. When I create cloth imagery I’m after a 

sense of depth and pattern. I love playing with layers and scale. I hope quilters will see the 

possibilities in using these together or combining them in new ways with solids or fabrics from 

their stash!” 

About the Designer 

San Antonio artist Leslie Tucker Jenison is inspired by the textural beauty found in the patterns 

of natural and man-made environments. Leslie loves the tactile experience of working with cloth 

and paper. Using dye, paint, and thread, Leslie creates unique imagery on these surfaces. The 

juxtaposition of the macro to microscopic world is a recurring theme in her work. Long 

fascinated by the historical connection of quilts and the people who make them, she serves on 

the board of the Alliance for American Quilts. Leslie exhibits internationally in galleries and 

juried exhibitions, and teaches a variety of quilt and mixed media workshops.

The line is perfect for a wide variety of projects and accessories like totes, bags and 

much more. 

RJR’s Cotton Supreme Solids work to expend the line even further. Leslie hand selected 

the coordinating solids, which we have sampled along with the collection. Please take 

advantage and generate some order business on solids too!

“My latest line conjures a modern Mediterranean oasis, with rich, hot colors borrowed 

from the sizzling landscape, and the gorgeous pomegranate as the focal centerpiece. The look is 

a mix of traditional and contemporary, and can move between both styles. The line is so 

versatile, perfect for quilts, garments and home decor.” 


The collection will appeal to both modern and vintage aesthetics. 

The possibilities for home décor are endless and plentiful, including pillows, curtains, 

table décor, chair coverings and lampshades.

“My grandmother had a love for Japanese art that inspired me as I grew up. My uncle and his 

wife were missionaries in Japan and my cousins grew up there. Their home town, Kyoto, is the name for 

my collection. I am drawn to the Japanese influence on clothing pattern designs. Asian graphics are a 

strong theme for apparel sewing and quilting because the designs are timeless.” 

“When designing the scale of the prints, I kept in mind both quilters 

and garment sewers. The combinations of scale and prints offer the ability to 

create a ‘capsule’ wardrobe including skirts and jackets, as well as tops and

for fun purses like my Tribeca Tote. We have a great new line of patterns which

“In designing this new release, we focused on achieving the deep lush colors of nature to 

help expand upon our current range— the colors of trees, sky, rocks, soil, and wood. Many pieces in 

the collection will work beautifully in landscape quilting. 

“We employed a variety of batik printing techniques including Mottles, Batik Caps and Hand 

Wax Painting, which is the most unusual technique and a 

rare find in the marketplace. There are three Hand Wax 

Painted designs— Thatch Brush, Waterfall, Fossil and 

River. We’re expecting our new mottle, Geodes, to be a 

favorite among batik lovers because it works like a solid, 

perfect for backgrounds and accents. What’s really nice 

about working with mottles is how they help infuse 

contrast and light into your backgrounds. In January 2017, 

we will be releasing a new range of Geodes in 20 plus 

colors.” 

“We shaded and arranged the collection into five 

color groupings: Naturals, Daffodil, Dahlia, Wisteria and Hummingbird. Although the group is sampled 

by colorway, it’s extremely versatile and can be mixed and matched to create countless combinations. 

We added hints of white in select batiks to give the line a fresh modern feel.” 

“The new sold black batik is dyed in Indonesia. It matches the black we used in our Blossom 

Batiks Starling colorway. It is dyed on the finest quality in batik fabric. Quilters who prefer to only work

“I sat down at the drawing table to re-create the feel of ‘High Meadow Farm’ from my 

childhood— sweet drawings of the barn we played in; the fences we crawled under; the flowers and 

animals we played with, the lovely countryside. I have chosen colors in shades of work wear blue denim, 

burlap and walnut browns, pine and pickle greens along with some malted milk shades (my favorite 

childhood drink).”

Designer Thoughts 

“My newest reproduction fabric line is inspired by a true Civil War Story written in a Pittsburgh 

newspaper by Lieutenant Colonel Dale. The purples and blues in the line represent the wild flowers and 

forget-me-nots that scattered the shallow graves of fallen soldiers. The blues and grays represent the 

colors of the uniforms worn by the soldiers from the North and South during the Civil War. The blacks, 

grays and purples showcased in the range represent the mourning clothes worn by so many widows and 

mothers during and after the Civil War.” 

The Story 

The 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was part of the Army of the 

Potomac’s famous Irish Brigade, fought hard and saved thousands of lives in the Battle of 

Chancellorsville, Virginia April 30-May 6, 1863. Ironically, after a year of fighting elsewhere, the 116th 

marched towards Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia to fight in the May 8-21, 1864 battle that took 

place there. On their journey, May 4th, they made camp near where they had fought exactly a year 

before. What they found there was a surprise. 

