STREETLIGHTS
Please report any lights that are out, blinking or on during the day. Part
of your annual Homeowners fee pays for your streetlights, whether they
work or not. If a light is out in your area, please call 713-207-2222 or go
to www.centerpointenergy.com/outage and report it. Each light pole
should have a 6-digit number on it. When reporting the light, you will
need to provide the pole number and closest intersection or address. We
want all our lights to work… a well lit area is a safe area!
SIGNS ON MAILBOXES, LIGHT POLES AND STREET SIGNS
If you place signs in and around the neighborhood for Garage Sales,
Lost Pets, etc., please make sure you remove them in a timely manner.
Remember that postal boxes are the property of the USPS and it is a
crime to attach anything to the cluster mailboxes! Please help to keep
Aberdeen Trails looking beautiful!
TENNIS COURT USE
We have received reports that children have been using the tennis courts
for everything but tennis. Please reiterate to your children that use of the
courts is for tennis play ONLY. No soccer, rollerblading, skateboarding,
bike riding, basketball, etc. allowed. Children caught abusing the courts
may cause their parents to be financial penalized for any damages.
RECREATION VEHICLES AND TRAILERS
We have been receiving numerous reports about all terrain vehicles being
ridden along the drainage ditch areas and power line easements. As a
reminder, this is private property and we have instructed the Constable
Patrol to monitor the areas and write citations for trespassing, as well as
deterring safety hazards. We have also noticed personal utility trailers being
parked behind fences along the drainage ditch and will be collecting license
plate information to determine ownership for violation notices from the
Association, as well as the Constable Patrol issuing citations for trespassing
on private property. Towing of the trailers could be an end result as well.
CONSTABLE PATROL
As a reminder, the Association has a patrol contract through Harris
County Precinct 5 Constable. We share 40 hours of patrol per week at
random time with Aberdeen Trails HOA. Please add the following dispatch
number to your cell phones or post in a visible place at home in case you
need support in a non life-threatening situation. Their non-emergency
dispatch number is 281-463-6666. The Constable Patrol also offers a free
vacation watch service. Log on to their website at www.co.harris.tx.us/
pct5/forms.aspx to obtain a form and learn more about the program.
LOITERING AND VANDALISM
Please help us to keep our recreation areas safe and clean by reporting any
and all loitering after dark directly to the Constable and then to management.
Please also remember to report any suspicious persons walking around
the community or at the parks immediately to the Constable Patrol nonemergency
dispatch number at 281-463-6666. Better safe than sorry!
HOME IMPROVEMENTS
It’s that time of year again where everyone is out and about sprucing
up their yards and performing the “honey-do’s” on their homes. Please
remember that any change or improvement to the exterior of your home
or lot (even in the back yard) must be applied for through the Association
prior to starting. You can find a copy of the home improvement guidelines
and application on the website at www.highsierramanagementonline.com
HAVE YOU REGISTERED ON THE WEBSITE?
We’ve put our association online to provide you with more convenience
and a wealth of online services and opportunities to share ideas and
information; get news and announcements; access an online resource
center for important association documents and forms; utilize the member
directory and much more. Log on to www.highsierramanagement.com
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS
The Board of Directors meet on a monthly basis and residents are
welcome to attend. The Board generally meets at the West Houston
Church of Christ on West Road, however reschedule dates and locations
sometimes occur due to scheduling conflicts. You can find the meeting
dates at www.highsierramanagementonline.com on the website
calendar. Please remember to contact High Sierra Management prior to
or on the scheduled meeting date to ensure there are no cancellations
or location changes. The minutes of the meetings, as well as monthly
financial reports, governing documents, forms, community events and
news, etc. can also be found on the website for homeowner review.
PET POLICY AND ETIQUETTE
We understand your pets are very important to you and want to be a pet
friendly community. However, we have received many complaints that
there are pet owners not following the rules of the community when it
comes to pet etiquette. Please, be aware and make a conscious effort to
the adhere to the following guidelines:
• Only two pets per household - refer to governing documents regarding
height and weight limits.
