I reflect on 

some of the past 

year’s events 

and accomplishments, 

and look forward to 

another growth year in 2013. 

Events and accomplishments: 

• Outstanding participation 

at our Sunday Drives, 

DEs, Autocrosses, Time 

Trials, and Club Race 

• A new training program 

for our DE Instructors 

• Great attendance at our 

monthly “Happy Hours” 

• A FABULOUS “50 Cars for 50 

Years” event at TMS (for me, 

the highlight of the year so far) 

• A solid bank account balance 

• Our membership growth 

to over 2,200 members in 

the Maverick Region! 

Looking forward: 

• More out-of-the-box thinking, 

planning, and execution 

for our Autocross, Time 

Trial and DE programs 

• New destinations for our 

Sunday Drives (yes, I know, 

it’s not just the destination, 

it’s the journey!)

most of the past and 

future is focused on 

membership: gaining 

new members AND 

retaining existing

continue to strive to 

bring value to our

and will outnumber 

our new member 

acquisitions. EVERY 

member has that 

responsibility, so I ask 

you to help us continue to grow by 

welcoming new members, helping 

existing members, and by suggesting 

and supporting activities that 

more of our members will enjoy.

Editor, I wanted to thank a few people 

who made it possible for me to 

put this newsletter out each month. 

Christy Payne - You have no doubt 

noticed the quarter-page and 

half-page ads for Maverick events 

that populate each and every issue. 

Those ads have been produced 

by Christy Payne - yes, our Social 

Chair also has an artistic flair! 

Christy’s creative ads have given 

Slipstream a professional look that 

we can be proud of. Unfortunately, 

Christy will not be able to continue 

producing ads for us, so we are 

looking for a replacement for her.

Richard Bradley - the Editor of 

Slipstream for 2009 through 2011, 

did the Editor thing, as well as 

solicit articles, by himself, and now 

that I have sat in his seat for this 

past year, I don’t know how he 

found the time to do it all. Like 

many of us, I have a full-time job 

in addition to this one, and so 

did he, but he still managed not 

only to get the newsletter done 

every month, but he won National 

Newsletter awards each year he 

was Editor. This includes the Betty 

Jo Turner Award for Newsletter 

Excellence, a new National award 

which was inaugurated at this year’s 

Porsche Parade. Richard’s work, as 

well as the work of the editors that 

preceded him (I’m looking at you, 

Jan), provided me with a proven 

platform on which to continue to 

build our newsletter. But it also 

gave me really big shoes to fill, and 

unfortunately I have small feet! 

Linda Bambina - My biggest thanks 

of all go to Linda, who wears, 

among other Maverick Region 

hats, that of Content Solicitor, 

meaning that she beats the bushes 

to round up folks to write articles 

and/or take photos of upcoming 

events. Without Linda’s help I 

would be spending a lot of time on 

the phone begging for articles!

Maverick Minutes

Our November 

Board 

meeting started 

at 7:15pm with 

a spirited shout 

out “Freebird” 

(I think that was 

me) and a “Raosing” 

table drumming stint to 

the opening chorus of ‘We Will 

Rock You’ (also me - must be my 

inner child!) Who knows what 

types of fun we’ll have at our 

next meeting, so come join us! 

President John Hamilton welcomed 

those in attendance with 

some great news: Maverick Region 

membership continues to increase! 

Our total membership now exceeds 

2200, and has grown every month 

for over 18 months. Kudos to all 

involved in “driving” these results. 

Someone mentioned the mantra 

of our region, “It’s not the cars, It’s 

the people” and everyone seemed 

to agree on this point as to why 

people enjoy being members of the 

Maverick Region. John also mentioned 

that setting a new goal of 

achieving an increase of 300 members 

to 2500 should be considered. 

To support his point, John then 

led an open discussion about 

how we can add value to the 

membership experience to retain 

existing and recruit new members. 

He described a concept idea of 

updating our regional website to 

highlight the various incentives 

offered by our sponsors so as to 

communicate the value of membership 

in our region. Stay tuned 

for more information on this. 

Lastly, John asked about our 

recent Board meeting attendance 

trends which have been lower for 

the past few meetings. If you have 

any feedback about this please contact 

John at president@mavpca.org. 

Next, having calmed down a 

bit from my opening number, 

I noted that our Executive 

Council election is underway. 

