With so many new members interested in our driving events . . .<br />

the Maverick Region has decided to offer a basic, pre-season, “how to autocross” school.<br />

At Orientation, students will learn how to Register, Classify and Tech their cars. Professors who have decades of<br />

driving experience will give lectures on how to safely enjoy driving the cars we all love so much. Labs will be given on basic<br />

Autocrossing skills like Cornering, Slaloms, and the Skid Pad. Teaching Assistants will provide you with all the tutoring<br />

you will need to learn these skills.<br />

Lunch will be provided in the School Cafeteria while the Autocross Course is being prepared. A Driver’s<br />

Assembly will get everyone ready to have a fun Driving Class on the short, low-speed autocross. The Deans<br />

of the 356, 911, 912, 914, 924, 928, 944, 968, 986, 993 and 996 Colleges will provide initial Course Walking<br />

instruction for the students by car type. (Non-Porsches will be taught by the Dean of Foreign Car Studies!)<br />

The Teaching Assistants will then provide hands on instruction and demonstration in Course<br />

Walking, Car Handling, Autocrossing and Corner Working. Following the Driving Class a Recess<br />

Period will give the Students, Teaching Assistants and Professors the opportunity to have Fun Runs<br />

to get prepared for the Autocross #1 Finals on Sunday February 18th at Standridge Stadium.<br />

Everyone, faculty included, is encouraged to bring their cars out and have fun.<br />

Fun Run participants must sign the waiver and pass tech inspection before they are allowed on the track.<br />

Please RSVP by <strong>January</strong> 31st . . . but limited on-site Late Registration is allowed.<br />

Class fees are $25 for Members and $30 for non-Members. Free lunch for all Workers and Instructors.<br />

Prez Says:<br />

I hope everyone had safe holidays and a<br />

Happy New Year. Let me start by saying how<br />

excited I am to serve in the office of President. I<br />

had thought about it several times, but never<br />

honestly considered it; I felt I was not "ready"<br />

yet. However, after consulting with friends and<br />

family, I realized I would never be ready, so now<br />

is a good time for me to preside. Long before<br />

our national President was chosen I had to begin choosing people<br />

to assist me and start organizing the scheduling for next year.<br />

I want to continue providing members with the opportunity<br />

to learn. We are going to have more Drivers’ Education events,<br />

Autocross schools, Time Trial instruction, as well as more<br />

instructional Rallies. These concepts are not new. Most of the<br />

changes for the next year were put in place last year. I merely<br />

want to continue to extend our successes.<br />

I also want to provide better locations for our events. We are<br />

planning to have our Club Race at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft.<br />

Worth this year, which should be much closer for the majority of<br />

our members. We are also planning more Autocross events within<br />

the metroplex. We are constantly searching for new locations to<br />

hold local Autocrosses and hopefully even some local time trials<br />

as well. Few venues provide the safety required for large events<br />

that Mineral Wells does, and the ones that do have the space are<br />

quite expensive and not easily cost-justifiable for our events.<br />

My primary reason for wanting to be president was my<br />

passion for the people and the Porsches. And along with that<br />

theme is the feeling that there is always some room for improvement.<br />

I don't want any dramatic changes, but I would like to set some<br />

things in place that might allow us to serve our customers a little<br />

better than we had been.<br />

If anyone has any suggestions on changes they would like to<br />

see, I am all ears. Also, if you know of a good location for an<br />

autocross, please let me know as well. I can be reached as always<br />

via the address information in the front of <strong>Slipstream</strong>.<br />

I look forward to the new year and serving as President!<br />

Well, here it is, my first issue. It has all<br />

the articles, ads and events required. There’s<br />

only one thing left to say, “Whew!”<br />

Now, don’t get me wrong...I am happy to<br />

be editor. I can tell it’s going to be quite a ride!<br />

However, this ride got a rather bumpy start.<br />

The obvious bump was the “hand-over” of<br />

the job right in the middle of the holidays<br />

(standard procedure, I’d guess). Add to that the big speed-bump<br />

of moving into our new house on December 18th and having<br />

most of my time gobbled up with packing, organizing the<br />

move, packing, hiring contractors to do fix-ups, packing, oh,<br />

and have I mentioned yet that I hate packing? (Whoever said<br />

war is hell, must of not have moved much). Then came the<br />

huge pot-hole: my floor-installers. They were coming at 9<br />

a.m.; then they weren’t; then they were coming the next day;<br />

then they couldn’t find the right wood so I had to pick out<br />

another; then they found the original, but didn’t have available<br />

installers; then they did, but called two hours after they were<br />

supposed to start to say everyone was taking off for Christmas.<br />

Bah-humbug.<br />

Fast-forward two weeks: So, here I sit rounding the last<br />

corner on <strong>January</strong>’s <strong>Slipstream</strong> in my pretty new house, with<br />

