EDITOR’S NOTE
EVERY END IS A
NEW BEGINNING
It would seem that time is passing by
faster every day. Before you know it, it
is year-end and we are about to ring in
the New Year yet again. For some, yearends
mean looking back and reflecting on
the year they had; for others, it is crunch
time to make changes and prepare for the
upcoming year.
Change is all around us – you see it every
day in the weather, traffic conditions, and
even your mood! We are huge fans of
change simply because more often than
not, it is a chance for betterment and it
also helps us keep up with the time and
trends. We have grown over the years as
a magazine and have only become better,
and in this issue, we are changing our look
and feel to improve further.
Changing up a magazine is no small task;
in fact it is pretty similar to decorating
or designing a house. You start by
carefully studying what you have, looking
through and knowing what essentials
structure needs to be kept, what is good enough to be retained, and what can be
further improved.
Once you have gone through these processes, you put them together and
slowly tweak it to ensure it all fits well together. Plenty of thought and effort was
put into this revamp and there will be further changes in the issues to come no
doubt, as we fine tune the new look and feel of the magazine.
As always, flip to the wood free paper section to find out about what’s been
happening with Tropicana. In this issue we have exciting news about the recent
topping up ceremony for The Residences, several donations, and even winning
an award!
COVER STORY | PAVING THE WAY FORWARD
More often than not in Malaysia, your parents would have told
you ‘if you fail in school, you fail in life’ while growing up. But
that is not always the case, just ask Dato’ CC Ngei, who through
hard work, determination and drive to succeed has made him
the successful businessman that he is today. His success story
ironically begun with failure.
Back when it all first begun, when he was merely 12, his father collected
left over mosaic discarded at construction sites to be used to tile up coffee
shops. Dato’ CC used to help his dad clean these tiles in the swimming pool
at home which was used to soak them for days to rid them off impurities.
Few years down the road, Dato’ CC dropped
“It was no longer just
about money, it was also
how the business was
run and the company’s
role in making an impact’’
out of high school after failing his Form
3 exams and joined his father in the tiling
industry. At this point in time, his father had
opened a tiling shop in Seri Kembangan.
It only seemed natural for him to join his
father and venture further into the tiling
industry. Unlike most bosses’ children who
join family businesses, he did everything from
cleaning bathrooms to sending tile stocks.
Three years into it, his father opened yet
another outlet in Serdang and put Dato’ CC in charge of running the outlet
at the tender age of 19, and he continued there for another nine years,
learning the traits of the business.
Before hitting the big 3-0, he realised it was a good time to start up a tile
trading business as there was a growing demand for imported tiles from
China and so he ventured out and opened a tiling business with a partner.
Business was good and they supplied tiles throughout Malaysia to not only
contractors and homeowners, but to tile businesses as well.
Towards the end of 2009, Dato’ CC decided to split ways with his
business partner as his perspective of running a business changed.
That was his turning point in his business life and the birth of Feruni
Ceramiche.
It was no longer just about money, it was also how the business was
run and the company’s role in making an impact. The ultimate purpose
was delivering happiness, and he came up with four purposes in running
Feruni to achieve just that, starting with cultivating talent internally by
matching staff’s talent and passion with what they do to create leaders
instead of followers. The office was even designed to be very conducive
and comfortable for his colleagues – fully equipped with a gym, game
room, and even a “talent stage”.
The second key purpose of the business is giving back to
the community by setting aside 10 per cent of all profit for
this very purpose. During the Nepal earthquake for instance,
he worked together with his mentor Dato’ Michael Tio by
posting on their Facebook pages that they will match the
amount of every ringgit donated by people. Within two
weeks, they managed to gather RM350,000. In addition to
the usual donations and visits to nursing homes, he made it
compulsory for all Feruni staff to spend a significant amount
of hours with the community.
Transformation is the third purpose
of the business, in terms of making
the tiling industry exciting enough
to attract the millennial to join them.
He committed himself to conducting
weekly Discover Feruni Tours and
through these sessions, tries to change
the mindset of how people view
the tiling business. One of his more
interesting recruits is an employee
who was supposed to start her
housemanship but instead she decided to join him and now
uses her masters in psychology to cultivate talents within the
company.
The last of four business purposes is the value-based
organisation – how they can use their 10 core values to guide
them as a company and empower colleagues instead of using
the old rigid methods of policies. He knows that results can
be achieved in many ways; however it needs to be achieved
through the right way using the 10 core values.
To further show his determination and drive to succeed,
he brushed up on his command of English by reading books
and looking up each word in the dictionary. To date, his
highest annual record is 42 books. These books range from
any kind of topics depending on what he feels he needs more
knowledge of. If at one point he feels he needs to know more
about interior design for instance, he picks up books in the
field and learns as much as he can.
When asked what he enjoys most or looks forward to at
work, Dato’ CC says he always tries to find more ways to
inspire people, starting with his own colleagues. He believes
PAVING THE WAY FORWARD | COVER STORY
COVER STORY | PAVING THE WAY FORWARD
that
“only when
they are inspired to
transform themselves can they
help you transform the industry.”
He very much agrees with Bill Hybels’
saying “Everyone wins when a leader
gets better.” He recently even started a
small group of 25 entrepreneurs called
EGGS (E-equip yourself, G-growth, G-give
back, S-sustainability) held every fortnightly on
Monday evenings covering a range of topics from
being better leaders to serving right values.
When it comes to the property outlook in the
current economy, he advises, “Always buy within your
means. Location and choice of developer is important
too.” One of his preferred developers is Tropicana,
a brand which he thinks projects a feeling of
youthfulness and vibrancy. He believes Tropicana is
committed in building a community and appreciates
the effort and thought in construction. His favourite
project is Tropicana Grande, as the building has
movable parts to block the sunshine – an element
which shows the developer’s consideration effort
in planning ahead to provide a comfortable and
pleasant living environment for its buyers.
Dato’ CC’s affinity for the Tropicana brand is due
to the similarities between Feruni and Tropicana
as both share the same values in improving the
standards of living through innovative solutions.
Like the developer, Feruni is dedicated in playing
a role to create beautiful spaces and enhance the
quality of living by bringing the world’s latest tile
trends into Malaysian homes.
