Serveitup Digital Magazine December 2016

Why Patterns
When you understand the design,
dimension and the layout
of the tennis court, certain
things become obvious.
The rectangular design of the
court dictates that you will
get the most distance on your
strokes, if you hit them in a
crosscourt manner.
The height of the net, with it
being lower in the middle, and
higher at both ends, also makes
it easier for you to hit to the
crosscourt position.
Therefore hitting the ball over
the highest part of the net requires
more topspin to keep it
the court.
The safest pattern therefore is
hitting crosscourt over the lowest
part of the net, which has
more distance... just in case.
ns
Serveitup
Watching tennis at the highest
level, you will notice the ball
being struck crosscourt; until
someone hits it down the line,
which will start another crosscourt
rally.
So whether it’s the inside-out or
regular crosscourt, or the down
the line or the inside-in shots,
develop these patterns because
tennis is played in patterns.
Digital Magazine December 2016 9

It takes 100% of your physical ability to get to the
highest level of performance. Developing some
areas over others will only expose weaknesses
during competition. Your ability to make shots,
depends on you always being able to get to the
ball, and having the endurance to maintain that
stamina until the last point is played.
100%
Physical

It also takes 100% of your mental ability to get
to the highest level of performance toughness.
It has often been said it’s 80% mental and 20%
physical; but since they are inextricably linked
together you need both. The mental gives you
confidence to make the shots under pressure.
But having confidence mean nothing, if you can’t
get to the ball.
100%
Mental

For junior tennis players to mature and
develop as tough competitive players,
more of the attention has to shift from
the physical aspect of the game, to the
mental aspect. Inordinate amounts of time is spent
daily on mastering the physical aspects of strokes,
fitness and footwork.
Unfortunately, all of this is achieved at
the expense of the mental aspect of
the game. Time and time again you
see junior players in practice; they
look as though they belong on the pro circuit. Then
you see the same player in a match, and the lack of
mental development is manifested by the player
looking as someone who could barely hit the ball
and looks beginner-ish.
The earlier younger players understand
the importance, that the mental aspect
plays in the overall development and
ultimate dominance in their games, the
easier it will be for those player to become driven,
and develop personal winning habits that will lead
to their success.

Balls M
Features
What balls are you practicing wi
‘dead‘ balls, you will get ac
Now when you go to play a tournament, you
get new balls. That higher bounce is going to
give you problems and throw everything off.
Develop the habit of practicing with new balls,
because balls matter.
how good are your
Returns
When last did you go to the courts just to practice your return of
serve? The return of serve is the least practiced stroke, yet it is one
of the first things that you will be doing. Whenever you have to
play a match, you are either serving or returnig the serve. Returning
the serves will determine whether or not you can break your
opponent serve; breaking your opponent serve will determine
who will win the match. So if you can’t return the serves, you can’t
win the match. So how good are your returns!

There is more than one way to hit a forehand!
If a coach tells you there is only one way, he
is actually saying, that he only knows one way,
and one kind of forehand to teach. Don’t let anyone
limit you. Learn as much as you can. This
will only add versatility to your game, and more
weapons into your arsenal.
Serveitup Digital Magazine December 2016 21

Start a Tennis Journal
Never just play a match and then walk away; keep a tennis journal
about everything relevant to the match. This information is
very important to know and keep.
If you are playing competetive junior tennis, it’s a guarantee that
you will do battle with the same opponents more than once;
developing rivalries all the way into the professional ranks.
Keeping a tennis journal, will be your very own private dossier
about every player. This will not be information someone said
to you, it would be what you know and experienced first hand.
Document the things that are important, and the things that
might not seem important. Over time as you review these unimportant
things, you will begin to observe certain patterns beginning
to emerge.
So go ahead and write the normal
• Righty/Lefty.
• One-hander/Two-Hander.
• Baseliner/AllCourt etc.
But also take note of things like
• Slow reaction.
• Can’t handle kick serve on backhand.
• Gets frustrated easily etc.
22
Serveitup Digital Magazine December 2016

This information will empower you and prepare you mentally
to face an opponent. You will never be caught off-guard if by
chance you didn’t get to see the draw or any other scenerio.
Remember that other players may be doing the same thing,
and keeping track of all your strengths and weaknessess.
This information will be your secret vault of antidotes that’s
always available to you. Remember that over time as players
develop in height and strength, their games will evolve. Your
journal will reflect all the changes as they happen, and will continuously
be a wealth of knowledge, that can empower you with
all your strategies ahead of time; even before you take one step
onto the court.

Serveitup Digital Magazine December 2016

My family on my dad’s side has always
played tennis. My grandfather
taught his children, and my dad has
taught my brother and I. I was about
four years old when I got my very
own pink Barbie racket for Christmas.
That very day I asked my dad if we
could go out and hit some balls. Ever
since then, I have not stopped playing.
Tennis is my everyday commitment.
I wake up, go to school, eat, go
to tennis, sleep and repeat. I wouldn’t
dedicate my time to anything else.
The first tournament I played, I was
about 10 years old. I was so nervous;
I kept forgetting the score. I was so
sad I had lost my very first tournament
match I started to cry. After
some ice cream and a long pep talk
from my dad, I was ready to get back
on the court and keep on going.
At around the age of 8 this older
man, named Jamie, took me under
his wing and decided I was going to
be his next player. If I wasn’t training
with my dad, I was training with Jamie.
He gain love from me and from
my family. He has become a huge
part of my tennis career and also a
part of my life now. He’s my third
grandpa and he still supports me
to this day. My dad and Jamie have
been my coaches for years, and I
would not be the player I am today if
it were not for them.
Over time my rackets changed from
Barbie to Yonex and I no longer forget
the score. I’ve played the Orange
Bowl and have traveled to play ITF
tournaments. I’ve played high school
tennis and gone on to win the District
and Regional titles in 2014 and 2015.
I’ve made the Palm Beach post first
team consecutively, and gone to high
school state tournaments every year
I played. I’ve dedicated all my time,
and I’m putting in the hard work. Like
any athlete should, I have put my
blood, sweat, and tears into the sport
I love, and the results prove it.
The next step in my tennis career is to
play college tennis, and hope to continue
this journey. Tennis has become
a part of how I identify myself. It is
what I do every day and what I hope
to still be doing, even when I am a little
old lady. I’ve been lucky enough
to have my dad as my coach, and
other people that have cared enough
about me to take an interest in my
progress. I have been able to do
great things in tennis while still being
an excellent student. Tennis has
taught me a lot of skills that are needed
in order to do great things outside
of the court. Patience and knowing
when to take a good opportunity
are just two skills I have gained from
this sport. I hope to continue to learn
from my experiences and advance to
the next level.
You Gotta
HAVE
Self
Confidence
If you don’t have confidence in yourself
and what you are doing, it doesn’t even
make sense to continue to do it; because
it’s not going to go anywhere. No one
else can have confidence for you. It has
to come directly from you. So until you
have confindence for yourself... in yourself,
don’t even bother to play matches.
Even if your parents, your friends and your
coach believe in you, it isn’t going to go
anywhere... without your self confidence.

In the last issue of the magazine, our cover story Olivia Shea shared
something that was very precious to her. It was something her mom,
“a tennis pro“ gave to her when she was going to play her first tournament.
Olivia kept it, and it has motivated her down through the years.
You our readers wanted to know what it was, so here is a copy of the