• Pick up pet waste and discard properly.
• Do not allow pets to roam around the community unrestrained - it’s the
law! This includes cats too!
• Do not allow dogs to bark continuously disturbing neighbors.
EXTERIOR CHANGES OR IMPROVEMENTS TO YOUR HOME
Summer projects are in full swing so we want to take this opportunity to
remind all of you that any change or addition to the exterior of your home
must be applied for an approved by the Association prior to proceeding.
Regular maintenance such as replacing fence pickets, touching up paint,
etc. do not require approval. But projects such as painting the entire
house, replacing the roof, installing decorative items like flagpoles or
birdbaths, etc. do require approval. Please contact management to
inquire about your specific project if you have any questions just to be
on the safe side. You can find the Home Improvement Guidelines and the
application on the website for your convenience and review.
PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY
IN THE UNITED STATES
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which is annually on December
7 th , commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii, during World
War II. Many American service men and women lost their lives or were
injured on December 7, 1941. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is
also referred to as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day or Pearl Harbor Day.
NATIONAL CANDY CANE DAY
National Candy Cane Day is observed across the United States each
year on December 26 th . Candy canes are so ubiquitous during the
holiday season that they are practically considered part of Christmas
itself. However, very few people know when, where or how candy canes
came into existence, though it is a very interesting story. According to
German folklore, the first candy canes were made in the 17 th century
when a choirmaster in Cologne, Germany, needed to find a way to keep
the children quiet during the exceptionally long Christmas Eve Mass. So
he ordered peppermint-flavored candy sticks from a local confectioner,
but with a few twists of his own, steeping them in religious symbolism.
Firstly, he requested the sticks to be on the shape we know them so they
could be a visual representation of sorts of the canes that the shepherds
coming to visit the baby Jesus might have had. Some also say that when
turned upside-down, the candy cane becomes the letter J, which stands
for Jesus. Furthermore, the choirmaster asked for the sticks to be white
(to represent the sinless, pure life Jesus lived) and red (to represent
the blood Jesus lost when he was crucified for the sins of mankind).
Of course, there is no solid evidence for this and modern candy cane
historians or whoever looked into it, have disputed the ideas presented
here. Luckily, however, you can enjoy the candy cane on its special day
with or without this kind of expert knowledge.
How to Celebrate Candy Cane Day
It is quite hard to make your own candy canes if you are not an
experienced confectioner and chances are that attempts will result in
more of a mess than anything else. That’s why we’re not going to give
you a candy cane recipe but rather a recipe for something that can be
easily made using candy canes, that is both pretty and delicious and will
be the perfect addition to your holiday desserts table:
Peppermint Bark
Ingredients:
1 cup crushed red and white candy canes
2 lbs. white chocolate
Peppermint extract
Put the candy canes in a plastic bag and hammer into ¼ inch chunks
or smaller. Melt the chocolate slowly in a double boiler until completely
melted, thick and creamy. Add most of the candy cane chunks (set a few
aside) and peppermint extract to the chocolate. Pour your mixture onto
a cookie sheet layered with parchment or waxed paper, top with the
remaining candy cane chunks and place in the refrigerator for 45 minutes
or until firm. Lastly, remove chocolate from cookie sheet and break into
pieces (like peanut brittle). Enjoy the taste of Christmas!
Leftover holiday candy canes can also be used to decorate a variety of
cakes and cookies, either as larger chunks or crushed finely and used as
sprinkles. They can also be used as classy stirrers, should you decide to
make some rich, mint-infused hot chocolate. Basically, the possibilities
are endless, all you have to do is accept Candy Cane Day into your heart
and the rest will come!