Game changer - a potentially
overused phrase that’s
been used to describe
visionaries in their field
like Steve Jobs, Albert
Einstein, Mark Zuckenberg
and Gandhi but no one
embodies its meaning in architecture more
than Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright was a
cultural icon whose trailblazing work defined
and shaped the twentieth-century American
landscape. Apart from being prolific and
often controversial, Wright, who was also an
educator, a writer, an art collector, a furniture
designer and philosopher, always championed
that buildings should be made from the land
and benefit the land. This ethos, so avant garde
at that time, has stood the test of time and his
work, which were informed by said beliefs,
still looks timeless today.
Born in the Midwest in 1867, Wright
spent much of his professional life in
that region although he also practised in
California, New York and Japan. He never
graduated from university but worked
his way up from the position of
draughtsman and went on to live
a life peppered with personal
scandal, tragedy
and uncertain
finances. None of this got in the way of his
remarkable legacy of work encompassing four
styles of building which evolved as his career
progressed. The Prairie Style was born out of
his belief that we needed fewer, larger rooms
which flowed more easily and his rebellion
against the rigid Victorian era architecture
of that time. Then came the Textile Style
which was named for its usage of precast
“textile” concrete blocks reinforced by an
internal system of bars, this led the way to the
Organic Style which Wright described as thus:
“Coming in the house would be something
like putting on your hat and going outdoors.”
In the aftermath of the Great Depression,
Wright developed the Usonian Style which
championed affordable housing while still
conforming to his Organic ethos.
In his 90 years, Wright designed some
1,000 structures of all shapes and sizes: homes,
hotels, office buildings, museums,
schools, churches,
chapels and
synagogues, and even a doghouse. Recently
ten of his buildings were nominated for
UNESCO World Heritage status but while
this did not ultimately pan out (the honour
went to renowned Swiss-French architect Le
Corbusier instead), Wright’s remarkable work
bears revisiting, here are seven of the best
from the architect who many still consider as
America’s greatest.
“Every great architect is -
necessarily - a great poet. He must
be a great original interpreter of
his time, his day, his age.”
- Frank Lloyd Wright
ROBIE HOUSE
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Located in Chicago, Illinois, Robie House
was built in 1910 and featured a horizontal
roofline, large overhanging eaves, continuous
ribbons of windows, and a wide-open
living space at its center. This sleek, modern
residence contrasted from the European
inspired style of homes of that era where the
interior space was chopped into small, boxy
rooms. A radical departure not only in style, it
also changed the lifestyle of the family towards
something more flexible and informal, an
achievement which Wright called “a source of
world-wide architectural inspiration.”
TALIESIN
SPRING GREEN, WISCONSIN
Rambling and palatial Taliesin in Spring
Green, Wisconsin, was Wright’s home and
studio up to the end of his life. First completed
in 1911, it went through several incarnations,
twice after two fires, but a constant motif was
how Wright masterfully married architecture
with the lovely, peaceful landscape of this
sprawling 600-acre estate. Considered one
of the finest examples of his Prairie style,
Taliesin, which means shining brow in Welsh,
continues to evolve with its usage and today
houses an architecture school.
THE IMPERIAL HOTEL
TOKYO
Japan was the only country outside America
which Wright built in and the architect’s
fascination with the country was well-known,
calling it “the most romantic, most beautiful”
on earth. Because of this, he pursued (and
won) the commission to built The Imperial
Hotel in Tokyo which was completed in
1923. To fulfill the hotel’s role of pleasing
foreign visitors with the latest amenities while
upholding Japan’s proud aesthetic tradition,
Wright keep the design fairly classical although
it included controversial “floating foundations”
to protect the structure from Tokyo’s frequent
earthquakes. Wright’s foresight was wellserved
as the Imperial Hotel survived the
Kanto Earthquake which hit on the day of its
opening with barely a scratch. However, rising
costs saw the redevelopment of the site in 1967
although parts of the hotel can still be seen at
the Meiji Mura Museum.
completed in 1936,
notion in the day”
ENNIS HOUSE
LOS FELIZ, LOS ANGELES
Designed by Wright in 1923 and built by
his son, Lloyd, Ennis House is the last and
largest of the elder Wright’s four “textile”
concrete block houses in the Los Angeles
area. It’s unique and dramatic appearance has
starred in a long list of movies, TV shows, and
commercials, particularly after appearing in
Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner as bounty hunter
Rick Deckhard’s cyberpunk apartment. Said
to be inspired by Mayan temples, the massive
6,000 square feet home is constructed of more
than 27,000 concrete blocks, all made by hand
using decomposed granite extracted from
the site.
FALLINGWATER
MILL RUN, PENNSYLVANIA
Easily one of the most extraordinary
private residences ever built, it’s still hard
to believe that Fallingwater, located in Mill
Run, Pennsylvania, was built in 1935. An
astounding accomplishment not only of
architecture, but also of engineering, the
structure is a masterpiece in concrete, steel,
and glass, built with three levels that project
over a 30-foot waterfall. Considered the finest
example of Wright’s Organic Style, the tiered,
cascading terraces echo the flow of the water
and these cantilevered terraces make the home
and waterfall one continuous, fluid sculpture.
JOHNSON WAX BUILDING
MILWAUKEE
Wright’s spectacular Johnson Wax Building,
just south of Milwaukee and completed in
1936, sought not just to innovate the perceived
notion of an office, it wished to change the way
people worked. The highlight of the building
is the infamous Great Workroom, a half-acre
open space filled by nearly 60 21-foot-tall
dendriform columns that almost seem to float
throughout the room. These elegant pillars,
known collectively as the lily pad, hold up the
roof, thus allowing for walls made partially
of glass tubes and allows for a great deal of
natural light to flood the space during the
day. It also promoted having an open office, a
radical notion in the day.
THE SOLOMON R. GUGGENHEIM
MUSEUM
NEW YORK CITY
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in
New York City has become one of the city’s
most recognisable icons since it was completed
in 1943. While its reinforced-concrete spiral
form is now a landmark for art lovers, visitors,
and pedestrians alike, those same curves faced
opposition from the client, building-code
sticklers and, most significantly, artists who
doubted that paintings could be displayed
properly on a slanting spiral ramp. While time
has proven that it is indeed an awkward space
to hang paintings, Wright’s complete sellassurance
prophetically foretold the effect that
Frank Gehry’s distinctive Guggenheim would
have in Bilbao, Spain.
that he expects the development to be sold
The glamorous design of the building and
its rooms can be attributed to SOM, whose
fame as an architectural firm has spread far
and wide. Complementing the exquisite
residential units are state-of-the-art facilities
such as a saltwater sky pool, a Jacuzzi, a glasswalled
exercise studio, a lush forest lounge
and a sports bar with pool table and games
on Level 53 of The Residences.
