OFFSIDE - When any member of the
attacking team precedes the puck carrier
over the defending team’s blue line.
ICING - When a player shoots the puck
across the red centre line and past the opposing
red goal line. Icing is not called if
the player’s team is killing a penalty or an
onsides attacker or defending goaltender
touches the puck first.
THE PLAYERS - Netminder: The
netminders primary task is simple - keep
the puck out of his own net. Offensively,
he may start his team down the ice with
a pass, but seldom does he leave the net
he guards.
HOCKEY 101
Defence: These players try to stop the incoming play at their own blue line. They try a break-up passes, block shots, cover
opposing boards and clear the puck from in front of their own goal. Offensively, they get the puck to their forwards and follow
the play to the attacking zone, positioning themselves just inside their opponents blue line at the “points”.
Centre: The striker on the ice, the centre leads the attack by carrying the puck on offence. On defence, he tries to disrupt a
play before it gets on his team’s side of the ice.
Wings: The Wings team-up with the Center, on the attack, to set up shots on goal. Defensively, they attempt to break-up plays
by their counterparts and upset the shot attempts.
THE OFFICIALS Referee: Black and White striped shirt with Orange armbands. The referee supervises the game, calls
the penalties, determines goals and handles face-offs at centre ice to start each period.
Linesman: Black and White striped shirt. Two are used. They call offside, offside passing, icing and handle all face-offs not
occurring in centre ice. They do not call penalties but can recommend to the referee that a penalty be called.
Welcome to tonight’s game
For the first time since the very first week
of the season I have been able to speak
about icing a full strength team and the
return of Donatas, Adrian and Pavel.
This itself is very positive and I think
will give a huge lift to everyone around
the club. We have missed these fantastic
players and I know how frustrating it has
been for them having to watch for the
past 5/6 weeks.
Now we are back to full strength we have
to start building momentum back up once
again. We have to find the chemistry we
had pre-season, while easing the players
back up to 100% fitness. Just having them
dress gives all our players a massive lift.
Last weekends results were not what we
had hoped for, we collectively felt dissapointment
at not taking at least a point on
Sunday against a very good MK team.
I thought we played some great stuff and
moved the puck around very efficiently
throughout the game. This is something
we will be working on now we are back to
full strength and putting on some fluent
performances for you to enjoy.
As I predicted earlier on in the season,
this could be the most competitive EPL
campaign in history with a wide range of
teams challenging for the top spots.
It’s a great advert for British hockey and
makes every single game an interesting
encounter.
Once again, thank you for your continued
support!
Enjoy the games!.....
with Tom Relf
Tom Relf is one of our new Dogs this year.
Jane Williams caught up with the 18 year
old d-man on a recent bus trip to find out
more about him.
First interest in hockey...
“My parents went to watch Bracknell
in the BNL, there was good hockey to
watch and they got me into skating from
there. As soon as I could skate I picked up
a stick and I joined a team in Bracknell
from the age of four”.
Early influences...
“I played junior hockey in Bracknell and
also played roller hockey. My parents
were a big influence on me, they got me
into the game. We then made friends in
hockey and other friends began to play
hockey because it was cool thing to do”.
Memorable firsts...
“I remember my first tournament and
my first game. I think I was about five
and it was in the old Cardiff Arena. My
first senior game is a vivid memory, obviously
it wasn’t that long ago! I’ll always
remember my first EPL goal for the Dogs,
against Telford. I’ll take the nickname
you’ve given me, ‘Top Shelf Relf’, I’m
hoping to add to my total - I’ll try for the
top shelf!”
Education and hockey...
“When I was doing my A levels I knew I
wanted to go to university somewhere
and I looked at hockey clubs near universities.
I certainly didn’t want to quit
hockey. Sheffield is a city that has two
universities and of course the Steeldogs
are here. It was an easy choice. I spoke
with Woody about coming and travelled
to take part in some skating sessions.
As soon as I received my results Woody
was one of the first people I texted. It was
quite nerve wracking opening the envelope,
I was more nervous thinking about
the hockey aspect than the academic
side”.
Study vs Steeldogs...
