Local dog trainer receives rare decoy certification
Northbrook, Ill. dog
trainer Carlos D. Aguirre
recently joined the ranks
of an elite group after
competing in the Championnat
Du Monde Mondioring
held in Herve, Belgium.
The owner of Wolf’s
Lair K9 now holds a Level
3 International Decoy Certification
in Mondioring, a
level that only four others
in the entire US have accomplished.
“It’s a wonderful thing
to be able to do what you
are passionate about and
be recognized for it. Training
dogs is something I
have dedicated my life to
and this certification reminds
me that all the hard
work is worth it. I will
continue to participate in
the sport and hope to improve
my skills and world
rankings in future events,”
said Aguirre of his Level 3
certification.
The certification comes
after devoting years to
training and honing skills
necessary to successfully
compete with the best in
the sport. As a Master
Trainer, Certified Decoy,
and Marine Corps Veteran,
patience, dedication, and a
hardworking attitude come
naturally to Aguirre.
The sport at hand, Mondioring,
requires participants
to complete three
phases without interruption:
obedience, agility and
protection. Each section
consists of several exercises
that are judged based
on set criteria and assisted
by a decoy. For most of the
exercises, handlers are not
told beforehand what must
be done.
Unlike in the dog shows
and competitions often
aired on television, Aguirre
was not there to prove
his own dog’s prowess, but
rather to exhibit his own
skills and earn his decoy
certification. The international
competition invites
trainers and handlers from
around the world to put
their skills to the test.
As a decoy, Aguirre is
responsible for helping the
judge evaluate the dog’s
working ability by confronting
the dog and allowing
it to demonstrate
its protection work. The
certification that Aguirre
received is the highest
available in the sport and
can only be granted by the
International Super Selection
Committee.
In order to receive the
certification, Aguirre had to
have a current Level 2 Certification,
and compete in at
least 10 trials. His certification
also involved a written
test and practical evaluation.
The practical exam
tests the decoy on a number
of skills, including interaction
with the dog and proper
use of equipment.
The skills necessary by
both dog and human to be
successful in Mondioring
may appear vastly different
than what is desired
from a companion animal,
but Aguirre asserts that the
training principles remain
the same.
“Whether I’m training
a dog for competition,
personal protection,
or simply basic obedience
I still work with the same
concepts: patience, control
and attentiveness. These
skills are what keep a dog
physically and mentally
stable and a good pet for
your family,” Aguirre explained.
Aguirre and his wife,
Elly, started Wolf’s Lair K9
to help owners train happy,
healthy, and well-mannered
dogs in 2012. They do everything
from basic obedience
to personal protection
to agility. To find out more
“Reiki’s gentle and nurturing
energy is an ancient
technique that is the wave
of the future,” Moretta
said. “For those looking
for a more holistic approach
to health and wellness
the opportunities are
endless.”
Moretta discovered energy
healing through her
own need for healing.
After leading a successful
corporate management
position while raising two
young daughters, she suddenly
found herself in need
of medical help. The stress
and demands of a fastpaced
career and family life
had taken its toll. She was
diagnosed with an autoimmune
condition similar to
Lupus that demanded she
immediately pay more attention
to herself.
Doctors offered a host of
pharmaceuticals, but she
knew the key was in making
life changes and embracing
holistic mind and
body wellness techniques
to heal herself.
“I began practicing yoga
and meditation,” Moretta
said. “Later I received my
first Reiki session, and although
initially skeptical,
I immediately became a
believer and an outspoken
advocate of this transformative
healing art.”
Having experienced the
profound healing that she
did, her passion to share
it with as many people
as possible was ignited.
Moretta left her corporate
career and began studying
different modalities of energy
healing, advancing to
Master Teacher with Reiki
as her chosen specialty.
Along with her healing
treatments, Moretta is also
a certified yoga instructor.
‘Die Fledermaus’ at
Light Opera Works
Even theatergoers with a
passing acquaintance with
Johann Strauss Jr.’s perennially
popular comic operetta,
“Die Fledermaus,”
have some idea of what to
expect — swirling waltzes,
beautiful gowns, flowing
champagne and soaring
strings — in short, a
trip to that ballroom wonderland
beloved of lyrical
romances from the musical
stages of old Vienna to
the sound stages of classic
Hollywood.
But true “Fledermaus”
aficionados know that when
Act Three rolls around, there
is one more thing to expect:
the unexpected. That will
certainly be the case this
December at Light Opera
Works in Evanston, when
the North Shore’s own Tim
Kazurinsky, a “Saturday
Night Live” alum and veteran
stage and screen actor,
takes the stage as the jailer
Frosch, whose comic freestyling
is every bit as much
a “Fledermaus” tradition as
the waltzes and champagne.
“Die Fledermaus” translates
as “The Bat,” a reference
tells the story of
Falke’s uproarious revenge
taken, naturally, at
yet another champagnesoaked
soiree.
Everyone at that party
behaves so badly that the
final act can take place no
where else but jail, and it
is there that we meet the
inimitable Frosch. Inimitable
because, like snowflakes
and eggnog recipes,
no Frosch is like any other.
It has become tradition to
Kazurinsky follows in
a long line of funnymen
Froschs. At the Metropolitan
Gilford owned the role
for two decades; later, the
part was taken up there by
such notable clowns as Sid
Caesar, Dom DeLuise and
Bill Irwin, each bringing
something unique to Johann
Strauss Jr.’s mad and
melodic comedy of errors.
So as you sit back to
Napolita heats thin-crust pizza to perfection
Napolita which opened
at the beginning of last December,
specializes in its
Neapolitan pizzas cooked
in a wood-burning Stefano
Ferrara oven, imported
from Naples, Italy, weighs
7,000 pounds and heats to
900 degrees Fahrenheit —
about twice the temperature
at which pizzas are
typically cooked.
