MISSION
In keeping with Milton and Catherine Hershey’s Deed of Trust,
Milton Hershey School nurtures and educates children in social and
financial need to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
ABOUT THIS CALENDAR
The entire Milton Hershey School
community continues to work
collaboratively to implement programs
and initiatives in support of our 2020
Vision strategic plan goals. The five-year
plan is built on three “pillars” or major
goals:
• Cultivate strength of character and
deliver a top-notch education.
• Expand our mission.
• Ignite staff engagement and
exceptional performance.
The 2016-17 Community Calendar’s
monthly section follows our 2020 Vision
framework and features snapshots of
our school community putting the 2020
Vision into action.
2020 Vision
Our 2020 Vision outlines the next five
years of growth and positive change that
Milton Hershey School will pursue as
we fulfill our mission to serve children
from low-income families. President Gurt
introduced the 2020 Vision during the
2014-15 academic year, when the school
recommitted to the mission that Milton
and Catherine Hershey generously
created to improve the lives of thousands
of children. For more than 100 years,
caring individuals have put this mission
into practice to change thousands of lives
for the better and ensure Milton and
Catherine Hershey’s legacy endures.

One
The Power of
Message from the President
“Your success is not a choice—it is an obligation…you have a duty to that
difference maker, the one person over all the others who you consistently
relied upon to be your champion.”
When I told the Class of 2016 that their success was an obligation, I
urged them to reflect on a difference maker in their life—the one person
who always embraced the responsibility of being a source of support and
encouragement.
Just as students are responsible for using the tools they received at MHS
to achieve success, we have the obligation to fulfill the mission of Milton
and Catherine Hershey every day. We all have the opportunity to teach
perseverance, encourage global thinking, and demonstrate healthy habits.
And I have the honor of watching students absorb these lessons and become
difference makers themselves.
Our staff, alumni, and students are true champions. Whether they have
supported a friend during difficult times, helped students navigate
the college admissions process, or provided mentoring and internship
opportunities to fellow Milts, we show the meaning of family by acting with
kindness, integrity, and excellence.
At MHS, we all have the power to change a student’s life. It is our privilege
and responsibility to invest in students’ success and serve as unwavering
pillars of support. Let’s continue to find ways, both big and small, to be
difference makers and champions for our students this year.
Sincerely,
Peter G. Gurt ’85
we will:
SCHOOL PLEDGE
I will keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.
others to do likewise.
In my relations with others, I will live
by the Golden Rule and will speak the
truth at all times.
I pledge myself to honor and to do all
I can for the good of my School, my
country, and my God.
Family Relations
The Family Relations office provides information to help
parents/sponsors partner with Milton Hershey School in
providing children with a successful future.
Joining the Spartan Family Network is a great way to stay
in touch. Parents/sponsors can provide an email address to the
Family Relations office and begin receiving an e-newsletter with
campus news and event information.
Family Weekend events provide a chance to be involved with
MHS, its programs and policies. The events include information
sessions, open houses, and activities to help families spend
quality time together.
Parents can view school events live online by visiting our
website, mhskids.org, on the day of the event. Plus, our social
media channels are always buzzing with campus photos and
updates.
Special needs for parents/sponsors
Please call the Family Relations office at least two
weeks in advance if you have special needs for Family
Weekends or for a student–parent/sponsor conference.
Sending mail to MHS?
Be sure to use the correct street address for your child’s
student home — not the MHS P.O. Box number —
when sending mail to your child. A list of student
home addresses can be found on pages 32-35.
Did your address, phone number, or email change?
Notify your child’s houseparents of any change in your
address, phone number(s), or email address so you will
continue to receive information and progress reports
from MHS.
Did You Know?
Parents/sponsors can register to view student
information such as grades and update their contact
information online through the Infinite Campus
Parent Portal. For more information, visit:
Middle Division
38
Middle Division serves children
during the formative years of
fifth through eighth grade.
Our program focuses on
academic performance, student
engagement, and creating a
positive and supportive culture.
An emphasis is placed on
literacy and mathematics, with
hands-on lessons that reinforce
classroom learning.
Career education offers
opportunities for field trips, job
shadowing and learning from
special guest speakers. Wellness
education includes dental
care, nutrition and exercise,
maintaining a positive body
image, social skills, and standing
up for others.
Students discover their
own unique interests through
the After-School Activity
Program which offers a variety
of experiences from intramural
sports and Taekwondo to board
games, movie making, and
more. Additionally, students
can develop their artistic talents
Senior Division
The Senior Division prepares students in ninth through 12th grade for life beyond MHS by
combining a challenging academic curriculum with experiential learning. Technology-driven
classes, state-of-the-art facilities, college and career counseling, and support for each student’s
personal development ensure their readiness for a bright future.
Co-curricular programming helps students learn valuable skills that support their education
and life experiences. Whether a student is part of a musical ensemble, drama production, Student
Government Association, an athletic program, or an academic club, he or she will be learning while
developing these interests.
Our partnerships with The Hershey Company, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts and the
Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center give our students excellent opportunities for co-op
experiences, internships, job shadowing and part-time employment.
Seniors develop independence and self-reliance in a safe environment through the Transitional
Living program. Students live in dorm-like apartments under the supervision of TL staff, who teach
valuable life lessons about cooking, housework, balancing a checkbook and other life skills.
Graduate Programs for Success
The Graduate Programs for Success (GPS) Division
recognizes that every student’s path to success is different.
Many MHS graduates are entering the workforce, joining
the military, or furthering their education. To support
each unique journey and promote lifelong happiness, we
created the GPS Division to enhance the postgraduate
support MHS offers.
Graduates navigate their next phase by working
with MHS Transition Specialists who provide frequent
communication, helpful resources, in-person visits, and
regular guidance. This level of targeted support helps
graduates learn to advocate for themselves and conquer
challenges with confidence and perseverance.
By expanding preparation for college and career while
students are still enrolled at MHS, refining continuing
education scholarships, and improving graduate support
programs, the GPS Division provides a network of
resources and equips graduates with the tools they need to
build brighter futures.
Alumni Relations & Programs
The Office of Alumni Relations & Programs encourages graduates to stay connected to
their alma mater in many ways including regional outreach, campus events, social media,
newsletters, a magazine, recognition and awards programs, summer housing, the Dearden
Alumni Campus and more.
Alumni have an opportunity to be involved in our admissions process by becoming
Spartan Ambassadors, and Fellowship Weekend connects alumni with current students for
Career Day and the Alumni-Senior Dinner.
Homecoming Weekend offers a chance for alumni to reconnect with houseparents,
teachers and staff while cheering on the Spartans at the annual football game.
Alumni recognition includes awards programs such as the Alumnus of the Year, the
Alumni Achievement Award, and the Spartan Hall of Fame.
The Dearden Alumni Campus instills a deep appreciation for the School’s heritage for
alumni, staff, and students.
