More than a year after a group of golf 

enthusiasts purchased West Orange 

Country Club and upgraded the property, 

membership has grown significantly. 

“It’s been good,” said Jim Karr, a managing 

partner of West Orange Country 

Club. “We’re encouraged that the club is 

going to make it.” 

Founded by citrus growers, West 

Orange Country Club opened in 1967, 

with a tree-lined, 71-par golf course designed 

by Lloyd Clifton. The club became 

a vital part of the community. Throughout 

the years, interest in golfing waned, and 

the membership aged.

Karr, who joined the club in 1981, continues 

to fight the negative comments by 

some naysayers that he and his partners 

plan to close the club. That is neither his 

nor the other investors’ intentions. They are 

working to ensure it succeeds as a golf 

course. 

Ed Neill, a part-time Winter Garden 

resident, has belonged to the club for 

about 10 years. He said that he invested 

to help save it, so he can continue to enjoy 

the unpretentious atmosphere and comfortable 

camaraderie.

According to county records, the new 

owners purchased the club in July 2015 

for nearly $1.3 million. At the time, it had 

148 members. The new owners invested 

more than $500,000 in improvements, including 

repaving the parking lot, adding 

pavers and new furniture to the pool deck, 

resurfacing the tennis courts, and adding a 

new driving mat to the driving range. 

Membership has grown to 250 members 

as of this month. 

“We are encouraged by the progress, 

but we still have a ways to go,” Karr said. 

“We are anxious to have other people 

come out and enjoy this hidden gem.” 

Many new members have signed on for 

a social golf membership with four prepaid 

rounds of golf per month. Additional 

rounds can be purchased. Social members 

have full access to the pool, tennis and 

club facilities. 

“We’re getting a number of young families,” 

Karr said. “It’s allowed the younger 

families to come out and use the pool.” 

Many children are taking survival swim 

lessons. Other folks just relax by the pool 

and cool off in the water. Karr plans to 

extend the pool deck to accommodate all 

of the people who enjoy the pool. 

The Windermere and west Orange 

communities are some of the fastest 

growing in the county, so the population 

increase should bode well for the club. 

Membership is not limited to the immediate 

area, with some members living in 

Seminole and Lake counties. 

Anyone can dine at the club, but golfing 

on the 18-hole course is reserved 

for members only. The club does offer a 

member-for-a-day program, so prospective 

members can try the course and see 

if they like it, and it is open seven days 

per week. 

Young people are learning to play the 

game at the golf clinics, led by Brendon 

Chase, assistant golf professional, and 

during afternoon lessons. Even young children 

are taking up clubs and enjoying the 

sport. Youth in high school or college can 

join on a student membership and play the 

game and practice. Student memberships 

include golf privileges after 2 p.m. 

“This is the youngest group of people I 

have seen out here ever,” Karr said. “That’s 

the future of golf. If we don’t get younger folks 

out, I don’t know if the game will survive.” ª

QPC Games is in the business of 

making dreams a reality. A printer 

and producer of custom-designed 

playing cards and tabletop games, 

the Southwest Orlando-based company 

is more of a marketing business 

than a manufacturer. 

“Playing cards are a fantastic 

marketing and branding tool,” said 

Charles Levin, founder and CEO 

of QPC Games. “What we sell is a 

blank canvas. You can print whatever 

you want.” 

Back in 1999, Levin, who got his 

start in time-share marketing before 

taking a break to start a family in 

Southwest Orlando, saw a business 

opportunity in playing cards 

used for promotions. 

“People use them, and they don’t 

discard them like they lose a pen, 

hat or coffee mug,” he said. “It’s 

a perpetual form of marketing. 

Unless you lose a card in a deck, 

you don’t throw them away. They 

have a lasting value to people.” 

Levin knew he wasn’t stumbling 

across a novel idea. Playing cards 

have been around for centuries

But other than business applications, 

he recognized that 

custom playing cards can have personal 

applications as well, including 

swag at weddings, parties and 

other special occasions. 

“A little less than four years ago, 

I was working out of my garage,” 

Levin said. “Now we have 8,000 

square feet, 12 full-time employees, 

and 12 part time. We manufacture 

games for everyone, ranging from 

first-time inventors and kick-starter 

projects to massive industry veterans 

and major name brands.” 

Purchasing printing and manufacturing 

equipment transformed 

the business. Previously outsourcing 

printing, cutting and box-making to 

partners in China, Levin brought 

production in-house and can now

The process starts with an initial 

consultation, during which a QPC

works with clients to determine 

the exact needs of their 

project, including material options. 

Special weight paper is shipped 

from France for clients who desire 

casino-quality playing cards. 

Aqueous coating is used to give 

cards extra durability, elasticity 

and shine. For tarot and oversized 

cards that are held and displayed 

rather than played, harder, more 

rigid coating is used. 

The in-house graphics department 

offers complimentary design support 

at no cost to clients. 

“A lot of our clients know exactly 

what they want but don’t have the 

tools or skills to make it themselves,” 

Levin said. 

As part of his mission to not “nickel 

and dime” clients, Levin doesn’t 

charge printer set-up fees, hike up 

shipping on rush orders, or upcharge 

for full-color printing. 

QPC requires only a 10-deck minimum 

for playing-card orders, while 

many competitors require a 2,500- 

deck minimum. 

“We’re the only company based 

in the U.S. offering low quantities at 

prices competitive with international 

production,” Levin said. 

Cards are printed, cut, rounded on 

the edges, wrapped in cellophane 

and fed into a custom-designed box. 

Levin said QPC’s new customshape 

box-making machine is really 

a game changer.

any scale in the U.S.”

& Wine Festival in partnership

Central Florida’s new Minor League 

Baseball team announced its name 

— the Florida Fire Frogs. The name 

is a result of hundreds of submissions 

throughout the summer during the 

team’s “Name the Team” contest. It 

also released its 2017 Florida State 

League schedule and announced the 

sale of season seat memberships. The 

Florida State League team, formerly 

the Brevard County Manatees, will 

move from the Space Coast Stadium 

into its new home at Osceola County 

Stadium in 2017. 

A glowing red frog ablaze with 

flames is the centerpiece of the 

team’s new identity, surrounded with 

traditional lettering to make up its primary 

mark. Its colors are fire red, navel 

orange and golden sun, and fans

For the seventh year in a row, 

the Clerks for a Cure team participated 

in American Cancer Society’s 

Making Strides Against Breast 

Cancer Walk, an annual event held 

at Lake Eola Park to raise money 

and awareness to help find a cure 

for breast cancer. Clerks for a Cure 

exceeded its goal of $2,500 and 

raised $3,910 for this year’s event. 

Since 2010, the first year the clerk’s 

office participated in the walk, the 

Clerks for a Cure team has raised 

nearly $70,000 for cancer research.

“Almost every one of us has been 

touched in some way by this terrible 

disease,” said Clerk Tiffany 

Moore Russell of Southwest 

Orlando. “This is why the Making 

Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk 

is such as important cause.” 

The SunRidge Middle School 

boys soccer team started its season 

with the goal of defending its championship 

run of two consecutive years. 

It went undefeated to win the division 

title and made it to the semifinals. 

Before its loss in the semifinals, the 

team went an unprecedented 25-0. 

The SRMS girls soccer team defended 

its 2015 district title, closing
