Welcome to the St Austell Brewery

Celtic Beer Festival 2016

The Company has been flying high this year

not only through our new Tribute hot air

balloon but also British Airways’ selection of

Tribute for their long haul flights and Club

Europe passengers. As though that wasn’t

enough to celebrate, Tribute was recently

chosen by Flybe to be on all their flights.

Back in July we invited the Exeter Chiefs and

England International Rugby Union star Jack

Nowell to officially open our latest addition to

the Visitor Centre – a state-of-the-art, multisensory,

interactive ‘Brewing Experience’.

Jack has agreed to be our Ambassador for

Tribute and our Brewery Charitable Trust

which, as in previous years, benefits to the

tune of any profit from today’s event. So

thank you for your support.

On the people front we were delighted to be

accredited with ‘GOLD’ status by Investors in

People. I know that bosses are always using

the phrase ‘people are our greatest asset’

but that’s because in our case it is true! It is

why the award means so much to our whole

team which would appear to be growing in

number year on year.

The latest recruits joined us on 1st July

through our acquisition of Bath Ales (BA).

Whether it is Bath Ales or British Airways

‘BA’ has done us well this year! Joining forces

with BA means a great deal to us and we are

now the very proud owners of some very

special beers and pubs that complement

our own and are a great strategic fit. We are

now one very big happy family and we will

be working our socks off to build on the

wonderful legacy passed on to us by the three

founding members. I would like to think that

it is safe in our hands.

Rob and Lucy Brewer, our popular managers

at The Rashleigh Arms, Charlestown, were

crowned ‘Licensees of the Year’ by the

British Institute of Innkeeping (BII). With

every licensee in the country qualified to

enter that is no mean achievement and one

that we are very proud of both for them and

the Company. It is good to know that our

pubs have some of the best licensees in the

country!

Talking of pubs we have recently purchased

The Cat & Fiddle at Clyst St Mary in Devon

where we have plans to completely refurbish

Contents

A Guide To The Programme

the bars and add an accommodation block

for 30 rooms. Havener’s, situated on the

Town Quay in Fowey, opened up in July

after a major refurbishment and enjoyed a

particularly busy season. And as we go to

press we are keeping our fingers crossed that

our exciting plans to transform The Chain

Locker at Falmouth will have been passed

by Cornwall Council. We will be retaining

the character and charm of the main bar but

making considerable improvements to the

remainder of the site.

Other recent awards that we are very

pleased to be recipients of are the ‘Large

Manufacturing Company of the Year’ and

the ‘Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year’ at

the recent Made in the South West Awards in

Bristol. We were also made ‘Beer Champion

2016’ by our industry peers and last week

were awarded ‘South West Business of the

Year’ at the Western Morning News awards.

My guess is that our building of the Small

Batch Brewery (SBB) and the innovative new

beer styles that have been brewed there went

a long way to helping us win these treasured

awards. I was fortunate enough to spend a

day in the SBB brewing bottled ‘Italian Job’

and left no doors intact!

And that leads me nicely back to today

and the many special brews that have been

concocted in the SBB by our great team of

brewers both amateur and professional!

The brewing team have been working with

friends in the Company to come up with a

range of special collaborative brews for your

delectation.

As is always the case I am very grateful

to a number of our employees who have

volunteered so generously to give up their

time to set up the Festival and staff the bars

thereby minimising our costs and ensuring

that as much money as possible that we raise

goes to the good causes funded through our

Charitable Trust. Please enjoy yourselves

responsibly at this very special occasion

and I wish you a very Happy Christmas and

prosperous 2017. What’s not to like with the

best beer, best music and best company all

under one roof? Cheers!

James Staughton, Chief Executive

Welcome From James Staughton

Chief Executive, St Austell Brewery & Bath Ales

Welcome to the St Austell Brewery

Celtic Beer Festival 2016

St Austell Brewery’s Celtic Beer Festival this

year comes of age. Celebrating eighteen years,

an individual born on the date of our first

festival may now legally join us to explore and

enjoy the huge variety of beer on offer (any

conceived on that date will have to wait until

next year!). When the festival took its first

tentative steps in 1999, we offered just two

experimental beers from our micro-brewery.

This year we have so many, from our microbrewery,

from our Small Batch Brewery, from

our main brewery and from our colleagues

at Bath Ales that we have outgrown the bar

in the old wine store and have had to extend

our selection into other bars in the festival.

Try visiting the upstairs bar in the Old Rum

Store to try a selection of the special Small

Batch Brews that we have been offering to a

preferential selection of our very best cask ale

customers over the last few months. These

customers are members of our Small Batch

Beer club. The principal of the club is simple;

membership is restricted to just 40 of our

very best customers. Membership entitles

each customer to receive just one cask of a

very special brew each week. Every week they

will receive something different, but every

week they will receive something special and

unique. Our Small Batch Beer pubs are able to

offer their customers a journey through beer,

exploring IPAs, porters, mild ale, cask lager

and even a wheat beer brewed with baobab!