Thanks to all who helped on the 

Nomination Committee to produce 

our 2013 Executive Council 

nominees. I will announce the 

results of this election at Founders’ 

Day on December 1 and in 

the next edition of Slipstream. 

Regarding our social activities, our 

region is seeking a Social chair to 

help plan and execute programs 

for the region. We have some great 

programs planned already in 2013 

for you. Mark your calendars to 

attend the All Member party on 

January 26 at the Heritage Clubhouse 

in Ft Worth. Additional 

information is forthcoming on this. 

Driving right along (the phrase 

still works - why change?), Sunday 

Drive Chair John Harvey mentioned 

that the recent driving tour 

had 54 cars and 88 people attend, 

a great turnout. Of course, the tour 

to the Wiseman Chocolate Studio 

might have had something to do 

with this. Also, he and the driving 

tours committee are reviewing the 

feasibility of downloading the maps 

to your smartphone for use during 

the drive. Lastly, the committee is 

busy working on their next drive, 

the “Tryptophan Trail Tour”, on 

November 18. The drive will head 

north from Frisco to the Lake Texoma 

area. Should be a lot of fun! 

Advertising Manager Pat Friend 

announced two new Slipstream 

advertisers, DeBoulle Jewelers 

and Merrill Lynch. Welcome! 

Time Trial Chair Travis Howard 

had the following updates. The 

October Time Trial at Motorsport 

Ranch had 48 drivers. The event 

was profitable for the region. He 

also announced, somewhat sardonically, 

“…drivers got in some great 

runs at the toilet bowl there.” (Full 

disclosure: “Toilet Bowl” is one of 

the turn sequences at Motorsport 

Ranch.) He also mentioned that 

the next Time Trial and Autocross 

event is on December 8-9. Lastly, 

he is evaluating an alternate site 

in the SE area of the Metroplex. 

Travis, we look forward to your 

updates about the above! 

Autocross Chair Al Silva noted 

that the Charity Autocross will 

be held on Sunday, December 

2 at the Texas Motor Speedway 

Bus Lot, between Victory Circle 

and Hwy 114 on the south side 

of the Speedway. Cost is $45 and 

proceeds support our charity, the 

Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. 

Treasurer Jim Falgout reported 

that our financial position is doing 

better; however, there will be 

some outflows to cover expenses 

associated with our upcoming 

programs. An opportunity exists 

to continue to increase our communication 

and planning efforts 

within the region to drive revenue 

and perceived value for our region. 

Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit 

noted that the recent Maverick 

Region Club Race was profitable 

and a success. Looks like 67 racers 

were able to participate. Wendy 

also mentioned that the Holiday 

Party on November 4 had a total of 

56 attendees, and that we utilized 

a credit card reader to expedite 

purchase processing for the Silent 

Auction. Congratulations to all 

of you involved in the planning 

and execution of these events.

to help out with regards

to PR activities by spotlighting people and sponsors 

of interest for our region. If you have an idea

updates and reminders. The first is to make 

sure articles are submitted on time so that the 

magazine can be delivered to you more quickly. 

Carey – thanks for doing this. Carey also suggested 

updating our website calendar and the 

Executive Council information for the next issue. 

Happy Hour Chair Mike Farrar mentioned that the 

November 15 Happy Hour will be at JR’s Grille in 

Colleyville, and the December 20 Happy Hour will be 

at Ruggeri’s Italian Kitchen in Dallas. Please check the 

Maverick Region website for additional information 

about these and other great events in our region.

Sunday Drive: Chocolate Tour to Hico

Walk into a 

crowded 

room 

and shout “CHOC- 

OLATE”. All heads 

turn - most of 

them smiling. 

That same word, 

chocolate, appeared to have a 

similar effect on your fellow PCA 

members. We had a near-record 

52 Porsches (and one Volvo) turn 

out for our PCA Sunday drive to 

Hico, Texas (pull out your atlas, 

boys and girls). Or, for today’s 

reality: google.com/maps. 

Our destination was Wiseman 

Chocolates in Hico, Texas. Kevin 

Wenzel is the oldest (or second 

oldest - he wasn’t quite 

sure) chocolatier in 

Texas. Gareth Maurice 

and I had the pleasure 

of visiting with Kevin, 

the owner and proprietor, 

for half an hour 

on our pre-drive the 

previous weekend. He 

was gracious and an 

educator – filling us in 

on chocolate history 

and how his craft was 

unique from the mass 

produced products that we all know 

(and routinely buy) from the grocery 

stores. He was excited to know

our pre-drive showed construction 

madness and a dozen 

(long) stoplights. 