The Residences also proves that its
beauty is not just skin deep with its successful
categorisation as a green building by
incorporating resource and energy-efficient
features in operations such as powering lifts
and other utilities, adhering to Tropicana’s
DNA and demonstrating a forward-thinking
environmental sensitivity.
“Tropicana has been a visionary client
determined to bring back both commerce
and sustainability to this key area,” Zhang
said. “It has been a huge privilege to have
had the opportunity to build an iconic green
building in KL that stretches up to the sky.”
Amenities and layout aside, a strong
selling point of the tower is its strategic
location on the original Millionaires' Row,
just two minutes' walk from the iconic
Petronas Twin Towers. This makes it ideal
for buyers seeking luxurious yet convenient
accommodation as it is situated within
commercial and education hubs in the
city, including hotspots such as the TREC
entertainment hub, Chinatown, Central
Residents will also enjoy easy access to
the extensive public transportation network
in the city, with an LRT station in nearby
able to take them easily around Kuala
TGCR CLUB CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIP
TROPICANA GOLF & COUNTRY
RESORT
29-31 JULY 2016
The penultimate golf event of the year
arrived with great anticipation as all 120
players practiced for weeks on end for a
shot at being named the club champion. At
the end of the first day, Richard Yee (8) and
Eddie Long (15) both sizzled with 68, but
Richard had a stronger back nine and so
won the countback, while Ho Jo Yee (12)
pipped Jessie Teng (21) for nett honours in
the ladies category with 72.
Day Two saw tournament favourite
Jimmy Chia (2) producing the best gross
score of the day to surge to a six-stroke
advantage over Jaydon Pang, while last
year’s ladies championship runner-up Ireen
Teng (6) shot an 81 to take the lead in
the ladies’ category. Meanwhile, William
Lim (6) shot 69 nett to win the countback
against Ng Kah Hui (12) and Yan Zi Xin
scored 70 to top the ladies’ nett score
standings.
The final day arrived. Day Two leader
Jimmy Chia saw his lead chipped away
by Jaydon Pang until they were both tied
going into the short par 5 18th. With the
championship at stake, Jimmy missed his
30-foot curler and Jaydon made a slippery
40-foot downhill, double breaker putt to
clinch victory.
In the ladies’ category, Ireen Teng
snatched a five-stroke victory over
defending champion Dato Azlina – and
Ireen’s sister, Jessie Teng, took the ladies
nett champion with a three-day score of
218. The men nett champion was Ng Kah
Wui, the only player to finish under par
in the nett category at 215, while the best
scores of the day belonged to William Cheah
at 73 gross and Dato Azlina at 81 gross.
Congratulations to all winners!
AN EXCITING NITE RACE
TROPICANA GOLF & COUNTRY RESORT
15 OCTOBER 2016
On 15 October 2016, over 200 runners
swarmed Tropicana Golf & Country Resort
(Tropicana) for the annual Nite Race,
organised by Tropicana and Supernet
ages and were flagged off at different times
by representatives from Supernet Media,
sponsors and a few department heads
from Tropicana.
Runners visited booths offering
complimentary professional services in the
Golf Wing, such as those by KPJ Healthcare
Berhad, Spine & Joint and 4Life, as well
as warming up with an energetic Zumba
workout before the race. Then it was time
to race around the picturesque East 1 golf
course, cheered on by their family and
friends.
Even the young, like 12-year-old Sharaf
Amirul bin Shazally, loved it: “This is the
The golf course is beautiful and the roads
SECOND TO NONE | THE SWING
A
legendary name among the
American golf fraternity,
Pinehurst No.2 has inspired
fear and adoration within
professional golfers for
over a century with its
challenging yet stunning
design. It has hosted more single golf
championship than any other US course and
has seen many iconic golfing moments play out
upon its crowned greens. Yet the birth of this
celebrated course happened almost by accident
– and its rise to fame was, in fact, partly driven
by revenge.
When Scottish-born Donald J. Ross
arrived at Pinehurst in 1900, he had no
experience in golf course design, but was soon
tasked with redesigning the original Pinehurst
No. 1 and creating three new courses. Of these,
Pinehurst No.2 would emerge as his signature
creation, which he has
famously said is “the fairest
test of championship golf I
have ever designed”.
Opening in 1907 with
‘whisker’ mounds of native
wire grass, cross hazards and
the crowned, undulating
greens that would later
become Ross’s trademark,
Pinehurst No.2 was a
physical manifestation of
his philosophy that a course
should provide golfers with
strategic options. “My aim,”
he said, “is to lay out an
alternate route on practically
every hole.” He soon reaped the rewards of his
labour when Pinehurst No.2 was chosen to
be the permanent home of the Men’s United
North and South Amateur Championship just
two years later.
After he was passed over to be the architect
of Augusta National, a miffed Ross redoubled
his efforts on his pet project with a major
two-year overhaul of Pinehurst No.2 in
1933. Among his sweeping changes were the
creation of two new holes, the rebuilding and
re-contouring of all the greens, the installation
of irrigation pipes, the addition of new tees
and bunkers and the use of Bermuda grass to
replace the sand and clay putting surfaces.
When the completed course was unveiled
in time to host the 1936 PGA Championship,
Johnny Revolta commented: “I don’t see
how a course could be any harder, but at the
“I don’t see
how a course
could be any
harder, but
at the same
time it’s the
most pleasant
course I’ve
ever seen’’
same time it’s the most pleasant course I’ve
ever seen.”
That deceptively mild appearance is a
characteristic of many Ross-designed courses,
and Pinehurst No.2 is the mother of them all.
Ross’s original design greatly respected the
natural topography of the Pinehurst terrain
and the bunkers of his Pinehurst No.2 looked
as if they had always existed in nature. The
fairways are relatively level and water only
appears near one hole – not even in play. Yet
the mastery in Ross’s design is that, true to
his vision, it is an unforgiving test of a golfer’s
abilities, demanding extraordinary precision
and harshly punishing even the smallest errors
in judgment.