my pretty new hardwood floors gleaming in the den; George is<br />

at Carlo’s playing video games; baby’s at grandmas. I am so<br />

happy to be done, not just with the move and the floors and<br />

this issue, but with this whole entire bumpy ride. I finally have<br />

some time to myself. I can start planning February’s issue and<br />

get a jump-start on it. Or, I can start un-packing. Ugh.<br />

P.S. The completion of this issue would not have been<br />

possible without the tremendous assistance, support, and<br />

patience provided to me from two wonderful Maverick members,<br />

Wendy Shoffit and Kevin Hardison. Thank you!!<br />

Maverick Minutes<br />

The December 2000 Board meeting was<br />

held on December 2 in Weatherford. Lunch<br />

started at Noon and the meeting began around<br />

12:40.<br />

Teri Davis began with a review of the <strong>2001</strong><br />

events schedule. There will be tech sessions in<br />

May and August.<br />

The club has received verbal confirmation of driving events<br />

dates at Standridge in Carrollton.<br />

The club schedule will be published in future editions of<br />

<strong>Slipstream</strong> and will be available from the MRPCA web site<br />

http://www.pca.org/mav.<br />

James Shoffit discussed some of the new driving venues for<br />

<strong>2001</strong>. There will be 6 events at Standridge, 4 events at Motor<br />

Sports Ranch (MSR) and the possibility of moving one of the<br />

Mineral Wells events to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. James mentioned<br />

that the club will have to share the parking lots at Standridge with<br />

a motorcycle education class.<br />

The club misplaced a $4000 rebate check from PCA National<br />

and will be receiving a replacement check soon.<br />

Charlie mentioned that the "Rules of Conduct" for MR-List<br />

are nearly complete and are being reviewed. Some of these rules<br />

involve establishing how to resolve disputes.<br />

James Shoffit mentioned that there will opportunities in<br />

<strong>2001</strong> to participate in AX Instructor's school for anyone who is<br />

interested.<br />

Since this was the last meeting of the 2000 Board, Charlie<br />

wanted to thank all the members for their support throughout<br />

the year.<br />

Wendy mentioned that she was happy to have served as<br />

Editor for the past two years and will be glad to now have the<br />

chance to do something different in the club.<br />

Nelson Hodges gave a report on the status of the "One Lap of<br />

DFW." Several other DFW car clubs are ready to participate, and<br />

he is looking for anyone who is willing to help.<br />

Have you ever thought you could design an Autocross course? Here's your chance.<br />

We anticipate six Autocrosses for the <strong>2001</strong> season - three at Mineral Wells and three at<br />

Standridge Stadium in Carrollton and YOU can design the course!<br />

Here’s all you do: Download a blank Mineral Wells layout from the web site at:<br />

http://www.pca.org/mav/Autocross/CourseDiagrams.html<br />

and try your hand at course design. There are links to 3 former designs just above the blank one so<br />

that you can get an idea of course size and length. It's a good idea to visualize one section of the<br />

course intuitively leading directly to the next - this helps minimize drivers getting lost on course. We'll<br />

have a layout of the Standridge site by the time you read this article.<br />

Submit as many designs as you like for either Mineral Wells or Standridge. If we use your<br />

design, you get into that AX free! (The only catch is you have to be there to help set it up.) To enter<br />

your design, simply mail the hard copy or a scanned copy of your layout to the address below.<br />

Maverick Region PCA<br />

Driver Education At Motorsport Ranch<br />

February 24-25, <strong>2001</strong><br />

Maverick Region PCA invites you to participate in a PCA Driver Education event at Motorsport Ranch.<br />

Motorsport Ranch www.motorsportranch.com is located in Cresson, Texas on highway 377, about 15 miles<br />

southwest of Fort Worth. The Ranch is a sports car country club with a 1.7 mile 40 foot wide racetrack.<br />

