Maverick Roundup

Maverick Roundup 2010 By Tom Froehlich Friday, August 6, 2010, was a typical hot Texas August day with afternoon temperatures above 100 degrees. As a dedicated group of 39 Porschephiles gathered in the late afternoon, storm clouds gathered over Dallas. We wondered if a summer thunderstorm would cool us off or just leave us hotter with the post rain humidity. But the question never got an answer as the rain missed our gathering in Grapevine, TX and moved away as the evening progressed. So the fun was never dampened as our gathering started Friday evening during Happy Hour at Love and War in Texas. Conversation, stories, meeting of new friends and a great meal were had by all on the first evening of our multi-event Maverick weekend. Saturday morning dawned as expected, warm and cloudless. The group began to gather shortly after 7 a.m. at the old train station in historic downtown Grapevine. Ultimately we had over 15 beautiful Porsches on display at the Show and Shine. Ballots were cast by club members and passers-by for their favorite car and later that evening we found out that Alan and Linda Bambina’s 1994 Speedster was chosen as Best in Photos by Tom Froehlich Show, earning them a wonderful bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape to celebrate their victory. As the heat built Saturday afternoon, we all retreated to the air-conditioned confines of the Grapevine Opry to see the return of Elvis. A superb Elvis tribute artist who helped to prove that Elvis is still alive and well, even if not in his original body, treated us to a fabulous concert. BJ Henson sang along and it was rumored that she knew all but about half a dozen of the words to all the songs sung, including a gospel song Elvis loved and performed. After the show, we drove a short mile or so to La Buena Vida Winery for a tasting. We sampled some of Texas’ best wines over the next couple of hours and spent more time talking about cars, and the meaning of life. We tried 2 whites and 2 reds and for me the clear favorite was the Becker Claret out of Fredericksburg. But I suspect that if you asked, others might give you a different opinion. When 5 p.m. rolled around we moved on to the Silver Fox Restaurant where our esteemed president had arranged for Happy Hour. We were feted with a fabulous table of hors d’oeuvres by a very gracious staff and spent another hour socializing and enjoying each other’s company. We then returned to the hotel where John & Madhu enjoying a cold beer... Cheers! 10

we had a catered dinner of fabulous Mexican food from Esparza’s and the results of the earlier voting where Frank Briggs announced the Show and Shine winners. Following this, our esteemed president conducted a team Tech quiz where the format was a single elimination oral exam, with each team of 4 or 5 fielding a single question in succession. Answer it correctly and your team stayed in for the next round, but answer it wrong and you were out! The Master of Ceremonies repeated chant throughout was, “It ain’t fair, but I don’t care.” It proved to be a spirited competition, won by “Team Testosterone,” the only team with 4 guys, who for their effort and knowledge each got a T shirt, which was probably a fitting reward for the competition. Following this, we had our door prize drawing for fabulous prizes that Tom Minella had obtained for the event and everyone went home a winner. Sunday morning we gathered around 8 a.m. for the instructions prior to our tour, ably led by our newlyweds, John and BJ Harvey. After getting instructions and directions and signing the waivers, the group lined up and departed shortly before 8:30 a.m. The tour went smoothly until Alan and Linda Bambina blew a Three sweet ladies out to have a little fun! tire in their award winning Speedster and had to put on their lightweight spare. But this allowed them to finish the drive at RAC Performance in Carrolton where Hans and his staff treated us all to a great tour of the facility, lunch and a very interesting tech talk by their man who does all their work restoring interiors. I think I can safely say that it was a side of cars that was BJ, John, Linda & Alan at the hotel where it was all fun and games. fascinating to everyone, but something none of us knew much about. By early Sunday afternoon, we all dispersed to return to our regular lives after a great weekend of fun and camaraderie. Everyone who attended expressed their high level of enjoyment and all are looking forward to next year. The present plans for 2011 are to gather at the Cliffs at Possum Kingdom where the Minellas have a condo and our activities will spread out from there. So make your plans to join us next year, I guarantee you will have fun! A friendly conversation while enjoying each other. Susan, Judy, Hans & Mike having a look at Jackie’s new GT3 RS... I would like to thank my wife, Susan, for chairing the event and her extremely energetic and effective co-chairs, BJ and John Harvey and Barb and Tom Minella. Without their energy and dedication, this event could never have occurred and we would all have missed an unbelievable weekend fun! Having a look around RAC with Hans, a new red Boxster Spyder and Mike Brodigan , John & BJ Harvey learning a new trade. of September 11