South of Weatherford 

things got much 

more interesting. We 

took Farm-to-Market 

51 (dig out that map 

again), a FABULOUS 

road for Porsches. 

Several of my fellow 

PCA members told 

me they’d toured that 

road on motorcycles 

– they had grins from ear to 

ear. Yes, it was a blast: twists and 

turns, one after the other. 

It turned hilly. Road visibility 

dropped to double-digit yardage 

in places with all sorts of perfectly 

cambered corners. Then, 

we would top a rise and see 30 

miles before dropping back down 

into the Texas scrub. Great fun. 

Arriving in the hot, dusty town 

of Hico was like visiting the Old 

West with its classic storefronts.

By the time 

you read 

this, our 

50th Anniversary 

Year will 

have come to 

an end. ‘Twas a 

grand ole time, 

wasn’t it? While most Regions have 

celebrated their Golden Anniversary 

with a single Giant Gala 

or banquet, we have had SEVEN 

special occasions, with a focus on 

events from our unique history and 

the people who helped make it all 

happen over those five decades. 

Last month in Slipstream there 

was a great panorama shot of 

many of our Past Presidents; it 

took up two pages. I wish there 

was a way to show you all faces or 

even just the names that make up 

the proverbial “rest of the story” 

behind this memorable past year. 

In a way it would look like the 

credits at the end of a movie! Lists 

of responsibilites that you never 

would have thought were necessary 

to get the job done! So many 

details, so much minutiae! And the 

majority of it was handled by - you 

guessed it: Christy Payne, Lisa 

Steele, and Wendy Shoffit . . . again. 

Oh, I was there with frenetic 

energy and lots and lots of ideas 

that turned into real events, 

but the planners and the doers? 

Christy and Lisa and Wendy. 

As I “emoted” in Lisa’s “Video 

Tribute to Maverick Region” (first 

shown at the Holiday Party), I’ve 

noted the SAME pattern/blueprint 

that has made us a uniquely loyal and 

strong Region: The Women of Maverick. 

I’m talking about women who 

took on various volunteer jobs and 

every single Executive Board position 

year after year after year. Like 

little Energizer Bunnies, they kept 

going and going and going. From 

the 70s thru the 90s (and some 

into the current millennium!): 

Teri Davis, Joan Gibbs, Sharron 

Dawson, Fran Ussery, Jan (Thompson) 

Mayo, Yours Truly, Doris 

(Mitchell) Casey, Myra Sutton, 

Taxi Breithaupt, Julia Underwood, 

Rose Gohlke, Carolyn King, and 

the famous (infamous!) Lanean 

Hughes, who stopped only when 

she was literally taken from us after 

two short months in the hospital. 

Wendy Shoffit, Jan Mayo and 

Mimi Spreen stepped in to help 

Lanean as the Region started 

the new century, gaining momentum 

for our 2004 Ft. Worth 

Parade with Jan at the helm -- this 

time supported by almost 1,000 

members, twice as many as we 

had for the ’87 DFW Parade. 

As I look at the year 2000 time 

frame found on our own Mav 

website, I see the names Jan Mayo, 

Lisa Steele, Christy Payne, and 

Wendy Shoffit again and again, in 

key club roles, winning awards, and 

in countless ways NOT specifically 

mentioned on the Timeline, but 

there between the lines and lines 

of club events, decidedly making 

a difference year after year. 

Thank you, Women of Maverick, 

for being the Super Glue that has 

helped hold the “people” side of 

our cars & people equation together!

The Studio is where imagined and 

engineered chocolate recipes come 

to being, as well as full time production 

under Justin’s eye. The retail 

shop in the Parsonage is hundreds 

of chocolate truffles blocked by 

thin glass. A credit card frees 

them from being held hostage 

and moves it into YOUR gift 

box for the trip back to DFW. 

Don Sebert is our guest contributor 

with insight into the 

actual studio tour in Hico. He 

paid hard cash money for the 

privilege to see, first hand, how 

fine chocolates are crafted. 