We try and follow themes with our recipes;

‘Inspired by Eden’ enables us to work with our

friends at the Eden Project to introduce an

innovative fifth ingredient into the beer (we

have brewed with baobab, Sorrento lemons,

cherries, coffee, samphire to name just a few).

The ‘Showcase Series’ aims to show off just

one particular ingredient, be it a particular

hop variety, or a malt type, or the brewer

themselves (look out for 1972 – showcasing

the legend that is Mervyn Westaway, who

celebrates 45 years’ service to the Company

in March 2017).

Finally, we have our ‘Festival Favourites’.

This is your opportunity to help us choose

the beers that we will brew next year. From

the wide range of beers available today

from our brewery, tell us your favourites

(you can use Twitter @StAustellBrew) and

those that are most popular will be included

in the Small Batch Beer club next year.

You will have no shortage of beers to choose

from. As always our team of brewers have

been industrious, cooking up a wide and

varied selection of brews. Added to that,

our new colleagues at Bath Ales are no less

creative with a wide and varied selection of

beer created on their very own ‘Beerd’ microbrewery.

If you like hoppy IPA my pick of the

bunch is Big Admiral (Admiral’s Ale malt

combined with Big Job hops, it is straight

out of San Diego!) although others worth a

try are 9 to 5 (single hopped with Amarillo)

or Razor IPA from Beerd. If you are looking

to stay the distance you may prefer a Pale

Ale? Eureka American Pale Ale (single

hopped with US grown Eureka hops) and

Cubic are both amazing beers that we have

great ambitions for 2017. Lager drinkers are

not forgotten. We have a special version of

Korev, extra aged, dry hopped and unfiltered

alongside Phantom (a premium Czech style

pilsner) and Kobalt (a dark Munich style

dunkel). On the subject of dark beers, try Tall

Order, Vanilla and Bourbon Porter or Baron

Samedi Coconut Porter, or if you want a walk

on the wild side Cornish Tiergarten, brewed

by our very own Berliner, Kim Buckenauer in

the style of a Berliner Weisse and aged with

raspberries.

Welcome From Roger Ryman

Head Brewer, St Austell Brewery & Bath Ales

In fact, with so many creative brewers in our

teams at St Austell and Bath, you may be

challenged to try all of the beers just from

our own business. However, the Celtic Beer

Festival has never just been about us. We

are supported every year by the brewing

community of Cornwall and beyond who

donate beer so that we can raise as much

money as possible for the St Austell Brewery

Charitable Trust, supporting the needy

across the South West. We are very grateful

for the support of those brewers who donate

year on year, and welcome new brewers to

our very special club.

On the subject of the Charitable Trust, it was

with great pleasure that I was able to donate

£4,500 to Macmillan Cancer Care following

my epic 1,033 mile cycle ride, carried out

with friends and colleagues from the hop

supply chain in June of this year. The ride was

an amazing experience with great friends, but

most importantly the funds raised will make

a real difference going directly to The Cove,

the new cancer care unit recently opened at

Treliske in Truro. I offer my heart-felt thanks

to all those who supported me. I would also

like to take the opportunity to thank all of

our gold, silver and bronze festival sponsors

who have supported the festival, and whose

help ensure that the Trust can continue to

help other worthy causes such as The Cove

within our local community. I know we

pursue you all each year, but you never fail to

support and our gratitude is genuine.

Our cycle ride from end to end offered the

opportunity to refresh ourselves with beer

from the tip of Scotland to Land’s End. A

particular memory was our visit to Fyne Ale

on the banks of Loch Fyne on Scotland’s West

Coast – amazing beer brewed in a stunning

location never fails to satisfy (but may not

be wise when there are another 50 miles to

cycle!) Jamie Delap from Fyne Ales selected

the Scottish beer on offer at the festival

today and I am delighted to see a couple of

my particular favourites on the list. Tempest

Brewing, brewed in the Scottish borders

is one of the most exciting new breweries

around. I discovered them whilst on holiday

in Northumberland. I now seek out their

beers and have never been disappointed.

Finally special mention must go to Island

Hopping from Swannay Brewery. Brewed

by Rob Hill, a Lancastrian carving out a

living making beer on the rugged coast of

Orkney. Rob has got what it takes; modest

and characterful, an absolute passion and

dedication to his trade with little expectation

to be a wealthy man, his only desire being to

make fabulous beer. He brews on simple kit

with carefully selected raw materials but has

the skill and passion to produce beer that has

won more awards than any that I can think

of. I do recall him being mortified when

his brewery received an ullage, a comment

on the quality of his beer rather than the

geographical remoteness of his brewery! I

commend his beers to you!

I very much hope that you enjoy the festival

and the beers that we have brewed and

selected for you. Please enjoy the beers

responsibly, and please be aware that some

are significantly stronger than you may be

used to in the pub. Finally, please ensure

that you get home safely and respect our

neighbours when you leave. We want to be

able to welcome you back to the cellars again

next year.