What Do People Do? On the direction of the President, the flag of the
United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans,
the White House and all United States government buildings. The flag
should be flown at half-mast to honor those who died in the attack on
Pearl Harbor. Many associations, especially those linked with Pearl
Harbor survivors or those who died from the attack, participate in special
services to commemorate the event. Memorial services are held at venues
such as the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. Other activities include:
wreath-laying ceremonies; keynote speeches by those associated with
the event; luncheons; media stories on survivors’ recollections of the
Pearl Harbor attack and school activities to educate students about the
attack on Pearl Harbor in relation to World War II history.
Public Life: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is not a federal holiday.
Government offices, schools, businesses and other organizations do not close.
Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some organizations
may hold special events in memory of those killed or injured in Pearl Harbor.
Background: On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, the American Army
and Navy base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the Imperial
Japanese Navy. The attack came as a surprise to the American Army and
Navy and lead to great losses of life and equipment. More than 2,000
American citizens were killed and more than 1,000 were injured. The
Americans also lost a large proportion of their battle ships and nearly 200
aircraft that were stationed in the Pacific region. More than 60 Japanese
servicemen were killed, injured or captured. The Japanese Navy also lost five
midget submarines and 29 aircraft. The Japanese military had hoped that
the attack on Pearl Harbor would prevent the United States of America from
increasing her influence in the Pacific. However, the events in Pearl Harbor
actually led to the escalation of World War II. The day after the attack, the
United States declared war on Japan and so entered World War II. President
Franklin Roosevelt in a speech to Congress stated that the bombing of Pearl
Harbor was “a date which will live in infamy.” Shortly afterwards, Germany
also declared war on the United States. In the months that followed the
attack, the slogan “Remember Pearl Harbor” swept the United States and
radio stations repeatedly played a song of the same name. In 1991, which
marked the 50 th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United
States Congress established the Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal. This
is also known as the Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Medal and can be awarded to
any veteran of the United States military who were present in or around
Pearl Harbor during the attack by the Japanese military. The medal can be
awarded to civilians, who were killed or injured in the attack.
Symbols: Memorials have been built to remember or to symbolize the
day. For example, the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor is a marble
memorial built over the sunken USS Arizona, which was dedicated in
1962. The memorial remembers all military personnel who were killed
in the Pearl Harbor attack. The memorial was designed by architect
Alfred Preis, an Austrian-born resident who lived in Honolulu and was
placed at a detainment camp after the Pearl Harbor attack as part of
the internment policy of Japanese and German Americans at the time.
Another memorial that commemorates Pearl Harbor Day is the USS Utah,
a battleship that was attacked and sunk in Pearl Harbor on December 7,
1941. A memorial to honor the crew of the USS Utah was dedicated on
the northwest shore of Ford Island, near the ship’s wreck, in 1972. The
ship was added to the National Register of Historic Places and declared
a National Historic Landmark in 1989. It is also Utah’s official state ship.
Memorabilia, books and movies about the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941
have also been made available to the public over the years.
COPPER CREEK MEADOWS COMMUNITY
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN JACINTO COUNCIL
What would you call a room filled with super heroes, princesses, witches,
Dr.Seuss characters and minions? If they were dancing, playing games
and having a good time, it was probably the Copper Creek Meadows Me
and My Guy Costume Ball! Copper Creek Community Girl Scouts spent a
fun evening with their special guys (and a mom or two) at our first event
of the year. A cake (and goodie) walk and a variety of crafts and games
in the spirit of Halloween rounded out the evening “What is a Halloween
celebration without “eyeballs” and “brains” to feel or rats to fling? Or
“webs” to weave? One dad appeared in an inflatable dinosaur costume,
another was a “knight” on horseback (as well as the horse). There were
cute witches and scary witches, ghosts and goblins, Greek Goddesses,
ancient Egyptians and bumblebees, archers and members of the (comic
book and movie) Justice League of America. They all looked as if they
were having a blast. We also held a “Scoutacular “event, to introduce
girls and their parents to Girl Scouting, with a puppet craft, “edible
campfires” and songs and games.