It’s tough having all your weekends travelling
or preparing for games. I do get
free time and I use it wisely. For the last
couple of years I’ve spent my weekends
doing this so it’s not unusual for me. My
university workload isn’t too bad at the
moment, I can see a time later in the year
when I’m working in the bus. I don’t feel
I’m missing out on student life. I get the
best of both worlds, you can’t beat your
hockey family. It’s so much fun spending
your time with the team, you can’t beat
that”.
f
Summer visits to Sheffield...
“I came up during the off season in order
to get to know my new team mates, skate
with the coach and get to know the club.
When you move to a new city it’s a good
idea to come and check it out. Also there
were many people to meet and get to
know and develop chemistry with players
on the ice. I like to get to know people
on a personal level”.
First impressions of the club...
“When I first arrived I was really scared
of Patto, in fact I begged him not to hit me
when we first met – he just laughed! He
has the reputation but you know he’s one
of the nicest guys I’ve met. The Steeldogs
of the last few seasons bare no resemblance
to this team, we are much more
skilful and have some very gifted players”.
Family fans...
“Mum is always watching. She’ll catch
the live streams, travel to the games
close to home. I know she’s commenting
on Facebook and Twitter. It’s great when
family watch and support your career.
Mum has got my sister into hockey too,
she plays in Bracknell. Family give up a
lot of their time and their world to help
us get to where we want to be. Mum is an
amazing woman, I wouldn’t be where I
am without her”.
Sheffield Hallam University life...
“I’m studying Sport and Exercise Science,
at the moment I have four of five modules
on my course such as human anatomy,
how physics and bio mechanics can help
us improve our movement, it’s all human
physiology and what the human body
can do. It’s a three year course. After the
course I’m not sure what career I’ll be
wanting. I hope to still be playing hockey
with the Dogs.
“I’m really loving the city of Sheffield. My
accommodation is excellent, the city centre
is a really nice place. There’s always
something to do and you never get bored.
I feel that Sheffield is home.
It was important to chose a university
near a rink and hockey team, Sheffield
Hallam fitted the bill perfectly. I knew
there was a hockey team too and heard
about the games between the two universities
and playing at the Arena in front of
6000 fans is attractive. I hope to train and
play with SHU at the end of the season”.
Team mates ...
“The best trainers are Palak and Kumeliauskas,
who always give 100% in
everything they do and they are lead
by Morgs. They are so focused, want to
do well in training and are just ahead of
everyone else. The most vocal members
of the group are Donny and Morgan”.
steeldogs 3 bees 4
Saturday night hockey at iceSheffield
saw the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield
Steeldogs take on the Bracknell Bees
looking to put last week behind them
and take revenge for the recent midweek
defeat against the Bees. The Dogs had a
short bench missing Pattison, Shudra
and Charnock.
The puck was dropped and the game
got off to a good start for the Dogs with
Kirk making Mettam make the first save
of the game. Hadfield was then tested at
the other end of the ice and during the
first Bees powerplay Thompson was in
the spot to fire home. Three minutes later
on another powerplay the Bees doubled
their lead as Thompson scored his second
of the game. Trailing 0-2 the Steeldogs
took control of the puck for a few minutes
with Brcko, Smith and Kumeliauskas all
having good chances. With Sheffield attacking
the Bees goal more and more,
momentum was on their side to create
the chance for Smith feeding Mrňa to net
his first of the game. But the Bees had a
response just before the break, Lascenko
keeping the two goal lead. Just before
the buzzer, the Steeldogs thought
they’d scored but the referee judged the
net to be off its moorings before the puck
crossed the line. End of the first 1-3
had Hadfield working hard in the net to
keep Bracknell at bay, Mettam also received
a workout from the Steeldogs forwards.
With under two minutes remaining
Mrňa was there to score the second
for the Dogs, 2-3.
The final period would see lots of play in
the centre of the ice. Time was ticking so
Bosas got things underway with a shot
going wide, then a swift power play for
the Dogs saw some patient play around
the Bees goal, but then Smital was able
to break away and scored a short hander.