Instructors will be assigned to all beginning and novice drivers. They will be available to intermediate and<br />

advanced drivers for check rides or individual needs. The Instructors will help provide a safe means for you<br />

to explore the handling and performance of your Porsche. All cars must be inspected for track worthiness<br />

(tech) prior to the event. Tech locations, dates, and forms, along with further information will be sent with<br />

your acceptance package but also look for new DE information on the Maverick Region web site<br />

www.pca.org/mav/Luedecke.<br />

PCA Driver Education events are always sold out so do not wait. We will be able to accommodate about<br />

100 cars for the event. Acceptance priority will be: Maverick Region members and all instructors, other PCA<br />

region members, other Porsche drivers, and other cars, in that order, all based upon postmark date within<br />

assigned run group. Expect to have a response (In/Out/Waiting List) by the first week of February. Please note<br />

that if all blanks are not filled in on the application, the application will not be processed. Write “None” if<br />

there is no information, such as PCA#, or experience.<br />

Event registration will open with <strong>January</strong> 10 postmark dates. Earlier postmarks will be processed last. No<br />

postage meters. Event registration for Instructors should also be submitted to the Registrar. Cost is $160 each,<br />

payable to Maverick Region PCA. Applications without payment will not be processed. Sorry, due to limited<br />

availability we are unable to issue refunds. One Application and check Per Entrant even if sharing car!<br />

Tech Session at The Porsche Store<br />

The happy group!<br />

Muffins, donuts, and coffee greeted over 50 people to the tech<br />

session on November 18, 2000. Luckily, breakfast wasn't the only treat<br />

that the Porsche Store had for us. Their expert mechanics on staff<br />

delighted the attendees with their knowledge of the vehicles bearing<br />

our favorite marque. They described in detail the Porsche Stability<br />

Management control unit and the components involved, including<br />

how each of the components function, the PSM modes of operation,<br />

and the benefits and limitations a driver realizes with PSM.<br />

Not only were the knowledgeable mechanics busy that day, the<br />

sales folk had their share to do as well! It was even rumored that a<br />

Maverick member put down a deposit already for his/her very own<br />

Porsche SUV, the Cayenne. Don't ask who it was, though, as opinions<br />

vary widely about this particular controversial vehicle. Each to his/her<br />

own, right?<br />

Wolfgang Dürheimer to Head Development Center<br />

Stuttgart. After over 40 years in the service of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche<br />

AG, Stuttgart, Horst Marchart has decided to retire on March 31, <strong>2001</strong>.<br />

As the Executive Board Member for Research and Development, he had<br />

a major influence on the successful Porsche sports car product range and<br />

thus on the company's financial turnaround after difficult crisis years. It<br />

was under his responsibility that the 993 and 996 versions of the 911<br />

models, and also the Boxster, made their way from the drawing board to the<br />

road. Marchart's youngest "prodigy", the near-series high-performance<br />

Carrera GT sports car study, created much excitement in international<br />

circles only a few weeks ago at the Paris Motor Show. Born in Vienna and<br />

the father of four grown-up children, Horst Marchart will celebrate his<br />

62nd birthday on 28th March <strong>2001</strong>.<br />

At its meeting on <strong>January</strong> 18th <strong>2001</strong> the Supervisory Board will<br />

propose Wolfgang Dürheimer, who is currently 911 model line executive<br />

manager, as Horst Marchart's successor. Dürheimer has been at Porsche<br />

AG since <strong>January</strong> 1999. Previously, he was a member of general management<br />

at the motorcycle division of BMW AG with responsibility for the<br />

research and development department and project management.<br />

Dürheimer was born in 1958 in Martinszell in the Upper Allgäu region<br />

of Germany. He is married and the father of two children.<br />

A "lucky break for Porsche" is how Professor Helmut Sihler,<br />

Chairman of the Stuttgart sports car maker's Supervisory Board,<br />

described Horst Marchart, and praised his work for the company:<br />

"He especially impressed everyone with his comprehensive technical<br />

knowledge as an engineer. This was also true of both his managerial skills<br />

and his ability to get things done, not only by focusing the potential of all<br />