Some of you may recognize 

Don’s name. It is rumored that 

he was runner up to be “The 

Most Interesting Man in the 

World” (http://en.wikipedia. 

org/wiki/The_Most_Interesting_ 

Man_in_the_World). Here is Don’s 

description of the factory tour: 

“The anxious group that entered 

the Wiseman Chocolate Factory 

inner sanctum found a chocolate 

treat, literally. After kicking the 

dust off our spurs and donning 

sanitary food caps, we proceeded 

inside and gathered around a

Maverick Region Club Race and DE: Trick or Treat!

Halloween 

was early 

this year. 

The racers showed 

up dressed in all 

different colors 

of cars - some 

adorned with 

stripes and numbers, others with 

checkered flags. One had a snow 

leopard on its rear; another was 

painted a meaty pink 

and labeled as cuts of 

pork; still another was 

dressed up like a “Dukes 

of Hazzard”-style General 

Lee. One of the Porsche 

Cup cars was done up 

in the Dallas Mavericks 

basketball colors, complete 

with logo. There 

was a Spec Boxster that 

looked like it had rust spots 

and had just been pulled out of the 

jungle after sitting for years. Another 

car had fancy clocks on 

its hood and doors. Some 

were scarier than others, 

but all were fast, and most 

of them were very loud. 

There were more than a 

few tricks going on. Apparently 

the racing line does 

not end where the pavement 

ends. When the dust 

was flying, sometimes it was

just somebody 

racing a bit 

“wide.” More 

than a few racers 

missed one 

corner, and cut 

the next one to 

get back on the 

track. Another 

trick was when 

the racers at the 

. . . checkers . . . 

back of the pack 

did not catch

lap, so the 

pace car 

took them 

around 

a second 

time. 

But 

not all 

tricks worked out well. At

Jim Falgout has two passions: 

cars, and helping business 

owners and individuals with accounting 

and tax issues. He is the 

proud owner of a 1992 Porsche 

968 Cabriolet and an accounting 

firm with six employees. 

Jim was first attracted to Porsches 

in the sixties when he was member 

of a Porsche/VW Club in 

Lafayette, LA. He owned a 1958 

Karman Ghia which he used 

to compete in autocrosses. He 

later owned a 1974 914 2.0. 

He started his firm in 1986 from 

scratch. Over the years his firm has 

grown through referrals and three 

acquisitions. Today he has offices 

in Richardson and McKinney. 

Jim and his staff can help individuals 

get started in business, 

and help established businesses 

with services such as bookkeeping, 

payroll, and consulting. If a business 

needs financial statements, 

they can provide those. Two of 

his employees are certified Quick 

Books Pro Advisors, and one of 

those employees is also a CPA. 

His firm can prepare any federal 

or state income tax return 

an individual or business might 

need. Jim really enjoys assisting 

individuals and businesses with 

tax planning. He finds it very 

satisfying to help individuals and 

businesses plan strategies to minimize 

their income tax exposure. 

Frequently, individuals who have 

received a notice from the Internal 

Revenue Service are referred to 

Jim. He has conducted many successful 

negotiations with the IRS. 

Jim joined the Maverick Region 

in 2008 after purchasing his 968. 

In August of that year, he received 

an email blast indicating that the 

officers of the region were not 

running for re-election. Since he 

had experience serving on notfor-profit 

boards and had several 

not-for-profit clients, he decided 

to run for treasurer for 2009. 

He continues to hold that position 

and is proud to work with all the 

individuals who serve the Maverick 

Region with such passion and 

professionalism. Jim feels this is 

what makes the Region the excellent 

organization it is. As has been 

said, “It’s not just the cars; it’s the 

people.”

Cliff’s Ramblings: Visitors from the East

From time 

to time, 

Porsche 

sends people from 

Germany to tour 

around over here 

and get a ground 

level view of how 

things are going 

in the workshop environment. The 

folks that they send over have no 

desire to visit the sales department 

or visit with upper managers at 

dealer level. They send gear-heads 

over here to talk to gear-heads that 

work here. It is interesting. Nearly 

all I have met over my 40 years of 

doing this are engineers. Cool folks. 

In almost every case I have been 

involved in, most have never traveled 

to the US before. And they always 

seem to resonate the same expectations 

about coming to Texas: 

Cowboy hats and big belt buckles. 

Ultimately they get here and are 

blown away by just how big this state 

is. You can put a couple Germanys 

into Texas (or more). They love 

coming here and seeing our robust 

country up-close and personal. 

Anyway, this second week of 

November, a group of three from 

PAG arrived in my workshop. 