Then a trio of pings off the post, first
Smital then Bosas and finally Spearing
all causing the metallic resonance of
puck on post. With 7 minutes left Mrňa
lifted the Steeldogs with his hat-trick
goal. With the game now being a one
goal game, it was time for Woody to call
a timeout in preparation for taking Hadfield
to the bench. 68 seconds left and
Hadfield departed for the extra man but
in those last seconds the Steeldogs were
unable to find the equaliser. End of the
game 3-4
Man of the Match
The second period offered some early
physical play both teams having players
in the box and a mixture of powerplay
and four on four hockey filled the middle
twenty minutes of the game. The Bees
phoenix 5 steeldogs 2
On Sunday night the Bradfield Brewery
Sheffield Steeldogs travelled to Fylde to
take on the Manchester Phoenix.
The opening minutes of the period saw
Manchester take a two nil lead, first
through Wood then Meidl. The Steeldogs
didn’t really have much to show from the
first, although the visitors outshot the
home team.
Into the second period and the Dogs came
out with much more vigour and intensity.
Palak was using his speed to break
into the Phoenix zone, Kirk showed his
determination, Brownley and Thompson
enjoyed a little more ice time and showed
great effort on their shifts. Their persistence
would be rewarded. No further
scoring in the second period.
Into the third and Kirk opened the scor-
ing for the Steeldogs, followed quickly
by his second. The bench celebrated the
tying goal and confidence was rising. The
very next passage of play saw the Phoenix
take the lead again, Kovar on hand
to score the third. The teams continued
exchanging offence until Manchester
scored their fourth of the game. With 2
minutes remaining Wood called the timeout
and brought Hadfield to the bench.
With the extra skater it was hoped that
a tactic that has worked so often would
have the effect of being a goal back but a
break out of the defensive zone and long
shot gave the Red Rose team the fifth goal
and the points.
LIGHTNING
Tonight we welcome the Milton Keynes Lightning, staff to the Pound. This will be game #23 for the
Dogs, our 2nd against the Lightning, with each taking a win. They are currently 16-6-1 on 33 points,
sitting 2nd in the league. In their last 4 games they have lost 1, 3-1 away to the Basingstoke Bison.
Last night they will have hosted the 3rd placed Hull Pirates. Based on both teams current form it
is likely to have been a well fought game with either team taking the points. The Lightning are 3
points ahead of the Pirates but will be really keen to take the points, as they chase league leading,
Telford Tigers.
Swedish forward, Monir Kalgoum played 2 seasons with the Lightning in 2009 and 2011.Instantly
recognisable on the ice because he wore white skates. His brother is Mika Zibanejad who was
drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 2011, 1st round 6th overall. He is currently playing for the New
York Rangers. 19 games into the season he is on 15 pts (5+10). Monir left the Lightning for Swedish
2nd Division team Botkyrka HC and retired at the end of that season.
In December the GB U20`s
will be travelling to Budapest
for the Ice Hockey
World Championships, 3
players from the Lightning
will be making the trip, Edward
Knaggs, Glenn Billing
and Luc Johnson.
Lightning Captain is long
TELFORD
TIGERS
Good evening, it’s game #26 for the Dogs. We welcome the Telford Tigers, staff and fans to the
Pound. The Tigers currently lead the league with 39 pts from 23 games, at the time of writing. They
are 18-2-3. This will be our 3rd meeting, the previous 2 being 1 goal games with the Tigers taking
the points.
Apart from a couple of losses the Tigers are really showing that the off season changes are paying
off. They are 6 pts ahead of 2nd place Milton Keynes Lightning.
Matthew Davies leads the teams in points with 28 (9+19), while Canadian Doug Clarkson is the
leading goal scorer on 16 (16+10).
The U20`s World Championships are coming up this month, 11th to 17th, in Budapest, 19yr old Tigers
D man Corey Goodison will be joining the squad for the trip.
Unfortunately the Tigers are the latest
team to hit the hockey headlines. They
appear to have been spending beyond
their means with significant financial
difficulties being revealed over the last
few weeks. A very unsettling time for
players and fans alike. There is a plan
in development with interested parties
to take the Tigers forward, with the
end of November being crunch time.
Fingers crossed that a resolution has
or can be reached for them as a team
and for their continued participation
in the league.