the workforce in Weissach on the project in hand, but also by continually<br />

extending its activities. In all his years and in his positions at the<br />

Company, Horst Marchart has made a considerable contribution<br />

toward making Porsche the epitome of innovation, fascination and<br />

emotion on the international sports car scene. The Supervisory Board,<br />

Executive Board and shareholders would like to express their heartfelt<br />

thanks to him."<br />

The proposal to nominate 42-year-old Wolfgang Dürheimer as the<br />

new Board member responsible for research and development, is for<br />

Sihler further categorical proof of the ongoing generation change at<br />

Porsche: "Young, talented and already highly experienced people will and<br />

must shape the future of our company. Wolfgang Dürheimer has not<br />

only proved his ability in the last few years, but also, as anyone can see,<br />

understands Porsche's product and corporate philosophy. We wish him<br />

good fortune in all his future decisions.”<br />

Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, Chief Executive of Porsche AG, particularly<br />

emphasized Horst Marchart's spirit of cooperation and fairness:<br />

“With his wealth of technical and human experience, but also with his<br />

proverbial Austrian composure, he has positively influenced important<br />

decisions especially at critical moments. For me, Horst Marchart is a<br />

dyed-in-the-wool Porsche personality from whom one can learn a great<br />

deal, regardless of whether one is on the Board or in Weissach.”<br />

Wiedeking also drew attention to the innumerable race victories,<br />

particularly in Le Mans, which carry Marchart's signature to this very day.<br />

Happy Hour at Maguires<br />

November’s Happy Hour was a fun-filled<br />

feast at Maquire’s restaurant off the Tollway in<br />

North Dallas. This was our largest Happy Hour<br />

turnout of the year with over 50 members in<br />

attendance! Several new members came out to<br />

greet everyone and see how much fun our club is.<br />

The atmosphere and food at Maquire’s are first rate and<br />

made our event even more enjoyable. Hopefully we can duplicate<br />

this great time at our next Happy Hour, which will be held at<br />

Soho Food and Jazz on <strong>January</strong> 18th in Addison. Come on out<br />

and have some fun after a hard day’s work!<br />

Maverick Founder’s Day 2000<br />

Every year in November, Maverick Region celebrates the<br />

founding of PCA's Region in North Texas, referred to, as you<br />

might have guessed, as Founder's Day. This year's event took<br />

place on November 11 at the Eastern Hills Country Club in<br />

Garland. Maverick member Jerry DeFeo has some “insider<br />

connections” with Eastern Hills, and was instrumental in getting<br />

the feast set up for us.<br />

And what a feast it was. There were three choices of entree,<br />

plus lots of veggies and side dishes to choose from; enough so<br />

that, even after going back for seconds, we couldn't even finish it<br />

off! Dessert was still waiting for those who had left room for it.<br />

Founder's Day is one of the few events held during the year<br />

when we get a chance to dress up, and you can see what people's<br />

hair looks like BEFORE they put on a helmet. Tuxedos and<br />

evening dresses, although not required, brought a touch of elegance<br />

to the evening.<br />

A traditional part of Founder's Day is that the year-end<br />

trophies and awards are given by the Event Chairpersons. In<br />

addition to the driving event trophies, awarded by Alan Lage<br />

(Time Trial chair) and Fran Ussery (Autocross goddess), special<br />

recognition was given to Lanean Hughes, who, if you don't<br />

know by now, received the Porsche Club of America's coveted<br />

Enthusiast of the Year award. Fran presented Lanean with a gift<br />

certificate to a spa, where she can pamper herself if her<br />

enthusiasm runs low (although there is no evidence that this<br />

is ever going to happen!).<br />

It was also noted that there have only been a handful of<br />

women that have been tapped for Enthusiast of the Year; most<br />

recipients of the national award are men. However, it was uniquely<br />

fitting that Fran presented Lanean with her gift, since Fran was a<br />

previous recipient of the honor.<br />

Outgoing President Charlie Davis also announced his choice<br />

for the Richard Selcer award. As he counted the achievements of<br />

this year's recipient, it became obvious whom his choice was:<br />

<strong>Slipstream</strong> editor Wendy Shoffit, who, among other highlights,<br />

won 2nd place in class in the Parade Newsletter competition last<br />

summer! Wendy is most deserving of the award - congratulations!<br />

There were also door prizes galore (no one, repeat, no one<br />

left empty handed) in addition to a silent auction, the proceeds<br />

from which went to the Hope Shelter. Many thanks to the donors<br />

of the door prizes and auction items!<br />

Finally, the election results were tallied (nope, no recounts<br />

were requested and no higher courts had to become involved)<br />

and the <strong>2001</strong> Executive Board was announced. We hope that it<br />