Their mission was to talk to service 

people first, managers second. The 

idea being to talk to the folks in the 

trenches and get the absolute feel 

for our work environment when it 

comes to utilizing their information 

systems, which we employ 

while repairing the cars. How is it 

working for us? What information 

are we not getting? What ideas 

do we have to make repairs go 

more efficiently and correctly? 

No part of the workshop environment 

was left off the table. Special 

tools were discussed. Special equipment 

for Hybrid technology was 

discussed. Charging station equipment 

for the 918 was discussed. But 

their biggest concern was this: how 

is our information system working? 

What do we need to do to keep you 

current with a car that left production 

last week? Give us your input! 

The three guys that came over 

were so dedicated and just wonderful 

to converse with. One was in 

charge of Parts (or PET) systems as 

well as Tequipment offering. Another 

was looking at all things having 

to do with Group 1 (engine), 

Group 2 (fuel ignition system), and 

Group 3 (transmissions and 4wd 

systems). The third was intimately 

involved with 918 hybrid drive 

systems (most interesting guy).

They interviewed me first. I 

brought up some short comings 

in PIWIS (Porsche Integrated 

Workshop Information System). 

No torque specs in some repair 

sequence publications, culminating 

in a scavenger hunt to get things 

done right. Software issues that 

could have been easily avoided 

with better system tester training 

for us. More timely informationtechnical 

releases. An informationtechnical 

release is the release 

of introduction information 

for new model year vehicles. 

Ultimately we reminisced about 

the past, and Porsche’s history with 

Audi and VW. I went on and on 

about how techs like me back in 

the day had to work on both lines 

of cars (Porsche+Audi) all day. So I 

told the 918 guy about how I once 

worked at a dealer in Colorado 

and Audi was also in our shop. 

Our cold weather climate made us 

perfect for prototype testing. I was 

given Audis to drive (5000 Turbo, 

5000 Diesel, 4000 4E) way before 

they went into production. Had to 

file reports weekly about the cars. 

Follow strict guidelines about what 

tires we ran in dead of winter. Fuel 

usage was a big concern especially 

with diesel in cold weather environment. 

They had me mixing 1 gallon 

of regular gas with every 9 gallons 

of diesel during temperatures of 

20F or lower. It worked well, by 

the way, back then. I dunno if 

mixing fuels is a good idea with 

the systems of today. I got away 

with it on my ‘03 commuter rat. 

Anyway I went on about how hot 

it gets here and they should send 

me a 918 for prototype testing. I’m 

experienced with this, right?! We 

all had a good laugh at that one. 

Cool people sit in a cubicle 

thousands of miles from here, 

dreaming up new ideas. They work 

to implement them, worry over 

proper execution of their ideas, 

and mother-hen the production 

methods with their colleagues. 

Then once in a while they get to 

leave that cubicle and see where 

the hard work goes. Interact with 

folks like me down the line. This 

to me is what makes Porsche so 

interesting as a company. They do 

what works for them. Try different 

avenues of information gathering. 

The one thing I think they understand 

more than most is simply this: 

Go to the people that are dealing 

with the cars after production at 

workshop level. Ignore everyone 

else. Workshop people are dataoriented. 

We have no time for 

sales numbers (although I care, 

as sales generates my livelihood), 

but I only want data, not “Oh boy, 

iPod is available” information. 

From there these folks sharpen 

their tools for their next ideas . . .

enjoy an evening 

of food, drink and 

Rick and Becky Robinson with 

Veronica and Paul Ramos 

fellowship at BJ’s Restaurant 

and brewhouse. We had 

about 40 members (both 

long time and new) as we 

filled the north side of the 

well-known Plano restaurant. 

I was greeted by Rick and 

Becky Robinson, who played 

host and hostess 

until Bobbie 

and I arrived. 

Thank you Rick 

and Becky for making 

everyone feel welcome. 

Upon my arrival, I met 

Brian and Dana Kleinfall. 

Brian and Dana are new 

members and this was 

their first Happy Hour. 

It took only moments 

for me to become very 

envious as they informed 

BJ Harvey, Tom Froehlich, Mark Hanna, 

John Harvey, and Barb Minnella 

me that they were leaving for 

Germany to conduct a Porsche 

factory tour as well as other wonderful 

activities the next week. 

I am already looking forward 

to the next Happy Hour 

to hear about their trip. 

I also met Chris and Trish Cook, 

who recently acquired their first 

Porsche and were attending their