Whoever you are supporting tonight
I hope you enjoy the game and have a
safe journey home.
EPIHL ROUND UP
SATURDAY ..........
Bison take on MK in a penalty fuelled match.
The opening 10 minutes saw both sides receive
a minor penalty for delay of the game at 07.03,
Basingstoke’s Roehl and Milton Keynes’ Bakrlik.
Less than a minute later saw 4 more penalties
for both sides, 8.22 for charging to Bison
Captain Connolly and slashing to Griffin and
then at 9.20 both sides got slashing penalties
on Balmer and Bakrlik. At 14.32, Bison were the
1st to get on the score board with a goal from
Long assisted by Davies and Roehl. Just 53 seconds
later Roehl and Bakrlik both received 2+2
for slashing and roughing and that brought
the 1st period to a close. The 2nd period saw
the MK’s Baranyk score the equaliser on the
powerplay after Roehl took a seat for high
sticks. At 31.48, Long received an unusual call
of attempted butt-ending and got 2+2+10 for
his trouble but, even with the advantage, MK
were unable to take the lead. The opening minute
of the 3rd period saw Basingstoke take the
lead once again with a goal from Thompson.
More penalties were dished out - MK’ Jamieson
for hooking, Emersic for boarding and Bakrlik
for cross-checking and Basingstoke’s Reynolds
received a 2+10 for checking to the head and
Jarabek for delaying the game. The final goal
of the evening was a short-handed goal in the
final 27 seconds from Bison’s Jarolin – securing
the win for Bison. Bison 3 – 1 MK.
Last week’s shake up in the Guildford Flames
camp seemed to have done the trick as they
defeated the Phantoms at the Spectrum.
Pliskauskas opened the scoring in the 3rd
minute of the game to put Phantoms’ in front
with a powerplay goal. Campbell equalised
at 6.06, Savage followed up to put the Flames
into the lead. Phantoms next goal, at 12.12, was
short-handed goal, after Archer took a seat
for slashing at 10.26, when Darge managed to
take on the extra man unassisted and bury the
puck past Skinns. The 2nd period saw Guildford
extend their lead with a goal from Duggan
but Phantoms replied, just over a minute later,
when Levers found the net. The game winning
goal came from Savage at 43.39 and, at 50.03,
Maslonka secured the Flames win. Flames 5 – 3
Phantoms.
Tigers take the win against the Pirates. The
Tigers took an early lead with a goal from
Clarkson in the 4th minute, Weaver doubled
their lead at 13.17 on the powerplay. The 2nd
period saw Pirates find their way on to the
scoreboard with a goal from Hewitt but Tigers
responded at 25.42- just under a minute later,
with a backhanded goal from Kolena. At the
halfway point in the game, Clarkson struck
again after a pinpoint pass from Satek. They
ended the period with a 5-1 lead, after Plant
scored on the breakaway at 35 minutes. The
Pirates struck back just 24 seconds into the 3rd
period on the powerplay, when Kolena took a
break for 2+2 tripping and roughing. The Tigers
didn’t let things lie and Heywood found
the reply at 42.12. It was a similar scene just
a few minutes later, when Themar closed the
deficit but a hattrick goal from Clarkson kept
the Tigers well out in front when the buzzer
sounded. Hull 3 – 7 Telford.
Swindon Wildcats left the Manchester Phoenix
out in the cold at the Link Centre. The Wildcats
opened up the scoring when Swedish import
Hoog slid the puck around Fone and into the
back of the net. At 11.52, the same trio – Liddiard,
Birbraer and Hood – doubled the Wildcats’
lead when the Swede scored his 2nd of the
night. The 2nd period saw the Phoenix battle
back and they’re efforts paid off when Meidl
passed the puck across the crease to Kovar
who fired it past Lyle. Swindon reclaimed their
2 goal advantage when Malasinski slid the
puck to Hoog who scored his hattrick goal at
36.47. The final period saw Swindon dominate
the play but, at 44.50, at centering puck from
Meidl was turned at the top of the crease by
Kovar to close the deficit to 1 goal. Manchester
pulled Fone in the last minute of the game but
couldn’t breach the Wildcats goal and the clock
ran down. Swindon Wildcats 3 – 2 Manchester
Phoenix.