comes as no surprise (since all but the Treasurer candidates ran<br />

unopposed) that James Shoffit was elected President, Mimi and<br />

Carey Spreen are repeating as Co-Vice Presidents, Andy Mears<br />

will be our Secretary, and Bob Knight will return after a long<br />

absence as Treasurer, defeating Bob Benson for the spot.<br />

If you haven't made it to a Founder's Day, make a point to<br />

come to the next one--you won't be sorry!<br />

Steve’s Tech Corner: Boxster Shifting Mystery<br />

After completing a recent service on a ‘97 Boxster, I took the<br />

car out for a test drive. While on that test drive I noticed a notchy<br />

feeling in the shifter. As I came to a tight corner and downshifted<br />

I heard a crunching metallic noise as the lever resisted the shift.<br />

This concerned me, especially because the customer did not<br />

mention any unusual noises or other problem with the cars shifting.<br />

Once back in the shop I started the search for the mysterious<br />

noise and binding. The easiest access to the shifter<br />

mechanism is through the hole where the ashtray lives. I opened<br />

the ashtray and although I didn’t find any ashes,<br />

there was about five dollars in change. I removed both the ashtray<br />

and the change only to find another layer of change inside the<br />

center console.<br />

Now it all made sense (or is that cents)? The noise and binding<br />

must be from change caught in the shifter. But the<br />

shifter is still a long way from the ashtray, so out came the center<br />

console. After the center console removal it was evident that the<br />

shifter itself would have to be removed to get all of the coins out.<br />

After removing enough change to buy a new Boxster S I put<br />

everything back in place. The cars’ shifting was as smooth as silk.<br />

The question still remained as to how all that change could get<br />

from the ashtray to the inside of the console. So I thought to<br />

myself, “If I were a quarter and wanted to escape the confines of<br />

an ashtray to jam the shifter, what would I do”? After a few<br />

minutes of pondering it became quite clear. With the ashtray in<br />

the closed position, one side is about 15mm lower than the other,<br />

just the right size for the escape of renegade quarters thrown<br />

around under high speed cornering. The moral of this story . . .<br />

It doesn’t make sense to use the ashtray to hold your cents !<br />

Developing Driver’s Class<br />

Developing Driver is an instruction-oriented, noncompetitive<br />

driving class. It is designed especially for drivers<br />

who are interested in learning about car control and dynamics<br />

in a safe, non-threatening format. Qualified Instructors are<br />

assigned to each student to discuss the program, demonstrate<br />

general car dynamics in laymen's terms, and ride with the<br />

students in their cars.<br />

Although Developing Driver classes are held in conjunction<br />

with Maverick Region competitive Autocross and Time Trial<br />

events so as to utilize laid courses and available Instructors,<br />

the Developing Driver class is solely focused on developing<br />

new drivers' enthusiasm and skill. There is no emphasis within<br />

this group on speed or time and there are no sub-class<br />

groupings. All cars and drivers in the Developing Driver class<br />

are considered one class.<br />

Developing Drivers interested in joining a competitive<br />

driving class can do so at any time. Additionally, any<br />

experienced driver who wishes to join the Developing Driver<br />

Class can do so. However, you are only allowed to transfer<br />

between the groups once a year.<br />

Driving Instruction in Competitive Classes<br />

Any competitive driver may request instruction at either<br />

an Autocross or Time Trial event. Qualified Instructors will be<br />

available to ride with you in any run session. However, times<br />

from individual runs with an Instructor in the car will not<br />

count toward season points.<br />

A mandatory ‘pre-tech’ to have your car inspected prior to driving will be at Mayo<br />

Performance (page 17 for Map) from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 14th.<br />

Porsche 911 GT2 Makes World Debut In Detroit<br />

ATLANTA, December 11, 2000. The turbo charged Porsche 911<br />

GT2, the most powerful production Porsche ever offered for sale on<br />

this continent, will make its world debut <strong>January</strong> 8, <strong>2001</strong>, at the North<br />