“It’s not that it’s so difficult,” said American
golf coach David T. Pelz in The Augusta
Chronicle. “It’s that it is so much more difficult
than it looks like it’s going to be. People shoot
much higher numbers there
than they expect to shoot, and
they don’t quite know how it
happened to them.”
Ever the perfectionist,
Ross continued to tweak and
modify Pinehurst No.2 until his
death in 1948, and the course
has continued to evolve since
then to meet the specifications
of various tournaments.
However, in 2010, design firm
Coore & Crenshaw was hired
to restore the course to Ross’s
original vision and they did so
in dramatic fashion; when it
reopened the following year, it
had had its rough eliminated, roughly 35 acres
of irrigated turf removed in favour of natural
sand and hardpan areas, extensively increased
fairway widths and rigid bunkers replaced with
natural bunker edges. The restoration was
widely hailed among the golfing community
as a worthy tribute to Ross’s memory, with
the Boston Globe saying succinctly: “Ross, it’s
safe to say, would be proud.”
Such a course becomes legendary because
of the battles that take place upon it, and one
such unforgettable showdown was the 1999
US Open duel between Phil Mickelson and
Payne Stewart, who had matched each other
with incredible tee shots on the 17th hole
and were tied going into the 18th. The whole
time, Mickelson had a beeper on him to alert
him to leave if his wife Amy went into labour
with their first child.
SECOND TO NONE | THE SWING
As the crowd held its breath, Mickelson’s
audacious 25-foot putt attempt stopped just
an inch to the right of the hole, leaving the
trophy’s fate in Stewart’s hands – he needed to
make his uphill 15-foot putt to win. The rest
is history: Stewart sank his putt to take the
trophy, pulling down the curtain on one of
golf’s most epic moments. As for Amy? After
delaying birth through medication for one
more day to watch the US Open’s outcome,
she delivered their daughter Amanda safe
and sound.
Even though Pinehurst No.2 will be 110
years old in 2017, it seems clear that this
classic course is here to stay on the golfing
calendar for the years, if not centuries, to
come. Already plans are under way for the
2017 US Amateur Four-Ball Championship,
the 2019 US Amateur Championship and
the 2024 US Open Championship, reflecting
its timeless appeal as a championship-level
course. A quote from Scottish-American pro
golfer Tommy Armour, better known as The
Silver Scot, still rings true to this day:
“The man who doesn’t feel emotionally
stirred when he golfs at Pinehurst beneath
these clear blue skies and with the pine
fragrance in his nostrils is one who should be
ruled out of golf for life.”
THE RISE OF FUNCTIONAL FOODS | HEALTH
he modern era living brings
about changes in the way people
view nutrition and health. The
increased health concerns are
inevitably shaping the choices of
consumers to select health-promoting food
as a more cost-effective means to manage
their wellbeing and save healthcare cost that
may incur from the infliction of diseases. This
age of preventive nutrition whereby food is
perceived to have the ability to possibly delay
or avoid the onset of chronic diseases has
paved the way for the emergence of functional
foods in the food industry.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
defines functional foods as whole foods along
with fortified, enriched, or enhanced foods
that have a potentially beneficial effect on
health when consumed as part of a varied
diet on a regular basis at effective levels.
Functional foods can be generally understood
as foods containing bioactive components
or fortified with nutrients to provide
health benefits (i.e. reducing risk of certain
diseases) beyond basic nutrients, and can be
incorporated into our daily diets.
MODIFIED FOODS
Contains bioactive food compounds
through enrichment or fortification,
such as omega-3 fatty acids in margarine
spreads and eggs.
SYNTHESIZED FOOD
INGREDIENTS
Food ingredients that
are synthesized, such as
indigestible carbohydrates,
which provide prebiotic
benefits like oligosaccharides or
resistant starch.
EXAMPLES OF FUNCTIONAL FOODS
PLANT STANOL / STEROLS
Plant stanols and sterols are plant-derived
lipids which benefits the consumer by
lowering the low-density lipoprotein
(LDL)-cholesterol. Stanols occur naturally
in nuts, seeds and legumes in quantities
that are often too small to produce any
significant benefits. Plant stanols and sterols
can be incorporated into margarines or soft
spreads, milk powders and other foods. The
health claim, as substantiated by the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (US FDA)
is that foods containing at least 0.65 grams
per serving of plant sterols or 1.7 grams per
serving of plant stanols, eaten twice a day
with meals, as part of a diet low in saturated
fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of
heart disease.
CONVENTIONAL FOODS
Contains natural bioactive food compounds.
Most vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, fish
and meats contain bioactive food compounds
that provide benefits beyond basic nutrition.
E.g. antioxidant vitamins in orange juice,
isoflavones in soy-based foods, and prebiotics
and probiotics in yogurt.
HEALTH | THE RISE OF FUNCTIONAL FOODS
CALCIUM
The National Osteoporosis Risk Assessment
is an observational study in the United States
that included a total of 197,848 women and
their findings revealed that Asian heritage
was associated with significantly increased
likelihood of osteoporosis. Having regular
exercise with the inclusion of weightbearing
exercises, coupled with a healthy
diet with sufficient calcium help to maintain
good bone health and reduce the risk of
osteoporosis. Milk intake is the primary
factor which can positively influence calcium
intake. Fresh milk typically contains 330mg
– 370mg of calcium per glass of 250ml,
hence drinking 3 cups of low-fat milk a day
is required for adults to meet the calcium
recommended dietary allowance of 1000mg
per day. Most Asians fall short of this
recommendation due to the low frequency
of milk consumption. High calcium milk
powders are fortified with extra calcium
and contains approximately 45% more
calcium versus conventional milk powders.
This fortification can help to further boost
calcium intake to meet the daily calcium
recommendation.
PHYTOESTROGEN
Soy is a popular food ingredient in Asian
countries, particularly Japan and Korea.
The purported health benefit of soy that
stimulated greatest interest is a reduced
risk in cardiovascular disease. There is an
increase of soy products in the market ever
since the approval of food-labelling health
claim for soy protein in the prevention of
coronary heart disease by the US FDA. 25
grams of soy protein a day, as part of a low
in saturated fat and cholesterol diet may
reduce the risk of heart disease.
