Maverick Minutes Maverick Region board meeting on July 10, 2007… In attendance: James Shoffit, Mark Gluck, Bob Kuykendall, Denny Payne, Lisa Steele, Tracey Gross, Andrea Bell, Bryan Bell, Joel Nannis, Charlie Davis, Teri Davis, Travis Howard, Clay Perrine, Jan Mayo, & Wendy Shoffit. James called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. James reported that Maverick will host the National Winter Board Meeting on Feb 2-3, 2008. No information yet on where or the exact schedule. Eagle’s Canyon has had a setback. The recent rains have damaged the paving and repaving is underway. Three of the turns will be made faster and safer. Bryan Henderson is the Chief Driving Instructor at Eagle’s Canyon. James reported (with help from Joel) that Keith Olcha was working on sponsorship. He then discussed the need for “keeper” trophies for the Selcer Award recipients. Finally, James (again) asked for volunteers for the Addison, Bedford, and Plano lunches. We need members who will attend and be contacts for these events. Wendy gave a lengthy and excellent Parade report. I’ll not report all that, as it will be in the next issue. I WILL report that MR received the Public Service Award for our efforts getting the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House constructed. Jan asked if we want to continue sponsoring the Kid’s Events at Parades. We decided that it has to be the decision of the Parade organizers, as they might have a “paying” sponsor. She also asked for “stuff” for Slipstream. Lisa agreed to write an article about the Father’s Day Picnic. Joel reported we have 1210 members at the moment. He recently sent out 35 renewal letters… no responses yet. Bob reported that he and Dennis had talked with Bob Knight regarding the pending audit of our financial books, who questioned the wisdom of doing this. His belief was that a $1000 audit is not worth much. We discussed this and decided that since most of our current receipts are via PayPal (directly to the bank account) and checks, with very little cash involved, that we would take Bob Knight’s advice. Besides, we trust our treasurer. He also told us that the recent Club Race lost over $10,000 which was due primarily to a 40% drop in Club Racer attendance. Denny, subbing for Christy, said that the logo hats sold well at the recent autocross. Denny, subbing for Denny, asked for more Picture of the Week submissions. Lisa led a discussion of Slipstream rates. It’s been a few years since we’ve bumped them. We have a waiting list of advertisers and our circulation is higher. Production costs continue to rise. Lisa agreed to get with Keith Olcha to devise a consistent policy for advertisers and sponsors regarding Slipstream ads. Ocassionally our major sponsors ask for specific ad locations. Bryan reported that TimeTrial #5 and Autocross #5 were well attended, in spite of the threat of rain. Water donations totaling $65 were given to Hope. The last official TT/AX events will be on September 15-16 at Mineral Wells, then the Charity AX on Oct 14th at TMS. He reported that we had decided to hold the Concours on the same day as the autocross. We have not yet decided on the schedule or the venue for the Concours. There was a minor injury at AX #5 during the worker change so we decided it would be a good thing to purchase a new first aid kit for the Truxster. Mark reported that we did have insurance for the above autocross…and for all other events too. Tracey agreed that the Father’s Day Picnic was good. She has scheduled the Post-Parade Dinner at Saltgrass Steakhouse in Grapevine. She reported that we have an offer to host the Holiday Party in Ft. Worth again, but we hope to have an alternate location near Dallas, as alternating seems to be the norm. Any Dallas County volunteers? Charlie requested that he not be listed as Club Photographer in Slipstream, but rather as the AX/TT Rules Committee Chair. This prompted several other changes to Pg 4. Yokohama Tire Tech Winner by Doug Molny Last month I received a call from our friends and newlyweds Mark and Monda Hanna asking me to join them for a tech session at Discount Tire. I must admit I have not been to a tech session for a couple of years but the mention of a raffle for a set of Yokohama tires was too much to keep me away. Somehow I talked my wife into going with me. Now, Melinda is not one who would normally sit in on a meeting at a tire store with a bunch of guys talking about camber, caster, tire temps, etc. However, I told her that Mark and Monda were going and that I just had a feeling we needed to go. I thought we would hook up for dinner with them after the session. The session went on for a couple of hours and turned out to be very informative with several executives from Yokohama there as well as Colby McGehee, the Texas Rep, who is a knowledgeable young man who could answer our questions about racing and tires. They asked us to write our names down on paper and threw them into a hat for door prizes. I won a coffee mug and Melinda won something else small. Then all the names were placed back into the hat for the grand prize and Melinda's name was pulled out again. Man, was I lucky my wife did not need tires for her Lexus! She was happy to pass the gift to me for my 1995 993 Cab, which was desperate for new tires. Discount Tire was very nice to accommodate me and I now have a set of Yokohamas Avain Sports. Believe me they are great tires - excellent dry and wet traction. This included mounting, balancing, and the guys at the store even cleaned the wheels! This has to be the best gift I could have imagined and I, of course, gave my friend Mark the coffee mug. I could see in his eyes he wanted the tires and I hope next time he wins. Yokohama also sent me a Porsche Factory DVD of the 356 being built from scratch, which must be from the very early 1950's. A very cool film. I even thought I spotted a 912 somewhere in the film (maybe a prototype). I will have some copies made. By the way, I need to thank Mark Hanna for calling me and inviting me to the tech session. Thanks to Discount Tire for the set of tires and for sponsoring a great event. Discount Tire Manager, Todd, congratulating Doug Maverick Minutes Cont. there were two “meeings” in the current calendar. She reported that the rally school had eight cars, made $20.40 profit, and produced a winner at Parade. Travis thanked James for completing the autocross results. He also complemented the course designer of the last autocross (Joel) who did it with only five pylons! Clay attended because he has agreed to be the 2008 Autocross Chair. He had some suggestions for changes to the rules. Charlie explained that as the Autocross Chair he will automatically be on the Rules Committee. One of his key points was increasing the number of runs above 5. Clay will start scheduling AX events as soon as the track events are scheduled. James adjourned the meeting at 9:12 PM. 9