American International Automobile Show in Detroit. It is poised to<br />

take its place at the top of the current Porsche model range.<br />

Based on the new-generation 911 Turbo that’s already setting<br />

new standards for sportscar performance, the 911 GT2 will make its<br />

mark with more power and lower weight than the new 911 turbo,<br />

plus exclusive design features. It will enter production next year as a<br />

2002 model, although an on-sale date and pricing for the United<br />

States and Canada have not yet been determined.<br />

456-Horsepower Twin-Turbo Engine<br />

The 911 GT2 engine, a modified version of the 3.6-liter twinturbo<br />

six-cylinder 'boxer' engine from the 911 Turbo, produces 456<br />

(SAE) horsepower compared to 415 (SAE) in the 911 Turbo. While<br />

the 911 Turbo comes equipped with all-wheel drive, the 911 GT2 will<br />

use rear-wheel drive for reduced weight. Together, the power increase<br />

and approximately 220-pound weight reduction give the 911 GT2<br />

even more astounding performance than the 911 Turbo. Porsche<br />

projects a 0-60 mph acceleration time of about four seconds and a top<br />

track speed of 196 mph (315 km/h).<br />

Functional Design<br />

Design changes that set the 911 GT2 apart from the 911 Turbo<br />

also add function, including larger front air intakes and a new air<br />

intake ahead of the front hood. In back, the 911 GT2 replaces the<br />

two-piece automatic-deploying spoiler of the 911 Turbo with a new,<br />

one-piece fixed design. The driver can adjust the spoiler profile<br />

manually for desirable aerodynamics.<br />

The Porsche 911 GT2 employs larger wheels and tires than the<br />

911 Turbo. The front alloy wheels measure 18 x 8.5-inch (vs. 18 x 8.0-<br />

inch for the 911 Turbo) and mount 235/40 ZR18 tires (225/40 ZR18<br />

for the 911 Turbo). The rear alloy wheels measure 18 x 12-inch (one<br />

inch wider than on the 911 Turbo) and mount super-wide 315/30<br />

ZR18 tires (295/30 ZR18 for the 911 Turbo).<br />

Standard Ceramic Composite Brakes<br />

The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system,<br />

introduced as an option for the <strong>2001</strong> 911 Turbo, will be standard on<br />

the 2002 911 GT2. The PCCB system is the first ceramic composite<br />

brake disc on a production car. Not only does the PCCB system set<br />

new standards for brake response, fade resistance and service life,<br />

but the ceramic composite discs weigh about 50 percent less than<br />

conventional cast iron discs. The lower weight reduces unsprung<br />

mass and improves suspension response.<br />

The PCCB system provides optimal braking performance even<br />

under extreme conditions, on dry or wet roads. An extremely hard<br />

disc surface plus immunity from salt corrosion, give the PCCB discs<br />

a long service life.<br />

Just the Details: Paint Chip Repair<br />

You'd be hard pressed to find a car on the road that does not have<br />

paint chips and parking lot scratches. While good detailing practices can't<br />

prevent nicks and scratches, repairing them will restore your car's like<br />

new appearance. In this article, I discuss the methods I've used for years<br />

to repair chips and minor scratches. What's Possible... What Isn't.<br />

Touching up small nicks and scratches is well within the skill of most doit-yourself<br />

car enthusiasts. Some nicks can be quickly repaired with a<br />

small dab of touch-up paint, while others will require more time, effort<br />

and skill. It's important to know what you should and shouldn't tackle<br />

based on your knowledge of paint and tools.<br />

By far the easiest colors to repair are black and white. Black and<br />

white are very forgiving on shade variations. Conversely, metallic paints<br />

(those with metal flakes) can be quite difficult to match perfectly.<br />

Before you get started repairing nicks and scratches, you should know<br />

what to expect. Small nicks are easy to repair by filling the nick with paint,<br />

leveling the filled area, and buffing the repair area to blend and restore luster.<br />

Repairing small scratches, from a key or shopping cart, is similar, but<br />

more time consuming. Fixing a ding (a small dent which may or may not<br />

have a nickout of the paint) is not commonly possible by the do-it-yourselfer.<br />