PREBIOTICS AND PROBIOTICS
Prebiotics and probiotics are good for your
digestive health. Probiotics are beneficial
bacteria that exerts health benefits in
the intestinal tract. Prebiotics such as
inulin, fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) and
galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) can work
synergistically with probiotics because
they can be represented as the “food”
for probiotics. Probiotics are found in
fermented dairy products such as yogurt
and acidophilus milk. The active cultured
component of yogurt is a probiotic. Some
popular bacterial strains
include Bifidobacterium
and Lactobacillus.
OMEGA 3
Omega-3 fatty acids,
an unsaturated fat
found abundantly in
fatty fish benefits the
heart of healthy people
as well as those who
have cardiovascular
disease. In line with that,
the American Heart
Association recommends
eating fish, particularly
fatty fish, at least two
times a week. Fatty
fish which are good
sources of omega-3
includes salmon, sardine,
mackerel, herring and
trout. Each 3 oz portion
of salmon provides
approximately 1.5g of
omega 3. New methods
of incorporating
Omega-3 into food items
have emerged in the
form of DHA-enriched
eggs and margarine.
BETA-GLUCAN
Beta-glucan is a soluble fiber from whole
oats which is eligible to bear an US FDAapproved
health claim. Taken as part of a diet
low in saturated fat and cholesterol, it may
reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by
lowering LDL cholesterol.
OTHER PHYTOCHEMICALS
Many plant foods contain phytochemicals
and while they currently have not acquired
approved health claims, they are gradually
producing evidence through growing clinical
research that seems to points towards
an association with health benefits. The
list includes:
• Cranberries – protection against urinary
tract infections
• Garlic - blood pressure lowering effect and
prevention of certain types of cancer
• Variety of nuts - used as a replacement
of dietary saturated fat for
cardiovascular benefits
• Red wine - polyphenols (resveratrol) found
in the skin of red grapes seem to explain
the French paradox whereby residents in
France who were drinkers of red wine had
less incidences of heart disease than other
Western populations despite consuming
more saturated fat in their diet
• Green tea – Polyphenols (catechins) found
in tea, particularly green tea may have the
potential to modulate cancer risk
• Tomatoes - Lycopene in tomatoes confers
protection against prostate cancer
• Lutein found in green leafy vegetables such
as spinach and its role in eye health due to
its ability to neutralize free radicals that can
damage the eye.
CONCLUSION
Although there is a lot of hype on the
potential of functional foods in the
prevention of chronic diseases, its
effectiveness has not yet been fully
elucidated. Academic, government and
private research institutes worldwide are
diligently establishing the role of functional
foods in improving health and reducing
healthcare cost. Meanwhile, consumers
need to be circumspect of the interpretation
of marketing messages because they may
not always represent the whole picture.
Currently, official definition and specific
regulations are not available for functional
food products in Malaysia and some other
countries in Southeast Asia. In order to
make informed decisions, it is prudent for
consumers to update their knowledge base
HAUTE CUISINE | FOOD
We take a look at some classic dishes that have
been staples on fine dining menus over the world.
WORDS KARIN CHAN
Though the evolution of the ‘fine
dining’ concept has, over time,
resulted in criteria like décor,
ambience and service holding
equal importance in determining
the success of a fine dining experience, do
not be fooled: the star has been and always
will be the food itself. These days, gourmet
cuisine comes in many shapes, sizes and
techniques, but among the slew of new
creations are some evergreen names that
have proudly held their status as fine dining
cuisine over many years.
MISO BLACK COD
The introduction of this dish at Nobu’s
flagship outlet in Tribeca made an almost
immediate impact, receiving rave reviews
from all quarters and spawning copycat
recipes in top kitchens all over the world.
While the concept was not an original
creation of Nobu Matsuhisa, his technique
brought to light the culinary versatility of
miso and catapulted the once-cheap black
cod into high demand. Over two decades
later, black cod with miso has become
synonymous with the Nobu name and has
made it into a number of ‘most iconic dishes’
lists, both within New York and without.
The dish itself is breathtakingly simple:
Nobu marinates fillets of black cod for three
days in a mixture of mirin, sake, white
miso and sugar, but many recipes note than
refrigerating it overnight should be enough
time for the flavours to soak in. Once done,
the marinade is scraped off and the fillet
grilled on high heat until browned, then
transferred to a baking sheet and roasted
for 10 minutes. Some recipes also choose to
broil the fish in the oven until the fish looks
caramelised and the flesh is cooked through.
CRÈME BRULEE
A serving of crème brulee is a great way to
bring a fancy meal to a sweet ending, but
where did it come from? Despite its French
name, England and Spain also lay claim to
being the birthplace of this custardy creation;
Cambridge’s Trinity College declares that
a ‘burnt cream’ dessert with burnt sugar
was served in 1630, while France notes
that a recipe for crème brulee was found in
the 1691 edition of Le Cuisinier Royal et
Bourgeois, a French cookbook. Meanwhile,
Spain says that ‘crema catalana’ or ‘Crema de
Sant Josep’, named after Saint Joseph, is the
original as it was recorded as appearing in
the 18th century.
Regardless of the origins, this delicious
dessert consists of custard with a brittle
crust of vanilla-scented sugar, which has
been caramelised by careful broiling or
passed over with a blowtorch. The classic
style of serving a crème brulee is in an oval
ceramic ramekin without garnish, but some
restaurants may opt to add strawberries or
other fruits. Most cookbooks recommend
serving the custard cold, with the sugar crust
slightly warm from browning to provide a
nice temperature contrast.
“When I get home late
after working in the Fat
Duck there’s nothing I
like better than to raid
the fridge for prawn
cocktail’’
- Heston Blumenthal
SHRIMP COCKTAIL
The origins of this popular seafood
appetiser are somewhat murky.
Some say that it was accidentally
invented in a Boston Harbour
bar back in 1941, when drunken
patrons added shrimp to a vodkaand-ketchup
mixture as a dare;
others claim that it is instead a
variation on the oyster cocktail,
supposedly the brainchild of a
San Francisco miner in 1860
who liked to dip his oysters
in ketchup. Whatever the
reason, its popularity grew
in the 19th century until it
became synonymous with
special occasions in the US and
Britain, and to this day can still
be found served in canapé form
at exclusive events.
The secret is in the sauce and
the piquant cocktail sauce used
to dip the shrimp in usually consists
of a combination of tomato sauce,
cream, lemon juice, Worcestershire
sauce, Tabasco sauce and occasionally,
horseradish. The classic plating method
is to hook the shrimp over the rim of the
cocktail glass, which should hold a small
amount of sauce, but other variants see the
glasses stuffed with shredded lettuce, then
the cooked shrimp is placed on top and the
sauce is drizzled over the shrimp.