A “Mother Daughter Happy Holiday event for Girl Scouts and their moms
is planned for December and our Community will also be participating
in a service project. “World Thinking Day” is returning for another year
of multi-cultural food and fun, as we “think” about Scouting throughout
the world.
We appreciate all those who helped to support our Fall Product sale and
we would like to thank our Fall Product manager, Paula Jones and all the
volunteers and girls who participated. If you missed the Fall Product sale
of nuts and candy don’t forget that, the annual Girl Scout Cookie sale will
be starting in January!
New troops have been getting started and existing troops are busy with
all the many things that Girl Scouts do. Visits to our Council camps for
camping, canoeing, sailing, archery and horseback riding, are always
popular. The Program Place offers activities such as “Juliette’s Tea
Parties” and a museum with Girl Scout uniforms and handbooks and the
Council has several choirs, the Green Starlettes Dance and Drill Team, as
well as a variety of special events and programs.
Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5 (must be in kindergarten) through
18, who are willing to accept the Girl Scout Promise and law. Girls may
join at any age and no previous Scouting experience is required. Don’t
forget that older girls, whose busy schedules may not allow for troop
activities, may join as individually registered Girl Scouts.
Copper Creek Meadows serves girls in the residence areas for the
elementary schools listed below, as well as the corresponding middle
and high schools. Home schooled and private school students are
always welcome. Our elementary schools are: Birkes, Fiest, Hairgrove,
Horne, Kirk, Lee, Lieder, Lowery, Metcalf, Owens, Tipps, Wilson, St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton, Texas Christian School and Christian Life Center.
For more information about Copper Creek Meadows Community,
please contact coppercreekmeadowsgirlscouts@gmail.com. For
information about area recruitment events, please contact Jo Anna
Harris at jharris@sjgs.org. The website for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto
Council is www.gssjc.org.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting
through the local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and life skills which
help our youth Be Prepared. Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam
FUNDRAISERS
STEPS FOR STUDENTS: A 5K RUN/WALK
Are you a runner who enjoys family-friendly races? Are you an alumnus
of a parochial school? Do your children, grandchildren or children of
friends attend a parochial school? Do you like to have fun with 10,000+
plus people? If you answered yes to any of these questions or even if you
didn’t, the 2017 Steps for Students 5k Race/Walk is for you. Steps for
Students is a 5k USA Track and Field Association sanctioned race which
benefits Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
Held every year in February, Steps for Students has grown to include
over 10,000 participants, filling the streets around the Co-Cathedral with
runners, walkers, families, kids and adults. Each Catholic school in the
Archdiocese has its own team which you can join or donate to. Race Day
begins with a sunrise Mass at the Co-Cathedral followed by the race itself.
In 2017, the race will take a new, East-West direction under I69, but it will
still begin and end at the Co-Cathedral. Afterward, you can enjoy the Post
Race Party in the nearby Race Day Village. All donations and registration
fees (minus a $3 fee) go directly to your designated school, where they
can be used to help fund scholarships, improve the campus, add to the
and loving foster homes until they are adopted into carefully screened,
forever homes.
DREAM is currently looking for caring volunteers to provide temporary
foster care for our many rescued Dachshunds-in-need, currently
awaiting adoption. Prior to their adoption, DREAM continues to pay for
all medical care and monthly heart worm prevention. There is no longterm
commitment required. Food, water, shelter and a soft place to rest
is all you need to provide. The “love” just comes naturally.
If you have a little room in your heart and in your home (and your
family pets are up-to-date on their vaccines and monthly heart worm
preventative), then you are who we are looking for! There is no feeling
in the world like the unconditional love you’ll receive from a rescued
Dachshund, plus the friendships you’ll make when you join the DREAM
Team! The more foster homes we have, the more Dachshunds we can
save. Please help save a life and consider fostering today!
Questions? Please send us an email to: Contact-Us@DreamDachs.org
and a volunteer will respond to you right away with all the information
you need! Ready to Foster? Please visit our website at: www.dreamdachs.
org and click on the FOSTER tab to fill out our online Foster Application.