Here are some other things you should know: If you know your car's<br />

factory paint code, you can purchase an exact color match touch-up<br />

paint from your local dealer. If you don't know the factory paint code,<br />

look in your owner's manual for the location of the code, or ask your<br />

dealer. If you have a late model car, chances are you will find a color<br />

match at your local auto parts store.<br />

Use a small artist's paint brush (#2 is ideal) or a round, wooden<br />

toothpick to apply the touch-up paint, not the fat brush included with<br />

the bottle of touch-up paint. Always test the touch-up paint for color<br />

match in an inconspicuous area. The area to be repaired must be perfectly<br />

clean and free of wax, rust and oils. Don't attempt a touch-up if the temperature<br />

is below 60 degrees F.<br />

Here's what you need to properly repair<br />

nicks and scratches:<br />

1. Color matched touch-up paint<br />

2. Automotive or metal primer<br />

3. Citric acid based cleaner like P21S Total Auto Wash<br />

4. Prep solvent (Prepsol) or denatured alcohol<br />

5. Foam swabs (from electronics supply) or pop swabs with<br />

alcohol<br />

6. Meguiar's Unigrit Sanding Block and 600 grit wet & dry sand<br />

paper<br />

7. Medium grit hand rubbing compound<br />

8. #2 Artist's paint brush and round toothpicks (wood)<br />

9. Cotton terrycloth towels<br />

10. New Pencils with unused erasers<br />

11. Rubber cement<br />

12. Plastic cups<br />

13. Blue masking tape (easy release type)<br />

14. Large diameter paper hole punch (hand type)<br />

Preparation Process:<br />

Before applying paint, you must prepare the chip to accept paint.<br />

Although paint may adhere for a while to a chip with rust, dirt or oil,<br />

eventually the repair will fail. The preparation process begins the day<br />

before you repair the paint chips and scratches.<br />

The afternoon before starting your chip repairs, wash your car. After<br />

washing with your normal car wash, spray the areas you plan to repair<br />

with P21S Total Auto Wash, allow to sit for a minute, then scrub well with<br />

your sponge. P21S Total Auto Wash will remove all wax and oil from your<br />

paint. Dry your car thoroughly and put it away for the night.<br />

Make up several sanding pencils. Use a hole punch to punch out a<br />

few dots from the 600 grit wet and dry paper. Apply the sandpaper dots<br />

to the end of your pencil eraser with rubber cement. Let them dry<br />

overnight. You will use the sanding pencils to scuff-up and clean out nicks.<br />

To make a chip ready for touch-up paint, you must make sure it<br />

does not have loose edges. Clean and sand it. I use a toothpick to check<br />

the edges of a chip. If loose or lifted, use the toothpick to knock off the<br />

loose paint. To clean, I like to use denatured alcohol or Prepsol and a<br />

foam swab. Pour a little into a plastic cup and use a foam swab to clean<br />

the chip and surrounding area. Next, use a sanding pencil to clean out the<br />

chip and rough-up the edges. Dip the sanding pencil into a cup of clean<br />

water, dab a few drops of water on the chip, and gently rotate the sanding<br />

pencil over the chip. Keep the area you sand as small as possible. Rotating<br />

the sanding pencil back and forth in your fingers 8-10 times should be<br />

enough to do the job. If the chip has exposed bare metal, or if you can see<br />

rust forming, use the edge of the pencil eraser to remove the rust. When<br />

finished sanding the chip, dry it with a terrycloth towel and clean it again<br />

with Prepsol and a foam swab.<br />

The Touch-Up:<br />

Once the damaged areas are cleaned and prepared, you can begin<br />

the touch-up itself. If a chip exposed bare metal, you must prime the chip<br />

before the color touch-up. After mixing thoroughly, pour or spray a small<br />

amount of your primer into a plastic cup. Next, use a clean toothpick to<br />

apply the primer. I do this by dipping just the tip (2-3 mm) of the toothpick<br />

into the primer. If I get a blob, I wipe it back. Next, I touch the tip of<br />

the toothpick to the center of the chip and allow the paint to flow off of<br />

the toothpick into the chip.<br />

You will be amazed how well the capillary action works. If you prefer,<br />

you can use the #2 artist's brush. Do not allow the primer to overflow<br />

the sides of the chip. Let the primer dry for 2-3 hours. You can speed dry<br />

the primer with a hair dryer after allowing it to air dry for one hour.<br />

Simply wave the hair dryer 3-4 inches over the primered chip for 30-40<br />

seconds. Do not touch the chips with your hands, as the oils from your skin<br />

will prevent the color coat from adhering.<br />

Now, mix your color-matched paint thoroughly and pour a small<br />

amount into a clean plastic cup. As with the primer, use a clean toothpick<br />

or #2 artist's brush to apply the color coat. Touch the toothpick or brush<br />

to the center of the chip and allow capillary action to pull the paint into<br />

the chip. Apply a small dab at a time and allow it to dry for 2-3 hours.You<br />

must repeat this process several times, so don't try to fill the chip in one<br />

pass. Apply several thin layers, and you will get much better results.<br />

The color touch-up process is complete when you have applied<br />

enough coats to slightly overfill the chip onto the roughed up area<br />

surrounding the chip. Once you've filled the chip, allow it to dry for another<br />