LOBSTER THERMIDOR
‘Fine’ cuisine is often also synonymous
with rare or hard-to-get ingredients, which
is why lobster regularly features in fine
dining menus. Perhaps the most famous
of lobster dishes is the lobster thermidor,
which supposedly originated from a
Parisian restaurant named Chez Marie
in 1894. Legend has it that it was created
– and named – in honour of the launch
of Victorien Sardou’s play, ‘Thermidor’.
Though the play stopped its run after just
three showings, its namesake went on
to become a hallmark of extravagance at
dinner parties.
Generally, lobster thermidors are served
with bechamel sauce that has had a glaze
of wine, sherry, lobster stock and tarragon
stirred into it, which is then slowly added
into a mixture of cream and egg yolks.
When the sauce is thick enough, pieces
of oven-roasted lobster flesh are added,
resulting in a chunky mixture that can
be spooned into empty lobster shells and
browned in a 375-degree oven for a few
minutes. Some recipes include a sprinkling
of cheese to finish or the use of brandy
or cognac.
DUCK CONFIT
‘Confit’, which is a French word that means
‘preserved’, originally began as a humble way
for French families to preserve food by salt
curing it and slow cooking it in fat at a low
temperature. Over the years, the technique
has become a staple in gourmet cookbooks
and is most often used in conjunction with
duck as the tough duck meat becomes very
tender through this cooking method. Confit
can be made from any part of the bird.
While duck confit is known as a classic
French gourmet dish, duck leg confit is
considered a particular specialty of Gascony,
a southwestern region of France.
After roasting it in the oven and letting it
cool down, the meat can be fully submerged
in fat within a can, which will last for a
good number of years. However, the duck
confit that you order in restaurants is usually
prepared by frying or grilling the meat in
its own fat until crisp and brown. Common
accompaniments to the rich meat include
cubed potatoes roasted in the same fat
with added garlic for flavour, or a salad of
red cabbage slow-braised with apples and
red wine.
THE DRINKS | SALUT!
Classic festive cocktails to try this holiday season.
JUNGLE BIRD
Believe it or not, the Jungle Bird
cocktail was created in Kuala
Lumpur back in the 1970s.
The exotic drink is a blend of
rum, Campari, syrup, as well as
pineapple and lime juice. A good
glass of this tiki drink should
have a balance of sweetness
from the pineapple as well as
herbal and bitter notes from the
Campari – a close resemblance
to a Negroni.
PINA COLADA
If you like Pina Colada and
getting caught in the rain...Then
this is the drink to complete the
holiday season. No holiday by
the beach should be had without
the Pina Colada. The drink
itself is a simple concoction
of rum, pineapple juice and
coconut cream. The Puerto
served either blended or shaken
with ice.
Probably one of the most
popular drinks of all time as
Cosmopolitan falls under the
cocktail comprises of a blend
of vodka, lime juice, triple sec,
varies in flavour depending
on the vodka base used but
generally leans towards all three
tastes of sour, sweet and bitter.
SALUT! | THE DRINKS
WORDS THERESA STEPHEN
NEGRONI
The Negroni is an Italian drink
of Campari, sweet vermouth
and gin with a garnish of an
orange peel. The drink was
originally crafted in Florence
in 1919 when Count Camillo
Negroni asked for a shot of gin
in his Americano in place of
soda. Thus, the boozy, bitter and
bold aperitif was born. To kick
this drink up a notch, have yours
DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON
As morbid as the name suggests,
Death In The Afternoon is
indeed a risky and powerful
pairing of absinthe and
concoction, replace absinthe
with ounces of Pernod. The
drink itself originated from
Ernest Hemingway’s novel of
Spanish bullfighting ceremony
and traditions. Hemingway
suggests having three to five
Sir Paul McCartney, the 74-year-old Beatle is transported back more than half a
GAME CHANGER | PAUL MCCARTNEY
Sir Paul McCartney admits he’s
hopeless with dates and for him
the 1960s were mostly spent
in a haze of playing, touring,
writing, recording and living.
But of one thing he is sure: he
never thought that fame and
success with The Beatles would last.
“We were kids,” he says now. “We were
scared. We didn’t think any of it would
last long. Who did in those days? So it is
incredible - and I mean absolutely incredible
- to be talking about The Beatles after half
a century.”
The reason Sir Paul has appeared in
front of the cameras once more to reflect
about the past is a new documentary film
The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The
Touring Years. It is made by Hollywood
director Ron Howard, 62, an avid Beatles fan
better known as an actor in the TV series
Happy Days and for winning an Oscar as
director of A Beautiful Mind.
Those touring years were remarkably
short, from 1962 to 1966. The last show
on their final tour was August 29, 1966,
in Candlestick Park, San Francisco. So
Howard has trawled through old footage and
interviews from the time to deliver what is
an intriguing historical document.
He marries together old and new
interviews with both McCartney, 74, and
Ringo Starr, 76. There are also interviews
with John Lennon, murdered in New York
aged just 40 in December 1980, and George
Harrison, who died from cancer aged 58 in
November 2001.
Howard has uncovered unseen
interviews and footage that no one bothered
with at the time to show both the intense
excitement and the sheer carelessness of
how those tours were put together in four
frantic years.
Between 1962 and 1966 The Beatles
played 250 shows and wrote 150 original
songs. Their final playing appearance
came in January 1969 on the roof of their
company, Apple, in Savile Row, London.
If the past is indeed another country then
that’s how the old days seem, particularly
FROM LEFT: TICKET FROM THE
BEATLES’1966’S CONCERT
the footage in black and white. The Second
World War had been over for just 17
years when The Beatles enjoyed their first
hit, Love Me Do, in October, 1962, and
some of those scenes - boys with short
haircuts wearing suits and ties, girls looking
remarkably gauche - could almost be from
the 1940s. Sir Paul, who once wrote When
I’m 64, feels as much a victim of swiftly
passing time as any of his generation.
“Everything seemed to work so slowly
in those days,” he told me. “When you think
about The Beatles, we had a guy called Pete
Shotton on washboard when I joined, there
was another guy called Ivan [Vaughan] on
bass, Col [Colin Hanton] on drums and
another fellow on banjo.
