BUT VALIANT FIVES
MISS OUT ON MEDALS
On 29 and 30 October fans in Melbourne were treated to two days of fast, fun netball as
the world’s six best nations competed in the Fast5 Netball World Series.
After a fantastic first game that saw England lose
to New Zealand by just one point 35-36, the Fives
defeated Malawi 43-22 before drawing with South
Africa 29-29 on Day One.
On Day Two the England team took to the court
sporting black armbands, paying their respects to
Tom Reseigh, after the news came through about
the sad loss of the Surrey Storm team manager.
A defeat against Australia 20-26 before a
brilliant win over Jamaica 32-19 set up playoff
match against Malawi and a fierce fight for
third place. The girls put up a battling display
but were ultimately undone in their quest for a
medal, losing 32-35 in a nail-biting match and
having to settle for fourth place.
Australia and New Zealand played
out the final and it was the Silver Ferns
title with an
the Diamonds from
scoring a single goal throughout their Power
Play in the final quarter!
The tournament ended on a high for the Fives
as sharp-shooting, long-bomb-ace Joanne Harten
was named MVP at the closing ceremony.