‘The Chancellorsville House still lay a mass of unsightly ruins. Battle debris lay scattered on the 

ground. Broken wheels, shattered poles, bursting shells, bones of horses, canteens, were all still visible. 

The shallow graves of the men were discovered and much to the delight of the men, found overgrown 

with wild flowers and forget-me-nots.’ Lieutenant-Colonel Dale was so moved he wrote a letter to the 

Pittsburgh paper of the scene and it was published. ‘I gathered a few flowers as mementoes...the 

battlefield is covered with wild flowers, nearly all of a purple color, as though the blood of our brave 

soldiers had so drenched the soil as to darken the very flowers that grew upon it.’ Dale died May 12, 

1864 leading the charge at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.’

5 ways to run Quicker by the Dozen BOM See Block-of-the-Months section: 

1) Run it as an 8-month Block-of-the-Month, and cut monthly kits. If you space it out over 8 

months it can be a constant revenue stream. Lynette paid attention to producing the easiest kit 

cutting possible. Most blocks require just 2 different fabrics, so shops are just cutting twice and 

in large chunks, making it easier to kit, less cutting, labeling and packaging than most BOM 

patterns. We have provided a shop kit cutting guideline so shops can prepare monthly kits. 

2) Make it the basis of an online club where kit packages are sent out monthly. 

3) Make it a class where people come to the shop and sew for the month. 

4) Make it a club where participants get the BOM, an opportunity to show their projects, make 

new quilting friends, learn new techniques and become better sewers. 

5) Sell it as an individual kit that is put on the shelf and sold as 1 unit.

“I wanted to design something more geared to 

younger boys. I chose monster trucks, yes, those loud, 

obnoxious vehicles that show up at rallies and make us 

cheer for more. Wouldn’t it be fun to present a literal 

interpretation of “Monster Trucks” and show the 

vehicles as actual Monsters?” 

“Monster Trucks works well with pieced quilts, 

appliqué quilts and quick panel quilts. The panel and a 

stripe make for a very quick quilt, and perfect gift item. 

I’ve designed some kid’s storage buckets and backpacks too. It would work great in room decor such as 

curtains and pillows. It would also make some fantastic pajamas.” 


The Panel combined with the Road Runner Border make a quick and easy quilt project for a 

boy’s room. RJR has created a FREE PDF pattern, Cruisin’ (40” x 46”), to promote the collection. 

 

 

 

Truck Blocks is ideal for cutting apart and used in pieced blocks. It can also be bound and quilted 

like a cheater cloth.

There’s no wonder why we have been continuing to grow our solid business. With the 

success of our What Shade Are You Blog Hop now 3 years in running, and 3 successful launches 

of our Color Inspirations Solid-of-the-Month Club, RJR solids have made waves in the 

marketplace. What really sets RJR above the competition, however, is the consistency we offer 

in both color and quality. RJR’s solids are all printed in the same print plant, which enables us to 

closely monitor production. 

In adding new shades to the range, Creative Director, Linda Fitch, carefully organized 

the entire solid range, shading all the colors together to effectively identify redundancy of color 

and find the missing areas that needed filling in. She eliminated like colors first. She then filled in 

where necessary, mostly in the purple, blue and green color families. A lot of the inspiration for 

the new hues came from popular selling colors in the modern marketplace. In addition, Linda 

created a new standard for the entire range to match to, therefore eliminating the potential of 

color variance and to better enable us to maintain color consistency throughout. 


RJR maintains consistency in both quality and color because we manufacture 

everything in 1 print plant. 

The color range is very comprehensive with no duplication in color. 

RJR solids have a soft finish and sheen that quilters like. 

Several of the new shades coordinate well with the Cotton + Steel collections.

Marie Webster Sampler Bouquet 

Marie Daugherty Webster (July 19, 1859 – 1956) was a renowned quilt designer, successful businesswoman, and the author 

of the first American book about quilting, Quilts, Their Story, and How to Make Them, originally published in 1915. Marie 

Webster learned to quilt in 1909, and did all of her needlework in her home. She began her pattern business, Practical 

Patchwork Company, out of her home in 1921 and ran the thriving company successfully for more than 20 years. When 

Marie Webster moved out of this house in 1942, she disbanded the Practical Patchwork Company and ceased to make more 

quilts. Marie Webster was inducted into The Quilters Hall of Fame in 1991. Her residence in Marion, Indiana, United States, the 

Marie Webster House, is now home of The Quilters Hall of Fame and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

Purr-fect Moments Block-of-the-Month (9653-390)

Project House 360 invites you to join a one-of-a-kind calendar quilt extravaganza designed to welcome 

each month of the year. Each purr-fect moment is represented by a different bird, birdhouse and cat 

along with a uniquely pieced border to signifying the month of the year. Quilters can choose to 

embellish the sashing and borders with leaves and vines or choose to showcase their quilting instead. 