“So from that to the eventual lineup
of John, George, Ringo and myself took
about 10 years of trying and working for no
money in Hamburg for eight hours a day. It
seemed to take for ever at the time.”
The band began touring only after
returning to their home city of Liverpool
from three separate sessions in Hamburg.
They became resident at The Cavern, a
former jazz club in Mathew Street, and
would initially play whenever and wherever
they were booked.
The only proviso was that they would
not play for less than £15 a night. “All we
got in the early days was prejudice,” says Sir
Paul. “’Where are you from? Liverpool? You
will never do anything from there. Too far
away from London’.”
Research for the film’s factual background
was based on the excellent 1968 book by
Hunter Davies, called simply The Beatles,
which remains the only ever authorised
biography of the group, among the hundreds
of books published before and since.
Throughout the intense touring years
the band was managed by the late Brian
Epstein, who committed suicide aged 32 on
August 27, 1967, almost a year to the day
after the final touring show. Since albums
were also being produced, new songs by
the score had to be written. Most were
on scrappy bits of paper or on the back
of envelopes.
PAUL MCCARTNEY | GAME CHANGER
There was also an intense songwriting
rivalry between McCartney and Lennon.
The volatile nature of their friendship and
partnership produced such a potent and
unforgettable mixture.
“We were always in competition,” Sir
Paul told Davies in an update of his book. “I
wrote Penny Lane so he wrote Strawberry
Fields. That is how it was. John was all
action. He was the loudest in any crowd. He
was the cock who crowed the loudest. Me
and George used to call him the cockerel in
the studio. For 10 years together he took
my songs apart. He was paranoiac about
my songs. We had great screaming sessions
about them.
“In the beginning he was a sort of
fairground hero. He was the big lad riding
the dodgems and we thought he was great.
We were younger, me and George, and
that mattered.”
HE CONTINUES: “It was teenage hero
worship. My first reaction was very simple
- that he was great, that he was a great bloke
and a great singer. That’s what I used to
say. My real first impression was that it was
amazing how he used to make up words.
“He was singing Come Go With Me To The
Penitentiary and he did not know one of the
words. He was making up every one as he
went along. I thought it was great.
“I idolised John. He was the big guy
in the chip shop. I was the little guy. As
I matured and grew up I started sharing
things with him. I wrote songs as he did and
sometimes they were as good as his. We
grew into equals.
“But it made him feel insecure.
He always was, really… We were
once having a right slagging session and
I remember how he took off his granny
glasses. I can still see him. He put them
down and said, ‘It’s only me, Paul.’ Then he
put them back on again and we continued
slagging. That phrase keeps on coming back
to me all the time, ‘It’s only me.’ No one else
knows the truth about us, such as it is. That’s
the trouble.”
Sir Paul makes the point that in the
wake of an earthquake there can be 100
different versions of what happened from
100 different people. “Until I was about 30 I
thought that the world was an exact place,”
he says. “Now I know that life just splutters
along. John knew that all the time. He was
the great debunker.” Through those touring
years the two of them rolled out the hits.
They included the band’s first No1, Please
Please Me, in January 1963, She Loves You,
I Want To Hold Your Hand, A Hard Day’s
Night, I Feel Fine, Ticket To Ride, Help!,
Day Tripper and Paperback Writer.
Even as they finished the final tour date
The Beatles released Yellow Submarine with
poetic Eleanor Rigby on the flipside. They
also delivered seven albums in that time,
packed with such classics as Eight Days A
Week, Michelle and the all-time favourite
for other recording artists, Yesterday. They
carried on writing and recording after the
touring days were over. The band’s
split was announced in April, 1970.
Sir Paul is always blunt about
what happened all those years
ago. “Like any group, there were
times when we could not
play very well,” he says.
“Everyone has to start somewhere and we
were no different.” For director Howard it
has been a labour of love. “I was a huge fan
of The Beatles at the time and reckon to be
more so now after all these years,” he says.
“We knew they were great but perhaps
didn’t realise how great they were. They’ve
produced classic songs and words of our
generation and many generations to come.
They are unbeatable.”
This year marks what would have been Ferruccio Lamborghini’s centenary,
as well as the Lamborghini Miura’s 50th anniversary. We take a look at the
manufacturer’s meandering course of evolution over the years, and the
decisions that led it to become the company it is today.
WORDS ASWAN YAP PHOTOGRAPHS LAMBORGHINI
T
he story of Ferruccio
Lamborghini starting out
as a humble tractor builder
in a post-World War 2
economy is one that has
been repeated and retold for as long as the
brand has been around. But what matters
more than where the company began is
how the company has grown and changed
over the years, passed from owner to owner
and experiencing different distinctive eras
of development.
THE FIRST DECADE
When Ferruccio Lamborghini started his
company, he had a very different image
in mind from the race-oriented brand
that Ferrari has maintained through the
years. While it’s been said that he was
disappointed with what Ferrari had on
offer, it’s rarely discussed that the machines
he had in mind were designed purely for
the road. He had developed a distaste for
racing from his earlier experiences in the
Mille Miglia rally. It was this stubbornness
that also delayed the launch of his first
car- the 350 GT- as the lead engineer
at the time had designed an engine he
deemed too aggressive for the road. When
the car eventually came, it was every bit
as spectacular as initially shown during
Lamborghini’s first outing at a motor show,
but arguably it isn’t the car that defines this
era of Lamborghini.
Instead, it would be the Miura. For
all the cars that Lamborghini developed
and produced in these nascent years, it is
the Miura that is most remembered and
sought after. While Lamborghini had
quickly become known for producing
front-engine GT-style cars, the Miura was
headed in an entirely different direction,
with a mid-mounted 3.9-litre V12 engine
sitting right behind the sole pair of seats in
the cabin. Mid-engine cars were more the
norm for racing, and that was how the Miura
came to be: developed in secrecy by three
of Lamborghini’s top engineers, despite the
anti-racing sentiment that Ferruccio had
himself. It was a car designed for both road
and track, and eventually Ferruccio accepted
it as a necessary model and a way to boost
Lamborghini’s image as a sports car producer.