LITERACY ADVANCE OF HOUSTON
IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Your way to transform a life in need… Teach someone to read! Just a few
hours a week can make all the difference for someone in your community!
Literacy Advance is Houston’s largest and oldest 100% volunteersupported
literacy organization - and we need your help! We’re calling
all passionate volunteers to help adults learn to read, write and speak
English. All classes are free because they are taught by caring people just
like you willing to volunteer a few hours a week. We’d love to match you
with a person in need. Ola read her first book at age 49, thanks to a tutor
just like you. Prior teaching experience is welcome but not necessary.
Training and ongoing support is provided and we have locations across
the city. Other volunteer opportunities are available as well, to find out
more please contact Maxine Stefano, Volunteer Manager, at tutor@
literacyadvance.org or at 713-266-8777 ext.16.
START THE NEW YEAR WITH A
NEW BEST FRIEND AND FAMILY MEMBER!
Loving Arms Pet Placement has an assortment of wonderful dogs and
cats hoping for their forever homes. We have all different types of small
to large dogs, mixed breeds and many wonderful cats to choose from.
We are a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats. If you are not ready
to commit to adopting a dog or cat permanently, the animals also
need foster families. Besides providing food, water and a safe place to
sleep, foster families socialize the animals so they are people friendly.
Include the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Get to know
them as individuals so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes,
anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible.
Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted,
please know that your efforts helped to prepare the cat or dog for his/
her forever home. Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at www.
lovingarmspetplacement.com or visit us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and
FM 529 each Saturday from 11 AM until 5 PM.
GIVING THE GIFT OF TIME
THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
The holidays are a great time to start volunteering and give total
strangers an extremely valuable gift: the gift of your time. Research has
linked volunteering to reducing symptoms of depression and elongating
life span. So if you’re looking to give and make some friends, hone
professional skills or combat the winter blues while you’re at it, check
out these ideas and get started.
• Take initiative and plan a toy drive.
• Spread holiday cheer to the elderly, disabled or sick.
• Commit to mentoring a child in your community through Mentoring
USA and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
• Random Acts of Kindness - everyday: Hold the door open for the person
behind you, smile at the barista when you place your order, return a
stranded shopping cart to the supermarket, write an email to someone
you haven’t talked to in a while, compliment someone you don’t know
or thank your parents for being amazing supporters.
Whatever you do, no kind act is too small. And kindness is contagious.
If you do something nice for someone else, chances are they’ll feel
uplifted and be more inclined to help someone else themselves. Even
the smallest acts can contribute to making your community a happier,
kinder place-that’s what we’d argue the so-called holiday spirit is all
about.
GIVE AN HOUR NETWORK
PROVIDES FREE COUNSELING TO TROOPS AND FAMILIES
Since September 11, 2001, 1.8 million troops have been deployed in
Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf, with 17 percent of returning troops
suffering traumatic brain injuries or post-traumatic stress disorder. Given
the military culture’s emphasis on confidence, strength and bravery,
many service members are reluctant to expose personal vulnerabilities
to professional counselors. Give an Hour provides services that are
separate from the military establishment, offering options to service
members who might otherwise fail to seek or receive appropriate care.
Give an Hour is a nonpartisan, nonprofit national network of mental
health professionals providing free counseling services to returning
troops and their families. Give an Hour offers services to veterans of the
wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and their family members. Family members
are loosely defined to include married or unmarried partners, parents,
siblings, aunts/uncles—anyone connected to the veteran who is suffering
a psychological effect related to the veteran’s service.
Banyan Counseling Network has an office located near the North
Cypress Medical Center and is trained to provide individual and family
counseling. Family support groups are also currently forming. People
interested in receiving services through Give an Hour are encouraged
to call 281-855-1982 or log on to www.banyancounseling.com, (click
Military Families link) or www.giveanhour.org to determine availability
or to locate another provider in your area.