And this allows the thincrust
pizza to be heated to
perfection in less than two
minutes.
“We just love the type
of pizza, we think it’s very
unique to Wilmette, and
there’s nothing like it in
the area,” Napolita’s Josh
Schonfeld said. “It’s really
a quality pizza with quality
ingredients. The ingredients
speak for themselves.
Simple is the way to go.”
Schonfeld prides himself
on the simplicity of
the pizza’s dough, which
has four ingredients: water,
flour, yeast and salt.
The restaurant imports
its flour — caputo — from
Naples, as well as the salt,
pepper and olive oil on
the tables. It also receives
weekly imports of cheese
and tomatoes.
Schonfeld said he was
first introduced to the Italian
way of making pizza
when he studied abroad in
Rome a decade ago.
“I know the concept of
how pizzas are served and
how they’re cooked,” said
Schonfeld, who noted he
lost 15 pounds during his
six-month stay in Italy and
attributed the loss to the
use of fresh ingredients in
food.
The entryway opens up
to a sprawling, wooden
bar, with the oven housed
in the far corner. High-top
tables fill the first portion
of the restaurant, with regular
tables occupying the
side room.
The restaurant has low
lighting and dark walls
paired with white subway
tiles.
The owners wanted to
convey the feeling you’d
get if you walked into a
place in Italy. They’re not
going for American comfort:
They’re going for authenticity.
Joe Coughlin, publisher
of 22nd Century Media,
and several editors got a
look and taste of that authenticity
during a visit to
the restaurant.
They tried four of Napolita’s
pizzas, which are
separated into two categories
on the menu: red and
white sauce.
First up were the bufalina
($16) and capricciosa
($15) red-sauce pizzas.
The bufalina, a signature
pizza, was delicious in its
simplicity: buffalo mozzarella
and basil on red
sauce and fluffy dough.
The capricciosa combined
mozzarella and red sauce
with porcini mushrooms,
olives, artichokes and a
small, over-easy farm egg
on top.
The following pizzas
were worth the mess of
their drippy white sauce.
We tried the prosciutto
e rucola ($15), a satisfying
mix of prosciutto and
arugula, and the salsiccia
bianca ($15), a ricottacheese
pizza with its sausage
made in-house.
Napolita also serves a
variety of wines, beers and
liquor including Grappa,
an Italian liquor, and five
Italian beers on tap.
Napolita is currently
seven days a week for
lunch and dinner, with
brunch service on Saturday
and Sundays. Happy
Hour from Mondays
through Thursday offers
customers 50 percent off
bottles of wines and all
pizzas for $11.
Napolita accepts reservations
for any size party, and
reservations can be made at
out service is also available
and orders can be placed at
La Relance Salon covers all of your hair needs
La Relance Salon’s strategy is
simple: They strive to use basic
foundations of good beauty business
practices. Fashion, performance,
lifestyle, and the care for
our environment are the core of
their brand. La Relance strives
to use and retail products of integrity.
Sulphate-free, Sodium
Chloride-free, Paraben-free,
PPD-free, and cruelty-free products
that utilize packaging that
is recyclable, recycled or biodegradable
are just an example.
With in-house advanced training
by the salon’s owner, Amanda
Iqbal, and the director of education,
Michael Apodaca, the staff
excels in their chosen career.
Having more than 40 years of
experience between them, this
team has an inspirational story of
simple hard work ethics.
The latest service addition to
the salon menu is $150 smoothing
treatments using the sought
after Keratin Complex.
“I have lost quite a bit of the
salon’s smoothing treatment
business due to the savvy marketing
of Groupon. How can you
compete with half off of the recommended
service pricing? Well
I did just that,” Iqbal said. “I
have stylists that are our in house
smoothing specialists. They will
be available during regular salon
hours with no blackout time.
We have highly trained and extremely
talented stylists waiting
to create your best look. We have
not rid of our other smoothing
treatments this is just an addition
to our service list. I recommend
coming in for a complimentary
consultation for the best experience
and to ensure a proper service
price quote.”
When asked about the integrity
of the products used and
sold at the salon, Apodaca said:
“There is no legal definition of
natural when it comes to beauty
products, each manufacturer is
free to define it as they wish and
market their products as natural
regardless of the ingredients
they use. This means companies
can define natural on their
own terms, ignoring the chemical
processes and reactions that
many raw materials go through
as they engineer them for their
purposes. At the same time there
is a lot of scaremongering and
ill-informed views on what is
good and bad for both the consumer
and the environment
being fed to us from different
means. We believe in nature as a
rule but we acknowledge that the
moment you start turning proteins
into amino acids, splitting
fat molecules, effecting hydrolysis,
executing esterification or
hydrogenation, it just isn’t that
natural anymore.”
Simple science is used to design
and create products that perform
better, behave more safely
and are cleaner for you and the
environment.
“This is the kind of science we
believe in, simple natural formulations
engineered with honest
intentions to produce integral,
safe products,” Iqbal said.
Among the products used at
the salon are Kevin Murphy,
Aveda, L’Oreal Professional,
Moroccan Oil, Triumph and Disaster,
Brazilian Blowout, and
Keratin Complex.
“Amanda brought in a retail
line called Triumph and Disaster.
We were one of the first salons
to carry it in the U.S. It follows
all of our requirements for product
integrity. One of my favorite
products in the skin care and
shaving line is Rock & Roll Suicide,”
said Tori Cohn, a senior
stylist. “It is an exfoliant scrub
that uses clays rich in iron, magnesium
and potassium in combination
with volcanic ash to rid of
impurities.”
Triumph & Disaster created a
shaving experience that works a
little harder by delivering a tighter,
closer shave, leaving the face
feeling fresh and new.