This version can be a Keepsake exclusive BOM. Each pattern booklet will contain a Keepsake wall 

calendar to display at home. 

This BOM project is designed to offer something for everyone. Quilters will like this program because of 

its versatility, wide variety of fun fabrics and the unique blocks and block settings. Skill level is 

intermediate. Pattern includes instructions for either pieced or appliqué block borders. Quilters will

A Collaborative Block-of-the-Month by Lynette Jensen 

A Dozen Fabrics • 12 Blocks A Month • Quick 2 Fabric Blocks 

“I was so excited to collaborate with the talented designers from Cotton + Steel in 

creating Quicker by the Dozen. Much like them, my design career and pattern business 

blossomed out of my passion for quilting and the community quilting brings to us all. In 

designing the BOM, I first spoke with the C + S team about what was important to them 

and their market. They wanted to make sure that the project would appeal to beginner 

sewers, and feature simple block construction. I began with several different design 

layouts. It was interesting to see the designs that they gravitated toward. They loved 

the simplicity of the block designs, and the artistic arrangement in Quicker by the 

Dozen, and felt it was the perfect design to launch as their first 

block-of-the-month. Cotton + Steel opted for the vertical row setting because they 

felt it would carry greater appeal to the modern marketplace. I loved it because it 

offered a fun alternative to the more common traditional settings. Quicker by the River Song by Lynette Jensen 

Dozen visually demonstrates how by changing fabrics, traditional 

block-of-the-month designs can also appeal to the modern marketplace. 

Whether you are traditional at heart or consider yourself a modern quilter, this 

BOM says it all, and with three different fabric options for you to choose from— 

River Song, 1930s Everything but the Kitchen Sink and Cotton + Steel fabrics, it’s 

the most versatile yet! 

I called the project ‘Quicker by the Dozen’, because it features a dozen 

fabrics, and you make a dozen of each of the six different block designs. Quicker 

because you don’t have to rethink instructions or assembly and you can chain piece. 

What’s more, each block is made with just 2 fabrics, making cutting and piecing easy. 

The BOM is broken down into 8 months— Months 1-6 featuring the 6 different blocks, 

Month 7 the pieced lattice strips and Month 8 quilt assembly. Quilters will learn a variety 

of techniques including: how to make hourglass blocks, half square triangles, accurate ¼ 

inch seam allowances, pressing techniques, and much more. Instructions are provided for 

making the project in two different quilt sizes, throw and queen. By simply changing the block 

size, you can make a queen size quilt for a bed. Also by enlarging the block size to 9-inches, the 

project becomes even easier to piece. In addition to the BOM, I have designed 6 project extras. These 

projects feature a mix of different collections from RJR and Cotton + Steel. The Free PDF patterns can be 

accessed from the RJR and Cotton + Steel’s websites in January.”

For over 24 years, Lynette Jensen has thoughtfully designed and produced countless 

high quality patterns, traditional fabric designs, and lifestyle books that reflect her distinct 

upscale country style. One of the first pattern designers to partner with a fabric company to 

build a brand and develop a distinctive look, Lynette recognized early on the tremendous 

potential quiltmaking had in social networking. Her biggest accomplishment has been in her 

ability to connect quiltmaking to a lifestyle. Shares Lynette, “My focus has always been on 

making quilts become a part of peoples’ lives. Not only showing how to make quilts, but 

also, how to decorate and live with them.” No other designer in our industry has come close 

to achieving the success that Lynette has enjoyed for over 2 decades. 

Lynette owned and operated a successful pattern company called Thimbleberries. 

First launched in 1987, Thimbleberries grew to be one of the most successful quilt pattern 

companies in quiltmaking, setting the standard for clear, concise pattern instructions and 

diagrams. Thimbleberries became the benchmark for teaching beginner quilters. Lynette’s goal 

was to make every quilter who picked up one of her patterns successful, so that they could 

continue to quilt and love the craft. The name derives from the thimbleberry, a wild berry that 

grows in the northern Great Lakes and produces a tiny red fruit shaped like a thimble. 

Lynette Jensen was the first designer ever to create a Block-of-the-Month Quilt Club 

designed for retail shops to help them to build a continual revenue stream with 

Thimbleberries fabrics and patterns. The Club program, aptly called Thimbleberries Quilt 

Club, captivated the quilting industry, attracting more than 1,000 retail shop members and 

over 300,000 consumer members in the United States alone. Thimbleberries Quilt Club was the perfect vehicle for Lynette to grow her 

very loyal and avid Thimbleberries fan base. It ran for more than 22 years.