24 to 48 hours. The longer the better. I'm often asked if it's necessary to<br />

apply a clear coat over chip repairs. I don't think it's necessary or adds any<br />

noticeable difference. If you get the proper touch-up paint from your<br />

dealer, it will match without using a clearcoat. However, if you're a purist<br />

in pursuit of perfection, substitute a clearcoat for the last 2-3 coats.<br />

Level and Buff:<br />

Until you level or mill the paint repair down to the same plane as the<br />

original paint, all you'll have is an ugly looking blob. This is easily done<br />

using the Meguiar's Unigrit Sanding Block, which helps remove sags,<br />

runs and other isolated defects with surgical precision. Soak it over night<br />

before use as the directions indicate.<br />

To level your paint chips, use your finger to put a small dab of car<br />

shampoo on the chip repair for lubrication. Next, use the Unigrit Sanding<br />

Block to mill the high spot off of the chip repair. I always pull the<br />

sanding block towards me. Never rub it back and forth or in a circle.<br />

When the block dries out, dip it into your bucket of water again. Keep the<br />

area well lubricated with water and shampoo. The sanding block will dull<br />

the paint. Don't fear, as your polish will easily restore the luster. When the<br />

surface looks level, dry it with a clean towel and inspect with your finger<br />

tips. If you can feel a high spot, it needs more work.<br />

The final step is to buff out the repair with a good hand polish. I like<br />

to use Eagle One Scratch Remover (a medium grit compound) followed<br />

by Meguiar's Hand Polish. Apply the compound or polish to a clean<br />

terrycloth towel or applicator pad, rub into the paint area using a short<br />

back and forth motion (not in circles), then buff with a clean terrycloth<br />

towel. Tada! The blemish is gone.<br />

We had a great time at the Hope Shelter and would like<br />

to say “Thank You” to all the Mavericks who donated to our<br />

stocking stuffer and staff gifts. Because of your help, we were able<br />

to give Sally and her family a wonderful Christmas, complete<br />

with tree and trimmings, and lots of gifts under the tree!<br />

Gimmick Rally Workshop<br />

We’ll launch this year’s<br />

rally activities with a rally<br />

workshop and some minirallies.<br />

This year, I plan to reintroduce<br />

the fun of gimmick<br />

rallies.<br />

Class begins promptly at<br />

8:00 a.m. on the 7th floor of<br />

the Speedway Club at Texas Motor Speedway so plan to arrive a few<br />

minutes earlier. A continental breakfast will be provided so you can<br />

fill your tummy while you read your workshop materials, including<br />

a set of simple rules that can be used for all rallies this year.<br />

We’ll spend part of the morning classroom time talking about<br />

basic rally concepts that are useful in all types of rallies. Afterward<br />

we’ll get in our cars for an exercise in doing an odometer check.<br />

Then we’ll let the hair down and just have some fun with a Hare’n<br />

Hound rally that will end in an area where you can choose a restaurant<br />

and have some lunch.<br />

After lunch, you will experience a tulip rally that takes you back to<br />

the classroom where you will then participate in designing and proofing<br />

a rally. After the final exercise, we’ll have a simple rally to dinner.<br />

Dinner will be at the Prairie House Restaurant on Hwy 377 in<br />

Roanoke, where rally workers and other members of Maverick Region<br />

will join the Rally Workshop attendees. The cost for dinner will be<br />

$15 per person and includes a choice of menu items (see the ad for<br />

the Dinner Social)<br />

Cost for the school will be $30 per person, which includes<br />

breakfast and materials. All you need to bring is a wristwatch, a<br />

simple calculator (unless you’re good at doing arithmetic in your<br />

head), and a full tank of gas. If you’re coming solo, we’ll match you<br />

up with a partner.<br />

<strong>January</strong> 17. I’ll need a little time to make final preparations. Call me<br />