It was a decade of prosperity for Ferruccio,
but being a relatively small and new company
he simply did not have the means to hold out
during a recession. He first had to relinquish
his more profitable tractor company as the
financial crisis of 1971 took hold, which
crippled him greatly. Next to go was the
sports car company itself, first selling a 51
percent stake to a friend in 1972, and then
selling the remaining 49% by 1974. The
only model that carried over from his time
running the company was the Countach- a
model that was equal parts desirable and
notoriously unreliable, but still a car that
hung in poster form in kids’ bedrooms across
the world.
AMERICAN POWER
In the decade or so that followed Ferruccio’s
departure from the company, Lamborghini
changed hands numerous times but eventually
caught the interest of the legendary Lee
Iacocca. A man known for turning the failing
Chrysler around and make it the powerhouse
it was during the 1980s and 1990s, he felt that
Lamborghini was a necessary acquisition in
order to enter the top tier sports car market as
no brand under the Chrysler group was able
to meet the requirements. The company was
purchased and massive amounts of money
were poured in without question, expanding
Lamborghini’s operations into powertrain
engineering and other various auxiliary
developments.
And of course, there was a car that
defined Lamborghini during this era of
prosperity: the Diablo. With the Countach
being in production for sixteen years, it was
about time for a successor- something that
functioned as a strong statement to both rival
brands and consumers alike. It was the fastest
car of its time, powered by either a 5.7-litre
V12 or a 6.0-litre V12 pushing out between
485 hp and 595 hp, capable of hitting a
claimed top speed of 320 km/h, and packaged
with either rear wheel drive or all-wheel
drive. Arguably it was also the last of its kind,
because the models to come after the Diablo
were no longer as outright raw or edgy as
sports cars had grown to become.
But much like most of Lamborghini’s
successes up to this point, it was to be brief.
The initial reception of the Diablo was
encouraging, with Chrysler soon profiting
off of sales and recovering the initial
development cost of the model. When the
market slowed down and sales began to taper
off, it soon became clear to Chrysler that the
Italian manufacturer couldn’t sustain itself
with such low production volumes, and
they chose to sell it off to a group of South-
East Asian businessmen who continued to
produce Diablos in various iterations until
the late 1990s.
TEUTONIC EFFICIENCY
Coming to the turn of the millennium and
yet another financial crisis, Lamborghini once
again found itself up for sale. At the time,
Volkswagen AG was out on a purchasing
spree as they had plenty of cash on hand
and they chose to buy over the declining
Lamborghini, parking it under their Audi
AG subsidiary. By this point in time,
Lamborghini had been vastly transformed
and was focused entirely on mid-engine
supercars rather than the GT cars of beforebut
it’s this focus that also brought simplicity
and clarity in development and operations.
If there’s anything the Germans have
proved that they’re good at, it’s expansion
of product ranges to cover quite nearly
every segment. Granted, in companies like
Volkswagen and Audi the product range can
be expanded quite aggressively into various
niches thanks to the nature of the brands,
but the same thought process can be applied
to Lamborghini as well. Lamborghini’s
financial failures in the past have been
attributed to the fact that the company has a
sole desirable model, a singular breadwinner
in a sense- and that is both restrictive to car
enthusiasts and incredibly dangerous in the
event of market downturn.
The Diablo’s life was briefly continued by
Audi before it was swiftly replaced by the
Murciélago- a beast of a machine that had
technological prowess previously unheard
of in a Lamborghini product. But more
important than this is the introduction of
a Gallardo, a baby Lamborghini, powered
by a smaller engine and aimed at a slightly
different market.
While the Murciélago spawned many
limited edition models and was a huge
hit, it is the Gallardo that is the definitive
Lamborghini model of the Audi-owned era.
It is proof that while a halo car is necessary
for the brand, a more accessible product
is necessary to keep the factories running
and the brand relevant, to which the
development and success of the Gallardo is
a testament.
PRESENT DAY
2007 brought another world financial crisis,
but this time the story plays out a little
differently. Lamborghini still suffered from
the same decline in sales that every recession
brings, but this time they aren’t peddled off
to the next buyer in an effort to cut losses.
Audi stuck with the Italian brand, patiently
biding their time and continuing to develop
a successor for the Murciélago- and when
the market finally emerged from a slump
in 2011, Lamborghini was ready with the
Aventador. Soon after, the Gallardo was
retired and replaced with the Huracán- thus
continuing the lineage of the most successful
Lamborghini product to date.
Today Lamborghini is more successful
than ever, despite having just a pair of
models (and their various limited edition
variants) to offer. In working closely
with Audi during the development and
engineering process, they have also been
able to share various engineering costs and
components, incorporating things like quick
shifting dual clutch transmissions and rearwheel
steering that they have adapted from
various other products.
The automotive landscape has changed a
great deal since its humble beginnings in the
1960s, but Lamborghini has been forced to
change and adapt with each change of hands,
until the financial stability and dependability
of Audi AG provided it with a more
permanent home. What will define this era
for Lamborghini? Perhaps the upcoming
Lamborghini Urus SUV may be the car that
truly brings Lamborghini to the mainstream,
but it’s difficult to say what else the Italianblooded,
German-owned company will
come up with in the next 10 years.
IT’S NOT A FERRARI,
BUT IT’S NOT MEANT TO BE
Lamborghini products are fairly
polarizing amongst car enthusiaststhey
are either praised for their
technological edge, or criticized for
their seemingly cold approach to speed.
The irony is that while enthusiasts
like to draw comparisons between
Lamborghini and Ferrari, the two
companies are entirely different in their
approach to product development.
Lamborghini’s models have always
come out looking a little cold when
they go head to head with the likes of
the 458 Italia or the F12, but at the end
of the day it’s all about effective power
and traction.
All those videos of Ferraris sliding
aggressively around a race track, tyres
smoking and engines screaming- this
is not something that Lamborghini is
interested in pursuing. Yes, they may
have the occasional “-2” model (dash
two denoting rear wheel drive), but
these are few and far between, and not
the overall aim of the product lineup.
Lamborghini’s focus on traction with
clever all-wheel drive systems and
aggressive aerodynamics should be a
clear indication that it’s more about
outright, clinical speed than it is about
fun and flair.
Even the hard-edged styling and a
decidedly functional interior all serve
to remind you that Lamborghini
means business- at least from Audi’s
perspective. While there are no longer
any Grand Tourers in Lamborghini’s
range as Ferruccio had originally
intended, the fact that Lamborghini
has remained fundamentally different
and even directly opposed to Ferrari
is one to cherish, as it provides much
needed contrast in a market with so few
contenders.