SUNDAY ..........
Flames made the short journey to face off
against the Bees and went home with 2 points
from the Hive. The Bees outshot the Flames 35
to 26 but were unable to find the equaliser to
take the match to overtime. The 1st period saw
Bracknell dominate play with Mettam only
facing 1 shot and Skinns faced 16 but the Bees’
only managed to convert one last minute goal,
at 19.15, when Barker set up Smital to open up
the scoring. At 26.46, Guildford’s newest import
Santavuori equalised the score and, just over
10 minutes later, Pavlicek found a response
for Bracknell to put them back in the lead. The
3rd period saw a tough battle with Guildford
leading the game and Maslonka tied the score
at 46.57. The Bracknell Bees, who have really
upped their game over the last few weeks,
found a swift reply when Galazzi faced Skinns
one-on-one and found the back of the net unassisted.
Just 59 seconds later McKinney kept
Guildford in the game by equalising the score
once again. At 54.92, Galazzi and Lundin received
penalties from unsportsmanlike conduct
but despite efforts from both teams the
clock ran down and the game headed into a
scoreless overtime. It was Guildford that capitalised
on the penalty shots and won the game.
Bees 3 – 4 Flames.
Telford Tigers defeat Basingstoke Bison. The
first, and only goal for the Bison despite having
14 shots on goal, was scored at 19.31 when
Jarolin and Jarabek linked up to provide Connolly
with the puck and slotted it home. The
2nd period saw Bison creating several chances
but Gospel managed to deflect each and every
one and it was the Tigers who scored the next
goal to close the 2nd period neck-and-neck.
Telford’s Kolena took advantage of the powerplay,
when Balmer took a seat for slashing,
and set the puck flying past Hiadlovsky at
38.22. The Tigers dominated play in the 3rd
period and 2 even handed goals within 12 seconds
secured them the win. The game winning
goal was credited to Hill with assists going to
Weaver and Tait and Telford’s 3rd goal saw
Plant set up Kolena at 48.29. Tigers 3 – 1 Bison.
Hull Pirates suffered their 2nd defeat of the
weekend after they were shut out by the Peterborough
Phantoms. This game saw an
equal encounter as both netminders faced
a total of 30 shots each, but it was Phantoms
that had the edge. This match was an intense
battle which left fans on the edge of their seat
through a goalless 1st and 2nd period. Despite
both teams receiving penalties, like Watt’s 2
minutes for roughing, neither was able to capitalise
on the powerplay opportunities. The 3rd
period saw the 1st goal of the evening for the
Phantoms, at 50.03, when Griffiths and Darge
linked up to provide the puck to Robert Ferrara
who put it behind Marr. At 51.04, Hull’s star
player, Themar, was called for checking to the
head and received 2+10. Phantoms’ Towner
followed Themar into the sin bin at 53.21 but
Pliskauskas managed to find his way past
Marr for a short-handed goal. At 59.44, Captain
Salem was called for game interference
and the match came to an end. Phantoms 2 – 0
Pirates.
Milton Keynes Lightning celebrated a penalty
shoot out win against the Swindon Wildcats.
The Lightning’s opening minutes were costly
as penalties on Bakrlik, for elbowing, and Griffin,
for slashing, meant that Birbraer was able
to take advantage of the 5 on 3. The Lightning
managed to find the equaliser when they were
awarded a delayed penalty, after Whitfield
was called for holding, courtesy of Griffin. Milton
Keynes pulled in to the lead at 23.26 when
Farn feed Hook the puck and scored. A bench
penalty was called against the Wildcats for
abuse of an official and a game interference on
Chamberlain bought the 2nd period to a close.
A goalless 3rd period, which saw a 2+10 given
to Wildcats’ Taylor for a check to the head,
meant the game headed in to a scoreless overtime.
The penalty shoot out saw the first 5 skaters
fail to find the net and it was Assistant Captain
Chamberlain who managed to seal the
deal for the Lightning. Lightning 3 -2 Wildcats.
